Abstract
Objective: To investigate the effects of crystalline silica with different exposure patterns on lung fibrosis in rats. Methods: A total of 20 adult male Wistar rats were randomly divided into 4 groups consisting of five animals each and received intratracheal instillation of sterile saline or silica suspension in different patterns: saline once at day 0, saline once/week, crystalline silica 50 mg at day 0, crystalline silica 6.25 mg/week. The rats were sacrificed at 8 weeks. The lung tissues were collected for pathological analyses, and determining mRNA and protein levels of related fibrogenic molecules. Results: The collagen deposition induced by crystalline silica in lung tissues were increased. The mRNA levels of IL-1β and Col I in group c were significantly elevated than those in group saline once at day 0 (all P<0.05). Compared with group saline once/week, the mRNA levels of IL-1β, TGF-β, Col I, Col III and CTGF were significantly increased in group crystalline silica 6.25 mg/week (P<0.05) . The mRNA levels of Col I and CTGF were significantly increased in group crystalline silica 6.25 mg/week in comparison with those in group crystalline silica 50 mg at day 0 (P<0.05) . Conclusion: Given the same cumulative dose of crystalline silica, multiple exposures were likely to induce more severe lung fibrosis.

Abstract
There is no consensus about factors that increase risk of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) among patients with chronic hepatitis B who have achieved seroclearance of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg). To assess the available evidence about risk factors for HCC after HBsAg seroclearance, Scopus, EMBASE, PubMed and Cochrane Library databases were systematically searched for relevant studies published through 15 September 2017. A total of 28 studies involving more than 105 411 patients with chronic hepatitis B were included. HBsAg seroclearance occurred spontaneously in 7656, while it occurred after interferon or nucleos(t)ide analogue therapy in 1248. The rate of HBsAg seroclearance was 6.77%. Incidence of HCC was significantly lower among patients who experienced HBsAg seroclearance than among those who remained HBsAg-positive (1.86% vs 6.56%, P < .001). Risk factors of HCC occurrence included cirrhosis (incidence with vs without: 9.51% vs 1.66%), male gender (2.34% vs 0.64%) and age ≥ 50 year at HBsAg seroclearance (2.34% vs 0.63%) (all P < .001). The available evidence suggests that HCC can develop at a low rate after HBsAg seroclearance, so periodic surveillance is recommended, especially for male patients, patients with cirrhosis and patients who experience HBsAg seroclearance when at least 50 years old.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To establish regression models of stature estimation for Sichuan Han female by the measurement of total vertebral column length in the frontal and lateral X-ray films of whole-spine. METHODS The frontal and lateral X-ray films of whole-spine were collected from 200 Sichuan Han females by large flat-panel multi-functional universal radiography and fluoroscopy system. The data and mean values of frontal and lateral total vertebral column length were measured and calculated in all the samples, respectively. The relationship of combined multi-markers and stature were analysed by linear regression analysis, and the mathematical models of stature estimation were established. The data of 30 new samples were selected and inputted for verifying the accuracy of the mathematical models. RESULTS The total vertebral column length showed a good correlation with stature, and the mean values of the frontal and lateral X-ray films of total vertebral column length had the highest correlation coefficients. Three established linear regression equation models were statistically significant (P<0.05), and the equation established with lateral total vertebral column length showed the highest accuracy. CONCLUSIONS The stature estimation by the measurement of total vertebral column length has high accuracy.

Abstract
Analysis and design of materials and fluids requires understanding of the fundamental relationships between structure, composition, and properties. Dislocations and grain boundaries influence microstructure evolution through the enhancement of diffusion and by facilitating heterogeneous nucleation, where atoms must overcome a potential barrier to enable the early stage of formation of a phase. Adsorption and spinodal decomposition are known precursor states to nucleation and phase transition; however, nucleation remains the less well-understood step in the complete thermodynamic sequence that shapes a microstructure. Here, we report near-atomic-scale observations of a phase transition mechanism that consists in solute adsorption to crystalline defects followed by linear and planar spinodal fluctuations in an Fe-Mn model alloy. These fluctuations provide a pathway for austenite nucleation due to the higher driving force for phase transition in the solute-rich regions. Our observations are supported by thermodynamic calculations, which predict the possibility of spinodal decomposition due to magnetic ordering. Solid-state phase transitions often involve nucleation of the new phase on defects but a detailed mechanistic understanding has not been established. Here the authors observe spinodal fluctuations at dislocations and grain boundaries in an iron alloy, which may be precursors in a multistep nucleation process.

