Abstract
A large number of studies have reported the findings for masticatory efficiency tests; however, some objective masticatory efficiency tests have a drawback, in that subjects are required to spit out the test material. This study examined the possibility of a masticatory efficiency test that evaluates the intensity of odours released when chewing an odour compound-containing material. A total of 20 volunteers were used in this study. The odour intensity in the breath after chewing a gum was measured by portable odour sensor device. The odour intensity after chewing the gum was measured over four chewing durations and at four intervals between spitting out and measurement of the odour intensity. The volume of stimulated saliva was measured by calculating the difference in the weight of the gauze before and after chewing to examine the effect of saliva flow. With an increase in chewing duration, odour intensity reduced. The odour intensity was the highest immediately after chewing. There was a positive correlation between odour intensity and gummy jelly-related masticatory efficiency test value (G-METV), which was significant for 10-s chewing. The regression equation was calculated from three objective variables of odour intensity and G-METV as dependent variable. Pearson's correlation coefficient between G-METV and the odour intensity-related masticatory efficiency value (O-METV) was 0·68. The coefficient of variation of O-METV was significantly lower than that of G-METV. These results suggest that the masticatory performance can be estimated by measuring the odour intensity immediately after chewing food containing odour compounds for 10 s.

Abstract
Thirty-five patients underwent CT examination 15 to 30 min after abdominal angiography with ioxaglate. The gallbladder was visualized in 12 patients in the absence of clinical evidence of renal impairment. Gallbladder opacification on CT examinations shortly after angiography shows that the hepatobiliary tract is important in the excretion of ioxaglate.

Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the efficacy of direct MR arthrography for diagnosing plica synovialis mediopatellaris (PSM). Material and Methods: Twenty-two knees of 19 patients were examined by direct MR arthrography. In 19 of those knees, field-echo T2*-weighted transaxial images were obtained with intra-articular administration of 40 ml of saline (“direct MR arthrography”). In the other 3 knees, T1-weighted transaxial images were obtained with intra-articular administration of 40 ml of gadopentetate dimeglumine. Conventional MR images were evaluated prior to direct MR arthrography in 12 of the 22 knees. The results of direct MR arthrography and conventional MR imaging were compared with the arthroscopic findings. Results: Direct MR arthrography demonstrated 17 of 19 PSMs proved on arthroscopy. The features of 16 PSMs on direct MR arthrography corresponded accurately with the arthroscopic classification. Conventional MR demonstrated only 3 plicae. Conclusion: Direct MR arthrography enabled accurate diagnosis of PSMs and could replace diagnostic arthroscopy.

Abstract
In 3 patients with primary hepatic malignancies, a communication between the right gastric vein and the left portal vein system was recognized at angiography. The right gastric vein entered directly into the left lateral portal veins in 2 patients and into the left medial portal veins in one. Portal angio-CT performed in one patient demonstrated a specific defect only in the left lateral superior area of the liver, consistent with the segmental opacification of the portal vein branch recognized on the angiogram. This rare communication was seen in 3 (1.5%) of 200 consecutive patients who underwent celiac angiography and is most likely an anomaly in which the right gastric vein directly enters the left portal vein instead of the portal vein trunk. When interpreting a filling defect not associated with a mass lesion on portal angio-CT for hepatic neoplasms or the right gastric vein communicating with the left portal vein system on the angiogram, this particular anomaly should be considered.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Recently, several studies have shown that specific single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) affect liver fibrosis progression in patients with hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. In this study, we examined the impact of donor and recipient SNPs on the progression of fibrosis after liver transplantation for HCV infection. METHODS This cohort study enrolled 43 patients with HCV infection who underwent liver transplantation at our hospital. We evaluated 5 genotypes (rs4374383, rs2629751, rs9380516, rs8099917, and rs738409) that have been reported to be significant predictors of fibrosis in HCV infection using a Taqman assay. RESULTS Liver fibrosis (stage ≥ F1, New Inuyama classification) was detected at 1 year after liver transplantation in 30 cases (70%). The rs2629751 non-AA-genotype was found to be significantly associated with fibrosis progression at 1 year after liver transplantation (AA:GG or GA = 46%:88%, P < .05). The primary outcome was stage ≥F2 (portoportal septa) or liver-related mortality in 22 patients. The time to stage ≥F2 fibrosis or liver-related mortality was significantly different only in terms of the donor rs2629751 genotype (AA:GG or GA = 5.5 ± 0.6 years:3.6 ± 0.7 years, P = .025). CONCLUSIONS The rs2629751 genotype may be an important predictor of posttransplant outcome in HCV-infected patients. This result might be useful in donor selection for liver transplantation in HCV-infected patients and may guide therapeutic decisions regarding early antiviral treatment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Following improvements in patient and graft survival after liver transplantation (LT), the recipients' quality of life has become an important focus of patient care. Sleep is closely related to physical and mental health; however, sleep disturbances in LT patients have not yet been evaluated. METHODS We assessed 59 LT patients (aged ≥18 years) between September 2011 and September 2012. The patients completed the restless legs syndrome (RLS), 36-item short-form health survey (SF-36), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), and Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) questionnaires. In addition, laboratory data were obtained and neuropsychological tests (NPT) were performed during study entry. RESULTS Thirty-eight patients (64%) were included in the poor sleep group (PSQI ≥6 or ESS ≥10). The SF-36 scores were lower in the poor sleep group than in the good sleep group. Eleven patients (18%) had RLS. An NPT score ≥3 indicated minimal hepatic encephalopathy (MHE3). The MHE3 group consisted of 22 patients (43%). The time after LT was shorter; serum albumin, branched chain amino acid/tyrosine molar ratio (BTR), and role limitations due to poor physical health were lower; and serum ammonia levels were higher in the MHE3 group than in the MHE0-2 group. When the poor sleep group was divided into subgroups (control, MHE, RLS, and unknown), MHE patients had high model for end-stage liver disease scores, high ammonia levels, and low BTR, whereas RLS patients showed a short time after LT. CONCLUSION Sixty-four percent of recipients were classified as poor sleepers. SF-36 scores were lower for poor sleepers than good sleepers. RLS and MHE are major diseases that cause sleep disturbances in patients after LT.

