Spatially resolved ultrafast magnetic dynamics initiated at a complex oxide heterointerface

Static strain in complex oxide heterostructures has been extensively used to engineer electronic and magnetic properties at equilibrium. In the same spirit, deformations of the crystal lattice with light may be used to achieve functional control across heterointerfaces dynamically. Here, by exciting large-amplitude infrared-active vibrations in a LaAlO3 substrate we induce magnetic order melting in a NdNiO3 film across a heterointerface. Femtosecond resonant soft X-ray diffraction is used to determine the spatiotemporal evolution of the magnetic disordering. We observe a magnetic melt front that propagates from the substrate interface into the film, at a speed that suggests electronically driven motion. Light control and ultrafast phase front propagation at heterointerfaces may lead to new opportunities in optomagnetism, for example by driving domain wall motion to transport information across suitably designed devices.

Suicidal ideation and suicide plans or attempts in adults with Asperger's syndrome attending a specialist diagnostic clinic: a clinical cohort study

BACKGROUND

Asperger's syndrome in adulthood is frequently associated with depression, but few studies have explored the lifetime experience of self-reported suicidal ideation and suicide plans or attempts in this clinical group. We aimed to assess this prevalence in a clinical cohort of patients in the UK.

METHOD

In a clinical cohort study, we undertook a retrospective analysis of clinical survey data from adults newly diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome at a specialist diagnostic clinic between Jan 23, 2004, and July 8, 2013, in England. Patients completed a self-report questionnaire before clinical assessment, recording lifetime experience of depression, suicidal ideation, and suicide plans or attempts, along with self-reported measures of autistic traits and empathy. We compared the rate of suicidal ideation in the sample with published rates of suicidal ideation in the general population and other clinical groups. We also assessed associations between depression, autistic traits, empathy, and likelihood of suicidal ideation and suicide plans or attempts.

FINDINGS

374 adults (256 men and 118 women) were diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome in the study period. 243 (66%) of 367 respondents self-reported suicidal ideation, 127 (35%) of 365 respondents self-reported plans or attempts at suicide, and 116 (31%) of 368 respondents self-reported depression. Adults with Asperger's syndrome were significantly more likely to report lifetime experience of suicidal ideation than were individuals from a general UK population sample (odds ratio 9·6 [95% CI 7·6-11·9], p<0·0001), people with one, two, or more medical illnesses (p<0·0001), or people with psychotic illness (p=0·019). Compared with people diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome without depression, people with Asperger's syndrome and depression were more likely to report suicidal ideation (p<0·0001) and suicide plans or attempts (p<0·0001).

INTERPRETATION

Our findings lend support to anecdotal reports of increased rates of suicidal ideation in adults with Asperger's syndrome, and depression as an important potential risk factor for suicidality in adults with this condition. Because adults with Asperger's syndrome often have many risk factors for secondary depression (eg, social isolation or exclusion, and unemployment), our findings emphasise the need for appropriate service planning and support to reduce risk in this clinical group.

Perceptions of people with multiple sclerosis on the effect and comfort of two different textured insoles: A qualitative study

Background:

People with multiple sclerosis (MS) suffer from progressive impairment of gait and balance. One of the causal factors is reduced plantar sensation. Pilot studies indicate that textured insoles may improve gait and balance by way of enhanced plantar tactile stimulation. However, no studies have reported subjective outcomes, which could provide significant information regarding the acceptance of textured insoles and their effect on psychological wellbeing. This study aimed to report the subjective experience of participants with MS when they wore insoles with two different textures.

Methods:

A within-subjects experimental design was used with two insole textures. Forty six participants were recruited (12 males, 34 females, mean age 49.1 years, SD=6.83). Participants were randomly allocated to one of the two textured insole types, which they wore for 2 weeks. They then took part in individual semi-structured interviews about their experience of wearing the insoles. Their answers were coded using thematic analysis to identify key themes.

Results:

The same themes emerged in both texture groups. Two key themes were identified: insole comfort and efficacy. Individual participants responded to the same texture in different ways; the perception of comfort was highly individual, as was insole acceptability. Perception of efficacy influenced acceptability, with participants more likely to wear the insoles if they thought they were beneficial. In several cases, confidence in mobility increased during insole use.

Conclusions:

Textured insoles have therapeutic potential in an MS population in regard to improving mobility confidence. However, their acceptability is highly individual so generalisations about their efficacy are difficult to make. Their acceptability and efficacy appear to be linked with a perception of benefit. The perception that they are beneficial encourages participants to wear the insoles and they are more likely to experience increased confidence.

