Evaluation of the Infection Risk in Dialysis and Chronic Kidney Disease Patients Using an ATP Monitoring Assay. Ther Apher Dial 2017; 21:270-278. Abstract
The ATP monitoring assay is a useful biomarker for risk monitoring to detect infection and rejection episodes in transplant recipients. Hemodialysis patients have a higher rate of infectious mortality. Infections in hemodialysis patients are mainly caused by venous catheters, uremia, malnutrition and inflammation. However, the risk of infection episodes has not been evaluated using a lymphocyte ATP monitoring assay in hemodialysis and chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients. We measured the ATP amounts in the peripheral CD4+ cells of CKD (N = 85) and dialysis patients (N = 17) using an "Immuknow" assay kit. These CKD patients were divided, according to kidney disease stage, into G3a, G3b, G4, and G5 groups. The ATP amounts in CD4+ cells of the dialysis patients and each of the CKD groups were compared with healthy subjects. In both the dialysis and CKD patients, the ATP amounts in CD4+ cells were lower than in healthy subjects. Furthermore, there were significant differences in the ATP amounts between healthy subjects and each of the CKD-G3a, CKD-G3b, and CKD-G4 groups (P < 0.05). Patients with CKD-G3a, CKD-G3b and CKD-G4 were evaluated as being at high risk for infection according to the lymphocyte ATP monitoring assay. However, the ATP amounts in the dialysis and CKD-G5 patients did not differ from those in healthy subjects to a statistically significant extent. These results suggest that the ATP amount in the CD4+ cells of these patients with serve renal failure are influenced by dialysis treatment, uremia and/or oxidative stress.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine efficacy and safety of biweekly administration of docetaxel and carboplatin for advanced or recurrent en- dometrial and ovarian carcinomas. MATERIAL AND METHODS The recommended doses were determined in the phase I study. In the phase II feasibility study, the primary end-point was safety, and the secondary end-point was response rate and progression-free survival (PFS). RESULTS The recommended doses of docetaxel and carboplatin were determined to be 45 mg/n(2) and AUC 3.0, respectively, in phase I study. In phase II feasibility study, no treatment-related death was observed. Most non-hematotoxicity cases were mild or moderate. Grade 4 neutropenia was confirmed in 13 patients (31.0%), whereas all cases showed tolerability with 2.6 days delay of anticancer drugs administration in both groups. Response rate was 55.0% in the ovarian carcinoma group, and average PFS was 8.7 months. In the endometrial carcinoma group, response rate was 50.0% and average PFS was 32.0 months. CONCLUSION The present results showed that biweekly administration of docetaxel and carboplatin for advanced and recurrent endometrial and ovarian carcinomas results in acceptable side effects, response rate, and PFS.

Identification and functional activity of a staphylocoagulase type XI variant originating from staphylococcal food poisoning isolates. Lett Appl Microbiol 2016; 63:172-7. Abstract
UNLABELLED Staphylocoagulase, an extracellular protein secreted by Staphylococcus aureus, has been used as an epidemiological marker. At least 12 serotypes and 24 genotypes subdivided on the basis of nucleotide sequence have been reported to date. In this study, we identified a novel staphylocoagulase nucleotide sequence, coa310, from staphylococcal food poisoning isolates that had the ability to coagulate plasma, but could not be typed using the conventional method. The protein encoded by coa310 contained the six fundamental conserved domains of staphylocoagulase. The full-length nucleotide sequence of coa310 shared the highest similarity (77·5%) with that of staphylocoagulase-type (SCT) XIa. The sequence of the D1 region, which would be responsible for the determination of SCT, shared the highest similarity (91·8%) with that of SCT XIa. These results suggest that coa310 is a novel variant of SCT XI. Moreover, we demonstrated that coa310 encodes a functioning coagulase, by confirming the coagulating activity of the recombinant protein expressed from coa310. This is the first study to directly demonstrate that Coa310, a putative SCT XI, has coagulating activity. These findings may be useful for the improvement of the staphylocoagulase-typing method, including serotyping and genotyping. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY This is the first study to identify a novel variant of staphylocoagulase type XI based on its nucleotide sequence and to demonstrate coagulating activity in the variant using a recombinant protein. Elucidation of the variety of staphylocoagulases will provide suggestions for further improvement of the staphylocoagulase-typing method and contribute to our understanding of the epidemiologic characterization of Staphylococcus aureus.

