Abstract
OBJECTIVES In our previous research, we have developed a new combination disinfectant, glutaraldehyde-didecyldimethylammonium bromide (GD). It was verified that GD had a strong effect on both Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. In this work, Candida albicans was selected as an object, and it could be killed by GD. We aimed to investigate the cellular and molecular mechanism of GD effecting on C. albicans. METHODS AND RESULTS The results of sterilization experiment indicated that GD was effective on C. albicans. Flow cytometry and atomic absorption spectrometry were applied to detect cell membrane damage of C. albicans. Luciferase reaction and Bradford method were carried out to detect ATP content and protein quantitation. Transmission electron microscopy was used for intracellular organelles morphological observation. In order to study changes in mitochondrial membrane potential, Rh 123 was used as an indicator. DNA conformation analysis was performed by molecular modelling and circular dichroism. The results indicated that membrane permeability was increased rapidly owing to GD effect, and the leaked K+ and Mg2+ were about 12·1 and 12·4 times those of the control, respectively, at 10 min after GD treatment. Simultaneously, ATP and protein also leaked rapidly out of the cell. Mitochondrial membrane potential was destroyed, succinic dehydrogenase activity was significantly decreased and DNA conformation was changed because of GD action. CONCLUSIONS Glutaraldehyde-didecyldimethylammonium bromide disinfected C. albicans through distorting cell membrane integrity and permeability, disturbing the intracellular homeostasis by intracellular substances leakage, especially K+ , Mg2+ , ATP and protein, causing electrolyte imbalance of mitochondria, changing DNA structure, which finally led to cell death. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY This study focused on the cellular and molecular mechanism of GD as a disinfectant against C. albicans. It is important to provide theoretical support to GD against Candida albicans in practical application.

Abstract
Circular RNAs (circRNAs) are a new class of RNAs that can be used as biomarkers in clinical blood samples. However, little is known about circRNAs' diagnostic values for rheumatoid arthritis (RA). In this study, the hsa_circ_0054189, hsa_circ_0008675, hsa_circ_0082689, hsa_circ_0082688, hsa_circ_0010932, hsa_circ_0002473 and hsa_circ_0044235 in peripheral blood were determined by quantitative reverse transcription–polymerase chain reaction (qRT–PCR). For hsa_circ_0044235, only one abnormal expression circRNAs in peripheral blood was selected as a targeted circRNA to explore the diagnostic value for RA. Our work demonstrated that the hsa_circ_0044235 in peripheral blood was decreased significantly in RA patients. The hsa_circ_0044235 in peripheral blood from RA patients did not correlate with C‐reactive protein (CRP), erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), rheumatoid factor (RF), anti‐citrullinated protein antibodies (ACPA) or disease activity score 28 (DAS28). Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis suggested that the hsa_circ_0044235 in peripheral blood has significant value in the diagnosis of RA. The risk score based on hsa_circ_0044235 in peripheral blood also distinguished significantly the patients with RA from systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). This study suggests that the hsa_circ_0044235 in peripheral blood may be a potential biomarker of patients with RA.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A growing number of studies have suggested that the single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) rs662 (G>A) in paraoxonase 1 (PON1) is significantly associated with susceptibility to coronary heart disease (CHD) in the Chinese population. To further evaluate the effects of the PON1 RS662 (G>A) polymorphism on the risk of CHD, we performed a meta-analysis in a Chinese population. METHODS PubMed, Embase, Wanfang Data, Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) were searched to identify eligible studies. Pooled odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were used to evaluate the strength of the associations between RS662 (G>A) and CHD. RESULT In the meta-analysis, we identified 14 articles, including a total of 4835 CHD patients and 5111 controls in the Chinese population. Our result showed that overall rs662 (G>A) was significantly associated with susceptibility to CHD in the Chinese population when compared with healthy controls. Furthermore, a G allele suggested an elevated risk of CHD. In the subgroup analyses stratified by ethnicity and geographic areas, significant associations were found in Chinese Han and South China, but not in North China. CONCLUSION The present meta-analysis suggests that rs662 (G>A) SNP in PON1 is associated with CHD risk; the G allele might be the risk allele for CHD susceptibility in the Chinese population. However, more research is required to make a definite conclusion.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS)-guided fine needles with side fenestrations are used to collect aspirates for cytology analysis and biopsy samples for histologic analysis. We conducted a large, multicenter study to compare the accuracy of diagnosis via specimens collected with fine-needle biopsy (FNB) versus fine-needle aspiration (FNA) for patients with pancreatic and nonpancreatic masses. METHODS We performed a prospective single-blind study at 5 tertiary care centers in China. The study comprised 408 patients undergoing EUS for a solid mass (>1 cm) in the pancreas, abdomen, mediastinum, or pelvic cavity, from December 2014 through January 2016. Patients were randomly assigned to groups (1:1) for assessment by FNA (n = 190) or FNB (n = 187). After lesions were identified by EUS, samples were collected in a total of 4 passes by each needle. All procedures were performed by experienced endosonographers; cytologists and pathologists were blinded to the sample collection method. Patients were followed for at least 48 weeks, and final diagnoses were obtained after surgery, imaging analysis, or resolution of lesion. The primary aim was to compare diagnostic yields of EUS-FNA with EUS-FNB for all solid masses, then separately as pancreatic and nonpancreatic masses. The secondary endpoint was the quality of histologic specimen. RESULTS Findings from FNB analysis were accurate for 91.44% of all cases, compared with 80.00% for all FNA cases, based on final patient diagnoses (P = .0015). In patients with pancreatic masses (n = 249), findings from histologic analysis of FNBs were accurate for 92.68% of the cases, compared with 81.75% for FNAs (P = .0099). In cytology analysis of pancreatic masses, samples collected by FNB accurately identified 88.62% of all pancreatic lesions, whereas samples collected by FNA accurately identified 79.37% (P = .00468). Analyses of samples of nonpancreatic masses collected by FNA versus FNB produced similar diagnostic yields. CONCLUSIONS In a prospective study of patients with pancreatic masses, we found EUS-guided FNB samples to produce more accurate diagnoses than samples collected by EUS-guided FNA samples. No difference in diagnostic yield was seen between EUS-FNA and EUS-FNB for nonpancreatic masses. Clinical Trials.gov no: NCT02327065.

