Abstract
INTRODUCTION The present study was conducted to assess the association between smoking, dietary intake of antioxidants and plasma indices of oxidative stress and antioxidant defences in male smokers (cigarette and bidi smokers). METHODS The study sample consisted of 100 healthy men, including 50 non-smokers and 50 smokers, who were subclassified into 25 cigarette smokers and 25 bidi smokers, aged 18-55 years. Erythrocyte superoxide dismutase and plasma ascorbic acid were measured as antioxidants and erythrocyte malondialdehyde as an oxidative stress index, by colorimetric methods. RESULTS Smokers ate less fruits and vegetables than non-smokers, leading to them having a lower antioxidant level. Erythrocyte superoxide dismutase was significantly lower in cigarette smokers (0.193 U/mgP, p-value is less than 0.05) and bidi smokers (0.169 U/mgP, p-value is less than 0.001) as compared to non-smokers (0.231 U/mgP). Plasma ascorbic acid was also significantly lower in cigarette smokers (1.45 mg/100 ml, p-value is less than 0.05) as well as in bidi smokers (1.38 mg/100 ml, p-value is less than 0.001) as compared to non-smokers (1.73 mg/100 ml). There was a significant increase in erythrocyte malondialdehyde concentration levels in cigarette smokers (171.47 micromol/gHb, p-value is less than 0.05) as well as in bidi smokers (231.04 micromol/gHb, p-value is less than 0.001) as compared to non-smokers (127.30 micromol/gHb). CONCLUSION These results provide enough evidence of increased oxidative stress and a compromised antioxidant defence system in smokers, and they are more profound in bidi smokers than in those smoking cigarettes. This study also revealed that the diet and nutrient intake of smokers are different from that of non-smokers.

Abstract
The aim of the paper was to develop satranidazole-containing mucoadhesive gel for the treatment of periodontitis. Different mucoadhesive gels were prepared, using various gelling agents like sodium carboxymethylcellulose (SCMC), poloxamer 407, hydroxyethylcellulose, hydroxypropylcellulose, hydroxypropylmethylcellulose, and the mucoadhesive polymer carbopol 934P. The selected formulations (based on the mucoadhesive force) were studied for different mechanical properties, such as mucoadhesive strength, hardness, compressibility, adhesiveness, and cohesiveness through Texture Profile Analyzer. In vitro satranidazole release from the prepared formulations was also determined and compared with marketed preparation of metronidazole (Metrogyl gel). The formulation SC30 (containing SCMC 3% w/v) showed maximum mucoadhesive strength (167.72 +/- 3.76 g) and adhesiveness (-46.23 +/- 0.34 N mm), with low hardness (9.81 +/- 0.04 N) and compressibility (40.05 +/- 0.48 N mm) and moderate cohesiveness (0.87 +/- 0.01). SC30 formulation exhibited long-term release. Thus, SC30 gel was evaluated for its clinical effectiveness along with marketed metronidazole gel. At the end of the study (42 days of clinical studies), both formulations were found to significantly reduce the probing depth, plaque index, gingival index, calculus criteria, and bleeding index. However, the SC30 gel was more effective in reducing the above parameters than marketed metronidazole gel. This study confirmed the acceptability and effectiveness of satranidazole gel for treatment of periodontitis.

Abstract
e18005 Background: Prophylactic treatment with recombinant human granulocyte colony stimulating factor (rhGCSF) is used to decrease the severity and duration of neutropenia in patients receiving myelosupressive chemotherapy. It can be used during induction and consolidation chemotherapy in acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Mechanism of action of pegylated GCSF is the same as filgrastim except for delayed clearance. Few studies addressed the use of pegylated filgrasim in AML. Methods: After 24 hours of consolidation chemotherapy, 8 patients in the study arm received single dose of subcutaneous 6 mg pegfilgrastim. The control group received daily filgrastim at a dose of 5 microgram per kg.until absolute neutroophil count of 2 ×109 cells/μL for 2 consecutive days. The neutrophil recovery time, febrile neutropenia and its duration, duration of hospitalization and safety profiles were compared. Results: There were 20 episodes of pegfilgrastim administration. The median age was 41 years in pegfilgrastim arm and 39 years in filgrastim arm. Medium time to neutrophil recovery was 14 days for pegfilgrastim arm and 17 days for filgrastim arm. In the pegfilgrastim arm 12 (60%) episodes of febrile neutropenia occurred compared to 11 (55%) in filgrastim arm. The median duration of febrile neutropenia was 3 days in pegfilgrastim arm versus 4 days in filgrastim arm. The median duration of hospitalization was 15 days in pegfilgrastim arm and 18 days in filgrastim arm. Safety profile and complete remission status did not differ between the two groups. Conclusions: The present study showed favorable profile of pegfilgrastim for netrophil recovery, duration of neutropenia and hospital stay. There was no difference with regard to safety or response to treatment. No significant financial relationships to disclose.

Abstract
This paper reports results from electrical and thermal conduction measurements carried out on the DNA-gold composite for which the overall conduction is shown to be dominated by the DNA rather than the discontinuous gold coatings. The electrical and thermal conductivities of the composite were about 14 S/cm and 150 W/(m K) at room temperature, respectively. The resulting value of 3.6 x 10(-4) W ohms/K(2) for the Lorentz number indicates that thermal transport in the DNA is phonon-dominated and that the molecular vibrations play a key role in both electrical and thermal conduction processes of DNA molecules.
