Abstract
As a promising means of renewable energy storage, the production of molecular hydrogen and oxygen from photocatalytic water splitting has gained increasing interest. The optimal photocatalyst for water splitting should have high solar energy conversion efficiency and strong photocatalytic redox ability to drive the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). However, few photocatalysts have been reported to fulfil these two contradictive requirements. Here, we demonstrated from first-principles calculations that the recently synthesized two-dimensional carbon nitride (C3N5) multilayers can serve as promising candidates to reach this goal. The intrinsic electric field which is more pronounced in the multilayers alters the band alignment of the photocatalysts, making the HER and OER be driven solely by the photogenerated carriers. The thickness-dependent electronic band gap (2.95-2.16 eV) along with the high carrier mobility broadens the energy range of light absorption and promotes carrier separation and transfer, leading to high solar energy conversion efficiency. Our computational results offer not only low-cost, Earth-abundant and environmentally friendly photocatalysts but also a promising strategy for the design of photocatalysts for highly efficient overall water splitting without using sacrificial reagents.

Abstract
Spontaneous full photocatalytic water splitting into hydrogen and oxygen under visible light irradiation without the need for sacrificial agents is a challenging task, because suitable band gaps, low overpotentials for both half-reactions and spatially-separated catalytic sites should be fulfilled simultaneously in a photocatalytic system. Here, we propose a promising strategy to achieve this goal by constructing van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures of two-dimensional (2D) materials. Using first-principles calculations, we predict two promising photocatalysts, MoSe2/SnSe2 and WSe2/SnSe2 heterostructures, with the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) taking place separately on the MoSe2 (WSe2) and SnSe2 layers. More excitingly, the Se-vacancy of the MoSe2 (WSe2) monolayer effectively lowers the HER overpotential, making the catalytic reactions occur spontaneously under the potentials solely provided by the photo-generated electrons and holes in pure water. The unique band alignment of these hetero-structured photocatalysts leads to high solar-to-hydrogen (STH) energy conversion efficiencies up to 10.5%, which is quite promising for commercial applications. This work opens up an avenue for the design of highly-efficient photocatalysts for full water splitting.

Abstract
Bacillus velezensis strain WRN014 was isolated from banana fields in Hainan, China. Bacillus velezensis is an important member of the plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) which can enhance plant growth and control soil-borne disease. The complete genome of Bacillus velezensis WRN014 was sequenced by combining Illumina Hiseq 2500 system and Pacific Biosciences SMRT high-throughput sequencing technologies. Then, the genome of Bacillus velezensis WRN014, together with 45 other completed genome sequences of the Bacillus velezensis strains, were comparatively studied. The genome of Bacillus velezensis WRN014 was 4,063,541bp in length and contained 4,062 coding sequences, 9 genomic islands and 13 gene clusters. The results of comparative genomic analysis provide evidence that (i) The 46 Bacillus velezensis strains formed 2 obviously closely related clades in phylogenetic trees. (ii) The pangenome in this study is open and is increasing with the addition of new sequenced genomes. (iii) Analysis of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) revealed local diversification of the 46 Bacillus velezensis genomes. Surprisingly, SNPs were not evenly distributed throughout the whole genome. (iv) Analysis of gene clusters revealed that rich gene clusters spread over Bacillus velezensis strains and some gene clusters are conserved in different strains. This study reveals that the strain WRN014 and other Bacillus velezensis strains have potential to be used as PGPR and biopesticide.

Abstract
Plants are well-recognized sources of inhibitors for α-glucosidase - a key target enzyme for management of type 2 diabetes. Recently, two advanced bioactivity-profiling techniques, i.e., ligand fishing and high-resolution inhibition profiling, have shown great promises for accelerating identification of α-glucosidase inhibitors from complex plant extracts. Non-specific affinities and non-specific inhibitions are major sources of false positive hits from ligand fishing and high-resolution inhibition profiling, respectively. In an attempt to minimize such false positive hits, we describe a new screening approach based on ligand fishing and high-resolution inhibition profiling for detection of high-affinity ligands and assessment of inhibitory activity, respectively. The complementary nature of ligand fishing and high-resolution inhibition profiling was explored to identify α-glucosidase inhibitory ligands from a complex mixture, and proof-of-concept was demonstrated with crude ethyl acetate extract of Ginkgo biloba. In addition to magnetic beads with a 3-carbon aliphatic linker, α-glucosidase was immobilized on magnetic beads with a 21-carbon aliphatic linker; and the two different types of magnetic beads were compared for their hydrolytic activity and fishing efficiency.

