Cold-nuclear-matter effects on heavy-quark production at forward and backward rapidity in d + Au collisions at √sNN = 200 GeV. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2014; 112:252301. Abstract
The PHENIX experiment has measured open heavy-flavor production via semileptonic decay over the transverse momentum range 1 < p(T) < 6 GeV/c at forward and backward rapidity (1.4 < |y| < 2.0) in d+Au and p + p collisions at √sNN = 200 GeV. In central d+Au collisions, relative to the yield in p + p collisions scaled by the number of binary nucleon-nucleon collisions, a suppression is observed at forward rapidity (in the d-going direction) and an enhancement at backward rapidity (in the Au-going direction). Predictions using nuclear-modified-parton-distribution functions, even with additional nuclear-p(T) broadening, cannot simultaneously reproduce the data at both rapidity ranges, which implies that these models are incomplete and suggests the possible importance of final-state interactions in the asymmetric d + Au collision system. These results can be used to probe cold-nuclear-matter effects, which may significantly affect heavy-quark production, in addition to helping constrain the magnitude of charmonia-breakup effects in nuclear matter.

Abstract
Charged-pion-interferometry measurements were made with respect to the second- and third-order event plane for Au+Au collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=200 GeV. A strong azimuthal-angle dependence of the extracted Gaussian-source radii was observed with respect to both the second- and third-order event planes. The results for the second-order dependence indicate that the initial eccentricity is reduced during the medium evolution, which is consistent with previous results. In contrast, the results for the third-order dependence indicate that the initial triangular shape is significantly reduced and potentially reversed by the end of the medium evolution, and that the third-order oscillations are largely dominated by the dynamical effects from triangular flow.

Abstract
Biofilms, such as dental plaque, are aggregates of microorganisms attached to a surface. Thus, visualization of biofilms together with their attached substrata is important in order to understand details of the interaction between them. However, so far there is limited availability of such techniques. Here, non-invasive visualization of biofilm formation with its attached substratum by applying the previously reported technique of continuous-optimizing confocal reflection microscopy (COCRM) is reported. The process of development of oral biofilm together with its substratum was sequentially visualized with COCRM. This study describes a convenient method for visualizing biofilm and its attached surface.

Abstract
The PHENIX collaboration at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) reports measurements of azimuthal dihadron correlations near midrapidity in d+Au collisions at √(s(NN))=200 GeV. These measurements complement recent analyses by experiments at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) involving central p+Pb collisions at √(s(NN))=5.02 TeV, which have indicated strong anisotropic long-range correlations in angular distributions of hadron pairs. The origin of these anisotropies is currently unknown. Various competing explanations include parton saturation and hydrodynamic flow. We observe qualitatively similar, but larger, anisotropies in d+Au collisions at RHIC compared to those seen in p+Pb collisions at the LHC. The larger extracted v2 values in d+Au are consistent with expectations from hydrodynamic calculations owing to the larger expected initial-state eccentricity compared with that from p+Pb collisions. When both are divided by an estimate of the initial-state eccentricity the scaled anisotropies follow a common trend with multiplicity that may extend to heavy ion data at RHIC and the LHC, where the anisotropies are widely thought to arise from hydrodynamic flow.

Abstract
We present results for three charmonia states (ψ', χc, and J/ψ) in d+Au collisions at |y|<0.35 and sqrt[s(NN)]=200 GeV. We find that the modification of the ψ' yield relative to that of the J/ψ scales approximately with charged particle multiplicity at midrapidity across p+A, d+Au, and A+A results from the Super Proton Synchrotron and the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. In large-impact-parameter collisions we observe a similar suppression for the ψ' and J/ψ, while in small-impact-parameter collisions the more weakly bound ψ' is more strongly suppressed. Owing to the short time spent traversing the Au nucleus, the larger ψ' suppression in central events is not explained by an increase of the nuclear absorption owing to meson formation time effects.