Implications:

Textured insoles could provide a simple, inexpensive intervention to help people with MS maintain function and independence, thus enhancing quality of life. However, there is likely to be considerable individual variability regarding subjective outcomes.

Photoproduction of π0 mesons off neutrons in the nucleon resonance region

Precise angular distributions have been measured for the first time for the photoproduction of π0 mesons off neutrons bound in the deuteron. The effects from nuclear Fermi motion have been eliminated by a complete kinematic reconstruction of the final state. The influence of final-state-interaction effects has been estimated by a comparison of the reaction cross section for quasifree protons bound in the deuteron to the results for free protons and then applied as a correction to the quasifree neutron data. The experiment was performed at the tagged photon facility of the Mainz Microtron MAMI with the Crystal Ball and TAPS detector setup for incident photon energies between 0.45 and 1.4 GeV. The results are compared to the predictions from reaction models and partial-wave analyses based on data from other isospin channels. The model predictions show large discrepancies among each other and the present data will provide much tighter constraints. This is demonstrated by the results of a new analysis in the framework of the Bonn-Gatchina coupled-channel analysis which included the present data.

Measurement of the 1H(γ, p)π0 reaction using a novel nucleon spin polarimeter

We report the first large-acceptance measurement of polarization transfer from a polarized photon beam to a recoiling nucleon. The measurement pioneers a novel polarimetry technique, which can be applied to many other nuclear and hadron physics experiments. The commissioning reaction of 1H(γ, p)π0 in the range 0.4<Eγ<1.4  GeV validates the technique and provides essential new data to constrain the excitation spectrum of the nucleon.

Narrow structure in the excitation function of η photoproduction off the neutron

The photoproduction of η mesons off nucleons bound in 2H and 3He has been measured in coincidence with recoil protons and recoil neutrons for incident photon energies from threshold up to 1.4 GeV. The experiments were performed at the Mainz MAMI accelerator, using the Glasgow tagged photon facility. Decay photons from the η→2γ and η→3π0 decays and the recoil nucleons were detected with an almost 4π electromagnetic calorimeter combining the Crystal Ball and TAPS detectors. The data from both targets are of excellent statistical quality and show a narrow structure in the excitation function of γn→nη. The results from the two measurements are consistent, taking into account the expected effects from nuclear Fermi motion. The best estimates for position and intrinsic width of the structure are W=(1670±5)  MeV and Γ=(30±15)  MeV. For the first time precise results for the angular dependence of this structure have been extracted.

The French version of the autism-spectrum quotient in adolescents: a cross-cultural validation study

We assessed the accuracy of the French version of the Autism Spectrum Quotient (AQ) in adolescents with Asperger syndrome (AS) and high-functioning autism (HFA) compared to healthy controls and adolescents with psychiatric disorders (PDs). Three groups of adolescents, aged 11-18, were assessed: 116 with AS/HFA (93 with IQ ≥ 85 and 20 with 70 ≤ IQ < 85), 39 with other PDs, and 199 healthy controls. The AS/HFA group scored significantly higher than the healthy control and PD groups. A cut-off score of 26 was used to differentiate the autism group from healthy controls with 0.89 sensitivity and 0.98 specificity. Scores did not vary by age or sex.

Effect of textured insoles on balance and gait in people with multiple sclerosis: an exploratory trial

OBJECTIVES

To investigate the immediate effects of textured insoles on balance and gait in people with multiple sclerosis (MS), and to explore any effects after 2 weeks of wear.

STUDY DESIGN

Within-session repeated-measures design with an exploratory follow-up period.

SETTING

Hospital gait laboratory.

PARTICIPANTS

Forty-six individuals with MS (34 females, 12 males), with a mean (SD) age of 49 (7) years, who could walk 100m unassisted or using one stick/crutch.

INTERVENTION

Participants were tested wearing three types of insoles in a random order: control (smooth), Texture 1 (Algeos) or Texture 2 (Crocs™). Participants were allocated at random to wear one type of textured insoles for 2 weeks, after which they were retested.

MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES

Standing balance (centre of pressure excursions and velocity) was measured with eyes open and eyes closed on a Kistler force platform. Spatio-temporal parameters of gait were measured using a GAITRite system.

RESULTS

The textured insoles had no significant immediate effects on balance or gait, apart from an increase in anteroposterior sway range with eyes open for Texture 2 insoles [mean difference 4.5 (95% confidence interval 0.6 to 8.4)mm]. After 2 weeks, balance was not significantly different, but both types of textured insoles showed significant effects on spatio-temporal parameters of gait, with mean stride length increases of 3.5cm (Texture 1) and 5.3cm (Texture 2) when wearing the insoles.

