Abstract
In order to identify events/activities that are particularly stressful for farmers/ranchers, afarm stress survey based on the proportionate scaling method was mailed to a stratified random sample of 3000 Iowa farmers by the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service. The participants were asked to compare 62 life events and farm activities to a marriage (assigned a baseline rating of 50), decide if it was less stressful or more stressful, and then assign a stress rating between 1 and 100. As expected, the most stressful events were the death of a spouse or child. Other high-stress events were disabling injuries, foreclosure on a mortgage, divorce, machinery breakdown during harvest, and loss of crop to weather. Mean stress ratings varied by age, marital status, and type of farming enterprise. Farmers between the ages of 40-59 and 60-79 had the most items with high stress levels. Females had more high-stress items than males. Divorced farmers had fewer high-stress items than other respondents. Farmer's whose primary focus was raising horses had more high-stress items than other farm types. Significant outcomes of this study go beyond the specific mean stress ratings of the events and activities. The results indicate that farm stressors can be quantified using the proportionate scaling method and that the impact of the stressor is based not just on the event but is also dependent on the characteristics of the farmer (e.g., age, gender, marital status, etc.).

Abstract
Inhibition of protein deacetylation arrests cells in mitosis, but the mechanism is unknown. To understand why inhibiting protein deacetylation causes cell cycle arrest, we treated HeLa cells beyond G1/S transition with trichostatin A (TSA), a potent protein deacetylase inhibitor, and found that the cells arrested at prometaphase with ectopic spindles and unaligned chromosomes. The hyper-acetylated cells encountered a serious microtubule (MT)-kinetochore attachment problem, although the kinetochores are intact at ultrastructural level. By immunofluorescence staining of kinetochore proteins, we found that the pericentromeric H3K9Me3-HP1 pathway was disrupted and that the CENP-A-dependent outer plate protein dynamics of kinetochores was greatly diminished by the drug treatment. The treatment also caused the loss of chromosome passenger complex (CPC), the proposed error checking system, from centromere and impaired the microtubule dynamics of the cells. Overall, we propose that deacetylation inhibition impairs MT-kinetochore attachment through disrupting the centromere function and altering the kinetochore composition and MT dynamics.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To replicate a previously reported association with osteoarthritis (OA) of the promoter single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) rs10980705 in the endothelial differentiation gene 2 (EDG2). METHODS Five collections of samples, four from Europe and one from China, were studied. They included patients with 3 OA phenotypes: 1501 with knee OA, 1497 with hip OA and 376 with generalised OA. A total of 2521 controls were also studied. Allele and genotype frequencies of the rs10980705 SNP were analysed in each individual sample collection and in pooled data. In addition, a meta-analysis to incorporate results from the original Japanese report was performed. RESULTS The association of the rs10980705 SNP with knee OA was not replicated in any of the five sample collections studied or in their combined analysis (odds ratio (OR) 1.10, 95% CI 0.98 to 1.22; p = 0.10). Meta-analysis of all data, including the original Japanese study, did show association with knee OA (OR 1.15, 95% CI 1.06 to 1.26; p = 0.002) but the effect was accounted for by the Japanese data and was less significant than the original report. No association was found with hip OA or with generalised OA. CONCLUSIONS The original report of a promising genetic association between a druggable G-protein coupled receptor, EDG2, and knee OA has not been replicated. This lack of replication could be due to a modest effect of the promoter polymorphism that will require even larger studies (the winners curse) although a more pronounced effect in the Asian population vs Europeans cannot be excluded.

Abstract
The atomic structure of the graphene/α-SiO(2)(0001) interface under electric field F with different intensities is studied using the density functional theory method. Simulation results indicate that the atomic structure of the graphene/α-SiO(2)(0001) interface has only a slight change under the condition of F≤0.02 au. However, the distance between substrate and graphene d(0) changes evidently. Moreover, as F reaches 0.03 au, the formation of a C-O covalent bond on the interface is present, which would destroy the excellent electronic properties of graphene. Thus, there exists a maximum for F in application of the graphene.

Abstract
We report a novel phenomenon in carbon nanotube based ultra-fast mechanical devices, the trans-phonon effect, which resembles the transonic effects in aerodynamics. It is caused by dissipative resonance of nanotube phonons similar to the radial breathing mode, and subsequent drastic surge of the dragging force on the sliding tube, and multiple phonon barriers are encountered as the intertube sliding velocity reaches critical values. It is found that the trans-phonon effects can be tuned by applying geometric constraints or varying chirality combinations of the nanotubes.