Abstract
Objectives: 1) Compare electroneuronography (ENoG) values in patients with facial palsy using two different methods, the midline method that records compound muscle action potentials (CMAPs) from the orbicularis oris muscle (the standard muscle for facial ENoG) and five electroneurogram recordings that records five CMAPs from five different facial muscles. 2) Reveal whether the ENoG value obtained with the midline method reflects entire facial nerve degeneration. Methods: Forty patients with facial palsy were enrolled. CMAPs were recorded using the midline method, in which the anode was placed on the mental protuberance and the cathode was placed on the philtrum. Additionally, five electroneurogram recordings were obtained by placing the anode on the skin of the parietal region and five cathodes on the skin over five facial muscles (frontalis, orbicularis oculi, nasalis, orbicularis oris, and depressor anguli oris muscles). ENoG values recorded using the two methods were compared. Results: The ENoG values of the five facial muscles did not differ from those obtained using the midline method. The total ENoG value calculated by summing five CMAPs from five facial muscles, which is considered to reflect total facial nerve degeneration, was not significantly different from that using midline methods; moreover, a strong positive correlation coefficient (r = 0.87) was found between them. Conclusions: The midline ENoG method that records CMAP from the orbicularis oris muscle reflects entire facial nerve degeneration. The ENoG value calculated from the orbicularis oris muscle might be suitable to evaluate the total prognosis of facial palsy.

Abstract
Objectives: 1) Compare Varicella-zoster virus (VZV)-specific cell-mediated immunity (CMI) in Hunt syndrome to Bell’s palsy using IFN enzyme-linked immunospot (ELISPOT). 2) Examine the role of VZV-specific CMI for VZV reactivation in the facial nerve in Hunt syndrome. Methods: This prospective study was conducted in our tertiary referral hospital between 2010 and 2012. Six Hunt syndrome and 28 Bell’s palsy patients were enrolled. Mononuclear cells were isolated from whole blood and incubated with VZV antigen in culture plates for 40 h. Anti IFN antibody was added and the ELISPOT system counted immunostained spots indicating VZV-specific CMI. Numbers of spots and the relationship between the spots and days from the onset of palsy were compared between Hunt syndrome and Bell’s palsy patients. Results: No difference in the number of spots was observed between Hunt syndrome and Bell’s palsy. However, Hunt syndrome showed a strong positive relationship between numbers of spots and days from the onset of palsy (r = 0.87). In the early days, spot numbers in Hunt syndrome were much lower, indicating low VZV-specific CMI. In contrast, Bell’s palsy showed no such relationship (r = -0.24). Conclusions: This study indicates that low CMI to VZV may play a role in VZV reactivation in the facial nerve. VZV vaccination may promote VZV-specific CMI, leading to prevention of Hunt syndrome.

Abstract
The jet fragmentation function is measured with direct photon-hadron correlations in p+p and Au+Au collisions at √[s(NN)]=200 GeV. The p(T) of the photon is an excellent approximation to the initial p(T) of the jet and the ratio z(T)=p(T)(h)/p(T)(γ) is used as a proxy for the jet fragmentation function. A statistical subtraction is used to extract the direct photon-hadron yields in Au+Au collisions while a photon isolation cut is applied in p+p. I(AA), the ratio of hadron yield opposite the photon in Au+Au to that in p+p, indicates modification of the jet fragmentation function. Suppression, most likely due to energy loss in the medium, is seen at high z(T). The associated hadron yield at low z(T) is enhanced at large angles. Such a trend is expected from redistribution of the lost energy into increased production of low-momentum particles.

Abstract
CONCLUSION The midline electroneurography (ENoG) method might reflect total facial nerve degeneration. OBJECTIVE We compared ENoG values in patients with facial palsy using two different methods, the midline method and five electroneurogram recordings, to reveal whether the ENoG value obtained with the midline method reflects total facial nerve degeneration. METHODS Forty patients with facial palsy were enrolled. Compound muscle action potentials (CMAPs) were recorded using the midline method, in which the anode was placed on the mental protuberance and the cathode was placed on the philtrum. RESULTS The ENoG values of the five facial muscles did not differ from those obtained using the midline method. The total ENoG value calculated by summing five CMAPs from five facial muscles, which is considered to reflect total facial nerve degeneration, was not significantly different from that using midline methods; moreover, a strong positive correlation coefficient (r = 0.87) was found between them.

Abstract
The PHENIX experiment has measured electrons and positrons at midrapidity from the decays of hadrons containing charm and bottom quarks produced in d+Au and p+p collisions at sqrt[S(NN)]=200 GeV in the transverse-momentum range 0.85 ≤ p(T)(e) ≤ 8.5 GeV/c. In central d+Au collisions, the nuclear modification factor R(dA) at 1.5<p(T)<5 GeV/c displays evidence of enhancement of these electrons, relative to those produced in p+p collisions, and shows that the mass-dependent Cronin enhancement observed at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider extends to the heavy D meson family. A comparison with the neutral-pion data suggests that the difference in cold-nuclear-matter effects on light- and heavy-flavor mesons could contribute to the observed differences between the π(0) and heavy-flavor-electron nuclear modification factors R(AA).