CONCLUSIONS

After 2 weeks of wear, there were improvements in spatio-temporal parameters of gait. However, it is unclear whether this was a placebo effect or a learning effect.

Accurate test of chiral dynamics in the γp→π0p reaction

A precision measurement of the differential cross sections dσ/dΩ and the linearly polarized photon asymmetry Σ≡(dσ⊥-dσ∥)/(dσ⊥+dσ∥) for the γp→π0p reaction in the near-threshold region has been performed with a tagged photon beam and almost 4π detector at the Mainz Microtron. The Glasgow-Mainz photon tagging facility along with the Crystal Ball/TAPS multiphoton detector system and a cryogenic liquid hydrogen target were used. These data allowed for a precise determination of the energy dependence of the real parts of the S- and all three P-wave amplitudes for the first time and provide the most stringent test to date of the predictions of chiral perturbation theory and its energy region of agreement with experiment.

Genotype List String: a grammar for describing HLA and KIR genotyping results in a text string

Knowledge of an individual's human leukocyte antigen (HLA) genotype is essential for modern medical genetics, and is crucial for hematopoietic stem cell and solid-organ transplantation. However, the high levels of polymorphism known for the HLA genes make it difficult to generate an HLA genotype that unambiguously identifies the alleles that are present at a given HLA locus in an individual. For the last 20 years, the histocompatibility and immunogenetics community has recorded this HLA genotyping ambiguity using allele codes developed by the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP). While these allele codes may have been effective for recording an HLA genotyping result when initially developed, their use today results in increased ambiguity in an HLA genotype, and they are no longer suitable in the era of rapid allele discovery and ultra-high allele polymorphism. Here, we present a text string format capable of fully representing HLA genotyping results. This Genotype List (GL) String format is an extension of a proposed standard for reporting killer-cell immunoglobulin-like receptor (KIR) genotype data that can be applied to any genetic data that use a standard nomenclature for identifying variants. The GL String format uses a hierarchical set of operators to describe the relationships between alleles, lists of possible alleles, phased alleles, genotypes, lists of possible genotypes, and multilocus unphased genotypes, without losing typing information or increasing typing ambiguity. When used in concert with appropriate tools to create, exchange, and parse these strings, we anticipate that GL Strings will replace NMDP allele codes for reporting HLA genotypes.

Unintended cardiac irradiation during left-sided breast cancer radiotherapy

OBJECTIVE

Cardiac irradiation during left-sided breast radiotherapy may lead to deleterious cardiac side effects. Using image guided radiotherapy, it is possible to exclude the heart from treatment fields and monitor reproducibility of virtual simulation (VS) fields at treatment delivery using electronic portal imaging (EPI). Retrospectively, we evaluate the incidence of cardiac irradiation at VS and subsequent unintended cardiac irradiation during treatment.

METHODS

Patients receiving left-sided radiotherapy to the breast or chest wall, treated with a glancing photon field technique during a four-month period, were included. VS images and EPIs during radiotherapy delivery were visually assessed. The presence of any portion of the heart within the treatment field at VS or during treatment was recorded. Central lung distance and maximum heart distance were recorded.

RESULTS

Of 128 patients, 45 (35.1%) had any portion of the heart within the planned treatment field. Of these, inclusion of the heart was clinically unavoidable in 25 (55.6%). Of those with no heart included in the treatment fields at VS, 41 (49.4%) had presence of the heart as assessed on EPI during treatment.

CONCLUSION

Unintended cardiac irradiation during left-sided breast radiotherapy treatment occurs in a sizeable proportion of patients.

ADVANCES IN KNOWLEDGE

Despite the use of three-dimensional computed tomography simulation and cardiac shielding, sizeable proportions of patients receiving left-sided breast cancer radiotherapy have unintended cardiac irradiation.

16(th) IHIW: immunogenomic data-management methods. report from the immunogenomic data analysis working group (IDAWG)

SUMMARY

The goal of the immunogenomic data analysis working group (IDAWG) is to facilitate the consistent analysis of HLA and KIR data, and the sharing of those data among the immunogenomic and larger genomic communities. However, the data management approaches currently applied by immunogenomic researchers are not widely discussed or reported in the literature, and the effect of different approaches on data analyses is not known. With ASHI's support, the IDAWG developed a 45 question survey on HLA and KIR data generation, data management and data analysis practices. Survey questions detailed the loci genotyped, typing systems used, nomenclature versions reported, computer operating systems and software used to manage and transmit data, the approaches applied to resolve HLA ambiguity and the methods used for basic population-level analyses. Respondents were invited to demonstrate their HLA ambiguity resolution approaches in simulated data sets. By May 2012, 156 respondents from 35 nations had completed the survey. These survey respondents represent a broad sampling of the Immunogenomic community; 52% were European, 30% North American, 10% Asian, 4% South American and 4% from the Pacific. The project will continue in conjunction with the 17th Workshop, with the aim of developing community data sharing standards, ambiguity resolution documentation formats, single-task data Management tools and novel data analysis methods and applications. While additional project details and plans for the 17th IHIW will be forthcoming, we welcome the input and participation in these projects from the histocompatibility and immunogenetics community.