Abstract
Although hypoxic conditions have been reported to affect the expression levels of various enzymes like cytochrome P450, the effect of hypoxia for UDP-glucuronosyl transferase (UGT) expression has been unclear. We evaluated the mRNA expression of UGTs (UGT1A1·1A6·1A9·2B7) in a functional liver cell-4 (FLC-4) cell line by three-dimensional culture under hypoxic conditions (37 °C, 1% O₂, 5% CO₂) fo 7 days. The mRNA expression of UGT1A1·1A6·1A9·2B7 decreased significantly after 3 days and that of UGT1A1·1A6·1A9 decreased significantly after 7 days. Hypoxic conditions affect the expression levels of UGT enzymes, thus the adjustment of dosage and interval should be considered in drug therapy that metabolized by UGT.

Abstract
PURPOSE Cervical conization is the definitive treatment for women of any age who have cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN). However, complications of the procedure have not been fully investigated in postmenopausal patients. The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate the results and complications of cervical conization performed on premenopausal and postmenopausal patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS This study recruited 405 patients who had undergone cervical laser conization. The median age was 36 years (range 20 to 75), and there were 361 (89.1%) premenopausal and 44 (10.9%) postmenopausal women. RESULTS The length of the cone removed from the postmenopausal patients was significantly longer than the length from the premenopausal patients (17.9 ± 3.9 mm vs. 15.7 ± 3.6 mm, respectively; p = 0.02). The rate of positive endocervical cone margins from the premenopausal patients was significantly higher than the rate from the postmenopausal patients (9.1% vs. 0%, respectively; p = 0.037). The rate of cervical stenosis was significantly higher in postmenopausal patients than in premenopausal patients (59.1% vs. 8.3%; respectively; p < 0.0001). There was no difference in the rates of frequency of intraoperative complications. CONCLUSIONS Although deep incision is mandatory for complete excision of CIN in postmenopausal patients, it increases the incidence of cervical stenosis. Cervical conization may be a less invasive surgical procedure for older women with CIN than hysterectomy; however, the risk of postoperative complications remains, causing a dilemma for physicians treating postmenopausal women with CIN.

Abstract
Influence of arsenic disulfide (As2S2) on human immune cells has little been investigated. Effects of As2S2 on proliferation, cytokine production, and frequencies of CD4(+) T, CD8(+) T and CD4(+)CD25(+)Foxp3(+) regulatory T cells in mitogen-activated human peripheral blood mononuclear cells were examined. Anti-proliferative effects of As2S2 on peripheral blood mononuclear cells activated by T-cell mitogen were assessed by a colorimetric assay. Cytokine concentrations in the culture medium were measured with beads-array procedures followed by flow cytometry. CD4(+) T cells, CD8(+) T cells and CD4(+)CD25(+)Foxp3(+) regulatory T cells were stained with fluorescence-labeled specific antibodies followed by flow cytometry analysis. As2S2 at 1-10μM significantly suppressed mitogen-activated proliferation of peripheral blood mononuclear cells (p<0.05). As2S2 at 10μM inhibited production of IL-6, -10, -17A, tumor necrosis factor-α, and interferon-γ from the activated peripheral blood mononuclear cells, though the effects were not statistically significant. As2S2 at 10μM significantly suppressed the frequencies of CD4(+) T and CD8(+) T cells (p<0.05), whereas significantly enhanced the frequency of CD4(+)CD25(+)Foxp3(+) regulatory T cells (p<0.05). The data suggest that As2S2 attenuates T cell-mediated immunity by not only suppressing the proliferation of T cells and cytokine release but also increasing the frequency of regulatory T cells. T cell-mediated autoimmunity contributes to bone marrow failure in myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), and thus the above As2S2 effects are beneficial for the treatment of MDS patients.