Evolution of π(0) suppression in Au+Au collisions from √(s(NN))=39 to 200 GeV. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2012; 109:152301. Abstract
Neutral-pion π(0) spectra were measured at midrapidity (|y|<0.35) in Au+Au collisions at √(s(NN))=39 and 62.4 GeV and compared with earlier measurements at 200 GeV in a transverse-momentum range of 1<p(T)<10 GeV/c. The high-p(T) tail is well described by a power law in all cases, and the powers decrease significantly with decreasing center-of-mass energy. The change of powers is very similar to that observed in the corresponding spectra for p+p collisions. The nuclear modification factors (R(AA)) show significant suppression, with a distinct energy, centrality, and p(T) dependence. Above p(T)=7 GeV/c, R(AA) is similar for √(s(NN))=62.4 and 200 GeV at all centralities. Perturbative-quantum-chromodynamics calculations that describe R(AA) well at 200 GeV fail to describe the 39 GeV data, raising the possibility that, for the same p(T) region, the relative importance of initial-state effects and soft processes increases at lower energies. The p(T) range where π(0) spectra in central Au+Au collisions have the same power as in p+p collisions is ≈5 and 7 GeV/c for √(s(NN))=200 and 62.4 GeV, respectively. For the √(s(NN))=39 GeV data, it is not clear whether such a region is reached, and the x(T) dependence of the x(T)-scaling power-law exponent is very different from that observed in the √(s(NN))=62 and 200 GeV data, providing further evidence that initial-state effects and soft processes mask the in-medium suppression of hard-scattered partons to higher p(T) as the collision energy decreases.

Abstract
We report the measurement of direct photons at midrapidity in Au+Au collisions at √(s(NN))=200 GeV. The direct photon signal was extracted for the transverse momentum range of 4 GeV/c<p(T)<22 GeV/c, using a statistical method to subtract decay photons from the inclusive photon sample. The direct photon nuclear modification factor R(AA) was calculated as a function of p(T) for different Au+Au collision centralities using the measured p+p direct photon spectrum and compared to theoretical predictions. R(AA) was found to be consistent with unity for all centralities over the entire measured p(T) range. Theoretical models that account for modifications of initial direct photon production due to modified parton distribution functions in Au and the different isospin composition of the nuclei predict a modest change of R(AA) from unity. They are consistent with the data. Models with compensating effects of the quark-gluon plasma on high-energy photons, such as suppression of jet-fragmentation photons and induced-photon bremsstrahlung from partons traversing the medium, are also consistent with this measurement.

Abstract
The second Fourier component v(2) of the azimuthal anisotropy with respect to the reaction plane is measured for direct photons at midrapidity and transverse momentum (p(T)) of 1-12 GeV/c in Au + Au collisions at √s(NN)] = 200 GeV. Previous measurements of this quantity for hadrons with p(T) < 6 GeV/c indicate that the medium behaves like a nearly perfect fluid, while for p(T) > 6 GeV/c a reduced anisotropy is interpreted in terms of a path-length dependence for parton energy loss. In this measurement with the PHENIX detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider we find that for p(T) > 4 GeV/c the anisotropy for direct photons is consistent with zero, which is as expected if the dominant source of direct photons is initial hard scattering. However, in the p(T) < 4 GeV/c region dominated by thermal photons, we find a substantial direct-photon v(2) comparable to that of hadrons, whereas model calculations for thermal photons in this kinematic region underpredict the observed v(2).

Abstract
Objective: 1) Describe the first case of inoperative squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) in the skull base recurring after surgery, conventional radiotherapy, and chemotherapy, which was treated using 2-stage boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT). 2) Determine the effectiveness of BNCT for head and neck cancer. Method: We present a case of inoperative recurrent SCC in the right temporal bone involving the occipital condyle. The patient underwent BNCT twice in 1 month in 2007 at Research Reactor No. 4 of the Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute to ensure neutron capture in the deep lesion. Results: An epithermal neutron beam was used as the neutron source. The total estimated radiation dose of the BNCT to the tumor beneath the skin, at the deepest point of the tumor, and in the skin around the right auricle was 41.8, 36.9, and 15.8 Gy-Eq, respectively. After the BNCT, the tumor became necrotic and shrank immediately and disappeared 6 months after the first BNCT. Radiological studies performed 5 years after the first BNCT showed no evidence of residual or recurrent tumors. Conclusion: Total resection of SCC deeply invading the skull base is difficult. Surgical complications can leave patients in critical condition. Two-stage BNCT might be an effective treatment for patients with SCC deep in the skull base.

