Abstract
Background: The aim of our study was to evaluate the effectiveness of Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM) criteria in assessing malnutrition within the peritoneal dialysis (PD) population.Methods: We conducted a retrospective analysis involving 1057 PD patients across multiple institutions, characterized by an age of 56.1 ± 14.4 years, 464 (43.9%) female, and a median follow-up of 45 (25, 68) months. Malnutrition was diagnosed according to GLIM criteria. The endpoint event was overall mortality. The survival rate and hazard ratio (HR) of death between malnutrition and well-nourished were analyzed in all patients and various subgroups. Receiver operator characteristic curve and integrated discrimination improvement (IDI) were used to distinguish the efficacy of the nutritional tools prediction model.Results: According to the GLIM criteria, the prevalence of malnutrition among the study population was 34.9%. The adjusted HR of overall mortality was 2.91 (2.39 - 3.54, p < 0.001) for malnutrition versus well-nourished. In sensitivity analyses, the HR remained robust except the cardiovascular disease subgroup. The area under the curve of GLIM predicting 5-year mortality was 0.65 (0.62-0.68, p < 0.001). As a complex model for forecast the long-term mortality, the performance of adjusted factors combined with GLIM was poorer than combined malnutrition inflammation score (MIS) (IDI >0, p < 0.001), but fitter than combined geriatric nutritional risk index (GNRI) (IDI <0, p < 0.001).Conclusions: The GLIM criteria provide a viable tool for nutritional assessment in patients with PD, and malnutrition defined according to the GLIM can predict prognosis with an acceptable performance.

Abstract
AIM To compare the accuracy of three different screening tools, namely, the Paediatric Yorkhill Malnutrition Score (PYMS), Screening Tool for the Assessment of Malnutrition in Paediatrics (STAMP), and Screening Tool for Risk on Nutritional Status and Growth (STRONGKIDS), in assessing malnutrition risk in hospitalised children. METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted on 300 children aged 6 months to 15 years at Alexandria University Children's Hospital, Egypt. The sensitivity and specificity of each tool were calculated to detect acute and chronic malnutrition, and an agreement test was conducted between the nutritional screening tools. The patients were classified into different nutritional risk groups, and their classification was compared with anthropometric measures and clinical variables, such as the length of hospital stay (LOS). RESULTS The prevalence of stunting and wasting on admission was found to be 3% and 6.6%, respectively. Children categorised as high-risk on admission had a longer LOS than those at low risk. The agreement test between the STAMP score and STRONGKIDS score on admission showed the most significant agreement, and STRONGKIDS had the best accuracy in detecting acute and chronic malnutrition. CONCLUSION The comparison of the three screening tools revealed that STRONGKIDS exhibited the best accuracy in detecting acute and chronic malnutrition.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Child malnutrition risk factors are globally recognized, but the specific impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the prevalence of child malnutrition, considering socioeconomic burdens and changes in family lifestyles, remains underexplored. This study aims to identify the significance of COVID-19-related factors in relation to the prevalence of child malnutrition in Selangor, Malaysia. METHODS Purposive sampling was employed in this pilot study to select the households with under-5 children and, a structured questionnaire was developed to gather data. Chi-squared tests, logistic regression modelling and World Health Organisation AnthroPlus software-based visualization were used for analyses. RESULTS The present study's findings indicate that demographic and social factors, including 'Citizenship,' 'Type of House,' 'Number of Earning Members,' 'Father's Highest Educational Level,' and 'Number of Children in a Family,' have a statistically significant association with Wasting. Additionally, the mother's 'Highest Educational Level' is found to be linked to underweight prevalence. Within COVID-19 factors, "COVID-19 Impact on Employment/Business" demonstrated significance for both stunting and wasting. Multivariate analysis revealed disparities in childhood malnutrition by gender, age, and factors such as "COVID-19 impact on children's physical activity" and "COVID-19 impact on children's decrease in health over the last two weeks." CONCLUSIONS This study identified COVID-19 factors alongside sociodemographic variables with statistically significant relationships impacting childhood malnutrition in Selangor, Malaysia. The results underscored the substantial influence of the COVID-19 pandemic on child malnutrition prevalence. Decision-makers at family and community levels can benefit by considering these factors in their actions. However, the study's limitation lay in its dataset, urging larger-scale analyses to explore further sub-categories of the examined variables.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Food insecurity and undernutrition are related but distinct concepts contributing to poor HIV and tuberculosis outcomes. Pathways linking them with immunologic profile, which may relate to clinical outcomes, remain understudied. METHODS We analyzed data from a cohort study of 165 antiretroviral therapy (ART)-naïve adults with advanced HIV and newly diagnosed tuberculosis in Botswana from 2009 to 2013. Twenty-nine plasma biomarkers were measured pre-ART and 4 weeks post-ART initiation. We used principal components analysis (PCA) and multivariable linear regression models to assess relationships between immunological profiles and food insecurity (based on the Household Food Insecurity Access Scale), undernutrition (body mass index <18.5 kg/m 2 ), and clinical outcomes. RESULTS PCA identified 5 principal components with eigenvalues >1. After adjustment, food insecurity was associated with PC3 pre-ART (0.19 per increased category of severity, 95% CI: 0.02 to 0.36) and post-ART (0.24, 95% CI: 0.07 to 0.41). PC3 was driven by higher levels of IFN-α, IFN-γ, interleukin (IL)-12p40, vascular endothelial growth factor, IL-1α, and IL-8 and decreased concentrations of IL-3. Undernutrition was associated with PC5 post-ART (0.49, 95% CI: 0.16 to 0.82). PC5 was driven by higher levels of IL-8, MIP-1α, IL-6, and IL-10 and decreased concentrations in IP-10 and IFN-α. Post-ART PC3 (4.3 percentage point increased risk per increased score of 1, 95% CI: 0.3 to 8.9) and post-ART PC5 (4.8, 95% CI: 0.6 to 8.9) were associated with death in adjusted models. DISCUSSION We identified 2 distinct immunologic profiles associated with food insecurity, undernutrition, and clinical outcomes in patients with advanced HIV and tuberculosis. Different pathophysiologic processes may link food insecurity and undernutrition with poor outcomes in this vulnerable patient population. Future studies should assess the impact of improving food access and intake on immune function and clinical outcomes.