Abstract
Pressure technique is an effective way to modify magnetic properties of diluted magnetic semiconductors (DMS). Based on single crystal, in-plane electrical transport properties of a new generation DMS (Ba0.904K0.096)(Zn0.805Mn0.195)2As2 have been measured with hydrostatic pressure up to 1.8 GPa. Magnetic properties of the single crystal sample are effectively tuned by pressure. Upon compression, the in-plane resistivity initially decreases but then increases when pressure is higher than 1.2 GPa. First principle calculations suggest that decrease of the resistivity is due to enhancement of density of state at Femi energy while increase of the resistivity under higher pressure is caused by distorted MnAs4 tetrahedra. We reveal that the configuration of the MnAs4 tetrahedra and strength of interlayer As-As bonding are of importance to ferromagnetic coupling of (Ba,K)(Zn,Mn)2As2.

Abstract
A major challenge in systems biology is to infer the parameters of regulatory networks that operate in a noisy environment, such as in a single cell. In a stochastic regime it is hard to distinguish noise from the real signal and to infer the noise contribution to the dynamical behavior. When the genetic network displays oscillatory dynamics, it is even harder to infer the parameters that produce the oscillations. To address this issue we introduce a new estimation method built on a combination of stochastic simulations, mass action kinetics and ensemble network simulations in which we match the average periodogram and phase of the model to that of the data. The method is relatively fast (compared to Metropolis-Hastings Monte Carlo Methods), easy to parallelize, applicable to large oscillatory networks and large (~2000 cells) single cell expression data sets, and it quantifies the noise impact on the observed dynamics. Standard errors of estimated rate coefficients are typically two orders of magnitude smaller than the mean from single cell experiments with on the order of ~1000 cells. We also provide a method to assess the goodness of fit of the stochastic network using the Hilbert phase of single cells. An analysis of phase departures from the null model with no communication between cells is consistent with a hypothesis of Stochastic Resonance describing single cell oscillators. Stochastic Resonance provides a physical mechanism whereby intracellular noise plays a positive role in establishing oscillatory behavior, but may require model parameters, such as rate coefficients, that differ substantially from those extracted at the macroscopic level from measurements on populations of millions of communicating, synchronized cells.

Abstract
Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) have been not only a diagnostic tool, but also available in interventional therapy, which often previously needed surgical approaches to achieve. The study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of EUS-guided Nd:YAG laser ablation in unresectable tumors of the caudate lobe and left liver. We discussed ten cases of the caudate lobe and left liver tumors underwent laser ablation with EUS guidance. And we also have reviewed previous publication of EUS-guided thermal ablation for liver tumors in several decade years. EUS-guided Nd:YAG laser ablation (LA) of these tumors were successfully completed in ten patients, who had favourable prognosis with no complications in two-month follow-up. Based on our early observations, this suggested that EUS-guided LA might be technically feasible in selected patients with tumors of the caudate lobe and left liver. However, the safety of this technique need to be further confirmed in the future and if possible larger, prospective trials.