Abstract
PURPOSE There are reports that elemental diet (ED) ameliorates oral mucositis caused by antineoplastic chemotherapy. Although this effectiveness may be partly due to high nutrient absorption, the effects of chemotherapy on mucosal defense mechanisms remain unclear. We investigated the effects of oral supplementation with ED on mucin in 5-fluorouracil (5-FU)-induced intestinal mucositis. METHODS 5-FU was administered to rats orally once daily, and ED was supplied orally twice daily for 5 days. The severity of mucositis was assessed by length, dry tissue weight, and villus height of the intestinal tract. Using anti-mucin monoclonal antibody, we compared the immunoreactivity in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract and mucin content by histological and biochemical examinations. RESULTS Oral supplementation with ED reduced histological damage and loss of length, dry tissue weight, and villus height induced by 5-FU administration. ED markedly altered PGM34 antibody immunoreactivity and mucin contents in the small intestine of rats with 5-FU-induced mucositis. CONCLUSIONS ED may possibly be more effective for the prevention of antineoplastic chemotherapy-induced mucositis through the activation of GI mucus cells.

Abstract
Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) can cause dyspeptic symptoms, including abdominal pain. Gastric mucus is important as the first line of defense against luminal irritants. In the present study, we investigated whether gastric mucus secretion could influence the severity of gastric mucosal injuries or NSAID-induced dyspeptic symptoms. Fifteen Helicobacter pylori-negative, healthy males were administered two types of NSAIDs, a non-selective cyclooxygenase inhibitor, naproxen (300 mg, twice a day), or a cyclooxygenase-2-selective inhibitor, etodolac (200 mg, twice a day), for 1 week in a crossover study, with an interval of ≥ 4 weeks. Study participants underwent endoscopic examinations before and after treatment. Pentagastrin-stimulated gastric secretions were collected for 10 min during endoscopic examinations, and were analyzed for gastric acid levels (mEq/10 min) and mucus output (mg hexose/10 min). The grade of gastric mucosal injury was assessed endoscopically. Among 29 subjects who completed the crossover study, 11 individuals reported abdominal pain following the administration of naproxen or etodolac for 1 week, as judged by elevated pain scores, while 18 individuals did not report abdominal pain. The occurrence of symptoms was not associated with the type of NSAIDs administered or the occurrence of erosive injury visualized by endoscopy. Gastric mucus secretion was significantly increased in subjects without drug-induced abdominal pain (P < 0.05), whereas it was significantly reduced in those with drug-induced abdominal pain (P < 0.05). In conclusion, the occurrence of NSAID-induced abdominal pain is associated with reduced levels of gastric mucus secretion rather than the occurrence of endoscopic mucosal injury.