Abstract
Undernutrition is a major public health problem in developing countries. Around 40·2 % of children are stunted in Pakistan. This longitudinal study aimed to assess the effectiveness of locally produced ready-to-use supplementary foods in the prevention of stunting by detecting change in of children in intervention v. control arm against the 2006 WHO growth reference. A community-based non-randomised cluster-controlled trial was conducted from January 2018 to December 2020 in the district of Kurram, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. A total of 80 clusters (each cluster comprising ≈ 250-300 households) were defined in the catchment population of twelve health facilities. Children aged 6-18 months were recruited n 1680. The intervention included a daily ration of 50 g - locally produced ready-to-use-supplementary food (Wawa-Mum). The main outcome of this study was a change in length for age z-score (LAZ) v. WHO growth standards. Comparison between the interventions was by t test and ANOVA. Cox proportional hazard models were used to assess the association between stunting occurrence and the utilisation of locally produced supplement. Out of the total 1680, fifty-one out of the total 1680, 51·1 out of the total 1680 and 51·1 % (n 859) were male. Mean age 13·9 months (sd + 859) were male. Mean age 13·9 months (sd + -4·4). At baseline, 36·9 % (n 618) were stunted. In the intervention group, mean LAZ score significantly increased from -1·13(2·2 sd) at baseline to -0·93(1·8 sd) at 6-month follow-up (P value 0·01) compared with the control group. The incidence rate of stunting in the intervention arm was 1·3 v. 3·4 per person year in the control arm. The control group had a significantly increased likelihood of stunting (Hazard Ratio (HR) 1·7, 95 % CI 1·46, 2·05, P value < 0·001) v. the intervention group. Locally produced ready-to-use supplementary food is an effective intervention for reducing stunting in children below 2 years of age. This can be provided as part of a malnutrition prevention package to overcome the alarming rates of stunting in Pakistan.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Poor preoperative nutritional status has been consistently linked to an increase in postoperative complications and worse surgical outcomes. We updated a review first published in 2012. OBJECTIVES To assess the effects of preoperative nutritional therapy compared to usual care in people undergoing gastrointestinal surgery. SEARCH METHODS We searched the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, MEDLINE, Embase, three other databases and two trial registries on 28 March 2023. We searched reference lists of included studies. SELECTION CRITERIA We included randomised controlled trials (RCTs) of people undergoing gastrointestinal surgery and receiving preoperative nutritional therapy, including parenteral nutrition, enteral nutrition or oral nutrition supplements, compared to usual care. We only included nutritional therapy that contained macronutrients (protein, carbohydrate and fat) and micronutrients, and excluded studies that evaluated single nutrients. We included studies regardless of the nutritional status of participants, that is, well-nourished participants, participants at risk of malnutrition, or mixed populations. We excluded studies in people undergoing pancreatic and liver surgery. Our primary outcomes were non-infectious complications, infectious complications and length of hospital stay. Our secondary outcomes were nutritional aspects, quality of life, change in macronutrient intake, biochemical parameters, 30-day perioperative mortality and adverse effects. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS We used standard Cochrane methodology. We assessed risk of bias using the RoB 1 tool and applied the GRADE criteria to assess the certainty of evidence. MAIN RESULTS We included 16 RCTs reporting 19 comparisons (2164 participants). Seven studies were new for this update. Participants' ages ranged from 21 to 79 years, and 62% were men. Three RCTs used parenteral nutrition, two used enteral nutrition, eight used immune-enhancing nutrition and six used standard oral nutrition supplements. All studies included mixed groups of well-nourished and malnourished participants; they used different methods to identify malnutrition and reported this in different ways. Not all the included studies were conducted within an Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) programme, which is now current clinical practice in most hospitals undertaking GI surgery. We were concerned about risk of bias in all the studies and 14 studies were at high risk of bias due to lack of blinding. We are uncertain if parenteral nutrition has any effect on the number of participants who had a non-infectious complication (risk ratio (RR) 0.61, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.36 to 1.02; 3 RCTs, 260 participants; very low-certainty evidence); infectious complication (RR 0.98, 95% CI 0.53 to 1.80; 3 RCTs, 260 participants; very low-certainty evidence) or length of hospital stay (mean difference (MD) 5.49 days, 95% CI 0.02 to 10.96; 2 RCTs, 135 participants; very low-certainty evidence). None of the enteral nutrition studies reported non-infectious complications as an outcome. The evidence is very uncertain about the effect of enteral nutrition on the number of participants with infectious complications after surgery (RR 0.90, 95% CI 0.59 to 1.38; 2 RCTs, 126 participants; very low-certainty evidence) or length of hospital stay (MD 5.10 days, 95% CI -1.03 to 11.23; 2 RCTs, 126 participants; very low-certainty evidence). Immune-enhancing nutrition compared to controls may result in little to no effect on the number of participants experiencing a non-infectious complication (RR 0.79, 95% CI 0.62 to 1.00; 8 RCTs, 1020 participants; low-certainty evidence), infectious complications (RR 0.74, 95% CI 0.53 to 1.04; 7 RCTs, 925 participants; low-certainty evidence) or length of hospital stay (MD -1.22 days, 95% CI -2.80 to 0.35; 6 RCTs, 688 participants; low-certainty evidence). Standard oral nutrition supplements may result in little to no effect on number of participants with a non-infectious complication (RR 0.90, 95% CI 0.67 to 1.20; 5 RCTs, 473 participants; low-certainty evidence) or the length of hospital stay (MD -0.65 days, 95% CI -2.33 to 1.03; 3 RCTs, 299 participants; low-certainty evidence). The evidence is very uncertain about the effect of oral nutrition supplements on the number of participants with an infectious complication (RR 0.88, 95% CI 0.60 to 1.27; 5 RCTs, 473 participants; very low-certainty evidence). Sensitivity analysis based on malnourished and weight-losing participants found oral nutrition supplements may result in a slight reduction in infections (RR 0.58, 95% CI 0.40 to 0.85; 2 RCTs, 184 participants). Studies reported some secondary outcomes, but not consistently. Complications associated with central venous catheters occurred in RCTs involving parenteral nutrition. Adverse events in the enteral nutrition, immune-enhancing nutrition and standard oral nutrition supplements RCTs included nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and abdominal pain. AUTHORS' CONCLUSIONS We were unable to determine if parenteral nutrition, enteral nutrition, immune-enhancing nutrition or standard oral nutrition supplements have any effect on the clinical outcomes due to very low-certainty evidence. There is some evidence that standard oral nutrition supplements may have no effect on complications. Sensitivity analysis showed standard oral nutrition supplements probably reduced infections in weight-losing or malnourished participants. Further high-quality multicentre research considering the ERAS programme is required and further research in low- and middle-income countries is needed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Undernutrition and anemia are significant public health issues among under-5 children, with potential long-term consequences for growth, development, and overall health. Thus, this study aims to conduct a bivariate binary logistic regression model by accounting for the possible dependency of childhood undernutrition and anemia. METHODS The data came from the DHS program's measurement. A total of 3,206 under-five children were involved in this study. A single composite index measure was calculated for stunting, wasting, and underweight using principal component analysis. A bivariate binary logistic regression model is used to assess the association between undernutrition and anemia given the effect of other predictors. RESULTS Among 3,206 under-five children considered in this study, 1482 (46.2%) and 658 (20.5%) children were agonized by anemia and undernutrition, respectively. In bivariate binary logistic regression model; Urban children [AOR = 0.751, 96% CI: 0.573-0.984; AOR = 0.663, 95% CI: 0.456-0.995] and anemic mothers [AOR = 1.160, 95% CI: 1.104-1.218; AOR = 1.663, 95% CI: 1.242-2.225] were significantly associated with both childhood anemia and undernutrition, respectively. Improved water sources [AOR = 0.681, 95% CI: 0.446-0.996], average-sized children [AOR = 0.567, 95% CI: 0.462-0.696], and diarrhea [AOR = 1.134, 95% CI: 1.120-2.792] were significantly associated with childhood anemia. Large-sized children [AOR = 0.882, 95% CI: 0.791-0.853] and those with fever [AOR = 1.152, 95% CI: 1.312-2.981] were significantly associated with under-five children's undernutrition. CONCLUSION The prevalence of both undernutrition and anemia among under-five-year-old children was high in Rwanda. The following determinants are statistically associated with both childhood undernutrition and anemia: place of residence; source of drinking water; maternal anemia; being a twin; birth size of children; diarrhea; fever; and child age. Anemia and nutritional deficiencies must be treated concurrently under one program, with evidence-based policies aimed at vulnerable populations.

Abstract
Malnutrition is a common problem among hemodialysis patients that increases morbidity and mortality and decreases the quality of life. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of malnutrition and associated factors and survey the consumption of energy and several nutrients among hemodialysis patients. A prospective observational study with a cross-sectional design was conducted on 76 patients on hemodialysis therapy at Nguyen Tri Phuong Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, for 2 months (from May to July 2022). Dialysis malnutrition score was used to determine patients' nutritional status. Data about their biochemical parameters were retrieved from records with the newest results. Among the 76 patients, 38 (50.0%) were female. The mean age of the patients was 55.0 ± 13.5 years. Based on the dialysis malnutrition score, 56 (73.7%) patients had mild to moderate malnutrition, while 2 (2.6%) had severe malnutrition. The average energy intake was 21.5 kcal/kg/day, with only 3.9% meeting the recommended intake. The average protein intake was 1.0 g/kg/day, and about 10.5% of participants complied with the recommended protein level. In addition, the majority of patients did not reach the recommendations for sodium (56.6%), potassium (88.2%), phosphate (75.0%), and calcium (82.9%). We found a significant association between patients' occupation (P < .05), dialysis vintage (P < .001), and malnutrition status. Malnutrition is widespread among Vietnamese hemodialysis patients, which necessitates regular assessment and monitoring. We recommend paying more attention to the nutritional status of patients who are unemployed, retired, or stopped working and those with ≥ 5 years of hemodialysis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Globally, undernutrition is the leading cause of mortality among under-five children. Bangladesh and India were in the top ten countries in the world for under-five mortality. The aim of the study was to investigate the nutritional status of Bengali under-five children. METHODS Data on 25938 under-five children were retrieved from the Bangladesh Demographic and Health Survey 2017-18 (BDHS) and the National Family Health Survey of India 2015-16 (NFHS-4). Stunting, wasting, underweight and thinness were considered to understand the nutritional status of under-five children. Binary logistic regression was used to identify associated factors of undernutrition among children. RESULTS Over one-quarter of Bengali under-five children were found to be suffering from the problem of stunting (31.9%) and underweight (28.1%), while other nutritional indicators raised serious concern and revealed inter-country disparities. In the cases of wasting, underweight and thinness, the mean z-scores and frequency differences between Bangladesh and India were significant. The nutritional status of Bengali under-five children appeared to have improved in Bangladesh compared to India. Child undernutrition had significant relations with maternal undernutrition in both countries. Girls in Bangladesh had slightly better nutritional status than boys. In Bangladesh, lack of formal education among mothers was a leading cause of child undernutrition. Stunting and underweight coexist with low household wealth index in both counties. CONCLUSIONS The research revealed that various factors were associated with child undernutrition in Bengalis. It has been proposed that programmes promoting maternal education and nutrition, along with household wealth index be prioritised. The study recommends that the Governments of Bangladesh and India should increase the budget for health of children so as to reach the sustainable development goals.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Malnutrition is not uncommon among the elderly undergoing pancreatoduodenectomy (PD) and is related to increased complications. Previous studies have shown that the Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index (GNRI) predicts outcomes in various populations. Nevertheless, the research exploring the correlation between GNRI and postoperative outcomes in PD is scarce. This study aimed to investigate the preoperative malnutrition, as measured by GNRI, on outcomes in elderly patients undergoing PD. MATERIALS AND METHODS This retrospective analysis enrolled 144 elderly patients underwent PD for periampullary tumors from November 2016 to December 2021. Patients were stratified based on the GNRI value: high/moderate nutrition risk (GNRI ≤ 92, N = 54), low nutrition risk (92 < GNRI ≤ 98, N = 35), and no nutrition risk (GNRI > 98, N = 55). Perioperative outcomes and postoperative surgical complications were compared between these groups. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed on major postoperative complications and prolonged postoperative length of stay (PLOS). RESULTS Patients in the high/moderate risk group were significantly older, with lower BMI (P = 0.012), higher mortality rate (11.1%, P = 0.024), longer PLOS (P < 0.001), and higher incidence of over grade IIIB complications (37.0%, P = 0.001), Univariate and multivariate analyses showed the high/moderate risk GNRI group (OR 3.61, P = 0.032), increased age (OR 1.11, P = 0.014) and operative time over 8 h (OR 3.04, P = 0.027) were significantly associated with increased major postoperative complications. The high/moderate risk GNRI group was also a significant predictor for prolonged PLOS (OR 3.91, P = 0.002). CONCLUSIONS Preoperative GNRI has the potential to be a predictive tool for identifying high-risk elderly patients and monitoring nutritional status preoperatively to improve postoperative surgical outcomes following PD.

