Abstract
Silicosis is one of the most frequent, rapidly developing, and lethal types of pneumoconiosis. However, our understanding of the underlying mechanisms of its pathogenesis and progress remains unclear. We investigated the fundamental processes of silicosis incidence and progression using a combination of lung function testing, histopathology, 16 S rRNA, untargeted metabolomics, and cytokine chips at different exposure times (4 or 8 weeks). The results show that silica exposure damages lung tissue reduces lung function, and increases with time. Cytokines with time-specific properties were found in lung lavage fluid: IFN-γ (4 weeks; P<0.05), TNF-α, M-CSF, GM-CSF (8 weeks; P<0.01). In addition, silica exposure for different periods interferes to varying degrees with the metabolism of lipids. The composition of the intestinal microbiota changed with increasing exposure time and there were time-specific: Allobaculum, Turicibacter、Jeotgalicoccu、Coprococcus 1 (4 weeks; P<0.05), Ruminococcaceae NK4A214 group、Ruminiclostridium 5 (8 weeks; P<0.05). We found strong associations between cytokines, gut microbiota changes, and metabolic disturbances at different exposure times. These results suggest that time-specific changes in crosstalk among cytokines, the gut microbiota, and metabolites may be a potential mechanism for silica-induced lung injury.

Abstract
High-risk human papillomavirus (HPV)-related cancers consist of cervical cancer, anal cancer, penile cancer, vulvar cancer, vaginal cancer, and head and neck cancer (HNC). Of these, the disease burden of HNC is second only to cervical cancer. HNC mostly originates from malignant lesions of squamous epithelial cells and mainly includes oral cavity cancer, pharyngeal cancer (including nasopharyngeal cancer, oropharyngeal cancer, and hypopharyngeal cancer), and laryngeal cancer. Tobacco use, alcohol abuse, and HPV infection are three primary risk factors. Recently, there is an upward trend of HNC incidence globally, especially in high-income countries. In China, the disease burden and trends of HPV-related HNC are still not clear. A few small sample size and single-center studies suggest a high HPV prevalence and increasing trend in HNC. Methodological differences in HPV testing and regional variabilities still exist among these studies. Among the anatomic sites, oropharyngeal cancer has been shown to be caused by HPV infection, but the association of HPV with other sites is still under debate. In addition, there is a paucity of relevant studies. Here, this review narrates the association between HPV infection and HNC, compares the differences between global and Chinese studies, and then explores the importance of HPV infection in various anatomical sites. The main objective is to highlight the research on HPV-related HNC and promote relevant prevention and treatment programs.

Abstract
Although ultrafast control of the nonthermally driven ferroelectric transition of paraelectric SrTiO3 was achieved under laser excitation, the underlying mechanism and dynamics of the photoinduced phase transition remain ambiguous. Here, the determinant formation mechanism of ultrafast ferroelectricity in SrTiO3 is traced by nonadiabatic dynamics simulations. That is, the selective excitation of multiple phonons, induced by photoexcited electrons through the strong correlation between electronic excitation and lattice distortion, results in the breaking of the crystal central symmetry and the onset of ferroelectricity. The accompanying population transition between 3dz2 and 3dx2-y2 orbitals excites multiple phonon branches, including the two high-energy longitudinal optical modes, so as to drive the titanium ion away from the center of the oxygen octahedron and generate a metastable ferroelectric phase. Our findings reveal a cooperative electronic and ionic driving mechanism for the laser-induced ferroelectricity that provides new schemes for the optical control of ultrafast quantum states.