Pulmonary pharmacokinetics of tulathromycin in swine. Part I: Lung homogenate in healthy pigs and pigs challenged intratracheally with lipopolysaccharide of Escherichia coli

The objective of the study was to assess the pharmacokinetics of tulathromycin in lung tissue homogenate (LT) and plasma from healthy and lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-challenged pigs. Clinically healthy pigs were allocated to two dosing groups of 36 animals each (group 1 and 2). All animals were treated with tulathromycin (2.5 mg/kg). Animals in group 2 were also challenged intratracheally with LPS from Escherichia coli (LPS-Ec) 3 h prior to tulathromycin administration. Blood and LT samples were collected from all animals during 17-day post-tulathromycin administration. For LT, one sample from the middle (ML) and caudal lobes (CL) was taken. The concentration of tulathromycin was significantly lower in the ML after the intratracheal administration of LPS-E. coli (P < 0.02). In healthy pigs and LPS-challenged animals, the distribution of the drug into the lungs was rapid and persisted at high levels for 17-day postadministration. The distribution of the drug within the lung seems to be homogenous, at least between the middle and caudal lobes within dosing groups. The concentration versus time profile of the drug and pharmacokinetic parameters in two different lung areas (middle and caudal lobe) were consistent within the groups. The clinical significance of these findings is unknown.

Soft x-ray images of the laser entrance hole of ignition hohlraums

Hohlraums are employed at the national ignition facility to convert laser energy into a thermal x-radiation drive, which implodes a fusion capsule, thus compressing the fuel. The x-radiation drive is measured with a low spectral resolution, time-resolved x-ray spectrometer, which views the region around the hohlraum's laser entrance hole. This measurement has no spatial resolution. To convert this to the drive inside the hohlraum, the size of the hohlraum's opening ("clear aperture") and fraction of the measured x-radiation, which comes from this opening, must be known. The size of the clear aperture is measured with the time integrated static x-ray imager (SXI). A soft x-ray imaging channel has been added to the SXI to measure the fraction of x-radiation emitted from inside the clear aperture. A multilayer mirror plus filter selects an x-ray band centered at 870 eV, near the peak of the x-ray spectrum of a 300 eV blackbody. Results from this channel and corrections to the x-radiation drive are discussed.

Predictors of suicide-related behaviors during treatment following a first episode of psychosis: the contribution of baseline, past, and recent factors

BACKGROUND

Suicide-related behaviors (suicide attempts and suicides) are common in the early phase of psychotic disorders. Studies have examined risk factors among baseline and historical (i.e., past) variables, yet little is known about recent characteristics that increase suicide risk during treatment for first-episode psychosis (FEP). This study had two aims: first, to determine the relative importance of baseline, past, and recent variables to the prediction of suicide-related behaviors in patients with FEP; second, to identify recent characteristics that exert most influence on suicide risk levels and which could become foci of preventive interventions.

METHODS

This was a case-control study of 180 patients from a cohort entering a specialist FEP service between 1/12/2002 and 30/11/2005. Data for 72 cases and 108 matched controls were obtained via medical record audit. Multivariate logistic regression models assessed the contribution of baseline, past, and recent domains. Suicide attempt or suicide during treatment was the outcome variable.

RESULTS

The strongest risk factors for suicide-related behaviors were: baseline depressive symptoms, baseline suicidal ideation/intent, past negative events, past non-suicidal self-injurious behavior, recent negative events, recent depressive symptoms, and recent non-suicidal self-injurious behavior. However, when these were entered into a hierarchical logistic regression model, only recent non-suicidal self-injurious behavior (AOR=72.96, p<0.001), and recent negative events (AOR=1.90, p=0.003) remained significant predictors. The final model accurately classified 75.5% of cases and 89.2% of controls, and explained 72.0% of variance in the suicide attempt status.

