Abstract
We report first measurements of e^{+}e^{-} pair production in the mass region 0.4<M_{ee}<2.6 GeV/c^{2} at low transverse momentum (p_{T}<0.15 GeV/c) in noncentral Au+Au collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=200 GeV and U+U collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=193 GeV. Significant enhancement factors, expressed as ratios of data over known hadronic contributions, are observed in the 40%-80% centrality of these collisions. The excess yields peak distinctly at low p_{T} with a width (sqrt[⟨p_{T}^{2}⟩]) between 40 and 60 MeV/c. The absolute cross section of the excess depends weakly on centrality, while those from a theoretical model calculation incorporating an in-medium broadened ρ spectral function and radiation from a quark gluon plasma or hadronic cocktail contributions increase dramatically with an increasing number of participant nucleons. Model calculations of photon-photon interactions generated by the initial projectile and target nuclei describe the observed excess yields but fail to reproduce the p_{T}^{2} distributions.

Abstract
We report measurements of the nuclear modification factor R_{CP} for charged hadrons as well as identified π^{+(-)}, K^{+(-)}, and p(p[over ¯]) for Au+Au collision energies of sqrt[s_{NN}]=7.7, 11.5, 14.5, 19.6, 27, 39, and 62.4 GeV. We observe a clear high-p_{T} net suppression in central collisions at 62.4 GeV for charged hadrons which evolves smoothly to a large net enhancement at lower energies. This trend is driven by the evolution of the pion spectra but is also very similar for the kaon spectra. While the magnitude of the proton R_{CP} at high p_{T} does depend on the collision energy, neither the proton nor the antiproton R_{CP} at high p_{T} exhibit net suppression at any energy. A study of how the binary collision-scaled high-p_{T} yield evolves with centrality reveals a nonmonotonic shape that is consistent with the idea that jet quenching is increasing faster than the combined phenomena that lead to enhancement.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Typically, clinical measures of cognition require motor or speech responses. Thus, a significant percentage of people with disabilities are not able to complete standardized assessments. This situation could be resolved by employing a more accessible test administration method, such as a brain-computer interface (BCI). A BCI can circumvent motor and speech requirements by translating brain activity to identify a subject's response. By eliminating the need for motor or speech input, one could use a BCI to assess an individual who previously did not have access to clinical tests. APPROACH We developed an asynchronous, event-related potential BCI-facilitated administration procedure for the peabody picture vocabulary test (PPVT-IV). We then tested our system in typically developing individuals (N = 11), as well as people with cerebral palsy (N = 19) to compare results to the standardized PPVT-IV format and administration. MAIN RESULTS Standard scores on the BCI-facilitated PPVT-IV, and the standard PPVT-IV were highly correlated (r = 0.95, p < 0.001), with a mean difference of 2.0 ± 6.4 points, which is within the standard error of the PPVT-IV. SIGNIFICANCE Thus, our BCI-facilitated PPVT-IV provided comparable results to the standard PPVT-IV, suggesting that populations for whom standardized cognitive tests are not accessible could benefit from our BCI-facilitated approach.

Abstract
We present a measurement of the effective weak mixing angle parameter sin^{2}θ_{eff}^{ℓ} in pp[over ¯]→Z/γ^{*}→μ^{+}μ^{-} events at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV, collected by the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider and corresponding to 8.6 fb^{-1} of integrated luminosity. The measured value of sin^{2}θ_{eff}^{ℓ}[μμ]=0.23016±0.00064 is further combined with the result from the D0 measurement in pp[over ¯]→Z/γ^{*}→e^{+}e^{-} events, resulting in sin^{2}θ_{eff}^{ℓ}[comb]=0.23095±0.00040. This combined result is the most precise measurement from a single experiment at a hadron collider and is the most precise determination using the coupling of the Z/γ^{*} to light quarks.