Abstract
Tuberculosis (TB) remains a significant global health challenge, despite the World Health Organization (WHO) actively working towards its eradication through various initiatives and programs. Undernutrition, forced displacement, and homelessness worsen TB's burden and challenge control efforts; however, there is still no adequate research that shows the trend of these underlying factors to attain the WHO's ambitious TB targets. So, this study aims to analyze the trend analysis of these underlying factors worldwide from 2015 to 2022 and their impact on the feasibility and implications of reaching the End TB targets by 2035. We utilized international databases, including UNHCR, FAO, and WHO reports, as secondary data sources. Data were extracted chronologically from 2015 to 2022 to illustrate trends in undernutrition, forced displacement, and homelessness on a global level.This trend analysis reveals that undernutrition, forced displacement, and homelessness have worsened over time. Undernutrition rose from 8.4 to 9.8% globally between 2015 and 2021, affecting 22.7 million additional individuals each year. In 2022, undernutrition affected 735 million people globally. Africa (21.9%) and Asia (10.6%) had the highest rates, while Western Europe and North America had lower rates than the global average: 3.4% and 2.5%, respectively.Similarly, the global rate of forced displacement increased from 65.1 million people in 2015 to 108.4 million in 2022, a 21% increase from 2021. This means that an extra 19 million people were displaced in 2021. Globally, homelessness, affecting 1.6 billion people, has worsened over time. Despite being a highly vulnerable group to TB, homeless individuals are often neglected in TB control efforts. Our findings underscore the critical importance of addressing undernutrition, forced displacement, and homelessness in achieving the World Health Organization's ambitious End TB targets by 2035, as highlighted through trend analysis from 2015 to 2022. Implementing policies focusing on nutrition, stable housing, and the challenges faced by displaced populations is imperative for progress toward a TB-free world.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Childhood malnutrition in all forms is a major public health issue worldwide. This review systematically examined the prevalence and determinants and identify the potential interventions and current gap in addressing malnutrition including undernutrition, overnutrition and micronutrient deficiencies (MNDs) in Vietnamese children aged 0-18 years old. METHODS Embase, Scopus, PubMed, and Web of Science were systematically searched through June 2022 to identify relevant articles published within the past 25 years. Study selection and data extraction were performed by one reviewer and checked for accuracy by the other two reviewers in accordance with PRISMA guideline. Risk of publication bias was assessed using American Dietetic Association Quality Criteria Checklist. RESULTS Seventy-two studies that met the inclusion criteria were included. Undernutrition has decreased over time but still 22.4%, 5.2% and 12.2% of children under 5 were stunted, wasted and underweight, respectively. Anaemia, iron, zinc, and vitamin D deficiencies were the more common forms of MNDs, the prevalence varied by age, region, and socioeconomic group. Population-based surveys reported that 11% and 48% of children aged 0-11 years old were iron and vitamin D deficient, respectively. Zinc deficiency affected almost one-quarter of the children and adolescents. Retinol deficiency was of less concern (< 20%). However, more evidence on MNDs prevalence is needed. Overweight and obesity is now on the rise, affecting one-third of school-aged children. The key determinants of undernutrition included living in rural areas, children with low birth weight, and poor socio-economic status, whereas living in urban and affluent areas, having an inactive lifestyle and being a boy were associated with increased risk of overweight and obesity. Nutrition specific intervention studies including supplementation and food fortification consistently showed improvements in anthropometric indices and micronutrient biomarkers. National nutrition-sensitive programmes also provided nutritional benefits for children's growth and eating behaviours, but there is a lack of data on childhood obesity. CONCLUSION This finding highlights the need for effective double duty actions to simultaneously address different forms of childhood malnutrition in Vietnam. However, evidence on the potential intervention strategies, especially on MNDs and overnutrition are still limited to inform policy decision, thus future research is warranted.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Timor-Leste's food insecurity, propelled by political conflicts, a fragile economy and biophysical limitations that characterize mountainous Small Island Developing States (SIDS), is expressed in a high incidence (50%) of stunted children. Hence, the Millennium Development Goals Achievement Fund's Joint Program's (MDG-F JP) in 2009 was a timely intervention to reduce prevalence of underweight among under-fives. Since the impact of the program remains largely unclear, the current study investigates the contributions of the MDG-F JP on improving children's nutritional status in Timor-Leste, in order to inform policymakers on how to make future programs more effective. METHODS Using bivariate analyses and multiple linear regression models we analyzed Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) data from under-fives in 2009-2010 and 2016, combined with spatially explicit data from geographic information systems (GIS). The analyses generated trends and factors associated with undernutrition, which were used in a quasi-experimental setting to compare districts that received the MDG-F JP with similar districts that did not receive MDG-F JP interventions. RESULTS A comprehensive set of factors dependent on seasons, locations, and individuals determine undernutrition in Timor-Leste. A positive impact of the MDG-F JP was found for the average severity of wasting, but not for stunting and underweight. CONCLUSIONS The findings reinforce the pressing need for integrated and cross-sectoral programs, aimed especially at agricultural workers, mothers, and children. The agricultural challenge is to sustainably select, produce and conserve higher-yield and nutrient-rich crops, and educational enhancement should be aligned with local practices and research.