Abstract
In this study, a rapid and specific assay for the detection of porcine circovirus type 3 (PCV3) was established using loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP). Four primers were specifically designed to amplify PCV3. The LAMP assay was effectively optimized to amplify PCV3 by water bath at 60°C for 60 min. The detection limit was approximately 1 × 101 copy in this LAMP assay. Compared to porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2), both gE and gD genes of pseudorabies virus (PRV) and porcine parvovirus (PPV), the LAMP assay showed a high specific detection of PCV3. A visible detection method was developed using SYBR Green I to recognize the results rapidly. Based on the detection of 20 clinical tissue samples, the LAMP assay was more practical and convenient than classical PCR due to its simplicity, high sensitivity, rapidity, specificity, visibility and cost efficiency.

Abstract
Objective: To summarize the clinical characteristics and therapeutic experiences of the middle ear teratoma in infants. Methods: Three cases of middle ear teratoma, from 2012-2015 in Beijing Friendship Hospital were analyzed. Results: The three cases all developed slowly and presented unilateral otorrhea and hearing loss. Otoscopy showed the granulation tissue in the external ear canal. Audiological changes varied according to the degree of severity. Imaging features showed the pocket-like occupancy lesions in the Eustachian tube area. The temporal bone CT showed mass with soft tissue density usually involved in the mastoid and tympanic cavity. MRI showed mixed signal intense on both T1 and T2 weighted imaging. All the three cases received neoplasm resection of the middle ear. Only one case received tympanoplasty surgery at the same time. And all the pathology results displayed mature teratoma. The follow-up time was 17 to 54 months. MRI showed complete removal of the tumor. Conclusions: Teratoma are rare in the head and neck neoplasm. When the infants suffer from the unilateral otorrhea, hearing loss, and granulation tissue formed in the external ear canal, it should be vigilant for teratoma. The differential diagnosis is middle ear cholesteatoma, congenital first branchial cyst or fistula, and middle ear carcinoma. Temporal bone CT combined with MRI could improve the accuracy of diagnosis. It should be totally resection as soon as possible if there is no contraindication. Postoperative follow-up and imaging examination are necessary to eliminate tumor recurrence.

Abstract
In this study, the co-infection of Torque teno sus virus (TTSuV) and porcine circovirus type 3 (PCV3) was reported. One hundred and ten of 132 (83.3%) PCV3-positive samples were co-infected with Torque teno sus virus 1 (TTSuV1). Ninety-four of 132 (71.2%) PCV3-positive samples were co-infected with Torque teno sus virus 2 (TTSuV2). Sixty-six of 132 (50.0%) of PCV3-positive samples were co-infected with both TTSuV1 and TTSuV2. There were no clinical signs of infection in pigs that were both PCV3-positive and PCV2-negative, in either multiparous sows or live-born infants. The high co-infection rate provides valuable information for the further study of the pathological correlation between PCV3 and TTSuVs.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the effects of general conditions and past medical history of patients on the short-term pacing threshold after the implantation of active electrodes of a cardiac pacemaker, and to understand whether the application of active electrodes will cause muscle injury and the severity of the injury. PATIENTS AND METHODS A total of 156 patients who were treated with a cardiac pacemaker and implanted with single or double active electrodes in Cardiovascular Department of Central Hospital of Jiangjin District were enrolled, including 96 patients treated with a single active electrode and 60 patients treated with double active electrodes. Their clinical data were collected. During operation, the short-term atrial and ventricular pacing thresholds were monitored and recorded after the implantation of the active fixed electrode lead. RESULTS Multivariate Logistic regression analysis showed that female sex, age, smoking, drinking, coronary heart disease, diabetes mellitus and hyperlipidemia had effects on pacing thresholds in a short-term to some extent after the implantation of active fixed electrode lead of cardiac pacemaker. The levels of myocardial enzymes, myoglobin (MYO), creatine kinase (CK), creatine kinase-MB (CK-MB), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and cardiac troponin I (cTNI), in patients were gradually increased after the implantation of active fixed electrode lead and reached the peak at 24 h, which were higher than those before operation (p < 0.05). The levels were decreased at 72 h with statistically significant differences. CONCLUSIONS Female sex, age, smoking, drinking, coronary heart disease, diabetes mellitus and hyperlipidemia are independent influencing factors of pacing thresholds in a short term after the implantation of active fixed electrode lead of cardiac pacemaker. The implantation of active electrodes can raise the myocardial enzyme indexes compared with those before operation, but will fall to the preoperative levels or normal, near normal levels at 72 h after operation. The implantation of active electrodes is safe and feasible for myocardial tissues.