Abstract
AIMS The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of genomic DNA purified from Candida albicans and pneumonia-related pathogens, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus, on in vitro biofilm formation and morphological change of 3 Candida species (C. albicans, C. glabrata, and C. tropicalis). METHODS AND RESULTS Biofilm formation was evaluated by the crystal violet assay and colony-forming unit counts. Morphological characteristics of biofilms were evaluated by scanning electron microscopy and fluorescence microscopy. Addition of DNA at a low concentration (<1·0 μg ml(-1)) significantly increased biofilm mass of all three Candida species. In contrast, the addition of DNA at a high concentration (10 μg ml(-1)) decreased the biofilm mass. Interestingly, the formation of hyphae in a dense network of yeast cells was observed in C. albicans biofilms exposed to a low concentration of DNA (<1·0 μg ml(-1)). CONCLUSIONS These findings demonstrated that extracellular DNA (eDNA) plays a crucial role in Candida biofilm formation and suggested that eDNA may induce the morphological transition from yeast to hyphal growth form during C. albicans biofilm development. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY A novel therapy targeting eDNA may be applicable for Candida infection to decrease biofilm formation and hyphal formation.

Abstract
The plasma electrode structure of a 14 GHz ECR ion source was modified to enlarge the plasma volume of low electron temperature region. The result shows that the extracted beam current reached about 0.6 mA/cm(2) with about 40 W microwave power. To investigate the correlation between the volume of the low electron temperature region and the H(-) current, a vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) spectrometer had been installed to observe light emission in the VUV wavelength range from the plasma. From the results of the negative ion beam current and that from VUV spectrometry, production rate of vibrationally excited hydrogen molecule seems to be enhanced by increasing the volume of low electron temperature region.

Abstract
Although extracellular matrix (ECM) stiffness is an important factor of the extracellular microenvironment and is known to direct the lineage specification of stem cells and affect cancer progression, the molecular mechanisms that sense ECM stiffness have not yet been elucidated. In this study, we show that the proline-rich linker (PRL) region of vinculin and the PRL region-binding protein vinexin are involved in sensing stiffness of ECM substrates. A rigid substrate increases cytoskeleton-associated vinculin, and the fraction of vinculin stably localizing at focal adhesions (FAs) is larger on rigid ECM than on soft ECM. Mutations in the PRL region or the depletion of vinexin expression impair these regulations. Furthermore, vinexin depletion impaired the stiffness-dependent regulation of cell migration. These results suggest that the interaction of the PRL region of vinculin with vinexin α plays a critical role in sensing ECM stiffness and mechanotransduction.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Gastric mucus is considered to play an essential role in gastric mucosal defense mechanisms, especially when irritants are present in the stomach. AIM To investigate the relationship between low-dose aspirin-induced gastropathy and gastric secretory function, especially gastric mucus secretion, in healthy volunteers. METHODS Thirty male, asymptomatic, Helicobacter pylori pylori-negative healthy volunteers were asked to take 100 mg of enteric-coated aspirin (Bayaspirin) once a day for 10 days. Endoscopic examination was performed before and 3 and 10 days after drug administration. The extent of endoscopically assessed gastric mucosal injury was semi-quantitatively evaluated according to the modified Lanza score. The pentagastrin-stimulated gastric juice was collected for 10 min during the endoscopic examination and subjected to analysis for gastric acid (mEq/10 min) or mucus (mg hexose/10 min) output. RESULTS Overall, the 10-day aspirin treatment significantly increased gastric mucus secretion from 0.8 (interquartile range 1.7) to 1.6 (1.6) mg hexose/10 min (P < 0.05), with a concomitant and significant decrease in the gastric acid/mucus ratio from 4.3 (5.2) to 2.9 (4.7) (P < 0.01). Subsequent analysis of two subgroups of volunteers categorized according to their endoscopic status ("severe gastropathy" vs. "modest gastropathy") revealed that changes in gastric secretory parameters occurred exclusively in those subjects without severe gastric injury; there was no alteration in these parameters in subjects with severe gastric injury. CONCLUSIONS The results of this study suggest that the reactive increase in gastric mucus secretion is an adaptive defense mechanism against low-dose aspirin-induced gastropathy. In some individuals, such a response may be insufficient to prevent the development of severe mucosal injury and even ulcers and their complications.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) produces contrast among different kinds of tissues according to their diffusibility characteristics. The purpose of our study was to evaluate the role of DWI including measurement of apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) values in recognizing benignancy or malignancy of orbital masses. METHODS A total of 39 orbital masses were evaluated visually for signal characteristics on DWI and ADC maps. ADC values were calculated for each lesion. Visual signal characteristics were compared using the Fisher exact test. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis was carried out to determine sensitivity and specificity for distinguishing malignant from benign lesions using ADC values. The Mann-Whitney U test was applied to compare the ADC values between orbital lymphomas and idiopathic orbital inflammatory (IOI) lesions, and between optic nerve sheath meningiomas and gliomas. RESULTS Visual assessment revealed no significant difference between benign and malignant lesions on DWI (p-value = 0.66). However, visual assessment of ADC maps revealed a statistically significant (p-value ≤ 0.0001) between benign and malignant lesions. ROC analysis showed a sensitivity of 83.33 % and a specificity of 85.71 % when using an optimal cut off ADC value of 0.84 × 10(-3) mm(2)/s for differentiating malignant from benign lesions. Significant differences in mean ADC values were observed between lymphomas and IOI lesions (p-value = 0.05), and between optic nerve sheath meningiomas and gliomas (p-value = 0.03). CONCLUSION DWI is useful for differentiating malignant and benign orbital tumors if accompanied by visual assessment of ADC maps and ADC value calculations.