Abstract
Objective: 1) Discuss the effects of ventilation tube placement on postoperative mastoid growth in children with otitis media with effusion (OME). 2) Show an incidence of postoperative complication, for example, spontaneous extrusion, permanent tympanic membrane perforation. Method: In total, 177 tubes were inserted in 148 ears in 81 children with OME with a mean age of 5.5 years at our hospital from 2001 to 2009. Long-term tubes were used: The T-Tube (Goode) in 87 cases or the Type II tube (Paparella) in 90 cases. Results: The tubes fell out spontaneously in 46%: 61% in the T-Tube group and 32% in the Type II tube group. Postoperative permanent tympanic membrane perforation occurred in 10%. No relationship was observed between the incidence of tympanic membrane perforation and tube type or duration of tube insertion. Postoperative mastoid growth compared to preoperative condition estimated from X-rays was 42%, 55%, 59%, and 65% at 1, 2, 3, and 4 years after surgery, respectively. Retaining the tube in place for more than 3 years was more efficient than doing so for 1 year in terms of mastoid growth statistically. Conclusion: These results indicate that the mastoid air cells grow favorably in children with OME after ventilation tube insertion. The ventilation tube should be removed from the tympanic membrane 3 years or more after insertion from the viewpoint of the mastoid cells growth.

Abstract
Flow coefficients ν(n) for n=2, 3, 4, characterizing the anisotropic collective flow in Au+Au collisions at √s(NN)=200 GeV, are measured relative to event planes Ψ(n), determined at large rapidity. We report ν(n) as a function of transverse momentum and collision centrality, and study the correlations among the event planes of different order n. The ν(n) are well described by hydrodynamic models which employ a Glauber Monte Carlo initial state geometry with fluctuations, providing additional constraining power on the interplay between initial conditions and the effects of viscosity as the system evolves. This new constraint can serve to improve the precision of the extracted shear viscosity to entropy density ratio η/s.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We previously built a pollen challenge test unit (allergen challenge chamber: ACC) to collect objective data about Japanese cedar pollinosis. In this study, we investigated adequate conditions for pollen challenge using the ACC. METHODS The study consisted of two parts. The first part was conducted in November, which is not in pollen season. Subjects were exposed to Japanese cedar pollen at a concentration of 50,000 grains/m3 in the chamber for 120 min each day over the course of three consecutive days. The second part was conducted in April, which is just after pollen season. Subjects were exposed to Japanese cedar pollen at the same concentration (50,000 grains/m3) in the chamber for 90 min on a single day. Subjects recorded nasal and ocular symptoms before challenge and every 15 min after challenge initiation. The minimum cross-sectional area in the nasal cavity was measured using acoustic rhinometry before and after challenge as an indicator of nasal obstruction. Inflammatory markers in nasal lavage fluid and serum were also measured before and after challenge. RESULTS Nasal and ocular symptoms were significantly exacerbated after challenge on all days of the single and 3-consecutive-day challenge tests, particularly on the third day of the consecutive challenge test. Nasal and ocular symptoms were also quickly induced with challenge immediately after the end of pollen season. No significant changes in inflammatory markers were seen. CONCLUSIONS Care is needed with regard to pollen challenge conditions in the ACC, including timing of the challenge, to induce pollinosis symptoms that accurately reflect chronic inflammation.

Abstract
Back-to-back hadron pair yields in d+Au and p+p collisions at √s(NN)=200 GeV were measured with the PHENIX detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. Rapidity separated hadron pairs were detected with the trigger hadron at pseudorapidity |η|<0.35 and the associated hadron at forward rapidity (deuteron direction, 3.0<η<3.8). Pairs were also detected with both hadrons measured at forward rapidity; in this case, the yield of back-to-back hadron pairs in d+Au collisions with small impact parameters is observed to be suppressed by a factor of 10 relative to p+p collisions. The kinematics of these pairs is expected to probe partons in the Au nucleus with a low fraction x of the nucleon momenta, where the gluon densities rise sharply. The observed suppression as a function of nuclear thickness, p(T), and η points to cold nuclear matter effects arising at high parton densities.

Abstract
We present measurements of J/ψ yields in d+Au collisions at sqrt[s(NN)]=200 GeV recorded by the PHENIX experiment and compare them with yields in p+p collisions at the same energy per nucleon-nucleon collision. The measurements cover a large kinematic range in J/ψ rapidity (-2.2<y<2.4) with high statistical precision and are compared with two theoretical models: one with nuclear shadowing combined with final state breakup and one with coherent gluon saturation effects. In order to remove model dependent systematic uncertainties we also compare the data to a simple geometric model. The forward rapidity data are inconsistent with nuclear modifications that are linear or exponential in the density weighted longitudinal thickness, such as those from the final state breakup of the bound state.

