Abstract
A major concern in psychology and education is that rewards decrease intrinsic motivation to perform activities. Over the past 30 years, more than 100 experimental studies have been conducted on this topic. In 1994, Cameron and Pierce conducted a meta-analysis of this literature and concluded that negative effects of reward were limited and could be easily prevented in applied settings. A more recent meta-analysis of the literature by Deci, Koestner, and Ryan (1999) shows pervasive negative effects of reward. The purpose of the present article is to resolve differences in previous meta-analytic findings and to provide a meta-analysis of rewards and intrinsic motivation that permits tests of competing theoretical explanations. Our results suggest that in general, rewards are not harmful to motivation to perform a task. Rewards given for low-interest tasks enhance free-choice intrinsic motivation. On high-interest tasks, verbal rewards produce positive effects on free-choice motivation and self-reported task interest. Negative effects are found on high-interest tasks when the rewards are tangible, expected (offered beforehand), and loosely tied to level of performance. When rewards are linked to level of performance, measures of intrinsic motivation increase or do not differ from a nonrewarded control group. Overall, the pattern of results indicates that reward contingencies do not have pervasive negative effects on intrinsic motivation. Theoretical and practical implications of the findings are addressed.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Radiation safety principles dictate that imaging procedures should minimise the radiation risks involved, without compromising diagnostic performance. This study aims to define a core set of views that maximises clinical information yield for minimum radiation risk. Angiographers would supplement these views as clinically indicated. METHODS An algorithm was developed to combine published data detailing the quality of information derived for the major coronary artery segments through the use of a common set of views in angiography with data relating to the dose-area product and scatter radiation associated with these views. RESULTS The optimum view set for the left coronary system comprised four views: left anterior oblique (LAO) with cranial (Cr) tilt, shallow right anterior oblique (AP-RAO) with caudal (Ca) tilt, RAO with Ca tilt and AP-RAO with Cr tilt. For the right coronary system three views were identified: LAO with Cr tilt, RAO and AP-RAO with Cr tilt. An alternative left coronary view set including a left lateral achieved minimally superior efficiency (<5%), but with an ~8% higher radiation dose to the patient and 40% higher cardiologist dose. CONCLUSION This algorithm identifies a core set of angiographic views that optimises the information yield and minimises radiation risk. This basic data set would be supplemented by additional clinically determined views selected by the angiographer for each case. The decision to use additional views for diagnostic angiography and interventions would be assisted by referencing a table of relative radiation doses for the views being considered.

Abstract
Sixty-seven Holstein-Friesian cows, from 20 days postpartum, were recruited into the study and fitted with both a pedometer (SAE Afikim) and a Heatime neck collar (SCR Engineers) and allocated a heat mount detector (either scratchcard [Dairymac] or KaMaR [KaMaR]) or left with none, relying only on farm staff observation. Common production stressors and other factors were assessed to determine their impact on the ability of each method to accurately detect oestrus and to investigate effects on the frequency of false-positive detections. Only 74 per cent of all potential oestrus periods (episodes of low progesterone) were identified by combining information from all methods. There was no difference between the methods in terms of sensitivity for detecting 'true oestrus events' (approximately 60 per cent), with the exception of scratchcards, which were less efficient (36 per cent). Pedometers and KaMaRs had higher numbers of false-positive identifications. No production stressors had any consequence on false-positives. The positive predictive values for neck collars or observation by farm staff were higher than those of other methods, and combining these two methods yielded the best results. Neck collars did not detect any of the nine oestrus events occurring in three cows with a body condition score (BCS) of less than 2, and the efficiency of correctly identifying oestrus was also reduced by high milk yield (odds ratio [OR]=0.34). Pedometer efficiency was reduced by lameness, low BCS or high milk yield (OR=0.42, 0.15 or 0.30, respectively).