Abstract
This paper presents a state-averaged complete active space self-consistent field (SA-CASSCF) in the atomic multipole optimized energetics for biomolecular application (AMOEBA) polarizable water model, which enables rigorous simulation of non-adiabatic molecular dynamics with nonequilibrium solvation effects. The molecular orbital and configuration interaction coefficients of the solute wavefunction, and the induced dipoles on solvent atoms, are solved by minimizing the state averaged energy variationally. In particular, by formulating AMOEBA water models and the polarizable continuum model (PCM) in a unified way, the algorithms developed for computing SA-CASSCF/PCM energies, analytical gradients, and non-adiabatic couplings in our previous work can be generalized to SA-CASSCF/AMOEBA by properly substituting a specific list of variables. Implementation of this method will be discussed with the emphasis on how the calculations of different terms are partitioned between the quantum chemistry and molecular mechanics codes. We will present and discuss results that demonstrate the accuracy and performance of the implementation. Next, we will discuss results that compare three solvent models that work with SA-CASSCF, i.e., PCM, fixed-charge force fields, and the newly implemented AMOEBA. Finally, the new SA-CASSCF/AMOEBA method has been interfaced with the ab initio multiple spawning method to carry out non-adiabatic molecular dynamics simulations. This method is demonstrated by simulating the photodynamics of the model retinal protonated Schiff base molecule in water.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The incidence of osteoarthritis (OA) in menopausal women is significantly higher than in same-aged men. Investigating the role of subchondral osteoblasts in estrogen deficiency-induced OA may help elucidate the pathological mechanism, providing new insights for the diagnosis and treatment of menopausal OA. METHODS A classical ovariectomy-induced OA (OVX-OA) rat model was utilized to isolate primary articular chondrocytes and subchondral osteoblasts, which were identified and then cocultured in Transwell. The expression of chondrocyte anabolic and catabolic indicators was evaluated. The differentially expressed proteins in the conditioned medium (CM) of osteoblasts were identified by Liquid Chromatograph-Mass Spectrometer (LC-MS/MS). Normal chondrocytes were treated with osteoblast CM, and then RNA sequencing was performed on the treated chondrocytes. KEGG was used to identify significant enrichment of signaling pathways, and Simple Western was used to verify the expression of related proteins in the signaling pathways. RESULTS Coculture of OVX-OA subchondral osteoblasts with chondrocytes significantly downregulated the expression of the anabolic indicators and upregulated the expression of the catabolic indicators in chondrocytes. 1,601 proteins were identified in both normal and OVX osteoblast culture supernatants. Protein-protein interaction network analysis revealed that Sparc was one of the hub proteins. The AMPK/Foxo3a signaling pathway of chondrocytes was downregulated by OVX-OA osteoblasts CM. AICAR, the AMPK agonist, partially reversed the catabolic effect of OVX-OA osteoblasts on chondrocytes. CONCLUSIONS Sparc secreted by OVX-OA subchondral osteoblasts can downregulate the AMPK/Foxo3a signaling pathway of chondrocytes, thereby promoting chondrocyte degeneration.

Abstract
The brain responds highly variably to identical sensory inputs, but there is no consensus on the nature of this variability. We explore this question using cortex-wide optical voltage imaging and whisker stimulation in awake mice. Clustering analysis reveals that the sensory-evoked activity propagates over the cortex via distinct pathways associated with distinct behavioral states. The pathway taken by each trial is independent of the level of primary sensory-evoked activation but is partially predictable by the spatiotemporal features of the preceding cortical spontaneous activity patterns. The sensory inputs reduce trial-to-trial variability in brain activity and alter temporal autocorrelation in spatial activity pattern evolutions, suggesting non-linear interactions between evoked activities and spontaneous activities. Further, evoked activities and spontaneous activities occupy different positions in the state space, suggesting that sensory inputs can intricately interact with the internal state to generate large-scale evoked activity patterns not frequented by spontaneous brain states.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the impact of pretreatment drug resistance (PDR) on virological effect among HIV-infected patients having received antiretroviral therapy (ART) after three years. Methods: The baseline survey of PDR among HIV-infected patients was conducted in 2018, with a three-year follow up study. The clinic data and virological laboratory test variables were statistically analyzed. Results: Of the 2 433 participants, 41.6% (1 012/2 433) were aged between 18 and 34, 82.8% (2 015/2 433) were males, 46.9% (1 142/2 433) had education of high school or above, 22.4% (544/2 433) were farmers, 33.8% (823/2 433) were unmarried, 48.1% (1 169/2 433) were infected heterosexually and 41.3% (1 004/2 433) were with CRF07_BC. The prevalence of PDR was 4.5% (109/2 433). The prevalence of virological suppression failure (viral load ≥50 copies/ml) and drug resistance at three years follow up after ART was 8.1%(196/2 433) and 2.5%(60/2 433) respectively. The prevalence of virological suppression failure and drug resistance at three years follow up after ART were 18.3% (20/109) and 7.6% (176/2 324), and 4.6% (5/109) and 2.4% (55/2 324) among participants with PDR and non-PDR, respectively. The results of multivariate logistic regression model showed that illiteracy (aOR=3.26, 95%CI: 1.82-5.86), primary and junior high school education (aOR=1.54, 95%CI: 1.09-2.18), CD4+T lymphocyte count <200/μl (aOR=2.77, 95%CI: 1.75-4.37) and CD4+T lymphocyte count 200-499/μl (aOR=1.55, 95%CI: 1.10-2.18) at a three year follow up visit after ART, missed drugs in the past month (aOR=4.24, 95%CI: 2.92-6.17), and PDR (aOR=2.84, 95%CI: 1.67-4.85) were statistically significant with virological suppression failure on treatment. Conclusions: The prevalence of PDR in China at a low level currently, and the virological suppression failure rate is low after three years of ART. It is necessary to strengthen drug resistance monitoring of HIV-infected patients and pay attention to the influence of PDR on treatment effect.