Abstract
The plasmid is a very well-known mobile genetic element that participates in the acquisition of virulence genes, such as staphylococcal enterotoxins (SEs), via horizontal transfer. SEs are emetic toxins and causative agents in staphylococcal food poisoning (SFP). We herein identified the types of plasmids harbored by seven SFP isolates and examined their production of plasmid-related SE/SEl to determine whether the new types of plasmid-related SE or SE-like (SEl) toxins (i.e. SElJ and SER) were involved in SFP. These isolates harbored pIB485-like plasmids, and all, except for one isolate, produced SElJ and SER. The amount of SER produced by each isolate accounted for the highest or second highest percentage of the total amount of SE/SEl produced. These new types of plasmid-related SE/SEls as well as classical SE may play a role in SFP. The seven isolates were classified into two SED-production types; a high SED-production type (>500 ng/ml) and no SED-production type. A nucleotide sequencing analysis revealed that three plasmids harbored by the SED-non-producing isolates had a single-base deletion in the sed gene with a resulting stop codon (from 233 amino acids of the intact SED to 154 amino acids of the mutant SED (mSED)). A real-time reverse transcription-PCR analysis showed that the mRNA of the msed gene was transcribed in the isolates. If the msed gene was translated as a protein, mSED may act as an emetic toxin instead of intact SED.

Abstract
Pressure dependence of the conductivity and thermoelectric power is measured through the Mott transition in the layer organic conductor EtMe_{3}P[Pd(dmit)_{2}]_{2}. The critical behavior of the thermoelectric effect provides a clear and objective determination of the Mott-Hubbard transition during the isothermal pressure sweep. Above the critical end point, the metal-insulator crossing, determined by the thermoelectric effect minimum value, is not found to coincide with the maximum of the derivative of the conductivity as a function of pressure. We show that the critical exponents of the Mott-Hubbard transition fall within the Ising universality class regardless of the dimensionality of the system.

Abstract
A 39-year-old woman with a six-year history of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) was admitted because of a prolonged high fever, discoid rash, and multiple lymphadenopathies. She also developed pericarditis, and was treated with intravenous methylprednisolone pulse therapy followed by prednisolone 50 mg daily and cyclosporine 100 mg daily. Meanwhile, she had a progressive headache, and a brain MRI revealed right pons infarction, although she did not have any abnormal neurological findings. An MRA revealed obvious irregular narrowing in the basilar, right vertebral and right posterior cerebral artery. There was no evidence of antiphospholipid syndrome. We concluded that the cause of the asymptomatic brain infarction was cerebral large vessel vasculitis associated with neuropsychiatric SLE. Intravenous cyclophosphamide pulse therapy was started, and two months later, we confirmed that the irregular arterial narrowing had markedly ameliorated. Cerebral large vessel vasculitis in neuropsychiatric SLE is very rare, and a marked amelioration has not been reported to date. Here, we present a rare case of cerebral large vessel vasculitis treated successfully with a clear visual presentation.

Abstract
A photonuclear-reaction-based hard x-ray spectrometer is developed to measure the number and energy spectrum of fast electrons generated by interactions between plasma and intense laser light. In this spectrometer, x-rays are converted to neutrons through photonuclear reactions, and the neutrons are counted with a bubble detector that is insensitive to x-rays. The spectrometer consists of a bundle of hard x-ray detectors that respond to different photon-energy ranges. Proof-of-principle experiment was performed on a linear accelerator facility. A quasi-monoenergetic electron bunch (Ne = 1.0 × 10(-6) C, Ee = 16 ± 0.32 MeV) was injected into a 5-mm-thick lead plate. Bremsstrahlung x-rays, which emanate from the lead plate, were measured with the spectrometer. The measured spectral shape and intensity agree fairly well with those computed with a Monte Carlo simulation code. The result shows that high-energy x-rays can be measured absolutely with a photon-counting accuracy of 50%-70% in the energy range from 2 MeV to 20 MeV with a spectral resolution (Δhν/hν) of about 15%. Quantum efficiency of this spectrometer was designed to be 10(-7), 10(-4), 10(-5), respectively, for 2-10, 11-15, and 15-25 MeV of photon energy ranges.