Abstract
Mozambique has one of the highest child undernutrition rates in Sub-Saharan Africa. The aim of this study was to characterize the profile of children from 1 to 14 years old hospitalized for undernutrition and to explore associated risk factors. Clinical, demographic, socioeconomic, and environmental data were collected. Anthropometric measurements and stool samples were collected from a child and their caretaker. The wealth index was determined using Principal Components Analysis. A total of 449 children and their caretakers were enrolled. The children had a median age of 1.0 year [IQR: 1.0-2.0], and 53.9% (242/449) were male. Most were admitted with severe undernutrition (35.7%, 159/449 kwashiorkor and 82.0%, 368/449 with -3SD Z-score indexes). The most common co-morbidities were HIV (30.0%, 120/400), diarrhea (20.0%; 80/400), and anemia (12.5%; 50/400). Among the caretakers, 9.5% (39/409) were underweight, 10.1% (40/397) were overweight, and 14.1% (56/397) were obese. Intestinal parasites were found in 24.8% (90/363) children and in 38.5% (77/200) caretakers. The majority of children (60.7%, 85/140) came from low- to middle-wealth households. Most were severely undernourished, suggesting that they seek medical care too late. The finding of overweight/obese caretakers in combination with undernourished children confirms that Mozambique is facing a double burden of malnutrition.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Child malnutrition, comprising of undernutrition and obesity, is a global concern with severe implications for survival, leading to acute and chronic diseases that adversely affect the productivity of individuals and society. Asia shoulders the greatest burden, with 7 out of 10 undernourished children residing in the region. Despite the decline in global child stunting, particularly in Asia, its prevalence remains significant. In 2017, an estimated 151 million children under five experienced stunting, and an additional 38 million were overweight, with Africa and Asia accounting for 25% and 46% of the global figures, respectively. Therefore, this paper aims to analyze the geospatial and environmental determinants of undernutrition in rural South and Southeast Asia. METHODS To explore the geospatial and environmental determinants of undernutrition (stunting, wasting, and underweight), we use Poisson regression and the data from recent rounds of the Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) from India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nepal, Cambodia, and Timor-Leste. RESULTS This study found a high prevalence of stunting, wasting, and underweight among children aged 0 to 59 months in rural areas of South and Southeast Asia, with considerable variation between countries and clusters/primary sampling units. Results show a positive association between child malnutrition and factors such as maternal illiteracy, unsafe drinking water, and dirty cooking fuel in South and Southeast Asia. Children from impoverished households in India, Pakistan, and Cambodia were disproportionately affected. In addition to socio-economic factors, climatic risks such as temperature increase and rainfall variations also emerged as important determinants of child malnutrition in India, Bangladesh, and Timor-Leste. CONCLUSIONS This paper emphasizes the role of environmental and climatic factors on child nutrition, underscoring their significance regardless of socio-economic conditions. As the impacts of climate change continue to intensify, and agrarian societies bear the brunt, these factors will play a critical role in shaping child nutritional outcomes. Thus, amid growing climate change, nutritional security should be prioritized, considering the spatial domain and targeting climate distress areas along with other socio-economic and demographic aspects.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Research on long-term outcomes of severe childhood malnutrition is scarce. Existing evidence suggests potential associations with cardiometabolic disease and impaired cognition. We aimed to assess outcomes in adolescents who were exposed to severe childhood malnutrition compared with peers not exposed to severe childhood malnutrition. METHODS In Long-term Outcomes after Severe Childhood Malnutrition (LOCSM), we followed up adolescents who had 15 years earlier received treatment for severe childhood malnutrition at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital in Blantyre, Malawi. Adolescents with previous severe childhood malnutrition included in LOCSM had participated in an earlier follow-up study (ChroSAM) at 7 years after treatment for severe childhood malnutrition, where they were compared to siblings and age-matched children in the community without previous severe childhood malnutrition. We measured anthropometry, body composition, strength, glucose tolerance, cognition, behaviour, and mental health during follow-up visits between Sept 9, 2021, and July 22, 2022, comparing outcomes in adolescents exposed to previous severe childhood malnutrition with unexposed siblings and adolescents from the community assessed previously (for ChroSAM) and newly recruited during current follow-up. We used a linear regression model to adjust for age, sex, disability, HIV, and socioeconomic status. This study is registered with the International Standard Randomised Controlled Trial Number Registry (ISRCTN17238083). FINDINGS We followed up 168 previously malnourished adolescents (median age 17·1 years [IQR 16·5 to 18·0]), alongside 123 siblings (18·2 years [15·0 to 20·5]), and 89 community adolescents (17·1 years [16·3 to 18·1]). Since last measured 8 years previously, mean height-for-age Z (HAZ) scores had improved in previously malnourished adolescents (difference 0·33 [95% CI 0·20 to 0·46]) and siblings (0·32 [0·09 to 0·55]), but not in community adolescents (difference -0·01 [-0·24 to 0·23]). Previously malnourished adolescents had sustained lower HAZ scores compared with siblings (adjusted difference -0·32 [-0·58 to -0·05]) and community adolescents (-0·21 [-0·52 to 0·10]). The adjusted difference in hand-grip strength between previously malnourished adolescents and community adolescents was -2·0 kg (-4·2 to 0·3). For child behaviour checklist internalising symptom scores, the adjusted difference for previously malnourished adolescents was 2·8 (0·0 to 5·5) compared with siblings and 2·1 (-0·1 to 4·3) compared with community adolescents. No evidence of differences between previously malnourished adolescents and unexposed groups were found in any of the other variables measured. INTERPRETATION Catch-up growth into adolescence was modest compared with the rapid improvement seen in childhood, but provides optimism for ongoing recovery of height deficits. We found little evidence of heightened non-communicable disease risk in adolescents exposed to severe childhood malnutrition, although long-term health implications need to be monitored. Further investigation of associated home and environmental factors influencing long-term outcomes is needed to tailor preventive and treatment interventions. FUNDING The Wellcome Trust.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Peritoneal dialysis is a commonly used treatment for chronic kidney failure patients. Studies have shown that long-term peritoneal dialysis can lead to various degrees of malnutrition. Therefore, it is of great significance to improve the nutritional conditions of patients with peritoneal dialysis. This retrospective cohort study aimed to evaluate the clinical effects of intensive nutritional nursing combined with a 3-day diet diary intervention on the nutritional condition of peritoneal dialysis patients. METHODS In total, 163 patients were included in this study and, after 6 months of intervention, their nutritional and biochemical indicators, body weight, body mass index (BMI) and intake of dietary ingredients were analysed. RESULTS After the intervention, patients' serum albumin, haemoglobin, prealbumin, body weight, BMI and cholesterol levels were significantly increased (p < 0.05). Also, the daily energy and protein intake were significantly increased, whereas phosphorus intake was decreased (p < 0.05). Of note, the effective rate of intervention was 63.8%, respectively. We also found that factors such as the patient's age, education degree, income level and peritoneal dialysis age were the risk factors associated with malnutrition. Moreover, patients younger than 55 years old, with dialysis age younger than 5 years, unmarried/divorced and high school graduates, had higher chances of effective intervention, whereas the possibility of effective intervention was lower when the per capita monthly household income was less than 4000 Yuan. CONCLUSIONS In conclusion, intensive nutritional nursing combined with a 3-day dietary diary intervention can significantly improve the nutritional condition and optimise the diet structure of peritoneal dialysis patients with malnutrition. These findings provide evidence for healthcare providers to develop personalised interventions to address malnutrition in this population.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The objective of this study was to analyse the global burden of disease attributable to undernutrition and high body mass index (BMI) in Brazil and its 27 states, as well as its association with the socio-demographic index (SDI) from 1990 to 2019. STUDY DESIGN This is an epidemiological time-series study. METHODS This study analysed the undernutrition and high BMI estimated by the Global Burden of Disease study conducted from 1990 to 2019 for Brazil and its states, using the following metrics: absolute number of deaths, standardised mortality rate, and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs). This study also analysed the correlation between the percentage variation of mortality rates and SDI. RESULTS A decrease in the number of deaths (-75 %), mortality rate (-75.1 %), and DALYS (-72 %) attributable to undernutrition was found in Brazil and in all regions. As regarding the high BMI, an increase in the number of deaths was found (139.6 %); however, the mortality rate (-9.7) and DALYs (-6.4 %) declined in all regions, except in the North and Northeast regions, which showed an increase. A strong correlation was identified between undernutrition and high BMI with SDI. CONCLUSION Our study observed a double burden of malnutrition in Brazil, with a reduction in the burden of diseases due to malnutrition in Brazil and variation in the burden due to high BMI according to the socioeconomic status of the region. Public policies are necessary in order to guarantee the human right to a healthy and sustainable diet, together with food and nutrition security and a diminishing of social inequality.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The prevalence of malnutrition is high among the elderly population. Hospital admission is a window of opportunity for its detection. OBJECTIVE To assess the concordance of different nutritional scales in hospitalized patients. METHODS Prospective study in non-institutionalized patients over 65 years of age admitted to an internal medicine department. Five malnutrition screening surveys (MNA, MST, MUST, NRS-2000 and CONUT) and three nutritional risk screening surveys (SCREEN 3, 8 and 14) were compared. As gold standard we use the Global Malnutrition Leadership Initiative for Malnutrition (GLIM) definition of malnutrition. RESULTS Eighty-five patients (37% female, median age 83 years) were included. Forty-eight percent (95% CI 38-59%) of patients were classified as malnourished according to GLIM criteria. The SCREEN 3 scale was the most sensitive (93%; 95% CI 87-98) and MUST the most specific (91%; CI 85-99). The most effective scale for excluding suspected malnutrition was SCREEN 3 (LR- 0.17; 95% CI 0.05-0.53) and the best for confirming it was MST (LR+ 7.08; 95% CI 3.06-16.39). Concordance between the different scales was low or very low with kappa indices between 0.082 and 0.465. CONCLUSIONS A comprehensive approach is needed to detect malnutrition in hospitalized patients. More sensitive scales are more useful in initial screening. Nutritional risk tools could be effective at this stage. In a second step, malnutrition should be confirmed according to established criteria such as GLIM.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Changed body composition with increased fat content and decreased muscle mass is seen in renal transplantation recipients (RTRs). Increased fat mass might mask underlying muscle mass loss; measuring low body mass index and weight reduction alone may not be sensitive enough to diagnose malnutrition in RTRs. We aimed to determine the prevalence of malnutrition in stable RTRs using the Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM) criteria and to assess the use of muscle ultrasonography (US) to compare the performance of various muscle US measurements in the diagnosis of reduced muscle mass. METHODS Ninety-one patients who had renal transplantation >6 months ago were enrolled in the study. GLIM criteria were performed for all patients, but not those at risk of malnutrition. Bioelectrical impedance analysis and muscle US were performed to identify reduced muscle mass. RESULTS The prevalence of malnutrition according to GLIM criteria was 25.3% (n = 23). All muscle US measurements were lower in the malnourished group than the well-nourished group; however, the malnourished group had substantially lower muscle thicknesses in abdominal muscles, specifically the external oblique (EO) and internal oblique (IO) muscles, than the well-nourished group (P = 0.001 and P = 0.007, respectively). There was a significant association between malnutrition and EO (odds ratio [OR] = 0.338, 95% CI = 0.163-0.699; P = 0.003) and IO (OR = 0.620, 95% CI = 0.427-0.900; P = 0.012) regardless of age and sex. CONCLUSION One in four RTRs experience malnutrition. Muscle US could be used effectively for the diagnosis of reduced muscle mass and malnutrition in RTRs according to GLIM criteria.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Currently, 40 million Americans are food insecure. They are forced to skip meals and buy non-nutritious food, leading to health disparities for those of low socioeconomic status. This study aims to investigate relationships between malnutrition deaths and sociodemographic groups. METHODS This cross-sectional study from 2009 to 2018 used aggregate data from the CDC Wide-ranging Online Data for Epidemiologic Research (CDC Wonder). Patients with known race, gender, and Hispanic origin age ≥18 who died from malnutrition (E40-E46) were included. Place of death was grouped into home, inpatient medical facility, hospice facility, nursing facility/long-term care, other (including outpatient, ED, and DOA), and unknown. Crude rates of malnutrition deaths per 100,000 persons for race, gender, and Hispanic origin were calculated using US census estimates. Gross proportions of total deaths were calculated for each place of death. RESULTS Between 2009 and 2018, there were 46,517 malnutrition deaths in the US. Death rates for Black (1.8) and White Americans (2) were twice as high compared to Native Americans (1.1) and Asians or Pacific Islanders (0.7). Death rates among females (2.3) were higher than males (1.5). Death rates among non-Hispanics (2.1) were twice as high compared to Hispanics (0.7). Most people who died of malnutrition died in hospitals (37 %). CONCLUSION Malnutrition deaths occur at greater rates among White, Black, non-Hispanic Americans, and females. Despite reported disparities in food access, Black and White Americans have similar malnutrition mortality rates, raising concerns that malnutrition is under-diagnosed among Black patients. Given the existing nutrition literature, this finding requires further investigation.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Cancer patients are at risk of malnutrition, which is associated with poor oncological outcomes. The aim of this study was to assess the incidence of malnutrition before, during, and after radiotherapy in locally advanced cervical cancer patients. In addition, we evaluated the impact of malnutrition on survival, and whether and when malnourished patients were referred to a dietitian. METHODS This retrospective cohort study included cervical cancer patients who received primary or adjuvant radiotherapy with curative intent between January 2013 and January 2021. Patient and treatment characteristics, including longitudinal data on weight and dietary care, were retrieved from the electronic patient files. Malnutrition was defined by body mass index and weight loss according to the Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM). Overall survival was estimated using the Kaplan-Meier method. Cox proportional hazard regression analysis was used to estimate hazard ratios for key prognostic factors. RESULTS A total of 294 patients were included. Median follow-up was 40 months (range 7-101 months). Malnutrition occurred in 44 patients (15%) at baseline, in 132 (45%) during radiotherapy, and in 63 (21%) during follow-up. Referral to a dietician occurred in 45% of the 138 patients who were malnourished before or during radiotherapy. Malnutrition was significantly associated with worse survival after adjusting for age, performance score, diabetes, histology, International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) stage, and nodal stage. The 3 year overall survival in patients with malnutrition was 77% (95% confidence interval (CI) 70% to 85%) and without malnutrition 89% (95% CI 83% to 95%); p=0.001). Independent significant risk factors for worse overall survival were: malnutrition, age ˃52 years, adenocarcinoma, FIGO stage III/IV, and N1 disease. CONCLUSION Malnutrition was common in cervical cancer patients treated with radiotherapy and was associated with a shorter overall survival. Further studies are needed to evaluate the effectiveness of better monitoring of malnutrition and faster and better dietary intervention on survival and quality of life.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Crohn's patients' nutritional status can be suboptimal given disease pathophysiology; the effect of a malnourished state prior to elective surgery on post-operative outcomes remains to be more clearly elucidated. This study aims to characterize the effect of malnutrition on post-operative outcomes and readmission patterns for Crohn's patients undergoing elective ileocecectomy using a nationally representative cohort. METHODS The colectomy-targeted National Surgical Quality Improvement Program Database (2016-2020) was used to identify patients with Crohn's disease without systemic complications who underwent elective ileocecectomy; emergency surgeries were excluded. Malnourished status was defined as pre-operative hypoalbuminemia <3.5 g/dL, weight loss >10% in 6 months, or body mass index <18.5 kg/m2 prior to surgery. RESULTS Of 1464 patients (56% female) who met inclusion criteria, 1137 (78%) were well-nourished and 327 (22%) were malnourished. Post-operatively, malnourished patients had more organ space surgical site infections (SSI) (9% vs 4% nourished groups, P < .001) and more bleeding events requiring transfusion (9% vs 3% nourished, P < .001). 30-day unplanned readmission was higher in the malnourished group (14% vs 9% nourished, P = .032). Index admission length of stay was significantly longer in the malnourished group (4 days [3-7 days] vs the nourished cohort: 4 days [3-5 days], P < .001). DISCUSSION Poor nutritional status is associated with organ space infections and bleeding as well as longer hospitalizations and more readmissions in Crohn's patients undergoing elective ileocecectomy. A detailed nutritional risk profile and nutritional optimization is important prior to elective surgery.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Preterm infants often have poor short- and long-term growth. Kangaroo mother care supports short-term growth, but longer-term outcomes are unclear. METHODS This study analysed longitudinally collected routine clinical data from a South African cohort of preterm infants (born <37 weeks gestation) attending the outpatient follow-up clinic of a tertiary-level hospital (Tshwane District, South Africa) for 1 year between 2012 and 2019. At 1 year, small-for-gestational age (SGA) and appropriate-for-gestational age (AGA) infants were compared with regard to age-corrected anthropometric z-scores (weight-for-age [WAZ], length-for-age [LAZ], weight-for-length [WLZ] and BMI-for-age [BMIZ]) and rates of underweight (WAZ < -2), stunting (LAZ < -2), wasting (WLZ < -2) and overweight (BMIZ> + 2). Multiple regression analysis was used to investigate associations between maternal/infant characteristics and rates of underweight, stunting, wasting and overweight. RESULTS At 1 year, compared with AGA infants (n = 210), SGA infants (n = 111) had lower WAZ (-1.26 ± 1.32 vs. -0.22 ± 1.24, p < 0.001), LAZ (-1.50 ± 1.11 vs. -0.60 ± 1.06, p < 0.001), WLZ (-0.66 ± 1.31 vs. 0.11 ± 1.24, p < 0.001) and BMIZ (-0.55 ± 1.31 vs. 1.06 ± 1.23, p < 0.001), despite larger WAZ gains from birth (+0.70 ± 1.30 vs. +0.05 ± 1.30, p < 0.001). SGA infants had significantly more stunting (34.2% vs. 9.1%; p < 0.001), underweight (31.2% vs. 7.2%; p < 0.001) and wasting (12.6% vs. 4.3%, p = 0.012), with no difference in overweight (4.5% vs. 7.7%, p = 0.397). In multiple regression analysis, birth weight-for-GA z-score more consistently predicted 1-year malnutrition than SGA. CONCLUSION Preterm-born SGA infants remain more underweight, stunted and wasted than their preterm-born AGA peers at 1 year, despite greater WAZ gains. Interventions for appropriate catch-up growth especially for SGA preterm infants are needed.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Malnutrition is associated with increased mortality in patients with head and neck (H&N) cancer. Because albumin levels are used as a surrogate for nutritional status, the purpose of this study is to assess whether malnutrition is associated with adverse postoperative outcomes in H&N free flap reconstruction. MATERIALS AND METHODS The 2006-2018 National Surgical Quality Improvement Program Database was queried for patients undergoing flap procedures of the H&N based on Current Procedure Terminology codes. Patients were included if they were operated on by an otolaryngologist or when the primary surgical site was H&N. Nutritional status was categorized as malnourished (preoperative albumin level <3.5 g/dL) or normal (preoperative albumin level ≥3.5 g/dL). Major complications included pulmonary complications, cardiac complications, deep vein thrombosis/pulmonary embolism, and sepsis/septic shock. Minor complications included surgical infection, urinary tract infection, bleeding, and dehiscence. Data were analyzed via univariate chi-square and multivariate regression analyses. RESULTS Of the patients, 2532 (83.3%) had normal albumin and 506 (16.7%) had hypoalbuminemia. Patients with hypoalbuminemia were more likely to have smoking history (P = 0.008), pulmonary comorbidity (P < 0.001), renal comorbidity (P = 0.018), disseminated cancer (P < 0.001), steroid use (P < 0.001), recent weight loss (P < 0.001), bleeding disorder (P = 0.023), and preoperative transfusion (P < 0.001). After adjustment for preoperative variance, malnourished patients were more likely to experience death (P < 0.001), return to operating room (P < 0.001), free flap failure (P = 0.008), pulmonary complication (P < 0.001), deep vein thrombosis/pulmonary embolism (P = 0.019), wound disruption (P = 0.042), intraoperative transfusion (P < 0.001), minor complication (P < 0.001), major complication (P < 0.001), and extended length of stay (P < 0.001). Of the patients with normal albumin, 2.1% experienced flap failure compared with 6.3% of patients with hypoalbuminemia. It should be noted that malnourished patients were 3.370 times more likely to experience flap failure (95% confidence interval, 1.383-8.212; P = 0.008) and 3.975 times more likely to experience death (95% confidence interval, 1.700-9.626; P = 0.001) than those with normal albumin. CONCLUSION Malnutrition is associated with death, flap failure, minor complications, and other major complications following H&N free flap surgery, even after controlling for preoperative variance. Optimizing preoperative nutrition status before free flap procedures may ameliorate morbidity and mortality in H&N patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Head and neck cancer (HNC) patients have a high risk of developing malnutrition. This randomized study aimed to compare the effect of weekly cisplatin or cetuximab combined with radiotherapy on weight loss at 3 months after treatment was started. Secondary outcomes were the prevalence of malnutrition using the Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM) criteria, feeding tube dependence and health related quality of life from a nutritional perspective. METHODS Patients from the ARTSCAN III study with advanced HNC were assessed for weight, body composition, enteral tube dependence and selected quality-of-life scores (EORTC QLQ-C30 and QLQ-H&N35) at diagnosis and 6 weeks 3, 6 and 12 months after treatment initiation. RESULTS Of the 80 patients, 38 and 42 were randomized to receive cetuximab and cisplatin treatment, respectively. There was no significant difference in weight loss at 3 months between the two study groups. However, the cetuximab group had significantly less weight loss, fewer enteral feeding tubes and better physical functioning at the end of treatment but more pain-related problems 3 months after treatment initiation. No differences between the groups were found at 6 and 12 months. The prevalence of malnutrition was not significantly different at any time point. CONCLUSION The hypothesized benefit of concomitant treatment with cetuximab over cisplatin regarding the prevalence of malnutrition was not supported by this study.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE We estimated the prevalence and time trends of the double burden of malnutrition (DBM) in Guatemala and explored its occurrence based on socio-demographic factors. STUDY DESIGN This was a secondary data analysis using information from four Demographic and Health Surveys covering the period 1998-2015. METHODS The unit of analysis was the household within which information was gathered from women 18-49 years and their children, 6-59 months. The main outcome was the prevalence of any DBM in the household (co-existence of undernutrition and overnutrition in a woman, her children or both). We estimated the prevalence of any DBM by survey and analysed time trends. Stepwise logistic regression was used to explore the occurrence of DBM and socio-demographic factors. RESULTS We analysed 39,749 households across all surveys. The prevalence of any DBM was 25.3% (95%CI: 22.1-28.7) in 1998-99, 23.8% (22.0-25.8) in 2002, 25.9% (24.3-27.5) in 2008-09 and 24.2% (22.9-25.5) in 2014-15, with no significant change over time (P = 0.782). Characteristics associated with lower odds of any DBM were rural residence, female-headed household, wealth and women's secondary education. Higher odds were seen for households with electricity, women >25y, indigenous and with >2 children. CONCLUSION Our findings revealed that a quarter of Guatemala's households suffer from DBM, which has remained unchanged for 17 years. Interventions should prioritise urban areas, households of lower socio-economic status and those less educated. To increase awareness of policymakers of this pressing public health concern, further research on DBM could be strengthened by prospective study designs, integrating all household members and expanding the types of malnutrition.