Abstract
Objective: We compared electroneurography (ENoG) performed in patients with facial palsy using the new midline method and standard method in terms of the relationship between the ENoG value and clinical course. We also established a new criterion with the midline method for predicting prognosis in facial palsy using the ENoG value. Method: ENoG was performed using the midline method, in which the recording electrodes were placed on the midline of the face, and the standard method, which has been used universally. The relationship between the ENoG values and the period to full recovery from the facial palsy was compared. Results: Sixty-four patients with facial palsy were enrolled. The midline method had a stronger negative correlation in the relationship between the ENoG value and period to full recovery from palsy than the standard method. We also proposed a new ENoG value-based criterion for prognostic diagnosis using the midline method: 1) ENoG value of > 60% predicts complete recovery from the palsy within 2 months; 2) ENoG value of > 10% and < 60% predicts recovery from the palsy within 6 months; and 3) ENoG value of <10% forecasts 50% of patients cannot reach complete recovery. Conclusion: The novel midline ENoG method we proposed here has advantages over the standard method in terms of ease of electrode setting, and the ENoG value may be a useful prognostic factor.

Abstract
The thoracoscopic surgery for patient with pneumothorax has been considered to be safe and easy. In recent years, there is a growing number of secondary pneumothorax due to advanced pulmonary emphysema in elderly patients. To confirm the existence of adhesion and the site of air leakage are important prior to surgery. In our institution, thoracography was performed before surgery in 9 cases of emphysema and secondary pneumothorax over 60 years old patients. The mean age was 72.2 years old and all patients were male. Air leakage and its site could be identified in 6 cases by thoracography. In the remaining 3 cases, adhesion sites were identified. There were no complications in all cases. The operation time was 117 minutes, and blood loss was 9.9 ml in average. The mean postoperative drainage period was 1.6 days and total hospital stay was 5.9 days. We conclude that the thoracoscopic surgery can be performed more safely by obtaining information of thoracic cavity using thoracography before surgery.

Cross section and parity-violating spin asymmetries of W± boson production in polarized p + p collisions at sqrt[s] = 500 GeV. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2011; 106:062001. [PMID: 21405459 DOI: 10.1103/physrevlett.106.062001] [Citation(s) in RCA: 5] [Impact Index Per Article: 0.4] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 09/03/2010] [Indexed: 05/30/2023]
Abstract
Large parity-violating longitudinal single-spin asymmetries A(L)(e+) = -0.86(-0.14) (+0.30) and A(L)(e-) = 0.88(-0.71) (+0.12) are observed for inclusive high transverse momentum electrons and positrons in polarized p+p collisions at a center-of-mass energy of sqrt[s] = 500 GeV with the PHENIX detector at RHIC. These e± come mainly from the decay of W± and Z0 bosons, and their asymmetries directly demonstrate parity violation in the couplings of the W± to the light quarks. The observed electron and positron yields were used to estimate W± boson production cross sections for the e± channels of σ(pp → W+ X) × BR(W+ → e+ ν(e)) = 144.1 ± 21.2(stat)(-10.3) (+3.4) (syst) ± 21.6(norm) pb, and σ(pp → W- X) × BR(W- → e- ν[over ¯](e)) = 31.7 ± 12.1(stat)(-8.2) (+10.1) (syst) ± 4.8(norm) pb.

Azimuthal anisotropy of π⁰ production in Au+Au collisions at sqrt((s)NN)=200 GeV: path-length dependence of jet quenching and the role of initial geometry. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2010; 105:142301. Abstract
We have measured the azimuthal anisotropy of π⁰ production for 1<p(T)<18 GeV/c for Au+Au collisions at sqrt((s)NN)=200 GeV. The observed anisotropy shows a gradual decrease for 3≲p(T)≲7-10 GeV/c, but remains positive beyond 10 GeV/c. The magnitude of this anisotropy is underpredicted, up to at least ∼10 GeV/c, by current perturbative QCD (PQCD) energy-loss model calculations. An estimate of the increase in anisotropy expected from initial-geometry modification due to gluon saturation effects and fluctuations is insufficient to account for this discrepancy. Calculations that implement a path-length dependence steeper than what is implied by current PQCD energy-loss models show reasonable agreement with the data.
