Abstract
OBJECTIVES Enzymatic pancreatic injury (EPI) in abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) treatment has been scarcely studied in the literature. Aim of this work was to compare perioperative EPI in AAA patients treated by endovascular repair (EVAR) or open repair (OR). METHODS Forty AAA patients consecutively treated with either EVAR (GI, 20 pts) or OR (GII, 20 pts) were prospectively evaluated in terms of epidemiology, comorbidities and technical details. Serum levels of amylase, lipase and pancreatic isoamylase were assessed before treatment (T0), before aortic clamping/endograft deployment (T1), 1, 2, and 6 hours after aortic declamping/endograft deployment (T2, T3, T4) and 24, 48, and 72 hours after the procedure (T5, T6, T7). GI and GII were compared by Mann Whitney test with significance set at p < 0.05. RESULTS GI patients were significantly older and with higher frequency of preoperative renal insufficiency than GII ones (p = 0.001 and 0.047 respectively). Other characteristics were not significantly different. Pancreatic enzymes values at T0 were within normal parameters in all patients. Total serum amylase was significantly greater at T4 (p = 0.003), T5 (p = 0.010), T6 (p = 0.003), T7 (p = 0.011) and isoamylase at T3 (p = 0.052), T4 (p = 0.037), T5 (p = 0.016) and T6 (p = 0.014) in GII compared with GI. Amylase and isoamylase peak occurred 24 hours after the procedure. Lipase was significantly different in the two groups only in T4 (p = 0.028). No acute pancreatitis occurred in the whole study group. CONCLUSIONS EVAR significantly reduces EPI compared with OR in the AAA treatment.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to estimate genetic parameters for conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) and other selected milk fatty acid (FA) content and for unsaturation ratios in the Italian Holstein Friesian population. Furthermore, the relationship of milk FA with milk fat and protein content was considered. One morning milk sample was collected from 990 Italian Holstein Friesian cows randomly sampled from 54 half-sib families, located in 34 commercial herds in the North-eastern part of Italy. Each sample was analyzed for milk percentages of fat and protein, and for single FA percentages (computed as FA weight as a proportion of total fat weight). Heritabilities were moderate for unsaturated FA, ranging from 0.14 for C16:1 to 0.19 for C14:1. Less than 10% of heritability was estimated for each saturated FA content. Heritability for index of desaturation, monounsaturated FA and CLA/trans-11 18:1 ratio were 0.15, 0.14, and 0.15, respectively. Standard errors of the heritability values ranged from 0.02 to 0.06. Genetic correlations were high and negative between C16:0 and C18:0, as well as between C14:0 and C18:0. Genetic correlations of index of desaturation were high and negative with C14:0 and C16:0 (-0.70 and -0.72, respectively), and close to zero (0.03) with C18:0. The genetic correlation of C16:0 with fat percentage was positive (0.74), implying that selection for fat percentage should result in a correlated increase of C16:0, whereas trans-11 C18:1 and cis-9, trans-11 C18:2 contents decreased with increasing fat percentage (-0.69 and -0.55, respectively). Genetic correlations of fat percentage with 14:1/14 and 16:1/16 ratios were positive, whereas genetic correlations of fat percentage with 18:1/18 and CLA/trans-11 18:1 ratios were negative. These results suggest that it is possible to change the milk FA composition by genetic selection, which offers opportunities to meet consumer demands regarding health aspects of milk and dairy products.

Abstract
Many of the important diseases of sport and pleasure horses are thought to have a genetic component. The majority of these diseases, however, are multifactorial and are influenced not only by genetics, but also by environmental factors. In this review some of the most important multifactorial diseases are described and the current evidence for a genetic background is discussed.

