Abstract
One-day-old Cherry valley meat-strain ducks were used to investigate the effect of supplemental dried oregano powder (DOP) in feed on the productivity, antioxidant enzyme activity, and breast meat quality. One hundred sixty five ducks were assigned to 5 dietary treatments for 42 days. The dietary treatment groups were control group (CON; no antibiotic, no DOP), antibiotic group (ANT; CON+0.1% Patrol), 0.1% DOP (CON+0.1% DOP), 0.5% DOP (CON+0.5% DOP), and 1.0% DOP (CON+1.0% DOP). Upon feeding, 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity of oregano extracts was higher than that of tocopherol, although it was less than that of ascorbic acid. As a result of in vivo study, DOP in the diet showed no effects on final body weight, feed intake, or feed conversion ratio. However, dietary 0.5% and 1% DOP supplementation caused a significant increase in the serum enzyme activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) compared with CON and ANT, while glutathione peroxidase (GPx) in tissue was increased as compared to ANT (p<0.05). Cooking loss from ducks fed with DOP decreased compared with the control ducks. Thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS) values of duck breast meat at 5 d post slaughter was found to be significantly reduced in ducks whose diets were supplemented with 0.5% and 1% DOP (p<0.05). These results suggest that diets containing 0.5% and 1% DOP may beneficially affect antioxidant enzyme activity of GPx and SOD, improve meat cooking loss, and reduce TBARS values in breast meat at 5 d of storage in ducks.

Abstract
Influence of Achyranthes japonica Nakai Extract (AJNE) on properties of pork sausages were studied in the present investigation. AJNE was added to sausages alone or in combination with ascorbic acid to obtain a comparative analysis on properties of control and ascorbic acid added-sausages. Results showed that addition of 0.05% AJNE led to a decrease in color L* and whiteness (W), and an increase in color b* of pork sausage samples (p<0.05). Although color a* of pork sausages containing AJNE was not significantly different, ascorbic acid added-sausages were highest amongst other treatments (p<0.05). Sausages containing AJNE had lower non-heme iron values and peroxide value (POV) than control sausages (p<0.05); however, high nitrosomyoglobin content was observed in AJNE added-sausages (p<0.05). Ascorbic acid led to a decrease in residual nitrite concentration of sausages (p<0.05), but no difference was found in AJNE added-sausages. Free radical scavenging analysis showed that AJNE did not affect 1,1-diphenyl -2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) activity of sausages, whereas ascorbic acid added-sausages showed relatively higher activity among the samples (p<0.05). Addition of AJNE had no influence on texture properties of sausages. In sensory evaluation, AJNE treatment had significant effects on color (p<0.05), but no significant effects on aroma, flavor, springiness, juiciness, and overall acceptability. In conclusion, the addition of AJNE, as a natural supplement may offer natural antioxidants for pork sausages, and appears to be particularly effective in inducing changes in non-heme iron concentration, POV value and nitrosomyglobin content.