Abstract
Matrix deposition plays an important role in obtaining high-quality and reliable molecular spatial location information for matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry imaging (MALDI-MSI). To control the matrix film formation, an automatic matrix spraying apparatus was developed with the introduction of a noncontact heating lamp. Compared with the unheated condition, the noncontact heating lamp suppressed the coffee-ring effect and the diffusion phenomenon of the analyte effectively by controllable matrix film formation. Meanwhile, the signal intensity was increased by 2-5 fold. To prove the ability of the matrix deposition apparatus, the apparatus combined with metabolomics analysis was used to show the spatial distribution of the substance in sprouted potato tubers. The potential biomarkers at m/z 868.5049 and m/z 852.5101 were identified as α-solanine and α-chaconine, and the synthesis pathways were further searched. To further demonstrate the quality of MALDI images including localization and spatial resolution, lipid distribution in rat brain tissue was investigated by the developed noncontact heating matrix spraying apparatus. An excellent match with distinguishable compartments of lipids in the rat brain was obtained between the H&E-stained sections and MALDI-MSI images. These results indicate that the developed noncontact heating matrix spraying apparatus is reliable and provides a low-cost, high-quality, rapid approach for MALDI-MSI.

Abstract
Light-matter interaction is one of the key means to manipulate the structural and electronic properties of materials, especially in two-dimensional (2D) layered materials, which are optically accessible due to their atomic thickness. We propose that an ultrashort laser pulse could drastically enhance the ferroelectric polarization of bilayer WTe2by our real-time time-dependent density functional theory simulations. It is noted that bilayer WTe2is a 2D sliding ferroelectric material recently discovered whose vertical polarization can be controlled by a slight horizontal displacement. We demonstrate that interlayer sliding and compression are simultaneously achieved upon illumination of linearly polarized near-infrared laser pulse, leading to an ultrafast electric polarization enhancement by ∼230% within hundreds of femtosecond. Two major contributions have been identified: (a) the piezoelectric effect due to laser-induced interlayer compression, caused by interlayer charge transfer and dipole-dipole interaction; (b) the interlayer sliding along the opposite direction of ferroelectric switching, induced by inhomogeneous excited carrier distribution and specific electron-phonon couplings. This work provides new insights on controlling ferroelectricity of layered materials, which may extend to other van der Waals bilayers and even bulk materials.

Abstract
Objective: To analyze the impact of metabolic risk factors on the epidemiological characteristics of the reactivation of inactive HBsAg carriers (IHC) and provide effective intervention measures to standardize the management of chronic hepatitis B infections. Methods: Based on the chronic hepatitis B infection cohort established in 2010 in Jiangsu province, six follow-up visits from 2012 to 2020 were conducted to analyze the characteristics and influencing factors of the hepatitis B reactivation of IHC and the impact of metabolic risk factors, including obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes and hyperglycemia. Results: From 2012 to 2020, 2 527 IHC and 17 730 person-years were observed during a median follow-up period of 7.0 person-years. Ninety-eight cases of hepatitis B reactivation, with a cumulative reaction rate, was 3.9%, and the incidence density was 5.53/1 000 person-years. Multivariate Cox proportional risk regression analysis showed that age and baseline HBV DNA were independent risk factors of HBV reactivation. Compared with the patients ≥60 years, 40-49 age group (aHR=2.16, 95%CI:1.20-3.90) and 20-29 age group (aHR=5.48, 95%CI:2.07-14.48) were significantly associated with hepatitis B reactivation. Compared with the HBV DNA negative patients at baseline, the risk of hepatitis B reactivation was higher in the group with low HBV DNA level 100-1 999 IU/ml (aHR=1.67, 95%CI:1.11-2.52). Stratification analysis results showed that compared with those without metabolic risk factors, in the ≥50 age group, patients with ≥2 metabolic risk factors showed adjusted HR of 2.73 (95%CI:1.08-6.96). Conclusions: The risk of hepatitis B being reactive is the persistent existence of IHC in communities in Jiangsu province, especially young adults, low-level HBV DNA carriers, and IHC with ≥2 metabolic risk factors. Follow-up for these IHC should be strengthened to reduce the risk of disease progression by antiviral treatment at the right time.