Abstract
Hybrid ZnO-carbon nanotubes as well as nanodiamond-carbon nanotubes were synthesized via a straightforward process of plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition. For the former, ZnO nanoparticles were instantly coated on the tube surface in the final growing process of carbon nanotubes, while for the latter diamond nanoparticles were grown using pretreatment of a silicon substrate with Ni(NO(3))(2)·6H(2)O/Mg(NO(3))(2)·6H(2)O alcohol solution prior to deposition and a high H(2)/CH(4) gas flow ratio in the deposition process. The morphology and microstructure of the obtained hybrid materials were characterized by transmission electron microscopy. Both hybrid ZnO-carbon nanotubes and nanodiamond-carbon nanotubes exhibited excellent field emission properties.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Traditional therapies for asthma and allergic rhinitis (AR) such as corticosteroids and antihistamines are not without limitations and side effects. The use of complementary and alternative approaches to treat allergic airways disease, including the use of herbal and dietary supplements, is increasing but their efficacy and safety are relatively understudied. Previously, we have demonstrated that gamma-tocopherol (gammaT), the primary form of dietary vitamin E, is more effective than alpha-tocopherol, the primary form found in supplements and tissue, in reducing systemic inflammation induced by non-immunogenic stimuli. OBJECTIVE We used allergic Brown Norway rats to test the hypothesis that a dietary supplement with gammaT would protect from adverse nasal and pulmonary responses to airway allergen provocation. METHODS Ovalbumin (OVA)-sensitized Brown Norway rats were treated orally with gammaT before intranasal provocation with OVA. Twenty-four hours after two challenges, histopathological changes in the nose, sinus and pulmonary airways were compared with gene expression and cytokine production in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid and plasma. RESULTS We found that acute dosing for 4 days with gammaT was sufficient to provide broad protection from inflammatory cell recruitment and epithelial cell alterations induced by allergen challenge. Eosinophil infiltration into airspaces and tissues of the lung, nose, sinus and nasolacrimal duct was blocked in allergic rats treated with gammaT. Pulmonary production of soluble mediators PGE(2), LTB(4) and cysteinyl leukotrienes, and nasal expression of IL-4, -5, -13 and IFN-gamma were also inhibited by gammaT. Mucous cell metaplasia, the increase in the number of goblet cells and amounts of intraepithelial mucus storage, was induced by allergen in both pulmonary and nasal airways and decreased by treatment with gammaT. CONCLUSIONS Acute treatment with gammaT inhibits important inflammatory pathways that underlie the pathogenesis of both AR and asthma. Supplementation with gammaT may be a novel complementary therapy for allergic airways disease.

Abstract
In this work, the glass transition of water was studied with density functional theory. The transition temperature was determined by measuring the heat capacity Cp of low-density amorphous water during rapid heating. This technique ensures that all measurements were implemented without crystallization occurring, which is difficult to be achieved experimentally. The results showed that the glass transition occurs at 171 K, which is much higher than the reported value of 136 K. In addition, the triply hydrogen-bonded water molecules were found when T > 180 K, demonstrating the existence of the liquid structure at the higher temperature range.

Abstract
Neuromedin U (NMU) is a family of peptides found in the gut and the central nervous system [Neuroscience 25 (1988) 797; Biochem. Biophys. Res. Commun. 130 (1985) 1078]. While several peripheral activities such as uterus stimulating and hypertensive effects have been described for NMU [Biochem. Biophys. Res. Commun. 130 (1985) 1078], its role in the CNS remains poorly understood. Recently, we reported the identification of two receptors for NMU (NMU1R and NMU2R), and demonstrated that NMU may play a role in regulating feeding behavior. The central effect of NMU is likely mediated primarily via NMU2R, since NMU1R is detectable only in the periphery, but not in the brain [Nature 406 (2000) 70]. In this report, we describe detailed mapping of NMU2R mRNA expression in the rat brain by in situ hybridization. The most intense signals were observed in the ependymal cell layer along the wall of the third ventricle in the hypothalamus, CA1 region of the hippocampus, indusium griseum and septohippocampal nucleus. Moderate expression was detected in the hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus, dorsal raphe nucleus as well as a number of other brain structures. The presence of NMU2R in the hypothalamus is consistent with its role in energy balance. Significant levels of expression of NMU2R elsewhere in the brain may suggest additional physiological functions for this neuropeptide.