Abstract
An electron energy spectrometer (ESM) is one of the most fundamental diagnostics in the fast ignition experiment. It is necessary to observe the spectra down to a low energy range in order to obtain the accurate deposition efficiency toward the core. Here, we realize the suitable ESM by using a ferrite magnet with a moderate magnetic field of 0.3 T and a rectangular magnetic circuit covered with a steel plate in the inlet side.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The association between overtime and depression is unclear and very few studies have examined the association between heavy overtime work, i.e. working more than 60 h per week, and depression. AIMS To examine the association between heavy overtime work and the onset of depressive disorder among male workers. METHODS A 1-year follow-up cohort study of male workers in a manufacturing company in Japan, between 2008 and 2009. Working hours, depressive disorder, assessed by the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression (CES-D) Scale (score ≥16 points), and covariates were measured at baseline and at follow-up. Participants who had depressive disorder at baseline were excluded. RESULTS At follow-up, 1194 participants aged between 18 and 71 years were analysed. Multiple logistic regression analysis revealed that the odds ratio for the new onset of depressive disorder was 4.5 (95% CI 1.8-11.1) times higher for employees working >60 h per week than for those working ≤50 h per week, when adjusted for age, lifestyle factors, work-related characteristics and socio-demographic characteristics at baseline and working hours at follow-up. However, the correlation between working 50.1 to 60 h per week and depressive disorder was not significant. The trend test of depressive disorder among groups by working hours was significant (P < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS Heavy overtime work is a risk factor for the new onset of depressive disorder in this population of male workers. Working >60 h per week may be the cut-off to screen for high-risk groups who need preventive action against depressive disorder.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Combination regimens containing bevacizumab(BV)are regarded as one of the standard first-line chemotherapy (1stCTx) regimens in the treatment of metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC). However, some patients cannot be treated with BV because of the short interval from the palliative operation or other reasons. We present a study of some patients who were treated with add-on BV in the middle of the 1stCTx before disease progression(referred to as "midway BV" regimen hereafter), and here, we report the efficacy of the midway BV regimen as observed in our patients. RESULTS We retrospectively analyzed the data of 74 mCRC patients, who were undergoing 1stCTx treatment at our hospital from January 2010 to September 2012. We divided the patients into 3 groups, depending on when BV was introduced in their regimen: 40, 25, and 9 patients were respectively included in the "no-BV" group (patients who were treated without BV in the 1stCTx), BV group(patients treated with BV from the 1st cycle in the 1stCTx), and the midway-BV group (patients who were initially treated without BV and then received add-on BV). The response rates of patients in the no-BV, BV, and midway-BV groups were 27.5%, 44.0%, and 55.6%, respectively. The median progression-free survival (PFS) and median survival time of patients in the no-BV, BV, and midway-BV groups were, respectively, 9.7 months, 9.3 months, and 12.8 months, and 20.3 months, 22.2 months, and N. R. CONCLUSION Although few cases were analyzed and there might be many confounding factors, our study suggests that midway BV is potentially useful for patients with metastatic colorectal cancer who are not initially treated with BV in the first cycle of the 1stCTx regimen.

Abstract
In this research, we propose a novel segmentation method for image of cultured cell at a confluent state, obtained by phase-contrast microscope, based on the orientation. First, we assign to each pixel in the image the direction of an eigenvector corresponding to a smaller eigenvalue of the 2 by 2 Hessian matrix with respect to brightness. Next, we define the orientation at a certain pixel as the histograms of the direction at pixels in the surrounding regions. Then, we evaluate deviation of histograms in the individual regions by entropy, and regard the series of entropy as a multi-dimensional vector, the dimension of which corresponds with the number of regions. We suppose that the vector is assigned to the pixel of interest. Finally, we segment the image based on the multi-dimensional vector using K-means method. We investigate the efficacy of the proposed method using an actual human confluent fibroblast image acquired by phase-contrast microscopy.

Abstract
Periodontal tissue homeostasis depends on a complex cellular network that conveys cell-cell communication. Gap junctions (GJs), one of the intercellular communication systems, are found between adjacent human periodontal ligament (hPDL) cells; however, the functional GJ coupling between hPDL cells has not yet been elucidated. In this study, we investigated functional gap-junction-mediated intercellular communication in isolated primary hPDL cells. SEM images indicated that the cells were in contact with each other via dendritic processes, and also showed high anti-connexin43 (Cx43) immunoreactivity on these processes. Gap-junctional intercellular communication (GJIC) among hPDL cells was assessed by fluorescence recovery after a photobleaching (FRAP) analysis, which exhibited dye coupling between hPDL cells, and was remarkably down-regulated when the cells were treated with a GJ blocker. Additionally, we examined GJs under hypoxic stress. The fluorescence recovery and expression levels of Cx43 decreased time-dependently under the hypoxic condition. Exposure to GJ inhibitor or hypoxia increased RANKL expression, and decreased OPG expression. This study shows that GJIC is responsible for hPDL cells and that its activity is reduced under hypoxia. This is consistent with the possible role of hPDL cells in regulating the biochemical reactions in response to changes in the hypoxic environment.