Abstract
Background Experimental animals are used to study physiological phenomena, pathological mechanisms, and disease prevention. The gut microbiome is known as a potential confounding factor for inconsistent data from preclinical studies. Although many gut microbiome studies have been conducted in recent decades, few have focused on gut microbiota fluctuation among representative mouse strains. Methods A range of frequently used mouse strains were selected from 34 isolation packages representing disease‐related animal (DRA), immunity defect animal (IDA), or gene‐editing animal (GEA) from the BALB/c and C57BL/6J backgrounds together with normal mice, and their microbial genomic DNA were isolated from mouse feces to sequence for the exploration of gut microbiota. Results Mouse background strain, classification, introduced source, introduced year, and reproduction type significantly affected the gut microbiota structure (p < 0.001 for all parameters), with background strain contributing the greatest influence (R2 = 0.237). In normal groups, distinct gut microbiota types existed in different mouse strains. Sixty‐four core operational taxonomic units were obtained from normal mice, and 12 belonged to Lactobacillus. Interestingly, the gut microbiota in C57BL/6J was more stable than that in BALB/c mice. Furthermore, the gut microbiota in the IDA, GEA, and DRA groups significantly differed from that in normal groups (p < 0.001 for all). Compared with the normal group, there was a significantly higher Chao1 and Shannon index (p < 0.001 for all) in the IDA, GEA, and DRA groups. Markedly changed classes occurred with Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes. The abundances of Helicobacter, Blautia, Enterobacter, Bacillus, Clostridioides, Paenibacillus, and Clostridiales all significantly decreased in the IDA, GEA, and DRA groups, whereas those of Saccharimonas, Rikenella, and Odoribacter all significantly increased.

Abstract
Surgery is the main curative treatment for gastric cancer. As surgical techniques continue to improve, the scope of radical resection and lymph node dissection has formed consensus and guidelines, so people's attention has gradually shifted to the quality of life (QOL) of patients after surgery. Postgastrectomy syndrome is a series of symptoms and signs caused by complications after gastrectomy, which can affect the quality of life of patients with gastric cancer after surgery. Gastrectomy and anastomosis are closely related to postgastrectomy syndrome. The selection of appropriate surgical methods is very important to the quality of life of patients after surgery. This article reviews the effects of gastrectomy procedures on postoperative quality of life of patients with gastric cancer and its evaluation methods.

Abstract
Homogalacturonan (HG)-type pectins are nutrient components in plants and are widely used in the food industry. The methyl-esterification pattern is a crucial structural parameter used to assess HG pectins in terms of their nutraceutical activity. To better understand the methyl-esterification pattern of natural HG pectins from different plants, we purified twenty HG pectin-rich fractions from twelve plants and classified them by their monosaccharide composition, Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) signatures, and NMR analysis. FT-IR shows that these HG pectins are all minimally esterified, with the degree of methyl-esterification (DM) being 5 to 40%. To examine their methyl-esterification pattern by enzymatic fingerprinting, we hydrolyzed the HG pectins using endo-polygalacturonase. Hydrolyzed oligomers were derivatized with 2-aminobenzamide and subjected to liquid chromatography-fluorescence-tandem mass spectrometry (HILIC-FLR-MSn). Twenty-one types of mono-/oligo-galacturonides having DP values of 1–10 were found to contain nonesterified monomers, dimers, and trimers, as well as oligomers with 1 to 6 methyl-ester groups. In these oligo-galacturonides, MSn analysis demonstrated that the number of methyl-ester groups in the continuous sequence was 2 to 5. Mono- and di-esterified oligomers had higher percentages in total methyl-esterified groups, suggesting that these are a random methyl-esterification pattern in these HG pectins. Our study analyzes the characteristics of the methyl-esterification pattern in naturally occurring plant-derived HG pectins and findings that will be useful for further studying HG structure-function relationships.

Abstract
A new generation of optogenetic tools for analyzing neural activity has been contributing to the elucidation of classical open questions in neuroscience. Specifically, voltage imaging technologies using enhanced genetically encoded voltage indicators have been increasingly used to observe the dynamics of large circuits at the mesoscale. Here, we describe how to combine cortical wide-field voltage imaging with hippocampal electrophysiology in awake, behaving mice. Furthermore, we highlight how this method can be useful for different possible investigations, using the characterization of hippocampal-neocortical interactions as a case study.
