Abstract
Growing interest in molten salts as effective high-temperature heat-transfer fluids for sustainable energy systems drives a critical need to fundamentally understand the interactions between metals and molten salts. This work utilizes the multimodal microscopy methods of synchrotron X-ray nanotomography and electron microscopy to investigate the 3D morphological and chemical evolution of two-model systems, pure nickel metal and Ni-20Cr binary alloy, in a representative molten salt (KCl-MgCl2 50-50 mol %, 800 °C). In both systems, unexpected shell-like structures formed because of the presence of more noble tungsten, suggesting a potential route of using Ni-W alloys for enhanced molten-salt corrosion resistance. The binary alloy Ni-20Cr developed a bicontinuous porous structure, reassembling functional porous metals manufactured by dealloying. This work elucidates better mechanistic understanding of corrosion in molten salts, which can contribute to the design of more reliable alloys for molten salt applications including next-generation nuclear and solar power plants and opens the possibility of using molten salts to fabricate functional porous materials.

Abstract
The development of technologies for nuclear reactors based on molten salts has seen a big resurgence. The success of thermodynamic models for these hinges in part on our ability to predict at the atomistic level the behavior of pure salts and their mixtures under a range of conditions. In this letter, we present high-energy X-ray scattering experiments and molecular dynamics simulations that describe the molten structure of mixtures of MgCl2 and KCl. As one would expect, KCl is a prototypical salt in which structure is governed by simple charge alternation. In contrast, MgCl2 and its mixtures with KCl display more complex correlations including intermediate-range order and the formation of Cl--decorated Mg2+ chains. A thorough computational analysis suggests that intermediate-range order beyond charge alternation may be traced to correlations between these chains. An analysis of the coordination structure for Mg2+ ions paints a more complex picture than previously understood, with multiple accessible states of distinct geometries.

Abstract
Porous liquids, as a newly emerging type of porous material, have great potential in gas separation and storage. However, the examples and synthetic strategies reported so far likely represent only the tip of the iceberg due to the great difficulty and challenge in engineering permanent porosity in liquid matrices. Here, by taking advantage of the hydrogen bonding interaction between the alkane chains of branched ionic liquids and the Brønsted sites in H-form zeolites, as well as the mechanical bond of the long alkyl chain of the cation penetrated into the zeolite channel at the interface, the H-form zeolites can be uniformly stabilized in branched ionic liquids to form porous liquid zeolites, which not only significantly improve their gas sorption performance, but also change the gas sorption-desorption behavior because of the preserved permanent porosity. Furthermore, such a facile synthetic strategy can be extended to fabricate other types of H-form zeolite-based porous liquids by taking advantage of the tunability of the counter-anion (e.g., NTf2-, BF4-, EtSO4-, etc.) in branched ionic liquids, thus opening up new opportunities for porous liquids for specific applications in energy and environment.

Abstract
Ionic covalent organic frameworks make up an emerging class of functional materials in which the included ionic interfaces induce strong and attractive interactions with ionic species of the opposite charge. In this work, the strong and selective binding forces between the confined diiminoguanidinium groups in the framework and tetrahedral oxoanions have led to unparalleled effectiveness in the removal of the toxic chromium(VI) pollutant from aqueous solutions. The new functional framework can take up from 90 to 200 mg/g of chromium(VI), depending on the solution pH, and is capable of decreasing the chromium(VI) concentration in water from 1 ppm to 10 ppb within minutes (an order of magnitude below the current U.S. Environmental Protection Agency maximum contaminant level of 100 ppb), demonstrating superior properties among known ion exchange materials and natural sorbents.

Abstract
Sulfonated tire-derived carbons have been demonstrated to be high value-added carbon products of tire recycling in several energy storage system applications including lithium, sodium, potassium ion batteries and supercapacitors. In this communication, we compared different temperature pyrolyzed sulfonated tire-derived carbons with commercial graphite and unmodified/non-functionalized tire-derived carbon by studying the surface chemistry and properties, vibrational spectroscopy of the molecular structure, chemical bonding such as C-H bonding, and intermolecular interactions of the carbon materials. The nitrogen adsorption-desorption studies revealed the tailored micro and meso pore size distribution of the carbon during the sulfonation process. XPS and neutron vibrational spectra showed that the sulfonation of the initial raw tire powders could remove the aliphatic hydrogen containing groups ([double bond splayed left]CH2 and -CH3 groups) and reduce the number of heteroatoms that connect to carbon. The absence of these functional groups could effectively improve the first cycle efficiency of the material in rechargeable batteries. Meanwhile, the introduced -SO3H functional group helped in producing terminal H at the edge of the sp2 bonded graphite-like layers. This study reveals the influence of the sulfonation process on the recovered hard carbon from used tires and provides a pathway to develop and improve advanced energy storage materials.