Limit on neutrinoless ββ decay of 136Xe from the first phase of KamLAND-Zen and comparison with the positive claim in 76Ge. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2013; 110:062502. Abstract
We present results from the first phase of the KamLAND-Zen double-beta decay experiment, corresponding to an exposure of 89.5 kg yr of (136)Xe. We obtain a lower limit for the neutrinoless double-beta decay half-life of T(1/2)(0ν)>1.9×10(25) yr at 90% C.L. The combined results from KamLAND-Zen and EXO-200 give T(1/2)(0ν)>3.4×10(25) yr at 90% C.L., which corresponds to a Majorana neutrino mass limit of <m(ββ)> <(120-250) meV based on a representative range of available matrix element calculations. Using those calculations, this result excludes the Majorana neutrino mass range expected from the neutrinoless double-beta decay detection claim in (76)Ge, reported by a part of the Heidelberg-Moscow Collaboration, at more than 97.5% C.L.

Novel Pauli-paramagnetic quantum phase in a Mott insulator. Nat Commun 2013; 3:1090. Abstract
In Mott insulators, the strong electron-electron Coulomb repulsion localizes electrons. In dimensions greater than one, their spins are usually ordered antiferromagnetically at low temperatures. Geometrical frustrations can destroy this long-range order, leading to exotic quantum spin liquid states. However, their magnetic ground states have been a long-standing mystery. Here we show that a quantum spin liquid state in the organic Mott insulator EtMe(3)Sb[Pd(dmit)(2)](2) (where Et is C(2)H(5)-, Me is CH(3)-, and dmit is 1,3-dithiole-2-thione-4,5-dithiolate) with two-dimensional triangular lattice has Pauli-paramagnetic-like low-energy excitations, which are a hallmark of itinerant fermions. Our torque magnetometry down to low temperatures (30 mK) up to high fields (32 T) reveals distinct residual paramagnetic susceptibility comparable to that in a half-filled two-dimensional metal, demonstrating the magnetically gapless nature of the ground state. Moreover, our results are robust against deuteration, pointing toward the emergence of an extended 'quantum critical phase', in which low-energy spin excitations behave as in paramagnetic metals with Fermi surface, despite the frozen charge degree of freedom.

Female pseudohermaphroditism associated with maternal steroid cell tumor, not otherwise specified of the ovary: a case report and literature review. CLIN EXP OBSTET GYN 2013; 40:591-595. Abstract
Maternal virilization in pregnancy with or without fetal female pseudohermaphroditism has several etiologies. Of these, pregnancy luteoma is the most common cause of maternal virilization during pregnancy, and approximately 20 cases have been reported in recent years. Moreover, four cases of pregnancy luteomas with female pseudohermaphroditism have been reported. However, the extremely rare steroid cell tumor, not otherwise specified (NOS), has been reported only once as a cause for maternal virilization. Herein, the authors report the first case of maternal virilization with female pseudohermaphroditism associated with steroid cell tumor-NOS along with the clinical course, pathological features, and a review of the literature.

Abstract
We investigated the effects of a Chinese herbal medicine, Gosha-jinki-gan (GJG), on the regulation of insulin levels in rats fed a sucrose-rich diet (SRD). Normal Wistar rats in the SRD group were fed an SRD for 4 weeks. Increased dietary sucrose did not alter plasma glucose levels but it increased plasma insulin levels at 2 and 4 weeks in the SRD-fed rats relative to control rats that were fed standard chow. GJG treatment significantly suppressed the SRD-induced elevation in plasma insulin levels. These results suggest that GJG improves hyperinsulinemia caused by an SRD.

Quasiparticles and Fermi liquid behaviour in an organic metal. Nat Commun 2012; 3:1089. Abstract
Many organic metals display exotic properties such as superconductivity, spin-charge separation and so on and have been described as quasi-one-dimensional Luttinger liquids. However, a genuine Fermi liquid behaviour with quasiparticles and Fermi surfaces have not been reported to date for any organic metal. Here, we report the experimental Fermi surface and band structure of an organic metal (BEDT-TTF)(3)Br(pBIB) obtained using angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy, and show its consistency with first-principles band structure calculations. Our results reveal a quasiparticle renormalization at low energy scales (effective mass m*=1.9 m(e)) and ω(2) dependence of the imaginary part of the self energy, limited by a kink at ~50 meV arising from coupling to molecular vibrations. The study unambiguously proves that (BEDT-TTF)(3)Br(pBIB) is a quasi-2D organic Fermi liquid with a Fermi surface consistent with Shubnikov-de Haas results.