Abstract
Objective: To investigate the value of bedside echocardiography in diagnosis and risk assessment of in-hospital death of patients with Stanford type A aortic dissection. Methods: The clinical data of 229 patients with Stanford type A aortic dissection diagnosed by CT angiography in Zhongshan Hospital affiliated to Fudan University between January 2009 and January 2016 were retrospectively analyzed. The patients were divided into survival group(191 cases)and non-survival group(38 cases)according to presence or absence of in-hospital death. The bedside echocardiography features were analyzed, and influence factors of in-hospital death were determined by multivariate logistic regression analysis. Results: (1) Compared with the survival group, the non-survival group had lower surgery rate (60.52%(23/38) vs. 85.34%(163/191), P<0.01). Age, gender and Debakey classification were similar between survival group and death group (all P>0.05). (2) The bedside echocardiography results showed that prevalence of aortic valve involvement(65.79%(25/38) vs.34.03%(65/191), P<0.01) and severe aortic regurgitation (44.74%(17/38) vs. 14.14%(27/191), P<0.01) were significantly higher in non-survival group than in survival group. The non-survival group had larger aortic root diameter than the survival group ((55.5±6.4)mm vs. (42.3±7.8)mm, P<0.01). There were no significant differences in pericardial effusion, expansion of aortic sinus, and left ventricular ejection fraction between survival group and non-survival group (all P>0.05). (3) The multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that aortic valve involvement(OR=3.275, 95%CI 1.290-8.313, P<0.05), aortic root diameter(OR=1.202, 95%CI 1.134-1.275, P<0.01), and surgery (OR=0.224, 95%CI 0.079-0.629, P<0.01) were independent risk factors for in-hospital death in patients with Stanford type A aortic dissection. Conclusions: Bedside echocardiography has significant diagnostic value for Stanford type A aortic dissection. Aortic valve involvement, enlargement of aortic root diameter and without surgery are independent risk factors for patients with Stanford type A aortic dissection.

Abstract
Recently a new diluted magnetic semiconductor, (Ba,K)(Zn,Mn)2As2 (BZA), with high Curie temperature was discovered, showing an independent spin and charge-doping mechanism. This makes BZA a promising material for spintronics devices. We report the successful growth of a BZA single crystal for the first time in this study. An Andreev reflection junction, which can be used to evaluate spin polarization, was fabricated based on the BZA single crystal. A 66% spin polarization of the BZA single crystal was obtained by Andreev reflection spectroscopy analysis.

Abstract
PURPOSE The efficacy and safety of sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT) in house dust mite-induced allergic asthma (AA) have yet to be firmly established, especially in adult patients. Our objective is to evaluate the efficacy of SLIT with Dermatophagoides farinae drops in adult patients with AA. METHODS One hundred and thirty-four adult patient data with house dust mite (HDM)-induced AA who had been treated for 2 years were collected. These patient data that we collected were divided into the SLIT group (n = 85) and control group (n = 49). All patients were treated with low to moderate dose of inhaled glucocorticoid and long-acting β2 agonists. Patients in the SLIT group were further treated with D. farinae drops. Clinical scores including the total asthma symptom score (TASS), total asthma medicine score (TAMS), asthma control test (ACT), and peak flow percentage (PEF%) were assessed before treatment and at yearly visits. The presence of adverse events (AEs) were recorded once a month. RESULTS Before treatment, the PEF% in the SLIT group was significantly lower than that in the control group (p < 0.05). After 2 years, both treatments were effective in the clinical scores when compared with baseline values (all p < 0.001). Meanwhile, the SLIT group showed significantly lower TASS and TAMS (all p < 0.001) and higher ACT (p < 0.001) and PEF% (p < 0.05) when compared with the control group. No severe systemic AEs were reported. CONCLUSIONS SLIT with D. farinae drops plus pharmacotherapy is more effective than routine drug treatment in adult patients with AA.

Abstract
AIM In the present study, we assessed the diagnostic value of epidermal growth factor (egf) and cancer antigens 125 (ca125) and 15-3 (ca15-3) in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (balf) of lung cancer from 79 enrolled patients with suspected lung cancer. METHODS All patients underwent fibrescopic examination, during which balf samples were collected. Levels of egf, ca125, and ca15-3 were determined in balf using commercially available test kits. RESULTS The results showed that levels of egf in balf were significantly higher in patients with lung cancer than in patients with benign diseases (p < 0.01); no significant differences for ca125 (p = 0.67) or ca15-3 (p = 0.43) in balf were observed between the lung cancer patients and the non-cancer control subjects. With a cut-off value of 27.22 pg/mL, egf showed a sensitivity of 63.6% and a specificity of 65.7% in predicting the malignant nature of pulmonary disease. CONCLUSIONS The study findings suggest that levels of egf are significantly increased in balf from patients with lung cancer than in balf from patients with benign disease. Detection of the level of egf in balf is proposed as a noninvasive test to identify patients at high risk for lung cancer.