Abstract
Abstract
Background: Invasive Lobular Breast Carcinoma (ILC) is the second most common histologic subtype of breast cancer, comprising 10-15% of all cases. ILC is clinically and molecularly distinguished from the major subtype–Invasive Ductal Carcinoma (IDC)–by loss of E-cadherin (CDH1). Studies on ILC remain sparse, in part due to limited cell culture models. The Women's Cancer Research Center (WCRC) has therefore set up a combined effort of breast surgical oncologists, medical oncologists, pathologists, and cancer biologists to collect fresh tissues and establish additional ILC cell lines.
Methods: Tumor cells were grown using irradiated fibroblast conditioned media (CM) in hypoxic (5% O2) conditions. Sanger sequencing and Droplet Digital PCR (ddPCR) were utilized to test for mutation in CDH1 in tumor and circulating DNA (cfDNA), using germline DNA as control. DNA copy number status in the tumor was detected using nanoString approach. Expression of E-cadherin and a series of lineage markers was elucidated using Immunoblotting (IB) and Immunofluorescence (IF). A panel of ILC (MDA-MB-134, Sum44PE, IPH-926) and IDC (MCF-7, MDA-MB-231) cell lines was included for comparison. After establishment, WCRC-25 population doubling was compared between growth in CM or Dulbecco's Modified Eagle's Medium (DMEM), and hypoxic (5% O2) or normoxic (21% O2) conditions. Growth phenotypes were characterized in 2D, Ultra Low Attachment (ULA), and soft agar.
Results: WCRC-25 was successfully established from the pleural effusion of a 77-year old patient with metastatic ILC. The patient had stage IV (T3N3M1) ER+/PR-/HER2- ILC; was treated with bilateral mastectomy, radiation therapy, and multiple lines of chemotherapy (FOLFOX due to initial misdiagnosis; 2 cycles carboplatin/paclitaxel; anastrazole, fulvestrant, pegylated liposomal doxorubicin, gemcitabine, exemastane, and eribulin (with denosumab for bone lesions); had metastatic lesions in stomach, bone, pleura, and pericardium; and ultimately passed away from progressive pleural effusions roughly 3 years after diagnosis. A novel nonsense mutation of CDH1 was observed in exon 13 (Q705*) in cell line DNA, resulting in a premature stop codon. The same mutation was confirmed in cfDNA obtained from longitudinal blood samples from the patient. Copy number analysis revealed deletion of the second CDH1 copy in tumor, and E-cadherin protein loss was confirmed by IB and IF. WCRC-25 cells expressed epithelial cell markers CK8/18 and EpCAM, and as expected did not express stromal marker αSMA. ERα expression was very low, and not sufficient for measurable hormone response. Population doubling was significantly faster in hypoxic compared to normoxic conditions, regardless of media type, but minimal in 3D.
Conclusions: WCRC-25 is a novel ILC cell line, defined by CDH1 nonsense truncating mutation and LOH, resulting in loss of E-cadherin protein expression. Cells show favorable growth characteristics in hypoxic conditions and maintain epithelial-dominated protein expression. We are currently performing RNA seq analysis of the matched primary tumor and metastatic samples from the stomach, peritoneum/falciform ligament, pleural effusion and skin, which we will compare and contrast with that of the established WCRC-25 cell line.

Abstract
Rapidity-odd directed-flow measurements at midrapidity are presented for Λ, Λ[over ¯], K^{±}, K_{s}^{0}, and ϕ at sqrt[s_{NN}]=7.7, 11.5, 14.5, 19.6, 27, 39, 62.4, and 200 GeV in Au+Au collisions recorded by the Solenoidal Tracker detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. These measurements greatly expand the scope of data available to constrain models with differing prescriptions for the equation of state of quantum chromodynamics. Results show good sensitivity for testing a picture where flow is assumed to be imposed before hadron formation and the observed particles are assumed to form via coalescence of constituent quarks. The pattern of departure from a coalescence-inspired sum rule can be a valuable new tool for probing the collision dynamics.

Abstract
The CDF and D0 experiments at the Fermilab Tevatron have measured the asymmetry between yields of forward- and backward-produced top and antitop quarks based on their rapidity difference and the asymmetry between their decay leptons. These measurements use the full data sets collected in proton-antiproton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of sqrt[s]=1.96 TeV. We report the results of combinations of the inclusive asymmetries and their differential dependencies on relevant kinematic quantities. The combined inclusive asymmetry is A_{FB}^{tt[over ¯]}=0.128±0.025. The combined inclusive and differential asymmetries are consistent with recent standard model predictions.

