Abstract
Mutually unbiased bases (MUBs) play a key role in many protocols in quantum science, such as quantum key distribution. However, defining MUBs for arbitrary high-dimensional systems is theoretically difficult, and measurements in such bases can be hard to implement. We show experimentally that efficient quantum state reconstruction of a high-dimensional multipartite quantum system can be performed by considering only the MUBs of the individual parts. The state spaces of the individual subsystems are always smaller than the state space of the composite system. Thus, the benefit of this method is that MUBs need to be defined for the small Hilbert spaces of the subsystems rather than for the large space of the overall system. This becomes especially relevant where the definition or measurement of MUBs for the overall system is challenging. We illustrate this approach by implementing measurements for a high-dimensional system consisting of two photons entangled in the orbital angular momentum degree of freedom, and we reconstruct the state of this system for dimensions of the individual photons from d = 2 to 5.

Abstract
Allopatric infections of French Galba truncatula with an Argentinean isolate of Fasciola hepatica were carried out to determine the infectivity of foreign miracidia in three snail populations differing by their susceptibility to French miracidia (two highly and one poorly susceptible populations). Sympatric infections of G. truncatula with French miracidia were used as controls. Compared to sympatric infections of G. truncatula, snail survival at day 30 post-infection in allopatric groups was significantly lower in a highly susceptible population and significantly greater in the other two. Prevalence in snails infected with the allopatric isolate was significantly lower (16.4-34.5 % instead of 58.6-72.1 %), whereas their patent period was significantly longer (a mean of 69.9-85.9 days instead of 6.4-20.7 days). The mean number of metacercariae was also higher in allopatric groups (236.5-897.3 per cercariae-shedding snail instead of 70.7-222.1). Owing to longer patent periods, the Argentinean isolate of F. hepatica was less pathogenic for these snails. The lower prevalence of infection, the longer patent period and the higher number of metacercariae noted in allopatric groups might be the consequence of an adaptive mechanism used by this digenean introduced to the New World to infect new populations of unusual intermediate hosts.

Abstract
To elucidate the role of serotonin in the onset of puberty, the effects of both systemic and in-ovarian bursa administration of serotonin on the neuroendocrine mechanism that modulates the onset of puberty, follicular development and first ovulation were evaluated. Two experiments were carried out. For the first, 25 or 37.5 mg kg–1 of bodyweight of serotonin creatinine sulfate was administered by a subcutaneous route to 30-day-old female rats. In the second experiment, serotonin creatinine sulfate was administered directly into the ovarian bursa of 34-day-old female rats. Systemic administration of 25 or 37.5 mg kg–1 of serotonin creatinine sulfate induced a delay in the ages of vaginal opening and first vaginal oestrus, a decrease in the number of ovulating animals, and serum concentrations of FSH, LH, oestradiol and progesterone. An increase in the number of Class 3 (>500 μm) and atretic follicles was observed in the ovaries of these animals. The administration of serotonin creatinine sulfate in the ovarian bursa did not modify the onset of puberty and ovulation, but a reduced serum concentration of oestradiol was observed. Our results suggest that serotonin acts on the components of the hypothalamus–hypophysis–ovary axis by modulating follicular development, ovarian functions and the onset of puberty.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Galicia is the Spanish region in which most bovine spongiform encephalopathy cases have been registered. Meixoeiro Hospital is included in the Galician Health Service (SERGAS). The aim of the study was to analyze the clinical and epidemiological characteristics of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) in the health area of Meixoeiro Hospital and to identify possible specific risk factors to the general public. METHODS All incident cases of CJD were identified in the health area of Meixoeiro Hospital (187,877 inhabitants) over a 14-year period, 1997-2010, and classified according to WHO diagnostic criteria. We obtained clinical detail and epidemiological information on all cases. Crude and age-specific incidence rates were calculated. A review of surgical or invasive medical procedures was undertaken. RESULTS We diagnosed 12 patients with CJD, 10 sporadic CJD (sCJD), and two genetic CJD (gCJD). No iatrogenic or variant CJD was detected. According to Poisson distribution, 3.9 CJD cases would be expected for our area over the 14 years researched. The average yearly mortality rate from CJD was 4.6 cases per million (3.8 from sCJD and 0.8 from gCJD). Eight patients (67%) underwent at least one surgical or invasive medical procedure. Sixteen of twenty-seven (59%) of these procedures were undertaken in Meixoeiro Hospital. CONCLUSIONS The incidence of CJD in the health area of Meixoeiro Hospital is three times higher than expected. The hypothesis that at least some cases of sCJD are apparently because of covert transmission or zoonosis events should not be formally refuted and might explain the high rate found.

Abstract
Experimental infections of two South American lymnaeids (Lymnaea neotropica and L. viatrix var. ventricosa) with Paramphistomum daubneyi were carried out to determine if these snail species could sustain larval development of this digenean and, if so, to specify their potential for cercarial production. A French population of Galba truncatula infected and raised according to the same protocol served as controls. In both experiments, prevalence of P. daubneyi infections in snails did not significantly differ from each other. In snail groups evaluated for cercarial shedding (first experiment), a significantly lower number of shed cercariae was noted for L. neotropica, while those from G. truncatula and L. v. ventricosa did not differ significantly from each other. Dissection of infected snails at day 65 post-exposure at 20 °C (second experiment) found significantly lower burdens of P. daubneyi rediae and cercariae in the bodies of L. neotropica than in those of G. truncatula and L. v. ventricosa. Compared to total cercarial production observed in dissected snails, the percentage of cercariae which exited from snails was 75.6% for G. truncatula, 21.6% for L. neotropica, and 91.4% for L. v. ventricosa. This last species seems to be a good candidate for metacercarial production of P. daubneyi.

