Abstract
AbstractThe present authors recently introduced the mechanical deflection of cantilever microbeams as an experimental technique for measuring the strength and stiffness of thin films.[1] The technique utilizes conventional integrated circuit (IC) fabrication to process the samples, a Nanoindenter to deflect the cantilever beams mechanically, and simple elastic beam theory to analyze the data. This paper will review the technique and describe some of its current applications.

Abstract
It was recently reported that a UK company has developed a naturally non-toxic magnetoferritin to act as a draw solute for drawing water in forward osmosis process. The gist of this technology is the utilization of the magnetic nanoparticle and high-gradient magnetic separation for draw solute separation and reuse. However, any demonstration on this technology has not been reported yet. In this study, a feasibility test of magnetic separation using magnetic nanoparticle was therefore performed to investigate the possibility of magnetic separation in water treatment such as desalination. Basically, a magnetic separation system consisted of a column packed with a bed of magnetically susceptible wools placed between the poles of electromagnet and Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticle was used as a model nanoparticle. The effect of nanoparticle size to applied magnetic field in separation column was experimentally investigated and the magnetic field distribution in a magnet gap and the magnetic field gradient around stainless steel wool wire were analyzed through numerical simulation. The amount of magnetic nanoparticle captured in the separator column increased as the magnetic field strength and particle size increased. As a result, if magnetic separation is intended to be used for draw solute separation and reuse, both novel nanoparticle and large-scale high performance magnetic separator must be developed.

Abstract
Abstract
Background: Observational studies and randomized trials have demonstrated an association between hormone replacement therapy (HRT) use and increased risk for breast cancer. However, this risk may vary by age and other factors, including breast density and race/ethnicity. Using data from the Breast Cancer Surveillance Consortium (BCSC), we investigate whether self-reported HRT use in the peri-menopausal and immediate post-menopausal age groups is associated with breast cancer, and also whether risk associated with HRT use differs by breast density and race. Subjects and Methods: The BCSC is a longitudinal registry of mammography screening in seven U.S. centers. In the breast cancer risk prediction model developed by Barlow et al (J Natl Cancer Inst 2006 98:1204-14), HRT use and ten other features were identified as risk factorsfor breast cancer. Data for our study consists of 1,642,824 screens and 9,300 breast cancers among the post-menopausal women aged > 44 in this cohort. Logistic regression models were used to estimate odds ratios for breast cancer associated with HRT use within race, age, and density strata, adjusting for other variables from the Barlow model. Multiple imputation methods were used to accommodate missing data for HRT (14%) and other predictors.
Results: Breast cancer risk for HRT use varied by age, with no risk excess among women aged 45-49 and risk excess of 20% or greater for women aged 50-64 (Table 1). Women >64 had a smaller excess risk with HRT use. There was no significant excess risk at any age for Black women, while White women age 50-64 had > 20% excess risk for HRT use. White women with higher breast density had increased risk with HRT use, while Black women did not.

Conclusions: In this large cohort of mammography-screened women, HRT use did not increase breast cancer risk in the peri-menopausal period (age 45-49). Women with low breast density had smaller risk increments associated with HRT than those with high density. For Black women, increased breast cancer risk due to HRT was not apparent at any age or breast density category.

Abstract
Analysis of the Greenland ice core covering the period from 3000 to 500 years ago-the Greek, Roman, Medieval and Renaissance times-shows that lead is present at concentrations four times as great as natural values from about 2500 to 1700 years ago (500 B.C. to 300 A.D.). These results show that Greek and Roman lead and silver mining and smelting activities polluted the middle troposphere of the Northern Hemisphere on a hemispheric scale two millennia ago, long before the Industrial Revolution. Cumulative lead fallout to the Greenland Ice Sheet during these eight centuries was as high as 15 percent of that caused by the massive use of lead alkyl additives in gasoline since the 1930s. Pronounced lead pollution is also observed during Medieval and Renaissance times.

Abstract
Leukocyte activation, including adhesion molecule expression, oxygen radical generation and, in animal studies, pseudopod formation, is a hallmark of hypertension. This study examined pseudopod and bleb formation and demonstrates that leukocytes from hypertensive individuals are more susceptible to produce membrane blebs than leukocytes from normotensive individuals. Bleb formation is likely indicative of apoptosis, thus this observation adds to previous observations of increased apoptosis in various tissues in hypertension.

Abstract
The coordination between the cell cycle stages of nuclear donor cells and host oocytes has a critical effect on the development of embryos produced by somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT). Here, we investigated (1) whether roscovitine, an inhibitor of cyclin-dependent kinases (CDK) could arrest canine somatic cells at S/G2 phase of the cell cycle; (2) whether IVM metaphase II (MII) oocyte could be induced to telophase II (TII) after activation. Last, we investigated embryo development ability of nonactivated oocytes (MII) or activated oocytes (TII) fused with somatic cells at different stages of the cell cycle. Dog fetal fibroblasts were treated with roscovitine (30 or 60 μg mL-1 at 24, 48, or 72 h) and a control group of donor cells was cultured to reach confluency. The cells were then fixed and stained with 1 mg mL-1 propidium iodide for flow cytometric analysis. For SCNT, IVM dog oocytes were obtained by flushing (approximately 72 h after ovulation) from the oviducts of oocyte donor dog (Canis familiaris) and divided into 2 groups; nonactivated oocytes (MII) and activated oocytes (TII) by 10 μg mL-1 calcium ionophore for 4 min. Following preparation of each donor cell arrested in G0 and G2/M phase, cells of G0 stage were placed into enucleated MII oocytes (MII-G0) and cells of G2/M-phase were placed into enucleated TII oocytes (TII-G2/M). After fusion by electric stimulation, the MII-G0 group was chemically activated and cultured in modified SOF medium (mSOF), and the TII-G2/M group was cultured in mSOF without activation. The embryo developmental competence was estimated by assessing in vitro development under the microscope. Data were analyzed using a statistical analysis system program. Based on flow cytometry, the frequency of cells arrested at G2/M-phase in the 30 and 60 μg mL-1 roscovitine groups was significantly higher than that in control (31.95 and 25.99% v. 19.79%, respectively), but differences were not observed between the 30 and 60 μg mL-1 roscovitine groups (P > 0.05). Also, a significant increase in the proportion of cells at G2/M-phase was observed at 48 and 72 h in both roscovitine groups compared with the group not treated with roscovitine. The proportion of cells at G2/M-phase in the 60 μg mL-1 group at 48 h and the 30 μg mL-1 group at 72 h was the highest among all treatments. For the TII-G2/M group, we injected into enucleated TII oocyte and selected a large cell that arrested at G2/M-phase in cells cultured with 60 μg mL-1 roscovitine for 48 h. For the result of in vitro development of cloned embryo from MII-G0 and TII-G2/M, TII-G2/M group (39.4 and 7.8%) showed an increased cleavage rate and development to 8 cells compared with MII-G0 (23.5 and 2.9%). In the present study, we demonstrated that, in combination with nuclear donor cells at specific cell cycle stages, MII and TII dog oocytes are similarly effective in supporting the reprogramming of somatic cell nuclei.