Abstract
Introduction:
Hypertension (HTN) is the most important modifiable stroke risk factor. The Emergency Department (ED) represents an opportunity to identify and treat HTN in difficult-to-reach populations. Electronic health records (EHR) can alert clinicians and researchers when parameters, such as elevated blood pressure (BP) are met. Our primary objective was to determine what proportion of ED patients would utilize prompted BP self-monitoring and respond to texts with home readings consistent with persistent HTN.
Methods:
This was a randomized, controlled trial of patients recruited from a university ED with a volume of about 70,000 adult patient visits per year. Real-time EHR alerts identified patients with systolic BP ≥160 or a diastolic BP ≥100 (stage II HTN) who were likely to be discharged from the ED. At enrollment, all subjects were provided a home BP cuff and were sent weekly text messages to check their BP and text back the values to the study team. Subjects responding to texts and indicating persistent HTN during the 3-week run-in period were randomized to control or a 12-week intervention consisting of healthy behavior text messages and reminders to check BP and text the result back to investigators. We conducted secondary analyses evaluating change in BP over 12 weeks based on the self-reported assessments.
Results:
Over 9,300 patients with elevated BP were identified through the EHR alerts over 7 months; data were abstracted on 1,908 patients. Of these, 169 were approached and 104 patients enrolled (64%). Of those enrolled, 73 (70%) texted back at least 1 BP reading during the run-in period of which 55 (53% of the 104) subjects had persistent HTN; this was higher than pre-specified goal of 25.5%. In those randomized (n=55), SBP decreased 8.9 mm Hg in the intervention group compared to an increase of 8.3 mm Hg in controls (p=0.039, see table).
Conclusion:
Real-time, ED EHR based patient selection combined with mobile health monitoring of BP is feasible and promising.

Abstract
Objective:
Post-stroke sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) is prevalent and may be linked to poor stroke recovery but population-based studies in diverse populations are lacking. Our objective was to examine the association between SDB measured soon after stroke and stroke outcomes and to determine whether associations vary by ethnicity in the population-based Brain Attack Surveillance in Corpus Christi (BASIC) Project.
Methods:
Ischemic stroke (IS) patients were offered SDB screening with the ApneaLink Plus™; SDB was defined as apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) ≥ 10 events per hour. Patient data were collected from interviews and medical records. Functional, neurologic, cognitive, and quality of life (QOL) outcomes were ascertained at 90-days by patient or proxy interviews. Regression models were used to examine associations between SDB and outcomes adjusted for confounders. Interaction terms were used to investigate differences by ethnicity.
Results:
232 NHW and 393 MA IS patients had a successful SDB screening and completed a 90-day interview. Median age was 65 years (IQR:58-75) among MAs and 67 (IQR:58-77) among NHWs. Post-stroke SDB was 68.7% in MAs [median AHI: 16 (IQR:8-26)] and 52.6% in NHWs [median AHI: 10 (IQR:6-23)]. Patients with SDB were more likely to be MA and to have diabetes, hypertension, and higher BMI but less likely to smoke than those without SDB. SDB was associated with worse functional, neurologic, cognitive, and QOL outcomes in MAs but not NHWs (Table).
Conclusions:
SDB is associated with worse stroke outcomes in MAs but not NHWs, the reasons for which should be explored. SDB treatment in MAs may improve outcomes in this subgroup and lessen ethnic stroke outcome disparities.