Abstract
The absorption, distribution and excretion of radioactivity were investigated in male Sprague-Dawley rats after a single intravenous or subcutaneous dose of 14C-azacitidine. After subcutaneous administration, 14C-azacitidine was rapidly absorbed and the radioactivity was distributed to the tissues. The absorption of radioactivity after subcutaneous administration was 76.6% of that observed after intravenous administration. There were no marked differences in the tissue distribution of the radioactivity between administration routes. The concentrations of radioactivity in most tissues, including the spleen and bone marrow, which are sites of action of azacitidine, were higher than those in the plasma. Particularly high concentrations of radioactivity were detected in the spleen, kidney and liver. The accumulation of radioactivity in blood cells increased from 0.5 to 48 h. The binding of azacitidine to serum protein was low at <9%, and the cumulative urinary and fecal excretion of radioactivity for 168 h after intravenous or subcutaneous administration was >95% of the administered dose, indicating that radioactivity did not accumulate in the tissues. The radioactivity was mainly excreted in the urine.

Abstract
We investigate the possibility of the existence of the exotic torus configuration in the high-spin excited states of (40)Ca. We here consider the spin alignments about the symmetry axis. To this end, we use a three-dimensional cranked Skyrme Hartree-Fock method and search for stable single-particle configurations. We find one stable state with the torus configuration at the total angular momentum J=60 ħ and an excitation energy of about 170 MeV in all calculations using various Skyrme interactions. The total angular momentum J=60 ħ consists of aligned 12 nucleons with the orbital angular momenta Λ=+4, +5, and +6 for spin-up or -down neutrons and protons. The obtained results strongly suggest that a macroscopic amount of circulating current breaking the time-reversal symmetry emerges in the high-spin excited state of (40)Ca.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The fraction of exhaled nitric oxide (FENO) is reduced by anti-inflammatory treatment in asthma. However, the FENO level is also regulated by individual demographics and there is considerable variation among clinically stable patients. OBJECTIVE We hypothesized that some demographics may be responsible for persistent FENO elevation despite inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) therapy in asthma. METHODS This was a prospective observational study. We initially screened 250 stable asthmatics and determined the FENO cut-off point for identifying poorly controlled asthma defined by one of the following criteria: Asthma control test <20, or forced expiratory volume in one-second % of predicted <80%, or peak expiratory flow variability <80% (Study 1). After 12-weeks, 229 patients who maintained high or low FENO were selected and the independent factors which might contribute to a high FENO were examined (Study 2). RESULTS A FENO level >39.5 p.p.b. yielded 67% sensitivity and 76% specificity for identifying the patients with poorly controlled asthma. The persistent high FENO group (≥ 40 p.p.b.) was more likely to be ex-smokers, to show evidence of atopy (positive specific IgE, higher serum IgE and blood eosinophils), and to have allergic comorbidities. Especially, past smoking history, blood eosinophils, and chronic rhinosinusitis were identified to be independent predictors of high FENO. Neither the dose of ICS nor other medication use showed any difference between the groups. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE These results suggested that past smoking history, blood eosinophilia, and chronic rhinosinusitis are involved in the persistent airway inflammation detected by FENO. Although their relative contributions on FENO values should be further quantified, clarification of the features of the subjects with high FENO might provide clues for adjustment of the treatment approach in asthma.

