Abstract
We report the growth of ultrathin single-crystal ZnO nanobelts by using a Ag-catalyzed vapor transport method. Extensive transmission electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy measurements reveal that the thickness of the ultrathin ZnO nanobelts is approximately 2 nm. Scanning electron microscopy and post-growth annealing studies suggest a '1D branching and 2D filling' growth process. Our results demonstrate the critical role of catalyst in the deterministic synthesis of nanomaterials with the desired morphology. In addition, these ultrafine nanobelts exhibit stable field emission with unprecedented high emission current density of 40.17 mA cm(-2). These bottom-up building blocks of ultrathin ZnO nanobelts may facilitate the construction of advanced electronic and photonic nanodevices.

Abstract
Lasing characteristics of randomly assembled ZnO nanowires (NWs) coated with different thickness of MgO layers are investigated. It is found that the MgO coated randomly assembled ZnO NWs demonstrate random lasing action and the formation of coherent optical feedback is dependent on the thickness of MgO coating. Pump threshold of the MgO coated randomly assembled ZnO NWs increases with the increase of MgO thickness. Nevertheless, the appropriate use of MgO coating can reduce the pump threshold by approximately 30% and the corresponding characteristic temperature can be improved by 28 K.

Abstract
In single crystals of Eu(1-x)Sr(x)Fe(2-y)Co(y)As(2), Co doping suppresses spin-density wave (SDW) ordering and induces a superconducting transition. A resistivity reentrance due to the antiferromagnetic ordering of Eu(2+) spins is observed, indicating the competition between antiferromagnetism (AFM) and superconductivity (SC). It is striking that the resistivity reentrance can be completely suppressed by a small magnetic field due to a field-induced metamagnetic transition from AFM to ferromagnetism (FM). The resistivity reentrance can also be suppressed by the substitution of Eu(2+) ions with nonmagnetic Ba(2+)/Sr(2+) to completely destroy the AFM ordering. These results indicate that the AFM order appears destructive to SC, while FM can coexist with the superconductivity. Further we find that magnon excitation exists in AFM ordering and can be suppressed by an applied field. Coexistence of SC from the FeAs layer and the inner field produced by the ferromagnetic Eu(2+) layer suggest a possible p-wave component in the superconducting order parameter.

Abstract
Computer and robot assistance in craniotomy/craniectomy procedures is intended to increase precision and efficiency of the removal of calvarial tumours, enabling the preoperative design and manufacturing of the corresponding implant. In the framework of the CRANIO project, an active robotic system was developed to automate the milling processes based on a predefined resection planning. This approach allows for a very efficient milling process, but lacks feedback of the intra-operative process to the surgeon. To better integrate the surgeon into the process, a new teleoperated synergistic architecture was designed. This enables the surgeon to realize changes during the procedure and use their human cognitive capabilities. The preoperative planning information is used as guidance for the user interacting with the system through a master—slave architecture. In this article, the CRANIO system is presented together with this new synergistic approach. Experiments have been performed to evaluate the accuracy of the system in active and synergistic modes for the bone milling procedure. The laboratory studies showed the general feasibility of the new concept for the selected medical procedure and determined the accuracy of the system. Although the integration of the surgeon partially reduces the efficiency of the milling process compared with a purely active (automatic) milling, it provides more feedback and flexibility to the user during the intra-operative procedure. Abstract
We demonstrate, both theoretically and experimentally, that cation vacancy can be the origin of ferromagnetism in intrinsic dilute magnetic semiconductors. The vacancies can be controlled to tune the ferromagnetism. Using Li-doped ZnO as an example, we found that while Li itself is nonmagnetic, it generates holes in ZnO, and its presence reduces the formation energy of Zn vacancy, and thereby stabilizes the zinc vacancy. Room temperature ferromagnetism with p type conduction was observed in pulsed laser deposited ZnO:Li films with certain doping concentration and oxygen partial pressure.

Abstract
Salicylate causes a moderate hearing loss and tinnitus in humans at high-dose levels. Salicylate-induced hearing loss has been attributed to impaired sound amplification by outer hair cells (OHCs) through its direct action on the OHC motility sensor and/or motor. However, there is a disparity of salicylate concentrations between the clinical and animal studies, i.e., extremely high extracellular concentrations of salicylate (from 1 to 10 mM) is required to produce a significant reduction of electromotility in animal studies. Such concentrations are above the clinical/physiological range for humans. Here, we showed that clinical/physiological concentration range of salicylate caused concentration-dependent and reversible reductions in I(K,n) (KCNQ4) and subsequent depolarization of OHCs. Salicylate reduced the maximal tail current of the activation curve of I(K,n) without altering the voltage-sensitivity (V(half)). The salicylate-induced reduction of I(K,n) was almost completely blocked by linopirdine (0.1 mM) and BaCl₂ (10 mM). Consistent with the finding in OHCs, salicylate significantly reduced KCNQ4-mediated current expressed in Chinese hamster ovarian (CHO) cells by comparable amplitude to OHCs without significantly shifting V(half). Nonstationary fluctuation analysis shows that salicylate significantly reduced the estimated single-channel current amplitude and numbers. Intracellular Ca²+ elevation resulting from cytoplasmic acidosis also contributes to the current reduction of I(K,n) (KCNQ4) of OHCs. These results indicate a different model for the salicylate-induced hearing loss through the reduction of KCNQ4 and subsequent depolarization of OHCs, which reduces the driving force for transduction current and electromotility. The major mechanism underlying the reduction of I(K,n) (KCNQ4) is the direct blocking action of salicylate on KCNQ4.