Abstract
AIM To evaluate the prevalence of Sleep Apnea-Hypopnea Syndrome (SAHS) in patients who were admitted with Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS) to the Coronary Care Unit (CCU) and the clinical predictors of SAHS in patients with ACS and to compare the results of the simple sleep test (SST) with polysomnography (PSG). METHODS This was a prospective study that included patients who were admitted to the CCU with ACS, which was confirmed by coronary angiography. Demographic and anthropometric data, cardiovascular risk factors and measures on the Epworth Sleepiness Scale were collected. The SST was conducted with the ApneaLink(TM) device during hospitalization or after discharge. Patients with an apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) ≥ 10/h were invited to participate in PSG. RESULTS Ninety-one patients with ACS were consecutively included over 4 months. Of the fifty-eight patients who completed the study 43 (74.1%) were male. The mean age was 61.7±12.2 years, and the mean body mass index was 27.4±3.5 kg/m(2). The median time for SST performance was 17.5 days. This study was compatible with SAHS in 25 cases (43.1%). Patients who had an AHI ≥ 10/h in the SST were submitted to PSG and SST simultaneously. The median interval between the ACS and the execution of PSG was 30 days. PSG confirmed that all of the cases that were detected by SST were positive. CONCLUSION In our study, we found a high prevalence of SAHS in patients who were admitted to the CCU with ACS (43.1%). These results support the need for SAHS screening in patients who are hospitalized with ACS. The SST may have a role in the screening of SAHS in this population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Standard treatment of advanced squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck (SCCHN) is concurrent chemoradiation. Erlotinib is an oral tyrosine kinase inhibitor of epidermal growth factor receptor, which has shown activity in SCCHN. Phase I study aims to determine the maximum tolerated dose and dose-limiting toxicity (DLT) of adding erlotinib to chemoradiation therapy in patients with surgically resected locally advanced SCCHN. PATIENTS AND METHODS Inclusion criteria--SCCHN patients with T3 or T4 primary lesion (except T3N0 with negative resection margins); pathologic N2-N3 disease; poor prognostic findings; age 18-70 years; Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status of zero to one; no evidence of metastasis; adequate organic function and written informed consent. Study design--dose-escalating phase I study with three cohorts of three to six patients each that received increasing doses of erlotinib (100-150 mg/day p.o.) and cisplatin (30-40 mg/m(2) i.v., day 1) for 7 weeks. Radiotherapy--standard regimen of 1.8 Gy daily (5 fractions/week) to a maximum total dose of 63 Gy in 7 weeks. RESULTS Thirteen male (median age: 57 years) were enrolled. Overall, the regimen was well tolerated. Two of three patients treated at dose level III (erlotinib: 150 mg/day; cisplatin: 40 mg/m(2)) developed DLT consisting of grade 3 infection and grade 3 mucositis. Other toxic effects included diarrhea, asthenia, and rash. Recommended dose for additional studies: erlotinib 150 mg/day p.o.; cisplatin 30 mg/m(2)/week i.v. CONCLUSION Erlotinib can be safely combined with chemoradiation without requiring dose reduction of chemo- or radiotherapy in this postsurgical population.

Abstract
MRSA infections continue to be a serious and formidable challenge to health care providers and their prevalence is increasing exponentially. In the past, MRSA infections were observed only in hospitalized patients whereas now they are encountered in the outpatient setting. Understanding the pattern of the widespread distribution of MRSA as well as the factors associated with its spread are paramount to its recognition and eradication. The current state of MRSA transmission, control and management is reviewed.

Abstract
Eucalyptus globulus wood samples were subjected to autohydrolysis for extracting hemicelluloses, and the resulting solids were assayed as substrates for kraft pulping and further Totally Chlorine Free (TCF) bleaching. The susceptibility of treated solids to kraft processing was assessed under selected experiments covering the optimum experimental range. In order to establish a basis for comparison, samples of untreated wood were also subjected to kraft delignification. The best kraft pulps obtained from autohydrolyzed solids were subjected to an optimized TCF bleaching sequence involving double alkaline oxygen and pressurized H(2)O(2) processing, and characterized using standard methods. The suitability of the final product obtained by autohydrolysis-kraft delignification-TCF bleaching for specific purposes is discussed on the basis of the experimental results.

Abstract
Optical vortices are lines of phase singularity which percolate through all optical fields. We report the entanglement of linked optical vortex loops in the light produced by spontaneous parametric down-conversion. As measured by using a Bell inequality, this entanglement between topological features extends over macroscopic and finite volumes. The entanglement of photons in complex three-dimensional topological states suggests the possibility of entanglement of similar features in other quantum systems describable by complex scalar functions, such as superconductors, superfluids, and Bose-Einstein condensates.