Abstract
Rat small intestinal goblet cell mucins reacting with monoclonal antibody HCM31 increase significantly during regeneration from experimental mucosal damage and at the period of expulsion of parasitic nematode, Nippostrongylus brasiliensis (N.b). The reduction in reactivity of HCM31 with mucin upon neuraminidase treatment, suggested that HCM31 recognizes sialylated oligosaccharide on mucin. HCM31-reactive sialomucins are therefore considered to play an important role in the physiological and pathological changes in the gastrointestinal mucosa. To determine the epitope for HCM31, oligosaccharide-alditols reacted with HCM31 were obtained from the small intestinal mucins of N.b-infected rats and purified by ion-exchange chromatography followed by normal-phase HPLC. Two HCM31-reactive oligosaccharide-alditols were obtained. Analyses using tandem mass spectrometry and NMR spectroscopy showed that these oligosaccharides were core 4 mucin-type oligosaccharides having a common tetrasaccharide sequence, NeuAcα2-3(GalNAcβ1-4)Galβ1-4GlcNAcβ- (Sd(a) blood group antigen). These structures were not found in the small intestinal mucin oligosaccharides from uninfected rats. This epitope specificity of HCM31 was also confirmed using previously established anti-GM2 and anti-Sd(a) antibodies. Taken together, these results strongly suggest that HCM31 specifically recognizes mucin-type oligosaccharides with the Sd(a) tetrasaccharide sequence. Immunohistochemical examination of human gastrointestinal tracts showed that HCM31 site-specifically stained the goblet cells in normal sigmoid colon and normal rectum, but the goblet cells stained with HCM31 were reduced in the corresponding cancer tissues. HCM31 seems to be useful for diagnosis of colonic cancer and for examining the function of secretory-type mucin with Sd(a) antigen.

Abstract
Previous x-ray diffraction measurements revealed the pressure-induced decomposition of an fcc LaH2.3 into H-rich and H-poor fcc phases around 11 GPa. The present neutron diffraction measurements on LaD2 confirm the formation of NaCl-type LaD as a counterpart of the D-rich LaD2+δ by disproportionation. First-principles enthalpy and lattice dynamic calculations demonstrate that the NaCl-type LaH is stabilized at high pressures and can be recovered at ambient conditions. Finding the NaCl-type LaH will pave the way for investigations on the site-dependent nature of hydrogen-metal interactions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Oxidative stress plays a critical role in liver fibrogenesis. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) stimulate hepatic stellate cells (HSCs), and ROS-mediated increases in calcium influx further increase ROS production. Azelnidipine is a calcium blocker that has been shown to have antioxidant effects in endothelial cells and cardiomyocytes. Therefore, we evaluated the anti-fibrotic and antioxidative effects of azelnidipine on liver fibrosis. EXPERIMENTAL APPROACH We used TGF-β1-activated LX-2 cells (a human HSC line) and mouse models of fibrosis induced by treatment with either carbon tetrachloride (CCl(4) ) or thioacetamide (TAA). KEY RESULTS Azelnidipine inhibited TGF-β1 and angiotensin II (Ang II)-activated α1(I) collagen mRNA expression in HSCs. Furthermore, TGF-β1- and Ang II-induced oxidative stress and TGF-β1-induced p38 and JNK phosphorylation were reduced in HSCs treated with azelnidipine. Azelnidipine significantly decreased inflammatory cell infiltration, pro-fibrotic gene expressions, HSC activation, lipid peroxidation, oxidative DNA damage and fibrosis in the livers of CCl(4) - or TAA-treated mice. Finally, azelnidipine prevented a decrease in the expression of some antioxidant enzymes and accelerated regression of liver fibrosis in CCl(4) -treated mice. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS Azelnidipine inhibited TGF-β1- and Ang II-induced HSC activation in vitro and attenuated CCl(4) - and TAA-induced liver fibrosis, and it accelerated regression of CCl(4) -induced liver fibrosis in mice. The anti-fibrotic mechanism of azelnidipine against CCl(4) -induced liver fibrosis in mice may have been due an increased level of antioxidant defence. As azelnidipine is widely used in clinical practice without serious adverse effects, it may provide an effective new strategy for anti-fibrotic therapy.