Abstract
Summary
Objectives:
To demonstrate a technology-based approach to continuously improving the safety of medical processes.
Methods:
The paper describes the Little-JIL process definition language, originally developed to support software engineering, and shows how it can be used to model medical processes. The paper describes a Little- JIL model of a chemotherapy process and demonstrates how this model, and some process analysis technologies that are also briefly described, can be used to identify process defects that pose safety risks.
Results:
Rigorously modeling medical processes with Little-JIL and applying automated analysis techniques to those models helped identify process defects and vulnerabilities and led to improved processes that were reanalyzed to show that the original defects were no longer present.
Conclusions:
Creating detailed and precisely defined models of medical processes that are then used as the basis for rigorous analyses can lead to improvements in the safety of these processes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Accurate tumor grading is essential for treatment planning of pediatric brain tumors. We hypothesized that multiparametric analyses of a combination of permeability metrics and ADC histogram metrics would differentiate high- and low-grade tumors with high accuracy. MATERIALS AND METHODS DTI and dynamic contrast-enhanced MR imaging using T1-mapping with flip angles of 2°, 5°, 10°, and 15°, followed by a 0.1-mmol/kg body weight gadolinium-based bolus was performed on all patients in addition to standard MR imaging. Permeability data were processed and transfer constant from the blood plasma into the extracellular extravascular space, rate constant from the extracellular extravascular space back into blood plasma, extravascular extracellular volume fraction, and fractional blood plasma volume were calculated from 3D tumor volumes. Apparent diffusion coefficient histogram metrics were calculated for 3 separate tumor volumes derived from T2-FLAIR sequences, T1 contrast-enhanced sequences, and permeability maps, respectively. RESULTS Results from 41 patients (0.3-16.76 years of age; mean, 6.22 years) with newly diagnosed contrast-enhancing brain tumors (16 low-grade; 25 high-grade) were included in the institutional review board-approved retrospective analysis. Wilcoxon tests showed a higher transfer constant from blood plasma into extracellular extravascular space and rate constant from extracellular extravascular space back into blood plasma, and lower extracellular extravascular volume fraction (P < .001) in high-grade tumors. The mean ADCs of FLAIR and enhancing tumor volumes were significantly lower in high-grade tumors (P < .001). ROC analysis showed that a combination of extravascular volume fraction and mean ADC of FLAIR volume differentiated high- and low-grade tumors with high accuracy (area under receiver operating characteristic curve = 0.918). CONCLUSIONS ADC histogram metrics combined with permeability metrics differentiate low- and high-grade pediatric brain tumors with high accuracy.

Abstract
Development of medical countermeasures (MCMs) for gastrointestinal (GI) injury following acute radiation exposure requires well-characterized models that can assess not only survival but also secondary endpoints, including structural and functional characteristics of GI damage and recovery that ultimately contribute to long-term survival. The authors conducted a pilot study in a hemi-body shielded Göttingen minipig model of radiation-induced GI injury that enables radiation damage to the GI tract to be evaluated and reduces the potential for hemorrhage and/or damage in other more sensitive organ systems. With shielding of the head, chest, and front legs, radiation dose levels of 14 Gy were required to see significant GI-related morbidity, while dose levels of 16 Gy resulted in significant mortality by day 45 post-irradiation. Periodic scheduled necropsies showed significant reduction in and slow recovery of intestinal crypt count at 14 and 16 Gy. Intestinal proliferative activity was initially increased and then gradually decreased over the course of the study. Histological evidence of marked inflammatory infiltrates was noted in the GI tract at day 5, while collagen deposition, indicative of fibrosis, was observed as early as day 15, peaking at day 30. The radiation dose-responsive indicators of GI damage identified in this model (i.e., intestinal crypt count and proliferative activity) may serve as useful endpoints for evaluation of the efficacy of potential MCMs.