Abstract
Natural antioxidant gamma-tocotrienol (GT3), a vitamin E family member, provides intestinal radiation protection. We seek to understand whether this protection is mediated via mucosal epithelial stem cells or sub-mucosal mesenchymal immune cells. Vehicle- or GT3-treated male CD2F1 mice were exposed to total body irradiation (TBI). Cell death was determined by terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL) assay. Villus height and crypt depth were measured with computer-assisted software in tissue sections. Functional activity was determined with an intestinal permeability assay. Immune cell recovery was measured with immunohistochemistry and Western blot, and the regeneration of intestinal crypts was assessed with ex vivo organoid culture. A single dose of GT3 (200 mg/kg body weight (bwt)) administered 24 h before TBI suppressed cell death, prevented a decrease in villus height, increased crypt depth, attenuated intestinal permeability, and upregulated occludin level in the intestine compared to the vehicle treated group. GT3 accelerated mesenchymal immune cell recovery after irradiation, but it did not promote ex vivo organoid formation and failed to enhance the expression of stem cell markers. Finally, GT3 significantly upregulated protein kinase B or AKT phosphorylation after TBI. Pretreatment with GT3 attenuates TBI-induced structural and functional damage to the intestine, potentially by facilitating intestinal immune cell recovery. Thus, GT3 could be used as an intestinal radioprotector.

Abstract
Pulsatilla (Ranunculaceae) comprises about 40 species, many of which have horticultural and/or medicinal importance. However, the recognition and identification of wild Pulsatilla species is difficult due to the presence of complex morphological characters. DNA barcoding is a powerful molecular tool capable of rapidly and accurately distinguishing between species. Here, we assessed the effectiveness of four commonly used DNA barcoding loci-rbcL (R), trnH-psbA ( T ), matK (M), and ITS (I)-to identify species of Pulsatilla from a comprehensive sampling group. Among the four barcoding single loci, the nuclear ITS marker showed the highest interspecific distances and the highest rate of correct identification. Among the eleven combinations, the chloroplast multi-locus R+T and R+M+T combinations were found to have the best species discrimination rate, followed by R+M. Overall, we propose that the R+M+T combination and the ITS marker on its own are, respectively, the best multi- and single-locus barcodes for discriminating among species of Pulsatilla. The phylogenetic analysis was able to distinguish species of Pulsatilla to the subgenus level, but the analysis also showed relatively low species resolution. This may be caused by incomplete lineage sorting and/or hybridization events in the evolutionary history of the genus, or by the resolution limit of the candidate barcodes. We also investigated the leaf epidermis of eight representative species using scanning electronic microscopy. The resulting micro-morphological characters were valuable for identification of related species. Using additional genome fragments, or even whole chloroplast genomes combined with micro-morphological data may permit even higher resolution of species in Pulsatilla.

Abstract
Spleen tyrosine kinase (SYK), a member of non-receptor tyrosine kinase family, plays an important role in immune responses against pathogen infection, which is capable of activating B cells signaling pathway and regulating inflammatory response. In this study, Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) ortholog (OnSYK) was identified and characterized at expression pattern against bacterial infection, function in B cells activation pathway and inflammatory response. The cDNA of OnSYK ORF contained 1851 bp of nucleotide sequence encoding polypeptides of 616 amino acids. The deduced OnSYK protein was highly homologous to other species SYK, containing two SH2 domains and a TyrKc domain. Spatial mRNA expression analysis revealed that OnSYK had wide tissue distribution and was highly expressed in the liver. After challenge of Streptococcus agalactiae (S. agalactiae) in vivo, mRNA expression of OnSYK was significantly up-regulated in the head kidney, spleen and liver. The up-regulation of OnSYK transcript was also displayed in the head kidney and spleen leukocytes stimulation with S. agalactiae and LPS in vitro, which was confirmed at protein level in the head kidney leukocytes by FACS analysis. In addition, after induction with mouse anti-OnIgM monoclonal antibody in vitro, the expressions of OnSYK and its downstream molecules (OnLYN, OnBLNK and OnAP-1) were significantly up-regulated in the head kidney leukocytes, and pharmacological inhibition of SYK activity with inhibitor (P505-15) significantly attenuated the expressions of OnLYN, OnBLNK and OnAP-1. Moreover, upon LPS challenge, the expressions of OnSYK, OnTNF-α, OnIL-6 and OnAP-1 were also up-regulated in the head kidney monocytes/macrophages. After treatment with SYK inhibitor (BAY 61-3606), the expressions of OnTNF-α, OnIL-6 and OnAP-1 were inhibited in the LPS-challenged head kidney monocytes/macrophages. Taken together, the results of this study indicated that OnSYK, playing potential roles in BCR signaling and inflammatory response, was likely to get involved in host defense against bacterial infection in Nile tilapia.