Abstract
Organic-inorganic hybrid solar cells based on poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) and (6,6)-phenyl C61 butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) hybridized with ZnO nanorods were fabricated by growing vertical ZnO nanorods on indium tin oxide (ITO) substrates and filling with bulk heterojunction polymers (P3HT:PCBM). The interface between the organic and inorganic nanostructures influences the performance of the organic-inorganic hybrid solar cells. In this paper, the influence of the state of the P3HT:PCBM/ZnO interface on the performance of organic-inorganic hybrid solar cells is examined. The solar cell performance was high when the P3HT:PCBM/ZnO junction area was large. The charge separation is effective when the active layer/electron transport layer junction area is large, resulting in increasing photocurrent and a high conversion efficiency. The bulk-heterojunction polymer concentration was kept low to infiltrate into the ZnO nanorods, resulting in a large active layer/electron transport layer junction area.

Abstract
Discs large homolog 5 (Dlg5) is a member of the membrane-associated guanylate kinase adaptor family of proteins, some of which are involved in the regulation of epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT). Dlg5 has been described as a susceptibility gene for Crohn's disease; however, the physiological function of Dlg5 is unknown. We show here that transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β)-induced EMT suppresses Dlg5 expression in LLc-PK1 cells. Depletion of Dlg5 expression by knockdown promoted the expression of the mesenchymal marker proteins, fibronectin and α-smooth muscle actin, and suppressed the expression of E-cadherin. In addition, activation of JNK and p38, which are stimulated by TGF-β, was enhanced by Dlg5 depletion. Furthermore, inhibition of the TGF-β receptor suppressed the effects of Dlg5 depletion. These observations suggest that Dlg5 is involved in the regulation of TGF-βreceptor-dependent signals and EMT.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Low-dose aspirin is known to cause upper gastrointestinal complications. The mechanism by which the aspirin disrupts gastric mucosal integrity remains to be clarified. In this study we investigated the temporal association of gastric secretory parameters (acid and mucus) with aspirin-induced gastropathy. METHODS In 42 long-term low-dose aspirin-takers and the same number of sex- and age-matched controls, pentagastrin-stimulated gastric juice was collected for 10 min during endoscopic examination. The collected gastric juice was divided and half was submitted to analysis for gastric acid (mEq/10 min) and the other half was analyzed for mucin (mg hexose/10 min) output. The grade of gastric mucosal injury was assessed endoscopically according to the modified Lanza score, and a score of more than 4 was defined as the presence of severe gastropathy. RESULTS While gastric acid secretion did not differ significantly between aspirin-takers and controls, gastric mucus secretion, in terms of mucin output, was significantly increased in aspirin-takers compared to controls (4.1 (SD 4.8) vs. 2.3 (1.4) mg hexose/10 min, P < 0.05). Consequently, the acid/mucin ratio was significantly decreased in aspirin-takers compared to controls (1.2 (1.0) vs. 1.7 (1.4), P < 0.05). In the subanalysis of 25 aspirin-takers without severe gastropathy, gastric mucus secretion was increased and the acid/mucus ratio was decreased compared with controls, but there was no such association in the remaining 17 aspirin-takers with severe gastropathy. CONCLUSION Overall, gastric mucus secretion is increased in aspirin-takers, suggesting a functional adaptive response to long-term administration of the drug. However, it is possible that the adaptive response is impaired in some aspirin takers, who might be susceptible to severe upper gastrointestinal complication.

Abstract
Leucine-rich repeat kinase 2 (LRRK2), a large protein kinase containing multi-functional domains, has been identified as the causal molecule for autosomal-dominant Parkinson's disease (PD). In the present study, we demonstrated for the first time that (i) LRRK2 interacts with tau in a tubulin-dependent manner; (ii) LRRK2 directly phosphorylates tubulin-associated tau, but not free tau; (iii) LRRK2 phosphorylates tau at Thr181 as one of the target sites; and (iv) The PD-associated LRRK2 mutations, G2019S and I2020T, elevated the degree of tau-phosphorylation. These results provide direct proof that tau is a physiological substrate for LRRK2. Furthermore, we revealed that LRRK2-mediated phosphorylation of tau reduces its tubulin-binding ability. Our results suggest that LRRK2 plays an important role as a physiological regulator for phosphorylation-mediated dissociation of tau from microtubules, which is an integral aspect of microtubule dynamics essential for neurite outgrowth and axonal transport.