Abstract
PURPOSE In 2019, the Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM) suggested a 2-step diagnostic format for malnutrition including screening and diagnosis. Prospective validation and feasibility studies, using the complete set of the five GLIM criteria, are needed. The aims of this study were to determine the prevalence of malnutrition, and investigate how the prevalence varied with mode of screening. Furthermore, we assessed the feasibility of GLIM in geriatric patients. METHODS Consecutive patients from two acute geriatric wards were included. For screening risk of malnutrition, the Mini Nutritional Assessment-Short Form (MNA-SF) or Malnutrition Screening Tool (MST) were used. In accordance with GLIM, a combination of phenotypic and etiologic criteria were required for the diagnosis of malnutrition. Feasibility was determined based on % data completeness, and above 80% completeness was considered feasible. RESULTS One hundred patients (mean age 82 years, 58% women) were included. After screening with MNA-SF malnutrition was confirmed by GLIM in 51%, as compared with 35% after screening with MST (p = 0.039). Corresponding prevalence was 58% with no prior screening. Using hand grip strength as a supportive measure for reduced muscle mass, 69% of the patients were malnourished. Feasibility varied between 70 and 100% for the different GLIM criteria, with calf circumference as a proxy for reduced muscle mass having the lowest feasibility. CONCLUSION In acute geriatric patients, the prevalence of malnutrition according to GLIM varied depending on the screening tool used. In this setting, GLIM appears feasible, besides for the criterion of reduced muscle mass.