Abstract
The design and synthesis of metal-free heterogeneous catalysts for efficient hydrogenation remains a great challenge. Here we report a novel approach to create conjugated nanoporous polymers with efficient hydrogenation activities toward unsaturated ketones by leveraging the innate steric encumbrance. The steric bulk of the framework as well as the local sterics of the Lewis basic sites within the polymeric skeleton result in the generation of the putative catalyst. This approach opens up new possibilities for the development of innovative metal-free heterogeneous catalysts.

Abstract
Porous materials have already manifested their unique properties in a number of fields. Generally, all porous materials are in a solid state other than liquid, in which molecules are closely packed without porosity. "Porous" and "liquid" seem like antonyms. Herein, we report a new class of Type 3 porous liquids based on rational coupling of microporous framework nanoparticles as porous hosts with a bulky ionic liquid as the fluid media. Positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) and CO2 adsorption measurements confirm the successful engineering of permanent porosity into these liquids. Compared to common porous solid materials, as-synthesized porous liquids exhibited pronounced hysteresis loops in the CO2 sorption isotherms even at ambient conditions (298 K, 1 bar). The unique features of these novel porous liquids could bring new opportunities in many fields including gas separation and storage, air separation and regeneration, gas transport, and permanent gas storage at ambient conditions.

Abstract
Polymer membranes with the capability to process a massive volume of gas are especially attractive for practical applications of gas separation. Although much effort has been devoted to develop novel polymer membranes with increased selectivity, the overall gas-separation performance and lifetime of membrane are still negatively affected by the weak mechanical performance, low plasticization resistance and poor physical aging tolerance. Recently, elastic polymer membranes with tunable mechanical properties have been attracting significant attentions due to their tremendous potential applications. Herein, we report a series of urethane-rich PDMS-based polymer networks (U-PDMS-NW) with improved mechanical performance for gas separation. The cross-link density of U-PDMS-NWs is tailored by varying the molecular weight (Mn) of PDMS. The U-PDMS-NWs show up to 400% elongation and tunable Young's modulus (1.3-122.2 MPa), ultimate tensile strength (1.1-14.3 MPa), and toughness (0.7-24.9 MJ/m3). All of the U-PDMS-NWs exhibit salient gas-separation performance with excellent thermal resistance and aging tolerance, high gas permeability (>100 Barrer), and tunable gas selectivity (up to α[PCO2/PN2] ≈ 41 and α[PCO2/PCH4] ≈ 16). With well-controlled mechanical properties and gas-separation performance, these U-PDMS-NW can be used as a polymer-membrane platform not only for gas separation but also for other applications such as microfluidic channels and stretchable electronic devices.

Abstract
Ordered mesoporous carbons (OMCs) have demonstrated great potential in catalysis, and as supercapacitors and adsorbents. Since the introduction of the organic–organic self-assembly approach in 2004/2005 until now, the direct synthesis of OMCs is still limited to the wet processing of phenol-formaldehyde polycondensation, which involves soluble toxic precursors, and acid or alkali catalysts, and requires multiple synthesis steps, thus restricting the widespread application of OMCs. Herein, we report a simple, general, scalable and sustainable solid-state synthesis of OMCs and nickel OMCs with uniform and tunable mesopores (∼4–10 nm), large pore volumes (up to 0.96 cm3 g−1) and high-surface areas exceeding 1,000 m2 g−1, based on a mechanochemical assembly between polyphenol-metal complexes and triblock co-polymers. Nickel nanoparticles (∼5.40 nm) confined in the cylindrical nanochannels show great thermal stability at 600 °C. Moreover, the nickel OMCs offer exceptional activity in the hydrogenation of bulky molecules (∼2 nm). Ordered mesoporous carbons have shown promise in a range of applications, but sustainable methods to achieve their large scale production are lacking. Here, Dai and coworkers produce OMCs via the mechanochemical assembly of non-toxic polyphenol-metal complexes and triblock copolymers, followed by pyrolysis.