Abstract
It is unclear to what extent the same set of environmental or genetic factors regulate objective intermediate asthma phenotypes. We examined heritabilities of these phenotypes and estimated their environmental and genetic overlap. We studied baseline lung function (forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV(1)), forced vital capacity (FVC) and FEV(1)/FVC), bronchial hyperresponsiveness, number of positive skin prick tests (SPT) to 11 allergens, serum total immunoglobulin (Ig)E, number of positive specific IgE tests to four allergens and eosinophil counts. 103 twin pairs were studied (46 monozygotic and 57 dizygotic; mean age: 22.5 yrs, range: 17.0-27.0 yrs). Univariate and bivariate genetic analyses were performed after adjustment for significant covariates. All intermediate asthma phenotypes showed significant heritabilities (47-83%). Most phenotypes were substantially correlated, which was mainly due to shared genetic factors. Pairs of phenotypes with the largest genetic correlations were specific IgE and SPT (0.98), and total IgE with specific IgE (0.87), with SPT (0.72), and with eosinophils (0.62). SPT showed significant environmental correlations with total IgE (0.65), specific IgE (0.70) and bronchial hyperresponsiveness (0.44). Genetic effects explain the majority of the variation in objective intermediate asthma phenotypes. Additionally, correlations between pairs of these traits are also mainly explained by genetic rather than environmental factors.

Abstract
Multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) are exposed to a transient and strong liquid jet flow created by a pair of differently sized laser-induced cavitation bubbles. The position and size of the bubbles are controlled with a spatial light modulator within a 15 microm thick liquid gap. Depending on the tube's position with respect to this jet flow, rotation, translation, and a bending deformation is observed with a high-speed camera recording at up to 300,000 frames per second. By measuring the decay time of the respective bending modes we determine the flexural rigidity of MWCNTs to be on the range of 0.45-4.06x10(-19) N m2. The average diameter of the MWCNTs is 117.8+/-6.7 nm with a thickness of 4.6+/-0.75 nm, yielding a Young's modulus between 0.033-0.292 TPa.

Abstract
Accessibility to the bulbar conjunctival microvasculature provides a means to assess blood supply to the cerebral cortex and thus optimize therapeutic interventions designed to prevent or reduce the risk of cerebral vascular disease and stroke. The feasibility of a method for quantitative measurements of conjunctiva blood vessel diameter, blood velocity, and flow in the human eye is reported. The method is based on slit lamp biomicroscope digital imaging coupled with a space time image analysis technique. A sequence of conjunctiva microvasculature images was captured at a rate of 50 Hz. The images were analyzed to determine blood vessel diameter, velocity and flow. Blood vessel diameter measurements ranged between 8.7 and 24.3 microns, with a mean value of 15.5 microns. Blood flow rate ranged between 27.3 and 296.9 pl/s, with a mean value of 111.8 pl/s. The relationship between blood flow and vessel diameter was fit with a power law curve (R=0.87). The application of this technique for in vivo quantitative assessment of blood flow dynamics has potential to impact diagnosis and monitoring of various cardiovascular and blood disorders.