Abstract
Milk fatty acid composition is a parameter of great interest for evaluation of nutritional quality of milk. Stearoyl-CoA desaturase (SCD) is a key enzyme in mammary lipid metabolism because it is able to add a double bond in the cis delta9-position in a large spectrum of medium- and long-chain fatty acids. A polymorphism with 2 alleles (A and V) in the fifth exon of the SCD gene has been reported. The effect of SCD genotype on individual milk fatty acid composition and on cis-9 unsaturated/saturated fatty acid ratios of 297 Holstein Italian Friesian cows was investigated in this paper. The SCD genotypes were determined by using a single strand conformation polymorphism method. Relative frequencies of SCD genotypes were 27, 60, and 13% for AA, AV, and VV, respectively. Milk of AA cows had a greater content of cis-9 C18:1 and total monounsaturated fatty acids and a higher C14:1/C14 ratio than did milk of VV cows. The relative contribution of SCD genotype to variation of monounsaturated fatty acids, cis-9 C18:1, and cis-9 C14:1 was 5, 4, and 7.7%, respectively. No significant differences were detected between SCD genotypes in the milk content of cis-9, trans-11 C18:2. Results of the present work provide some indication of an association between SCD locus and the fatty acid profile in the examined sample of Italian Holsteins, thus suggesting a possible role of this gene in the genetic variation of milk nutritional properties.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to investigate clinical signs indicating diseases with known or suspected hereditary components like equine sarcoid, insect bite hypersensitivity, osteochondrosis, allergic airway diseases, podotrochleosis, prognatism and wind-sucking in the franches-montagnes horse. We performed a clinical examination on 702 three-year-old, privately owned franches-montagnes horses, which were shown at the Swiss-Field-Tests in 2004. With the help of the owners a questionnaire on health, environment and feeding habits of the animals was completed. In 11.9% of the horses, sarcoids were detected, 6.2% carried one tumor and 5.7% had several. The prevalence was higher in chestnuts (16.6%) than in bays (10.1%). The prevalence of sarcoids in offspring from sires with known sarcoids (data from Station-Tests 1994-2005) was not significantly higher than in descendants from stallions without a known history of sarcoids. Clinical signs of insect bite hypersensitivity were only found in six horses (0.9%). In 12.0% hoof abnormalities like brittle horn, ring hoofs or hoof cracks of different degrees were recorded. The angle between hoof base and hoof wall was 56.7 +/- 0.1 degrees, the average hoof width was 13.7 +/- 0.3 cm in the front feet. For both of these measures we found no significant difference between left and right feet. With the exception of a high sarcoid prevalence, our results indicate that the franches-montagnes horse is a healthy breed overall.

Abstract
The detection of markers of identification of the geographical origin of food is an attractive challenge and, as far as dairy products are concerned, this paper represents a contribution to this field. In this research the influence of feed on the volatile compound composition was investigated on milk, 2-mo-old cheese (Caciotta), and whey cheese (ricotta) obtained from the same flock of Sarda ewes, under standardized technological conditions. Three different types of pasture (mixture of Lolium perenne and Trifolium squarrosum; rough pasture; Avena sativa) were studied. Solid-phase microextraction combined with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry was used and principal component analysis was applied for statistical evaluation of the data set. The volatile composition was significantly affected by the type of pasture independently of the type of cheese and the ripening period. Moreover, a marker of rough pasture, tentatively identified as (E,E)-3,7,11-tri-methyl-2,4,10-dodecatriene, was detected only in milk and cheeses produced when the ewe flock grazed on that pasture.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to investigate the association between dementia and mortality in an elderly Italian population. Demented subjects were identified by a previous prevalence study of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and specific dementing disorders. The study sample included all inhabitants of Appignano aged 60 and over (778 subjects), and was followed-up over a period of about 7 years. Periodic records of dates of death were obtained from the Registry Office of Appignano. We found considerably higher mortality ratios for subjects previously diagnosed as having dementia syndrome (12.5% at 1 year and 81.3% at about 7 years) than for those who were non-demented (3.0% at 1 year and 21.5% at about 7 years). In the group of demented subjects (N = 48), we also investigated the influence of sex, age, and specific dementing disorders on mortality ratios. The percentage of demented subjects who died during the whole period of follow-up was higher among men than women (100% vs. 66.7%) and increased considerably with increasing age (50.0% for age class 60-69, 76.5% for age class 70-79, and 86.2% for age class 80+). Mortality of subjects with multi-infarct dementia (MID) and mixed dementia (MD) tended to be slightly higher than in subjects affected by AD. Our results are consistent with those reported in previous population-based studies on survival of dementia patients.