Abstract
Information on malnutrition for school-age children and adolescents (5-19 years) in South Asia is fragmented and inconsistent, which limits the prioritization of nutrition policies, programmes and research for this age group. This scoping review aimed to synthesize existing evidence on the burden of malnutrition for children and adolescents aged 5-19 years in South Asia, and on interventions to improve their nutritional status. Cochrane Library, EMBASE, Medline and Google Scholar were systematically searched for articles published between January 2016 and November 2022. Eligible studies reported the prevalence of undernutrition, overweight/obesity, micronutrient deficiencies and unhealthy dietary intakes, and interventions that aimed to address these in South Asia. In total, 296 articles met our inclusion criteria. Evidence revealed widespread, yet heterogeneous, prevalence of undernutrition among South Asian children and adolescents: thinness (1.9%-88.8%), wasting (3%-48%), underweight (9.5%-84.4%) and stunting (3.7%-71.7%). A triple burden of malnutrition was evident: the prevalence of overweight and obesity ranged from 0.2% to 73% and 0% to 38% (with rapidly rising trends), respectively, alongside persistent micronutrient deficiencies. Diets often failed to meet nutritional requirements and high levels of fast-food consumption were reported. Education, fortification, supplementation and school feeding programmes demonstrated beneficial effects on nutritional status. Comprehensive and regular monitoring of all forms of malnutrition among children and adolescents, across all countries in South Asia is required. Further, more large-scale intervention research is needed to ensure policy and programmes effectively target and address malnutrition among children and adolescents in South Asia.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The geographical, demographic, and socioeconomic distributions of malaria and malnutrition largely overlap. It remains unknown whether malnutrition affects the efficacy of WHO-recommended artemisinin-based combination therapies (ACTs). A previous systematic review was inconclusive as data were sparse and heterogeneous, indicating that other methodological approaches, such as individual patient data meta-analysis, should be considered. The objective of this study was to conduct such a meta-analysis to assess the effect of malnutrition (wasting and stunting) on treatment outcomes in children younger than 5 years treated with an ACT for uncomplicated falciparum malaria. METHODS We conducted a meta-analysis of individual patient data from studies identified through a systematic review of literature published between 1980 and 2018 in PubMed, Global Health, and Cochrane Libraries (PROSPERO CRD42017056934) and inspection of the WorldWide Antimalarial Resistance Network (WWARN) repository for ACT efficacy studies, including children younger than 5 years with uncomplicated falciparum malaria. The association of either acute (wasting) or chronic (stunting) malnutrition with day 42 PCR-adjusted risk of recrudescence (ie, return of the same infection) or reinfection after therapy was investigated using Cox regression, and with day 2 parasite positivity using logistic regression. FINDINGS Data were included from all 36 studies targeted, 31 from Africa. Of 11 301 eligible children in 75 study sites, 11·5% were wasted (weight-for-height Z score [WHZ] <-2), and 31·8% were stunted (height-for-age Z score [HAZ] <-2). Decrease in WHZ was associated with increased risk of day 2 positivity (adjusted odds ratio 1·12, 95% CI 1·05-1·18 per unit; p=0·0002), treatment failure (adjusted hazard ratio [AHR] 1·14, 95% CI 1·02-1·26, p=0·016), and reinfection after therapy (AHR 1·09, 1·04-1·13, p=0·0003). Children with milder wasting (WHZ -2 to -1) also had a higher risk of recrudescence (AHR 1·85, 1·29-2·65, p=0·0008 vs WHZ ≥0). Stunting was not associated with reduced ACT efficacy. INTERPRETATION Children younger than 5 years with acute malnutrition and presenting with uncomplicated falciparum malaria were at higher risk of delayed parasite clearance, ACT treatment failure, and reinfections. Stunting was more prevalent, but not associated with changes in ACT efficacy. Acute malnutrition is known to impact medicine absorption and metabolism. Abstract
BACKGROUND Maternal mental health may influence the nutritional status of their children. It was intended to assess the mental health status of the mothers of children admitted to a nutrition rehabilitation center. We specifically explored the relationship between maternal mental health and malnutrition of the child; to observe any change of maternal depressive/anxiety symptoms and weight gain in the child following admission. METHODS In a prospective observational study, malnutrition of children was assessed based on weight for height z scores using the WHO Anthro-Survey-Analyser. We evaluated anxiety using the Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale (GAD-7) and depression by Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9). Demographic and clinical variables were collected. RESULTS The degree of malnutrition of the children at admission and discharge was: mild (3.6% v 31.7%), moderate (37.7% v 26.3%), severe (58.7% v 8.4%), and no malnutrition (0.0% v 33.5%) (p<0.001). At admission, 12% of mothers had anxiety, depression, or both, which decreased to 3.0% at the time of discharge. There was no difference in malnutrition scores among children of mothers with or without anxiety/depression at admission or discharge, except that children of depressed mothers continued to have significantly greater levels of malnutrition at discharge compared with the mothers without depression. Maternal anxiety or depression was not associated with the severity of malnutrition. CONCLUSIONS A proportion of mothers of children with malnutrition had clinical anxiety and depression; and maternal mental health concerns, especially depression may influence the nutrition of children. It is imperative to explore maternal mental health routinely for malnourished children.

Abstract
Undernutrition in children with cancer is associated with complications during cancer therapy. The study objective was to determine the association between specific anthropometric parameters and short-term chemotherapy-related complications and mortality. This was a hospital-based, prospective cohort study of children, age ≤12 years, with a new cancer diagnosis at the Paediatric Oncology Unit, Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Ghana. Socio-demographic information, cancer characteristics and anthropometric measurements were obtained at enrolment. Participants were followed up for twelve weeks from commencement of chemotherapy and selected treatment-related complications such as anaemia and thrombocytopenia requiring transfusions, prolonged neutropenia resulting in treatment delays, febrile neutropenia, mucositis and death were recorded. A total of 133 participants were recruited with a median age of 4.5 years. Eighty-one (60.9%) were diagnosed with solid tumours, 31 (23.3%) had leukaemias and 21 (15.8%) had lymphomas. Of the anthropometric parameters assessed, only arm anthropometry using upper arm muscle area (UAMA) and mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) were associated with complications. Participants with wasting were more likely to develop anaemia and mucositis. However, the incidence of prolonged neutropenia was significantly higher among participants with average UAMA (p = 0.043) and low average UAMA (p = 0.049) compared to those with low UAMA. Risk of neutropenia was also significantly less among those with wasting by MUAC compared to those well-nourished (p = 0.045). Twenty-three participants (17.3%) died with a greater proportion (11/44; 25%) occurring in those who were wasted using MUAC. These findings underscore the need for nutritional surveillance at diagnosis and during chemotherapy, particularly where co-morbid disease is prevalent.

Abstract
BACKGROUND For patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), the incidence of malnutrition is quite high, and malnutrition has severe effects on NPC patients. However, there is currently no recognized gold standard or specific nutritional assessment tool available to assess malnutrition in NPC patients. Our objective was to develop and verify a new nomogram model for NPC patients. METHODS Data were collected from NPC patients. To evaluate risk factors for malnutrition, univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were used. Based on the risk factors, a new nomogram model was developed. The efficacy of the model was evaluated and validated. RESULTS Logistic regression analysis showed that age ≥ 65 years, the number of chemotherapy cycles completed ≥ 1, a high total radiation dose received, low body mass index (BMI), low albumin, and low chloride were the risk factors. The assessment effect of the new model was good by evaluation and validation; it can be used as an assessment tool for malnutrition in NPC patients. CONCLUSIONS Age ≥ 65 years, completing ≥ 1 chemotherapy cycles, a high total radiation dose received, low BMI, low albumin, and low chloride levels are risk factors for malnutrition in NPC patients. The assessment effect of the new model, developed based on these risk factors, is good, and it can be used as an assessment tool for malnutrition in NPC patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess the association between the risk of malnutrition, as estimated by the Patient-Generated Subjective Global Assessment (PG-SGA) numerical scores, and adverse outcomes in oncology patients. DESIGN Systematic review and meta-analysis. SETTINGS A comprehensive search was conducted in PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, CKNI, VIP, Sinomed and Wanfang databases. Studies that examined the association between the risk of malnutrition, as estimated by the PG-SGA numerical scores, and overall survival (OS) or postoperative complications in oncology patients were included. Patients were classified as low risk (PG-SGA ≤ 3), medium risk (PG-SGA 4-8) and high risk of malnutrition (PG-SGA > 8). SUBJECT Nineteen studies reporting on twenty articles (n 9286 patients). RESULTS The prevalence of medium and high risk of malnutrition ranged from 16·0 % to 71·6 %. A meta-analysis showed that cancer patients with medium and high risk of malnutrition had a poorer OS (adjusted hazard ratios (HR) 1·98; 95 % CI 1·77, 2·21) compared with those with a low risk of malnutrition. Stratified analysis revealed that the pooled HR was 1·55 (95 % CI 1·17, 2·06) for medium risk of malnutrition and 2·65 (95 % CI 1·90, 3·70) for high risk of malnutrition. Additionally, the pooled adjusted OR for postoperative complications was 4·65 (95 % CI 1·61, 13·44) for patients at medium and high risk of malnutrition. CONCLUSIONS The presence of medium and high risk of malnutrition, as estimated by the PG-SGA numerical scores, is significantly linked to poorer OS and an increased risk of postoperative complications in oncology patients.