Investigation of bioequivalence of a new fixed-dose combination of acarbose and metformin with the corresponding loose combination as well as the drug-drug interaction potential between both drugs in healthy adult male subjects. Abstract
WHAT IS KNOWN AND OBJECTIVE Both metformin and acarbose are recommended monotherapy and add-on therapy in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). A fixed-dose combination (FDC) of acarbose and metformin has been developed to reduce pill burden and potentially improve compliance. The current study investigated the bioequivalence of the acarbose/metformin FDC compared with the individual agents administered simultaneously (loose combination). Secondary endpoints were the safety and tolerability of the FDC and the potential for drug-drug interactions between acarbose and metformin. METHODS A single-centre, randomized, open-label, four-period crossover study was conducted in healthy male Korean subjects aged 18-45 years. Following one-period balanced Williams design, participants were randomized to receive four single oral treatments on different study days separated by ≥7 days' washout. Treatments were as follows: (i) acarbose/metformin 50/500 mg FDC (test); (ii) acarbose 50 mg and metformin 500 mg as loose combination (reference); (iii) acarbose 50 mg; and (iv) metformin 500 mg. Serial blood samples were taken for glucose and insulin levels for 4 h after a sucrose load on the day before and day of study drug administration. Additionally, serial blood samples were taken for analysis of metformin levels for 24 h after each drug containing metformin. The area under the curve for 4 h post-test (AUC0-4 h ) and the maximal serum concentration (Cmax ) of plasma glucose and serum insulin were primary pharmacodynamic (PD) parameters, and Cmax , AUC0-last and AUC for metformin levels were primary pharmacokinetic (PK) parameters. The bioequivalence of the FDC to the loose combination was considered established if the 90% confidence intervals (CIs) of the baseline-adjusted PD parameter ratios (test vs. reference) for plasma glucose and the PK parameter ratios for metformin fell completely within current acceptance limits (0·8-1·25). RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Thirty-three of 40 randomized subjects completed the study; five withdrew consent and two discontinued because of adverse events (AEs). The 24-h plasma concentration-time curves of metformin and the 4-h plasma glucose-time curves after acarbose/metformin FDC (test) and acarbose + metformin loose combination (reference) were almost superimposable. The geometric least squares (LS) mean of the RatioAUC and RatioCmax for plasma glucose after the FDC vs. loose combination, and the LS mean of the ratios in metformin AUC, AUC0-last and Cmax were close to unity, and the 90% CI of all these parameters fell within the predefined equivalence range of 0·8-1·25, confirming bioequivalence. The metformin AUC was reduced by 26% and Cmax by 34% after acarbose + metformin compared with metformin alone. Eight subjects (20·0%) reported AEs, but all were mild, and most were gastrointestinal, as expected for these agents. The incidence of AEs was not higher with the combinations vs. monotherapy. WHAT IS NEW AND CONCLUSION These data demonstrate that the acarbose/metformin FDC is bioequivalent to the loose combination of these agents. Although acarbose slightly reduced the bioavailability of metformin, the accumulated evidence of the efficacy of this combination implies that this is clinically irrelevant. The observed AE profile was consistent with the established knowledge on the safety of the two drugs.

Abstract
Decreased oral clopidogrel absorption caused by induction of intestinal permeability glycoprotein (P-gp) expression after aspirin administration was observed in rats. This study evaluated the effect of aspirin coadministration on the pharmacokinetics/pharmacodynamics of clopidogrel in humans. A single 75-mg dose of clopidogrel was orally administered before and after 2 and 4 weeks of once-daily 100-mg aspirin administration in 18 healthy volunteers who were recruited based on CYP2C19 and PON1 genotypes. Plasma concentrations of clopidogrel and its active metabolite, H4, and relative platelet inhibition (RPI) were determined. The P-gp microRNA miR-27a increased by up to 7.67-fold (P = 0.004) and the clopidogrel area under the concentration-time curve (AUC) decreased by 14% (P > 0.05), but the AUC of H4 remained unchanged and RPI increased by up to 15% (P = 0.002) after aspirin administration. These findings indicate low-dose aspirin coadministration may decrease clopidogrel bioavailability but does not decrease its efficacy.

Abstract
UNLABELLED This study was aimed to evaluate the association between body composition and bone health. High lean mass and low fat mass have protective effects on bone health in men representative of the national population. INTRODUCTION The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between body composition (fat mass and lean mass) and bone health in men. METHODS Totally, 3,945 men (age ≥ 20 years) from the fourth Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey of 2008-2009 (KNHANES IV) were included in this study. Body composition and bone mineral densities (BMDs) were measured using dual energy X-ray absorptiometry. Osteopenia or osteoporosis was identified on the basis of the World Health Organization T-score criteria. RESULTS Multiple linear regression analyses showed that BMDs of the whole body, femoral neck, and lumbar spine were positively associated with lean mass and negatively associated with fat mass, after controlling for body weight and other potential confounders. Subjects with more fat mass or less lean mass, categorized according to quartiles of fat mass and lean mass, had higher odds of having osteopenia or osteoporosis, as shown by multivariable logistic regression (P for trend <0.001). CONCLUSIONS High lean mass and low fat mass have protective effects on bone health in a population of Korean adult men. Fat mass appears to exert a detrimental effect on BMD, in contrast with the positive weight-bearing effect. Body composition seems to be a more important determinant for bone health than simple body weight.

