Abstract
BACKGROUND The subtype distribution of lymphoid neoplasms in Southwest China was analyzed according to WHO classifications. This study aims to analyze subtype distribution of lymphomas in southwest China. METHODS Lymphoid neoplasms diagnosed within 9 years in a single institution in Southwest China were analyzed according to the WHO classification. RESULTS From January 2000 to December 2008, a total number of 6,382 patients with lymphoma were established, of which mature B-cell neoplasms accounted for 56%, mature T- and NK-cell neoplasms occupied 26%, and precursor lymphoid neoplasms and Hodgkin lymphomas were 5% and 13%, respectively. Mixed cellularity (76%) was the major subtype of classical Hodgkin lymphoma; and the bimodal age distribution was not observed. The top six subtypes of non-Hodgkin lymphoma were as follows: diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, extranodal NK/T-cell lymphoma, nasal type, extranodal marginal zone lymphoma of mucosa associated lymphoid tissue, follicular lymphoma, precursor lymphoid neoplasms, and chronic lymphocytic leukemia/small lymphocytic lymphoma. Extranodal lymphomas comprised about half of all cases, and most frequently involved Waldeyer's ring, gastrointestinal tract, sinonasal region and skin. CONCLUSIONS The lymphoid neoplasms of Southwest China displayed some epidemiologic features similar to those reported in literature from western and Asian countries, as well as other regions of China, whereas some subtypes showed distinct features. The high frequency of mature T/NK cell neoplasms and extranodal lymphomas, especially for extranodal NK/T-cell lymphoma, nasal type, is the most outstanding characteristic of this series.

Abstract
Perhaps the most difficult practical decision for neurosurgeons these days is whether to secure aneurysms during the intermediate period (4-10 days) after aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). We retrospectively reviewed a series of 115 patients with a Hunt-Hess grade I-III upon admission who were admitted 4-10 days after initial supratentorial aneurysmal SAH. Patients who underwent active treatment in the intermediate period were assigned to the intermediate group (n = 49) while those who accepted delayed obliteration of a ruptured aneurysm (11-30 days) were assigned to the late group (n = 66). The demographic characteristics, size and site of aneurysms, and clinical conditions were well balanced in the two groups. There was no difference in outcome between the two groups according to the Glasgow Outcome Scale (GOS) at discharge or a six-month follow-up. Rebleeding before aneurysms obliteration was the leading factor resulting in poor outcome. In conclusion, for patients with supratentorial aneurysmal SAH who were in good clinical condition upon admission, active treatment during the intermediate period offered a good chance of a favorable outcome. An even larger number of patients from randomized clinical trials might be necessary to draw more reliable conclusions.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to clarify the effect of heme oxygenase (HO)-1 on the kidney during septic shock in rats. Eighty healthy and clean Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into 4 groups: control group (group C) , septic shock group (group SS) , lipopolysaccharide plus ZnPP-IX group (group LZ) , and ZnPP-IX (group Z) . The plasma levels of COHb, Cr, and BUN; the urine levels of gamma-GTP, alpha1-MG, RBP, and NAG; and MDA content, SOD activity; HO-1mRNA; HO-2mRNA; HO-1 protein; and HO-2 protein from kidney were measured. The plasma levels of Cr and BUN; the urine levels of gamma-GTP, alpha1-MG, RBP, and NAG; and MDA content from kidney in group SS were obviously higher than in group C and Z (both P < 0.05), respectively, but lower than in group LZ (both P < 0.05), respectively. In contrast, the plasma levels of COHb and SOD activity from kidney in group SS were obviously lower than those in group C and Z (both P < 0.05), respectively, but higher than in group LZ (both P < 0.05), respectively. The HO-1mRNA and HO-1 protein of nephridial tissue in group LZ were obviously higher than in group C and Z, respectively (both P < 0.05), but lower than in group SS, respectively (both P < 0.05). There were no significant differences of HO-2mRNA and HO-2 protein among these 4 groups (both P > 0.05). It is concluded that upregulation of the HO-1 protein might contribute to the protection of kidney during septic shock in rats.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the expression of neuroglobin (Ngb) in frontal cortex, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and serum in rats with brain injury induced by LPS and to elucidate its significance. METHODS Seventy adult Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into LPS (n = 60, with injection of 0.1 mg/kg LPS into cistern) and control (C, n = 10, with injection of equal volume of isotonic saline into cistern) groups, with 10 rats in each group. The plasma, CSF as well as frontal cortex from sacrificed rats were collected in LPS group at 3, 6, 12, 24, 48, 72 post injection hour (PIH), with 10 rats at each time point. The protein expression of Ngb was measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and Western blot. Expression of Ngb in frontal cortex was determined by SP. Water content of frontal cortex was assessed by drying method. The correlation among Ngb contents in serum, CSF, frontal cortex and water content of frontal cortex was analyzed with multiple comparison. RESULTS Ngb expression (by ELISA): Ngb expression of frontal cortex, CSF, and serum in LPS group was higher than that in C group at each time point, and it peaked at48 PBH (35.4 +/- 3.9, 22.7 +/- 3.1, 14.4 +/- 2.8 ng/mL, respectively, P < 0.01). Ngb expression (by Western blot): Ngb protein with relative molecular mass of 17 x 10(3) was observed in each group. Ngb expression detected by Western blot was similar to that detected by ELISA. Brain water content was significantly greater in LPS group than that of C group at 6-72 PIH (P < 0.01), and it peaked at 48 PBH (83.3 +/- 1.9)%. Ngb contents in serum, CSF, frontal cortex, and water content of frontal cortex were positively correlated with multiple comparison ( y = 0.631-0.719, P < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS Up-regulation of Ngb expression in brain injury induced by LPS is correlated with duration after challenge of LPS.