Abstract
Malnutrition seriously affects children's health, survival, and future productivity. According to the literature, increasing the supply of health services should help reduce the spread of malnutrition. This article analyses the sources of changes in the decline of chronic malnutrition during the 2000s, where there was an increase in the supply of health services in Burkina Faso. We used data from demographic and health surveys conducted in 2003 and 2010 in Burkina Faso. Malnutrition was defined according to the recommendations of the World Health Organization, while using standards of growth which are current and uniform for the two periods of study considered. We analyzed the source of temporal variation of chronic malnutrition through the Oaxaca-Blinder multivariate decomposition of the proportion of children suffering from chronic malnutrition. The analyses showed that the relative extent of chronic malnutrition in children decreased significantly, from 43.4% (CI 95%: 42.3-44.4) in 2003 to 34.7% (CI 95%: 33.6-35.9) in 2010. A quarter of this variation is due to a change in characteristics (composition effect), and the remaining 74.74% is due to a difference in coefficients (performance or behavior effect). Improved access to health services played a crucial role in reducing the scale of chronic malnutrition between 2003 and 2010. Other factors, such as educating mothers and urbanization, also contributed significantly. This study shows that improving access to health services is crucial for reducing chronic malnutrition. So, programs tackling child malnutrition must first and foremost ensure that children have access to health services.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION There is currently no gold standard or specific nutritional assessment tool to assess malnutrition in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). Our study aims to develop a new nutritional assessment tool for NPC patients. METHODS AND ANALYSIS NPC patients will be required to complete a risk factor questionnaire after obtaining their informed consent. The risk factor questionnaire will be used to collect potential risk factors for malnutrition. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses will be used to identify risk factors for malnutrition. A new nutritional assessment tool will be developed based on risk factors. The new tool's performance will be assessed by calibration and discrimination. The bootstrapping will be used for internal validation of the new tool. In addition, external validation will be performed by recruiting NPC patients from another hospital. DISCUSSION If the new tool is validated to be effective, it will potentially save medical staff time in assessing malnutrition and improve their work efficiency. Additionally, it may reduce the incidence of malnutrition and its adverse consequences. STRENGTHS AND LIMITATIONS OF THIS STUDY The study will comprehensively analyze demographic data, disease status, physical examination, and blood sampling to identify risk factors for malnutrition. Furthermore, the new tool will be systematically evaluated, and validated to determine their effectiveness. However, the restricted geographical range may limit the generalizability of the results to other ethnicities. Additionally, the study does not analyze subjective indicators such as psychology. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION The ethical approval was granted by the Ethical Committee of the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangxi Medical University (NO. 2022-KT-GUI WEI-005) and the Second Affiliated Hospital of Guangxi Medical University (NO. 2022-KY-0752). Abstract
There is voluminous literature on Food Security in Africa. This study explicitly considers the spatio-temporal factors in addition to the usual FAO-based metrics in modeling and understanding the dynamics of food security and nutrition across the African continent. To better understand the complex trajectory and burden of food insecurity and nutrition in Africa, it is crucial to consider space-time factors when modeling and interpreting food security. The spatio-temporal anova model was found to be superior(employing statistical criteria) to the other three models from the spatio-temporal interaction domain models. The results of the study suggest that dietary supply adequacy, food stability, and consumption status are positively associated with severe food security, while average food supply and environmental factors have negative effects on Food Security and Nutrition. The findings also indicate that severe food insecurity and malnutrition are spatially and temporally correlated across the African continent. Spatio-temporal modeling and spatial mapping are essential components of a comprehensive practice to reduce the burden of severe food insecurity. likewise, any planning and intervention to improve the average food supply and environment to promote sustainable development should be regional instead of one size fit all.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A new coronavirus was first identified in Wuhan, China in December 2019. Since the times of the 1918 influenza pandemic, malnutrition has been known as a risk factor for severity and mortality from viral pneumonia. Similarly, the recently identified SARS-Cov2 infection (COVID-19) and related pneumonia may be closely linked to malnutrition. Therefore, this study will contribute to new knowledge and awareness of the recording and evaluation of each COVID-19 patient's nutritional status by assessing the effect of malnutrition on ICU admission and death of COVID-19 patients in developing countries. METHOD We conducted a prospective cohort study in adult COVID-19 patients admitted to selected COVID-19 Isolation and Treatment Centers, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Baseline data of the patients were collected using interviewer-administered structured questionnaire and data on the adverse outcomes of follow up were extracted from follow up chart. The main clinical outcomes (ICU admission and death) were captured every week of follow up. We ran a multivariate Cox's regression analysis to determine the relationship between malnutrition at admission and its effect on ICU admission and death. RESULTS A total of 581 COVID-19 patients were enrolled. From the total of recruited patients, 346 (59.6%) were males and 235 (40.4%) were females. The mean age of the respondents was 55 years (16.45) years. The Cox proportional hazard model controlled for sex, age group, number of co-morbidities, and number of medications found that malnutrition at admission was associated with ICU admission and death. When compared to well-nourished patients, the rate of ICU admission was significantly associated and found to be higher among underweight [(adjusted hazard ratio (AHR) = 10.02, 95% CI: (8.64-12.10)] and overweight [(AHR = 7.7, 95% CI: (6.41-9.62)] patients. The rate of survival probability was significantly associated and was found to be better among well-nourished patients (AHR = 0.06, 95% CI : (0.01-0.44) when compared with malnourished COVID-19 patients. CONCLUSION Malnutrition at the time of admission was shown to increase the risk of ICU admission and mortality among COVID-19 patients. Therefore, it is vital to evaluate patients' nutritional condition early in their admission and provide timely intervention to minimize the effects on patients and the healthcare system.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Multidimensional factors such as socioeconomic or environmental factors influence malnutrition. Several studies have strongly linked malnutrition to poverty. Some international studies point to the worse nutritional status of urban slum children than rural children. Limited data is available regarding the nutritional status of slum children in Karachi. This study aimed to determine characteristics of malnourished children in an urban squatter settlement in Karachi, Pakistan. METHODS A case- control study was carried out at the primary healthcare center of a squatter settlement in Karachi, Pakistan. All children under five years of age visiting the primary healthcare center were recruited consecutively. Cases were defined as children with z scores < -2 SD of WHO reference measurements of WFA, HFA, WFH and OFC. The controls were similar in terms of age group but had z scores between - 2SD and + 2SD. A self- structured risk factor questionnaire that included information about sociodemographic, economic and environmental factors as well as child- related characteristics was researcher administered via face-to-face interviews with the mothers of children. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were conducted. Crude and adjusted odds ratios were calculated with 95% confidence interval. RESULTS A total of 280 participants including 140 cases and 140 controls participated in the study. A larger proportion of the sample originated from individuals with low household income. After adjusting for the confounders, childhood malnutrition was significantly associated with a low education level of father (aOR 4.86, 95% CI 2.23-10.60), a monthly income less than 25,000 PKR (89 USD) per month (aOR 7.13, 95% CI 1.67-30.54), pour pit latrine type of toilet (aOR 4.41, 95% CI 2.67-7.3), less than six months of exclusive breast feeding (aOR 3.578, CI 1.58-8.08), inappropriate weaning age (aOR 3.71, 95% CI 1.53-9). CONCLUSION Malnutrition in children under five years of age in the community is associated with low family income, low paternal education, poor toilet facilities, lack of exclusive breastfeeding and inappropriate weaning age. The implementation of poverty reduction programs, sanitation provision at affordable rates, community-based breast feeding and weaning education intervention are urgently required to efficiently improve children's nutritional status.

Abstract
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) combined with malnutrition results in decreased exercise capacity and a worse quality of life. We aimed to develop an observational case-control study to explore the effective and convenient method to identify potential individuals is lacking. This study included data from 251 patients with COPD and 85 participants in the control group. Parameters and body composition were compared between groups, and among patients with varied severity. The LASSO approach was employed to select the features for fitting a logistic model to predict the risk of malnutrition in patients with stable COPD. Patients with COPD exhibited significantly lower 6-min walk distance (6MWD), handgrip strength, fat-free mass index (FFMI), skeletal muscle mass (SMM) and protein. The significant predictors identified following LASSO selection included 6MWD, waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), GOLD grades, the COPD Assessment Test (CAT) score, and the prevalence of acute exacerbations. The risk score model yielded good accuracy (C-index, 0.866 [95% CI 0.824-0.909]) and calibration (Brier score = 0.150). After internal validation, the adjusted C-index and Brier score were 0.849, and 0.165, respectively. This model may provide primary physicians with a simple scoring system to identify malnourished patients with COPD and develop appropriate rehabilitation interventions.