Abstract
Nanomolar intravascular concentrations of drag-reducing polymers (DRP) have been shown to improve hemodynamics and survival in animal models of ischemic myocardium and limb, but the effects of DRP on the cerebral microcirculation have not yet been studied. We recently demonstrated that DRP enhance microvascular flow in normal rat brain and hypothesized that it would restore impaired microvascular perfusion and improve outcomes after focal ischemia and traumatic brain injury (TBI). We studied the effects of DRP (high molecular weight polyethylene oxide, 4000 kDa, i.v. at 2 μg/mL of blood) on microcirculation of the rat brain: (1) after permanent middle cerebral artery occlusion (pMCAO); and (2) after TBI induced by fluid percussion. Using in vivo two-photon laser scanning microscopy (2PLSM) over the parietal cortex of anesthetized rats we showed that both pMCAO and TBI resulted in progressive decrease in microvascular circulation, leading to tissue hypoxia (NADH increase) and increased blood brain barrier (BBB) degradation. DRP, injected post insult, increased blood volume flow in arterioles and red blood cell (RBC) flow velocity in capillaries mitigating capillary stasis, tissue hypoxia and BBB degradation, which improved neuronal survival (Fluoro-Jade B, 24 h) and neurologic outcome (Rotarod, 1 week). Improved microvascular perfusion by DRP may be effective in the treatment of ischemic stroke and TBI.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Hepatitis B virus X protein (HBx), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and carcinoembryonic antigen related cell adhesion molecule 1 (CEACAM1), are related to HBV associated hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). This study recruited HCC patients and employed the SMMC-7721 and L02 liver cell lines, to analyze the expression levels of HBx, VEGF and CEACAM1 in liver cancer and their correlation with the cancer prognosis. PATIENTS AND METHODS HBV-related HCC patients were recruited from our hospital. Immunohistochemistry (IHC) and Western blotting assay were used to detect the expression of HBx, VEGF and CEACAM1 in liver tissues. Multi-variant analysis and the correlation analysis between HBx, VEGF, CEACAM1 expression and clinical/pathological features of HCC were performed by using the Cox regression analysis. RESULTS In HBV-related HCC tissues, positive expression rates of HBx, CEACAM1, and VEGF, were 80%, 50%, and 65%, respectively. In HBx-positive group, positive rate for CEACAM1 and VEGF were 56.25% and 75%, while in HBx-negative group such figures were 75% and 25% (p<0.05). HCC cells had lower expression of CEACAM1 and higher VEGF levels compared to normal hepatocytes. Those HCC cells transfected with HBx had even lower CEACAM1 and higher VEGF levels compared to un-transfected cells. HBx was negatively correlated with CEACAM1 and positively correlated with VEGF. Expressions of these three factors were all independent risk factors as they were correlated with lesion size, venous infiltration, metastasis, and capsule. CONCLUSIONS HBx, VEGF and CEACAM1 were widely expressed in HBV-related HCC. HBx may facilitate occurrence and progression of HBV-related HCC via down-regulating CEACAM1 and up-regulating VEGF.

Abstract
Hyperbaric oxygen preconditioning (HBO-PC) has been proposed as a safe and practical approach for neuroprotection in ischemic stroke. However, it is not known whether HPO-PC can improve cognitive deficits induced by cerebral ischemia, and the mechanistic basis for any beneficial effects remains unclear. We addressed this in the present study using rats subjected to middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO) as an ischemic stroke model following HBO-PC. Cognitive function and expression of phosphorylated neurofilament heavy polypeptide (pNF-H) and doublecortin (DCX) in the hippocampus were evaluated 14 days after reperfusion and after short interfering RNA-mediated knockdown of sirtuin1 (Sirt1). HBO-PC increased pNF-H and DCX expression and mitigated cognitive deficits in MCAO rats. However, these effects were abolished by Sirt1 knockdown. Our results suggest that HBO-PC can protect the brain from injury caused by ischemia-reperfusion and that Sirt1 is a potential molecular target for therapeutic approaches designed to minimize cognitive deficits caused by cerebral ischemia.