Abstract
In collaboration with the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA), the authors recently conducted a pilot study in a hemi-body shielded model of radiation-induced gastrointestinal (GI) injury in Göttingen minipigs following exposure to radiation dose levels between 8-16 Gy. Herein, the impact of oral dosing procedures is assessed, as well as the specific causes of death in animals exposed to radiation doses of 14 and 16 Gy (n = 64; 32 male, 32 female, between 6 and 8 mo of age). Oral dosing using a 2-tablet placebo system comprised of both immediate release and enteric-coated tablets starting 24 h post-irradiation resulted in inhibited gastric emptying of the enteric-coated tablets, which were found to be retained in the stomach and/or regurgitated. This finding appears to be species-specific, as similar findings have not been reported for other large animal species (e.g., non-human primates). Mortality was primarily dictated by decreased activity, body weight loss (>35%), and/or respiratory distress, despite shielding of the lung. The cause of respiratory distress in animals that were pre-terminally euthanized varied according to the timing of death, with interstitial inflammation and extensive fibrosis observed >20 days post-irradiation. Kidney damage was also identified in most animals after day 10. Changes in the GI tract were consistent with previous studies and included collagen deposition/fibrosis. Observations of inflammatory infiltrates and interstitial inflammation/fibrosis in both shielded and unshielded organs support a strong secondary inflammatory syndrome post-irradiation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Exposure to crystalline silica (SiO2), in the form of quartz, tridymite or cristobalite, can cause respiratory diseases, such as silicosis. However, the observed toxicity and pathogenicity of crystalline silica is highly variable. This has been attributed to a number of inherent and external factors, including the presence of impurities. In cristobalite-rich dusts, substitutions of aluminium (Al) for silicon (Si) in the cristobalite structure, and impurities occluding the silica surface, have been hypothesised to decrease its toxicity. This hypothesis is tested here through the characterisation and in vitro toxicological study of synthesised cristobalite with incremental amounts of Al and sodium (Na) dopants. METHODS Samples of synthetic cristobalite with incremental amounts of Al and Na impurities, and tridymite, were produced through heating of a silica sol-gel. Samples were characterised for mineralogy, cristobalite purity and abundance, particle size, surface area and surface charge. In vitro assays assessed the ability of the samples to induce cytotoxicity and TNF-α production in J774 macrophages, and haemolysis of red blood cells. RESULTS Al-only doped or Al+Na co-doped cristobalite contained between 1 and 4 oxide wt% Al and Na within its structure. Co-doped samples also contained Al- and Na-rich phases, such as albite. Doping reduced cytotoxicity to J774 macrophages and haemolytic capacity compared to non-doped samples. Al-only doping was more effective at decreasing cristobalite reactivity than Al+Na co-doping. The reduction in the reactivity of cristobalite is attributed to both structural impurities and a lower abundance of crystalline silica in doped samples. Neither non-doped nor doped crystalline silica induced production of the pro-inflammatory cytokine TNF-α in J774 macrophages. CONCLUSIONS Impurities can reduce the toxic potential of cristobalite and may help explain the low reactivity of some cristobalite-rich dusts. Whilst further work is required to determine if these effects translate to altered pathogenesis, the results have potential implications for the regulation of crystalline silica exposures.

Abstract
We report the first dijet transverse momentum asymmetry measurements from Au+Au and pp collisions at RHIC. The two highest-energy back-to-back jets reconstructed from fragments with transverse momenta above 2 GeV/c display a significantly higher momentum imbalance in heavy-ion collisions than in the pp reference. When reexamined with correlated soft particles included, we observe that these dijets then exhibit a unique new feature-momentum balance is restored to that observed in pp for a jet resolution parameter of R=0.4, while rebalancing is not attained with a smaller value of R=0.2.

Abstract
The immune system is implicated in the pathogenesis of schizophrenia, with elevated proinflammatory cytokine mRNAs found in the brains of ~40% of individuals with the disorder. However, it is not clear if antibodies (specifically immunoglobulin-γ (IgG)) can be found in the brain of people with schizophrenia and if their abundance relates to brain inflammatory cytokine mRNA levels. Therefore, we investigated the localization and abundance of IgG in the frontal cortex of people with schizophrenia and controls, and the impact of proinflammatory cytokine status on IgG abundance in these groups. Brain IgGs were detected surrounding blood vessels in the human and non-human primate frontal cortex by immunohistochemistry. IgG levels did not differ significantly between schizophrenia cases and controls, or between schizophrenia cases in 'high' and 'low' proinflammatory cytokine subgroups. Consistent with the existence of IgG in the parenchyma of human brain, mRNA and protein of the IgG transporter (FcGRT) were present in the brain, and did not differ according to diagnosis or inflammatory status. Finally, brain-reactive antibody presence and abundance was investigated in the blood of living people. The plasma of living schizophrenia patients and healthy controls contained antibodies that displayed positive binding to Rhesus macaque cerebellar tissue, and the abundance of these antibodies was significantly lower in patients than controls. These findings suggest that antibodies in the brain and brain-reactive antibodies in the blood are present under normal circumstances.