Abstract
In this work, porous structures were introduced to the surface of Fe-based metallic glass ribbons for the first time by chemical treatment in order to increase the catalytic activity in the degradation of azo dyes. The results show that etching treatment in an HF solution with a volume concentration of 20% for 40 min leads to a porous structure on the FeSiBNb metallic glass with a dramatic increase in the specific surface area by 25 times. The much higher specific surface area of the porous ribbons greatly improves the catalytic activity in the degradation of Direct Blue 15 when compared with as-spun metallic ribbons.

Abstract
With advances in natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery, peroral endoscopic myotomy (POEM) has become a novel treatment for esophageal achalasia. In this study, we investigated the feasibility and safety of POEM in patients with achalasia after failed endoscopic interventions. Data on all patients undergoing POEM treatment of achalasia were collected prospectively. We enrolled 61 patients who underwent POEM for achalasia between July 2011 and January 2014. The preoperative intervention group included patients who had undergone botulinum toxin injection or pneumatic balloon dilation before POEM. The preoperative, operative, and short-term outcome data between the groups were compared. Among preoperative intervention group, 22 patients received endoscopic therapy before being referred for operation (18 dilation only, 2 botulinum toxin only, and 2 both treatments). Procedure time in the preoperative intervention group was similar to the nonpreoperative intervention group (60.8 ± 30.9 vs. 62.0 ± 21.0 minutes, P = 0.863). Both groups demonstrated significant improvement in Eckardt scores and manometric outcomes at 1-year follow-up. There were no significant differences in pretreatment and posttreatment D-values of symptom scores and lower esophageal sphincter pressures between groups (6.2 ± 2.2 vs. 6.1 ± 1.8, P = 0.840; 27.9 ± 17.6 vs. 24.9 ± 15.2; P = 0.569). There was also no significant difference in the incidence of intraoperative complications (P = 0.958) and gastroesophageal reflux rate (23.5% vs. 20.0%, P = 0.771) between the two groups. Our study demonstrated that POEM is safe and effective, even for treating achalasia in the setting of failed endoscopic interventions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS Metastasis in retroperitoneal lymph nodes is one of the signs of advanced stage or terminal stage of malignancy. We performed a trial to assess the safety and efficacy of ultrasonography (US)-guided local neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (Nd:YAG) laser ablation for metastatic lymph nodes in the retroperitoneal region. METHODS We evaluated 4 cases of retroperitoneal metastatic lymph nodes treated using US-guided Nd:YAG laser ablation. Additionally, we reviewed the PubMed database for articles on thermal ablation of retroperitoneal lesions until March 2016, without language limitations. RESULTS In our study, all lesions were nearly completely ablated with mild discomfort, including pain and fever at the 3-month follow-up. In the literature review, a total of 398 patients with 491 retroperitoneal tumors were identified, and complications after the procedure included enterovesical fistula, fecal incontinence, and hematoma. CONCLUSIONS Percutaneous laser ablation could be a theoretically promising approach for retroperitoneal metastatic lesions. ClinicalTrials.gov number: NCT02822053.

Abstract
This study aimed to compare the efficacy and safety of EUS-guided ethanol injection and 125I seed brachytherapy for malignant left-sided liver tumors which were difficult for trans-abdominal intervention. The study protocol was registered at Clinicaltrials.gov (NCT02816944). Twenty-six patients were consecutively and prospectively hospitalized for EUS-guided interventional treatment of refractory malignant left-sided liver tumors between June 2014 and June 2016. Liver masses were detected using EUS in 25 of 26 (96.2%) patients. EUS-guided interventional treatment was completed uneventfully in 23 of 26 (88.5%) patients using anhydrous ethanol injection (n = 10) or iodine-125 seed implantation (n = 13). Six months later, complete response was achieved in 15 of 23 (65.2%) patients and partial response in 8 of 23 (34.8%) patients. Patients with tumor residual have second-look EUS-guided interventional treatment (n = 5), radiotherapy (n = 2) or surgical resection (n = 1). Complete response was achieved after repeated interventional treatment in 3 of 5 patients who underwent second EUS-guided intervention; 2 patients required additional surgical resection but one succeed. No significant complications occurred. Therefore EUS-guided 125I seed brachytherapy is an effective and safe treatment modality for radical operation or promising palliative control of malignant left-sided liver tumors refractory to trans-abdominal intervention.