CONCLUSIONS

Since recent negative events and recent non-suicidal self-injurious behavior were the strongest predictors of suicide-related behaviors during treatment for FEP, psychiatric services could consider incorporating psychosocial interventions addressing affect regulation, interpersonal effectiveness, stress management and problem solving, alongside case management and pharmacotherapy, to help to reduce the rates of suicide attempts and suicides in first-episode patients.

Strict X-ray beam collimation for facial bones examination can increase lens exposure

OBJECTIVES

It is well accepted that collimation is a cost-effective dose-reducing tool for X-ray examinations. This phantom-based study investigated the impact of X-ray beam collimation on radiation dose to the lenses of the eyes and thyroid along with the effect on image quality in facial bone radiography.

METHODS

A three-view series (occipitomental, occipitomental 30 and lateral) was investigated, and radiation doses to the lenses and thyroid were measured using an Unfors dosemeter. Images were assessed by six experienced observers using a visual grading analysis and a total of 5400 observations were made.

RESULTS

Strict collimation significantly (p<0.0001) reduced the radiation dose to the lenses of the eyes and thyroid when using a fixed projection-specific exposure. With a variable exposure technique (fixed exit dose, to simulate the behaviour of an automatic exposure control), while strict collimation was again shown to reduce thyroid dose, higher lens doses were demonstrated when compared with larger fields of exposure. Image quality was found to significantly improve using strict collimation, with observer preference being demonstrated using visual grading characteristic curves.

CONCLUSION

The complexities of optimising radiographic techniques have been shown and the data presented emphasise the importance of examining dose-reducing strategies in a comprehensive way.

Effects of the anti-androgen, bicalutamide, in a reduced life-cycle study with the fathead minnow (Pimephales promelas)

In support of the environmental risk assessment (ERA) of the non-steroidal anti-androgen bicalutamide, a reduced fish full life-cycle (FFLC) was conducted. The traditional FFLC is deemed to be the "gold standard" for evaluating the potential environmental impact of human pharmaceuticals, covering all life-stages and measuring long term effects. However, such studies require large numbers of animals and take considerable effort and time. The reduced FFLC, employed here, used fewer animals and was shorter in duration, yet still included sensitive life-stages and measured long term effects to provide robust information in support of the ERA for an endocrine disrupting chemical. Fathead minnows (Pimephales promelas) were held in breeding pairs and their reproductive performance assessed over 28 days. Embryos from at least two pairs per treatment were subsequently grown up until 85 days post hatch and a subset allowed to spawn to assess the developmental and reproductive effects of the parental exposure on this F1 generation. Fish were exposed in a flow-through system, at 25±1°C. Nominal (mean measured) test concentrations of bicalutamide were 0.01 (0.055), 0.10 (0.10), 1.0 (0.9), 10 (9.2) and 100 (92.1) μg L⁻¹. There were no significant effects on F0 fecundity or growth (wet weight and standard length), but a significant decrease in nuptial tubercle prominence (a secondary sexual characteristic, SSC) was observed in male fish exposed to 100 μg L⁻¹. In the F1 generation, there were no treatment-related effects on hatching success or SSC, but survival was significantly decreased in fish exposed to the top concentration (100 μg L⁻¹. In female fish, wet weight and standard length were also significantly increased at this concentration. Gonadal histopathology revealed no treatment related effects on sex ratio, sexual differentiation or sexual development. However, there was a concentration related effect on gonad lesion severity in female fish exposed to 100 μg L⁻¹ and reproduction (number of eggs spawned) was also significantly reduced in breeding groups exposed to this concentration. Taking into account these data, the overall no observed effect concentration and lowest observed effect concentration values for bicalutamide were 10 and 100 μg L⁻¹, respectively.

The predictive validity of Cluster C personality disorders on the persistence of major depression in the national epidemiologic survey on alcohol and related conditions

The present study examined the predictive validity of Cluster C personality disorders (CCPDs) on major depressive disorder (MDD), using Waves 1 and 2 of the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions (NESARC, N = 34,653; time interval equals 3 years). Multiple logistic regression analyses were utilized to compare respondents with MDD and a concurrent CCPD to those with MDD only. Findings demonstrated that individuals with MDD and a comorbid CCPD were significantly more likely than those with MDD only to have MDD at Time 2. The presence of comorbid CCPD in individuals with MDD also predicts the subsequent occurrence of suicide attempts at Time 2 and the new onset of Axis I anxiety disorders. The chronic and enduring personality styles and interpersonal difficulties that characterize individuals with a CCPD likely lead to the exacerbation of MDD symptoms. Clinicians should be aware of the impact that CCPDs have on the outcome of MDD.