Abstract
We report the first measurement of the elliptic anisotropy (v_{2}) of the charm meson D^{0} at midrapidity (|y|<1) in Au+Au collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=200 GeV. The measurement was conducted by the STAR experiment at RHIC utilizing a new high-resolution silicon tracker. The measured D^{0} v_{2} in 0%-80% centrality Au+Au collisions can be described by a viscous hydrodynamic calculation for a transverse momentum (p_{T}) of less than 4 GeV/c. The D^{0} v_{2} as a function of transverse kinetic energy (m_{T}-m_{0}, where m_{T}=sqrt[p_{T}^{2}+m_{0}^{2}]) is consistent with that of light mesons in 10%-40% centrality Au+Au collisions. These results suggest that charm quarks have achieved local thermal equilibrium with the medium created in such collisions. Several theoretical models, with the temperature-dependent, dimensionless charm spatial diffusion coefficient (2πTD_{s}) in the range of ∼2-12, are able to simultaneously reproduce our D^{0} v_{2} result and our previously published results for the D^{0} nuclear modification factor.

Abstract
This article discusses the infection control and public health measures taken whilst managing a case of laboratory-confirmed rabies, and the challenges faced in implementing these measures. Case management requires intensive multi-disciplinary co-ordination. The Milwaukee protocol, which to date has five reported human rabies survivors associated with its use, has been suggested as a potential management pathway for human rabies. Consensus among hospital and public health clinicians would aid future deployment of this approach in selected cases.

Abstract
Abstract
Background: Women under the age of 40 account for approximately 7% percent of breast cancer patients. Breast tumors from young women are often ER-negative, occur in African-American patients, and have other indicators of high risk: yet, multivariate analyses demonstrated that young age is an independent predictor of poor outcome. Due to the unique nature of the patient population served by DOD, a disproportionate number of breast cancer cases in young women are seen. We compare the characteristics, treatment, and outcomes of young patients diagnosed with breast cancer with those of older patients.
Methods: The databases of the Military Health System Repository and the DOD Central Registration were used to identify female breast cancer patients treated at DOD facilities between 1998 and 2007. Information on demographics, breast cancer stage at diagnosis, definitive surgical treatments, systemic treatment, recurrence rate and overall survival was analyzed by age groups at the time of diagnosis (less than 40 years old, 40 to 49 years, and 50 years or older) using X2 testing with significance defined as p< 0.05.
Results: We identified 10,066 women who were diagnosed with invasive breast cancer at DOD facilities between 1998 and 2007, of which 11.3% (1139) were less than 40 years old at diagnosis. 53% of this young cohort were white, 25% were African-American and 8% were Hispanic (14% undisclosed). The percentage of breast cancer among African-American women in the young cohort was higher than in the older cohorts (19.3% in 40-49yo and 10.6% in ≥50yo). High-grade tumors were significantly more frequent in the younger cohort when compared to the older group (49.5% vs 34.7% and 25.2%, p<0.001). <40yo most commonly presented with Stage II disease (45.3%) at diagnosis, while older groups were mostly diagnosed with Stage I disease (41.6% and 52.4%). The most common subtype of breast cancer across ages was ER+ disease, however, <40yo group had proportionally less ER+ (49% vs 61% and 67.3%, P<0.001). There was a higher rate of bilateral mastectomies among the young women (18.4% vs 9.1% and 5.0%, p<0.0001). Independently of the stage of disease, chemotherapy was given significantly more frequently to <40y (90.43%) and 40-49yo (81.44%) than ≥50yo (53.71%). The 10-year overall survival of younger women was similar to the ≥50yo cohort, despite intensive treatment.
Discussion: This study is one of the largest retrospective studies of women under 40 years old with breast cancer. Younger women with invasive breast cancer had more aggressive tumors presenting at higher stages. In this group with good access to healthcare, younger women still had a similar overall survival rate to older women despite receiving more aggressive treatment and potentially having fewer comorbidities than the older group.