Abstract
AIMS/HYPOTHESIS Excess accumulation of vascular extracellular matrix (ECM) is an important pathological process in cardiovascular diseases including diabetes-associated atherosclerosis. We explored how a recently identified molecule, cell division autoantigen 1 (CDA1), influences the profibrotic TGF-beta pathway leading to vascular ECM accumulation. METHODS Expression levels of genes encoding for CDA1, TGF-beta and connective tissue growth factor (CTGF) were examined in aorta from Apoe(-/-) mice with or without diabetes. We used retroviral and adenoviral constructs to knockdown or overexpress Tspyl2, the gene encoding CDA1, in mouse vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) with or without TGF-beta treatment in order to demonstrate the role of CDA1 in TGF-beta signalling. RESULTS In vivo studies indicated that the mRNA levels of CDA1-encoding gene Tspyl2 and protein levels of CDA1 were elevated in the aorta of diabetic Apoe(-/-) mice, accompanied by increased levels of Tgf-beta (also known as Tgfb1), Ctgf and ECM accumulation. In vitro studies in vascular cells showed that TGF-beta treatment rapidly increased CDA1 protein levels, which then amplified TGF-beta signalling leading to upregulation of ECM genes. Knockdown of CDA1-encoding gene Tspyl2 to reduce cellular CDA1 level markedly attenuated TGF-beta-stimulated MAD homologue 3 (drosophila; SMAD3) phosphorylation and transcriptional activities. CDA1 overproduction increased and Tspyl2 knockdown decreased expression of TGF-beta receptor type I, TbetarI (also known as Tgfbr1), but not TGF-beta receptor type II, TbetarII (also known as Tgfbr2), providing a mechanism for CDA1's action in modulating TGF-beta signalling. Knockdown of CDA1-encoding gene Tspyl2 also blocked the profibrotic effect of TGF-beta in VSMCs. CONCLUSIONS/INTERPRETATION CDA1 plays an important role in vascular ECM accumulation by amplifying TGF-beta signalling. This is critical for the profibrotic effect of TGF-beta in the vasculature. CDA1 is therefore a potential target for attenuating vascular ECM accumulation caused by enhanced TGF-beta action, as seen in diabetic atherosclerosis.

Abstract
To investigate the effect of light cue on the resetting of the peripheral clocks, we examined the resetting processes of clock genes (Per1, Per2, Bmal1, Cry1, Dec1, and Rev-erbalpha) in the liver and heart of rats after the feeding and light-dark (LD) reversal via a 24-h light period transition. The liver clock was reset quickly within 3 days, while the heart clock needed a longer time course of 5-7 days to be completely re-entrained. Moreover, the re-entrainment of Per1 and Per2 in the liver clock was more rapid than that of the other four clock genes, suggesting the important role of these two clock genes in initiating the circadian resetting of the hepatic clock. However, the resetting rates of these two clock genes were as similar as the others in the heart clock. Therefore, the resetting mechanisms underlining these two peripheral clocks may be totally distinct. Furthermore, the re-entrainment of the liver and heart clocks were relatively lengthened after the feeding and LD reversal via a light period transition compared to a dark period transition, suggesting a simultaneous shift of feeding schedule and the LD cycle may facilitate the circadian resetting in rats.

This approach allows for a very efficient milling process, but lacks feedback of the intra-operative process to the surgeon. To better integrate the surgeon into the process, a new teleoperated synergistic architecture was designed. This enables the surgeon to realize changes during the procedure and use their human cognitive capabilities. The preoperative planning information is used as guidance for the user interacting with the system through a master—slave architecture. In this article, the CRANIO system is presented together with this new synergistic approach. Experiments have been performed to evaluate the accuracy of the system in active and synergistic modes for the bone milling procedure. The laboratory studies showed the general feasibility of the new concept for the selected medical procedure and determined the accuracy of the system. Although the integration of the surgeon partially reduces the efficiency of the milling process compared with a purely active (automatic) milling, it provides more feedback and flexibility to the user during the intra-operative procedure.

Abstract
Primary intrapulmonary thymomas (PIT), which are intrapulmonary tumours without an associated mediastinal component, are very rare; only 29 cases of PIT have been described in the literature since 1951. This report presents a case of PIT in a 59-year old Chinese woman with a type A thymoma (including its pathogenesis, clinical pathological characteristics, immunological phenotype, treatment and prognosis), in the context of a review of the current literature. The origin of thymomas in this unusual location remains unknown. In this case, immunohistochemical analysis demonstrated that the epithelial component was strongly positive for cytokeratin and focally reactive for epithelial membrane antigen. It is concluded that PIT should be considered when the histopathological appearance of a lung tumour is not typical of other pulmonary neoplasms. Complete resection appears sufficient in non-malignant tumours, while in cases of partial resection or malignancy, adjuvant radiotherapy should be considered. Long-term regular clinical follow-up is also warranted, due to the risk of late local recurrence.

Abstract
Legg—Calvé—Perthes disease (LCPD) is a significant problem in healthcare because it so commonly affects young adults and immature athletes, primarily gymnasts. In this paper, a two-degree-of-freedom (2-DOF) hip exoskeleton device was developed for study on an immature animal model of exercise-induced LCPD. The exoskeleton device can reproduce the repetitive actions and forceful centrality impingements on the coxafemoral head that occur in sports such as gymnastics and acrobatics. It initiated a new method rather than the traditional medical or physiological operation method to establish an animal model of LCPD and allowed for the development and testing of new treatments. Ten immature New Zealand white rabbits were selected for the experiment. Their right legs were driven to achieve repetitive extension/flexion and abduction/adduction beyond the normal range of motion, with centrality impingements at the maximum flexion position, while their left legs were kept in the initial healthy status and acted as the comparing reference. Four weeks later, the basic symptoms of early LCPD of the femoral head appeared. The results of X-ray, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), gross anatomy observation, and H-E section also revealed it.