Abstract
The effect of conventionally applied kosher salt on the microbiological profile of posteviscerated chicken carcasses obtained from a local commercial processing facility was evaluated. The broiler carcasses were divided into treatments 1 through 8. Standard sampling methods were used to evaluate Salmonella prevalence, aerobic plate counts, coliforms, generic Escherichia coli, and psychrotroph counts. Results indicate significant reductions in microbial populations in all the salted groups compared with controls. Significant reductions (1.45, 2.31, 2.81, and 1.48 log cfu/mL of rinse) were obtained for aerobic plate count (APC), coliforms, generic E. coli, and psychrotroph counts, respectively, on prechill salt-treated carcasses compared with controls. Salt-treated carcasses sampled after chilling had lower microbial populations compared with control chilled samples with significant reductions in coliforms and generic E. coli (1.25 and 1.77 log, respectively). Salt-treated samples had lower counts on APC and psychrotrophs after 10 d of refrigerated storage compared with controls. Finally, drip loss of salt-treated carcasses was lower after 24 h compared with nontreated controls. Based on the results, it can be concluded that salting process is an effective contributor to microbial reductions during processing that needs further investigation as a possible intervention in commercial poultry processing settings.

Abstract
To minimize the amount of n-6 fatty acids in broiler chicken meat, 120 Cobb × Ross male broilers were divided into 6 different groups and fed a basal corn-soybean meal diet containing 5% fat from 5 different lipid sources: 1) a commercial mix of animal and vegetable oil, 2) soybean oil and olive oil (2.5% each), 3) flaxseed oil and olive oil (2.5% each), 4) flaxseed oil, eicosapentaenoic acid (C20:5; EPA; n-3), and olive oil (2.45, 0.05, and 2.5% respectively; FEO), 5) flaxseed oil, docosahexaenoic acid (C22:6; DHA; n-3), and olive oil (2.45, 0.05, and 2.5% respectively; FDO), and 6) fish oil and olive oil (2.5% each; FHO). At 6 and 9 wk, one bird per pen (4 pens per treatment) was processed, and liver, breast, and thigh samples were collected and used for fatty acid profiles or Δ6- and Δ9-desaturase mRNA gene expression levels. The deposition of linoleic acid (C18:2; n-6) or arachidonic acid (C20:4; n-6) was decreased in breast and thigh muscles of chickens fed n-3 fatty acids for 9 wk compared with chickens fed animal and vegetable oil and soybean oil and olive oil diets (P < 0.05). The addition of EPA to the diet (FEO; P > 0.05) did not reduce the deposition of linoleic acid and arachidonic acid as much as DHA (FDO; P < 0.05), and it suppressed the expression of Δ6- and Δ9-desaturase. When EPA and DHA were blended (FHO) and supplied to broiler chickens for 9 wk, EPA and DHA combination effects were observed on the deposition of LA and arachidonic acid in breast and thigh muscles. Thereby, the addition of a mixed EPA and DHA to a broiler chicken diet may be recommendable to reduce arachidonic acid accumulation in both broiler chicken breast and thigh meats, providing a functional broiler chicken meat to consumers.

Abstract
Oligodendrocytes generate large amounts of myelin by extension of their cell membranes. Though lipid is the major component of myelin, detailed lipid metabolism in the maintenance of myelin is not understood. We reported previously that miR-32 might be involved in myelin maintenance (Shin et al., 2009). Here we demonstrate a novel role for miR-32 in oligodendrocyte function and development through the regulation of SLC45A3 (solute carrier family 45, member 3) and other downstream targets such as CLDN-11. miR-32 is highly expressed in the myelin-enriched regions of the brain and mature oligodendrocytes, and it promotes myelin protein expression. We found that miR-32 directly regulates the expression of SLC45A3 by binding to the complementary sequence on the 3'UTR of cldn11 and slc45a3. As a myelin-enriched putative sugar transporter, SLC45A3 enhances intracellular glucose levels and the synthesis of long-chain fatty acids. Therefore, overexpression of SLC45A3 triggers neutral lipid accumulation. Interestingly, both overexpression and suppression of SLC45A3 reduces myelin protein expression in mature oligodendrocytes and alters oligodendrocyte morphology, indicating that tight regulation of SLC45A3 expression is necessary for the proper maintenance of myelin proteins and structure. Taken together, our data suggest that miR-32 and its downstream target SLC45A3 play important roles in myelin maintenance by modulating glucose and lipid metabolism and myelin protein expression in oligodendrocytes.