Abstract
Gastric involvement of extranodal natural killer/T-cell lymphoma, nasal type is extremely rare, and its clinicopathologic features are also poorly understood. Until now, only 4 cases have been reported in literature. In this article, 3 cases of extranodal natural killer/T-cell lymphoma, nasal type are reported. In this current series, one patient (case 2) was admitted to emergency due to life-threatened hemorrhage of the upper-digestive tract and the volume of blood loss was about 2000 mL. For case 3, the sample was a small piece of gastroendoscopy biopsy tissue. It is a challenge for pathologist to make the diagnosis for this special type of tumor. In all, 2 of 3 cases had a relevant history of midfacial extranodal natural killer/T-cell lymphoma, nasal type before. The other patient died of tumor 2 months later with no history of the tumor when she was alive. Literature review was carried out; The cases reported in this article are documented and compared with the 4 previously reported cases of tumor.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to develop a tumour vaccine with the ability to induce and expand higher affinity cytotoxic T lymphocytes and stimulate an effective antitumour immune response. The hypothesis tested was that G422 glioblastoma cells modified with B7-1 and interferon (IFN)-γ genes could serve as a tumour vaccine. It was found that therapeutic subcutaneous immunizations with this tumour vaccine significantly induced a cytotoxic T-cell response and prolonged the survival of female Kuming mice with intracerebral G422 tumour isografts. The data collectively suggested that G422 glioblastoma cells genetically modified with B7-1 and IFN-γ genes could serve as a tumour vaccine.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To study the clinicopathologic features, diagnosis and differential diagnosis of extramedullary infiltration of acute monocytic leukemia/monoblastic sarcoma. METHODS Five cases of extramedullary infiltration of acute monocytic leukemia/monoblastic sarcoma were selected from 102 cases of myeloid sarcoma diagnosed during the period from 1990 to 2006. The clinicopathologic findings and followup data were retrospectively analyzed. Immunohistochemical study was also carried out with SP method. RESULTS Among the 5 cases studied, 3 were males and 2 were females, including 2 children and 3 adults. Generalized lymphadenopathy was found in 4 patients and skin lesions were observed in 2 patients. The tumor cells in all cases were positive for CD68 (KP1), CD68 (PGM1), lysozyme and CD45. They were negative for MPO, CD15, CD163, TdT, CD117, T and B cell markers. The Ki-67 index ranged from 40% to 80%. Follow-up data were available in all the 5 patients. Four of the 5 patients died of the disease, with the average survival time being 6.25 months. CONCLUSIONS Monoblastic sarcoma is a rare disease with poor prognosis. It is almost impossible to distinguish monoblastic sarcoma from granulocytic sarcoma and other types of small round cell tumors on the basis of morphologic examination alone. Immunohistochemistry is mandatory for a correct diagnosis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To observe the immune modulatory and therapeutical effect of Shenqi tablet (SQT) in treating recurrent genital herpes. METHODS Sixty-three patients were randomly divided into two groups, the SQT group (34 cases) and the control group (29 cases). The immunologic function of patients was determined before and after treatment and the recurrence rate of two groups was compared. RESULTS In the SQT group after treatment, CD3, CD4 and CD4/CD8 ratio raised, CD8 percent lowered, serum interleukin 2 (SIL-2) and RBC-C3b raised and serum SIL-2 receptor lowered (all P < 0.05), while in the control group, the above-mentioned parameters were not changed significantly. Follow-up conducted 6 months after treatment showed that the recurrence rate in the SQT group was 26.5% (9 cases), which was lower than that in the control group (72.4%, 21 cases) significantly (P < 0.01). CONCLUSION SQT has immune modulatory effect in patients with recurrent genital herpes, it could reduce the recurrence rate.