Abstract
The attachment of cell-surface carbohydrates to proteins mediated by the amino acids serine or threonine (O-glycan) is involved in tumor metastasis; the roles of O-glycans vary depending on their structure, but the detailed mechanisms by which O-glycans trigger signaling to control tumor metastasis are largely unknown. In this study, we found that the reduced expression of core 3 synthase correlated with metastasis to lymph nodes and distant organs, resulting in poor prognosis for colorectal cancer (CRC) patients. Mechanically, we revealed that mucin-type core 3 O-glycan was synthesized at the membrane-tethered MUC1 N terminus because of core 3 synthase expression in colon cancer cells. This further inhibited the translocation of MUC1-C to the nucleus, initiated p53 gene transcription that was dependent on the inhibition of MUC1-C nucleus translocation, activated p53-mediated miR-200c expression and resulted in mesenchymal-epithelial transition (MET). Inhibition of MUC1 via small interfering RNA (siRNA) in re-expressed core 3 synthase colon cancer cells further inhibited MUC1-C nucleus translocation, increased p53 and miR-200c expression, and enhanced MET. However, inhibition of p53 via siRNA or miR-200c via miR-200c inhibitor in re-expressed core 3 synthase colon cancer cells promoted the epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) in a reversible manner. Core 3 synthase mRNA levels and the p53 mRNA levels or miR-200c levels in the colon cancerous samples were positively correlated. Our findings suggest a novel mechanism linking mucin-type core 3 O-glycan to the EMT-MET plasticity of CRC cells via MUC1/p53/miR-200c-dependent signaling cascade and shed light on therapeutic strategies to treat this malignancy.

Abstract
Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is one of the most aggressive urologic cancers, however, the mechanism on supporting RCC carcinogenesis is still not clear. By using gene expression profile analysis and functional clustering, PDZ domain-containing 1 (PDZK1) was revealed to be downregulated in human clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) samples, which was also verified in several independent public ccRCC data sets. Using PDZK1 overexpression and knockdown models in ccRCC cell lines, we demonstrated that PDZK1 inhibited cell proliferation, cell cycle G1/S phase transition, cell migration and invasion, indicating a tumor-suppressor role in the development and progression of ccRCC. Our study further demonstrated that PDZK1 inhibited cell proliferation and migration of ccRCC via targeting SHP-1. PDZK1 was further identified to suppress cell proliferation by blocking SHP-1 phosphorylation at Tyr536 via inhibition of the association between SHP-1 and PLCβ3, and then retarding Akt phosphorylation and promoting STAT5 phosphorylation in ccRCC cells. Moreover, the inhibitive effects of PDZK1 on SHP-1 phosphorylation and the tumor growth were verified in vivo by xenograft tumor studies. Accordingly, PDZK1 expression was negatively correlated with SHP-1 activation and phosphorylation, advanced pathologic stage, tumor weight and size, and prognosis of ccRCC patients. These findings have provided first lines of evidences that PDZK1 expression is negatively correlated with SHP-1 activation and poor clinical outcomes in ccRCC. PDZK1 was identified as a novel tumor suppressor in ccRCC by negating SHP-1 activity.

Abstract
Porcine circovirus type 3 (PCV3) was detected in Shandong, China. One hundred and thirty‐two of 222 (59.46%) samples were PCV3 positive, while 52 of 132 (39.39%) samples were co‐infected with PCV2. There were no clinical signs of infection in either multiparous sows or live‐born infants. Two strains of PCV3 were indentified from natural stillborn foetuses. Phylogenetic analysis showed the two strains of PCV3 are 96% identical to the known PCV3/Pig/USA (KX778720.1, KX966193.1 and KX898030.1) and closely related to Barbel Circovirus. Further studies of the epidemiology of PCV3 and the co‐infection with PCV2 are needed.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To study the survival situation of gastric cancer patients with pathological complete response (pCR)following neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC). METHODS The clinical data of patients with gastric cancer treated with NAC following by surgical resection between Jan 2011 and Dec 2013 at General Hospital of Chinese People's Liberation Army was analyzed retrospectively. RESULTS A total of 23 patients (16.0%, 23/144)achieved pathologic complete response. The median follow-up time of the survivors was 42.8 (range 16.0-58.7)months. All patients underwent R0 resection and D2 lymphadenectomy. The overall survival and recurrence-free survival rates at 3 years were 95.7% and 90.3%. CONCLUSIONS The patients with advanced gastric cancer after neoadjuvant chemotherapy have good prognosis. Modified chemotherapy regimens may further improve the pathological complete response rate.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of the suspended carcass deboning technique on the meat attributes of electrically stimulated cattle ( = 10). A carcass deboning technique that removes the main bones without breakdown of the entire carcass was applied to suspended sides soon after slaughter. After 3 d of aging at 4°C, the shear force of the rectus femoris, longissimus lumborum, and supraspinatus muscles of the suspended carcass deboning technique was reduced by 27%, 29%, and 23% ( < 0.05), respectively. The carcass deboning technique increased the sarcomere length by 14%, 10%, and 16% ( < 0.05), and the myofibril fragmentation index was increased by 10%, 5%, and 13% ( < 0.05), respectively, for the same 3 muscles. There was no difference in the pH, color, or cooking loss between the treatment and the control ( > 0.05). The carcass deboning technique could be a viable approach to improve beef tenderness with a relatively short aging duration.