Abstract
In May 2012, the 65th World Health Assembly (WHA) approved six global nutrition targets by 2025 aimed to reduce stunting in children under five by 40%, maintain childhood wasting below 5%, halt obesity, cut anemia in women by 50%, lower low birth weight prevalence by 30%, and increase exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) within the first 6 months to 50%. These targets were extended to 2030, with all of them remaining as originally planned, but the EBF one (increased to 70%), wasting and overweight (both objectives set to eliminate them to negligible concern). Mexico is projected to achieve only one of the six nutrition targets (wasting) by 2025, falling far short of the stunting, low birth weight, anemia, and exclusive breastfeeding for the updated goals by 2030. This letter to the editor describes the most recent prevalence of malnutrition among mothers and children in Mexico. It discusses the challenges pregnant women and children under five years of age face exercising their right to good food, nutrition, and development. The authors reflect on the urgent need to make structural changes to achieve the global nutrition targets by 2030, highlighting the paramount importance of addressing the profound structural obstacles in Mexico and how Mexico's government must prioritize poverty reduction, reduce the marked inequalities, enhance the quality of nutritional care and healthcare infrastructure, and implement climate-resilient agricultural practices to address this pressing issue.

Abstract
Malnutrition is more prevalent among children with cerebral palsy and a major factor for child morbidity and mortality in children with different co-morbidity, especially in Sub-Saharan Africa: The main aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to estimate the burden of malnutrition among children with cerebral palsy in Sub-Saharan Africa. We searched PubMed, Web of Science, Google Scholar, Research Gate, and institutional repositories for papers that reported the proportion of malnutrition among children with cerebral palsy that were published between December 2010 and September 2023. Data were retrieved using the standardized JBI data extraction checklist through Microsoft Excel, and then exported to STATA 17 for further analysis. DerSimonian and Laird's estimator was used to calculate the pooled effect size in the random-effects model. Statistics such as the Cochran Q test and I2 test were employed to measure heterogeneity. Egger's test and the funnel plot were used to look for publication bias. This systematic review and meta-analysis used 16 studies from Sub-Saharan Africa to estimate the proportion of malnutrition among 2,120 children with cerebral palsy. The pooled proportion of malnutrition among children with cerebral palsy in Sub-Saharan Africa by using random-effects model analysis was found to be 59.7% (95% CI; 49.8-69.6). The proportion of malnutrition was also estimated by sample sizes categorized as ≤ 120 and > 120, and the proportion of malnutrition was found to be 54.0 (95% CI: 44.7-63.3) and 64.5 (95% CI: 50.5-78.5). Moreover, the proportion of malnutrition was estimated by accounting for the difference in the year of publication. In this regard, the study classified before ≤ 2017 and > 2017, and the proportion of malnutrition was found to be 53.7 (95% CI: 38.0-69.3) and 62.5 (95% CI: 49.7-75.3) in Sub-Saharan Africa respectively. Malnutrition among children with cerebral in Sub-Saharan Africa was found to be very high. Hence, enhancing and developing strategic guidelines for malnutrition screening, prevention, and nutritional support are crucial among children with cerebral palsy. Furthermore, systematic review, randomized control trials, and qualitative studies are recommended to understand the burden more among children with cerebral palsy in the continent.

Abstract
The most common measures of childhood undernutrition are based on anthropometric measures such as height-for-age (stunting/chronic undernutrition) and weight-for-height (wasting/acute undernutrition). It is well recognised that the determinants of undernutrition are multiple, including food intake, dietary diversity, health, sanitation and women's status. Currently, most countries across the world including India use the globally accepted WHO-Multicentre Growth Reference Study (MGRS) growth standards (2006) for the purposes of measurement as well as for evaluating progress on these metrics. However, there is some discussion on the universal relevance of these standards, and in the Indian context, whether these standards overestimate the prevalence of stunting, considering differences in genetic potential for growth. This is especially relevant in the context of increasing burden of obesity and non-communicable diseases in India. Based on a detailed review of literature, policy documents and expert inputs, this review paper discusses the relevance of the WHO growth standards for height/stunting, in the context of India. Issues discussed related to the MGRS methodology include pooling of data and intersite and intrasite variability, opting for standards as opposed to references, and external validity. Other issues related to plasticity of stunting and the influence of maternal heights are also discussed, in the context of analysing the appropriateness of using universal growth standards. Based on the review, it is recommended that the current standards may continue to be used until a newer global standard is established through a similar study.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Patients with acute abdomen often experience reduced voluntary intake and a hypermetabolic process, leading to a high occurrence of malnutrition. The Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM) criteria have rapidly developed into a principal methodological tool for nutritional diagnosis. Additionally, machine learning is emerging to establish artificial intelligent-enabled diagnostic models, but the accuracy and robustness need to be verified. We aimed to establish an intelligence-enabled malnutrition diagnosis model based on GLIM for patients with acute abdomen. METHOD This study is a single-centre, cross-sectional observational investigation into the prevalence of malnutrition in patients with acute abdomen using the GLIM criteria. Data collection occurs on the day of admission, at 3 and 7 days post-admission, including biochemical analysis, body composition indicators, disease severity scoring, nutritional risk screening, malnutrition diagnosis and nutritional support information. The occurrence rate of malnutrition in patients with acute abdomen is analysed with the GLIM criteria based on the Nutritional Risk Screening 2002 and the Mini Nutritional Assessment Short-Form to investigate the sensitivity and accuracy of the GLIM criteria. After data cleansing and preprocessing, a machine learning approach is employed to establish a predictive model for malnutrition diagnosis in patients with acute abdomen based on the GLIM criteria. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION This study has obtained ethical approval from the Ethics Committee of the Sichuan Academy of Medical Sciences and Sichuan Provincial People's Hospital on 28 November 2022 (Yan-2022-442). The results of this study will be disseminated in peer-reviewed journals, at scientific conferences and directly to study participants. TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER ChiCTR2200067044.

Abstract
India has a substantial burden of undernutrition coupled with overweight and obesity at the other end of the spectrum of malnutrition. Nuh district, in the Haryana State in northern India, is an impoverished district in India. With an aim to investigate the problem of malnutrition in the community, a cross-sectional study was conducted in four villages of the Nuh district. Height/length, weight, and age data of children under 5 years were used to calculate three indices: weight-for-age, height-for-age, and weight-for-height. The body mass index was calculated for individuals older than 6 years. Associations between malnutrition and other factors were assessed using simple and multiple logistic regression to get adjusted coefficients. The total surveyed population comprised 11,496 individuals. Over 51% were female, and 13.2% of the surveyed population were children under 5 years. Almost half of the population was illiterate and unemployed. The prevalences of underweight, stunting, and wasting in children under 5 years were 37%, 53%, and 21%, respectively. The prevalences of underweight and stunting in the 6- to 19-year-old age group were 29% and 38%, respectively. The prevalence of overweight was 36% in the 20- to 40-year-old and > 60-year-old age groups, and 44% in the 41- to 60-year-old age group. Our findings reveal a considerable burden of undernutrition among children under 5 years and a dual burden of undernutrition and overnutrition in adults, highlighting the need to map these areas and sharpen our responses to mitigate the overwhelming and long-term consequences of malnutrition in the Nuh district.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS The association between sarcopenia and malnutrition has been poorly studied in the older population. The purpose of this study is to address the association between sarcopenia, according to different validated definitions, and nutritional status in a large population of community-dwelling older adults. METHODS Observational, cross-sectional study of the Geriatric Frailty Clinic (GFC) for Assessment of Frailty and Prevention of Disability, held by the "Gérontopôle" of the Toulouse University Hospital. Patients aged above 65 years who benefitted from a Dual X-ray Densitometry (DXA) during their assessment at the GFC from June 5th 2013 to January 28th 2020 were included. Sarcopenia was defined according to proposed validated definitions. The Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA) was used to stratify nutritional status, and identify patients with a poor nutritional status (at risk of malnutrition or malnourished, MNA <24). Multiple logistic regression analyses were performed between MNA and each sarcopenia definition adjusted for confounders. RESULTS Among the 938 patients with DXA data, a total of 809 (86.2 %) subjects were included in the analysis (mean age 81.8 ± 6.9 years, 527 females (65.1 %)). Prevalence of sarcopenia ranged from 12.6 % to 44.9 %, according to various definitions. Overall 244 (30.2 %) of the patients had a poor nutritional status (MNA-score <24), Baumgartner and Newman definitions of sarcopenia were both associated with low MNA-scores (OR = 4.69, CI 3.15-6.98 and OR = 2.30, CI 1.55-3.14, respectively), EWGSOP2 "confirmed sarcopenia" definition was also associated with low MNA-scores (OR = 3.68, CI 2.30-5.89), as well as for the lean mass definition according EWGSOP2 cut-off (OR 5.22 CI 3.52-7.73). Both FNIH and EWGSOP2 "probable sarcopenia" definitions were not associated with the risk of malnutrition. CONCLUSIONS In this study, the prevalence of sarcopenia ranged from 12.6 to 44.9 % according to various definitions. A score of MNA under 24, was associated with almost all of the sarcopenia definitions. This study reinforces the concept that malnutrition and sarcopenia are strictly related. When facing malnutrition in daily clinical practice, body composition should be assessed and the proposed nutritional intervention should be tailored by these results in order to prevent the onset of late-life disability.