Abstract
A series of novel bivalent β-carboline derivatives were designed and synthesized, and in vitro cytotoxicity, cell apoptosis, and DNA-binding affinity were evaluated. The cytotoxic results demonstrated that most bivalent β-carboline derivatives exhibited stronger cytotoxicity than the corresponding monomer against the five selected tumor cell lines (A549, SGC-7901, Hela, SMMC-7721, and MCF-7), indicating that the dimerization at the C³ position could enhance the antitumor activity of β-carbolines. Among the derivatives tested, 4B, 6i, 4D, and 6u displayed considerable cytotoxicity against A549 cell line. Furthermore, 4B, 6i, 4D, and 6u induced cell apoptosis in a dose-dependent manner, and caused cell cycle arrest at the S and G2/M phases. Moreover, the levels of cytochrome C in mitochondria, and the expressions of bcl-2 protein, decreased after treatment with β-carbolines, which indicated that 6i and 6u could induce mitochondria-mediated apoptosis. In addition, the results of UV-visible spectral, thermal denaturation, and molecular docking studies revealed that 4B, 6i, 4D, and 6u could bind to DNA mainly by intercalation.

Abstract
Xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis (XGP) is an unusual form of chronic pyelonephritis in which the renal parenchyma is destroyed and replaced by lipid-laden foamy macrophages. It usually affects middle-aged women with a history of recurrent urinary tract infection, diabetes, or kidney stones. The inflammatory process is usually diffuse and can extend beyond the kidney. The rare focal forms may simulate primary renal tumours. The preoperative imaging diagnosis may be difficult. We reported five cases of XGP, The findings of ours were recorded including kidney size, shape, contour, the echogenecity of the renal parenchyma, the internal echoes of the dilate collecting system, the presence of perinephric fluid accumulation and obstruction. One of the 5 cases was a male patient, and the other four were female, with a mean age of 53 years. He affected kidneys of the 5 cases swelled in different degrees, and one of them was found with line-like anechoic fluid. Among the 5 cases, one kidney appeared as diffusely reducing of the parenchyma echogenicity, multiple hypoechoic areas, disappearance of corticomedullary differentiation and multiple hyperecho with shadow. A round cystic anechoic lesion was found in one kidney, with internal punctate echo and peripheral fluid. Ultrasonographic finding of 1 case was extremely hypoechoic lesion on the left kidney, protruding from the outline of the kidney, with the partial renal capsule discontinuous, the less clear boundary, and a little blood flow in it. Ultrasonographic demonstration of 2 cases was mild dilatation of the collecting system with irregular wall thickening and internal hypoechogenicity, and 1 case was solid lesion with less clear boundary to the pelvic wall and a small amount of blood flow signal, the another 1 case was showed floccule without internal blood flow. Three cases were caused by chronic obstruction verified by operation, of which one was staghorn calculi, one was poorly differentiated squamous cell carcinoma in the middle part of the ureter, and one was inflammatory stricture of upper ureteral. Through analysis of the above five cases and review of related literature, we explored diagnoses and management of the patients with XGP. Xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis (XGP) is a rare chronic variant of pyelonephritis characterized by destruction of the renal parenchyma. Combining ultrasonographic features of XGP with clinical recurrent urinary infection and chronic obstruction, XGP can be included in the differentiation. The diagnosis of XGP suspected by ultrasound can be clarified by CT, MRI, contrast-enhanced ultrasound.

Abstract
Materials with half-metallicity are long desired in spintronics. Using first-principles calculations, we predicted that the already-synthesized NbF3 crystal is a promising half-metal with a large exchange splitting and stable ferromagnetism. The mechanical stability, ductility and softness of the NbF3 crystal were confirmed by its elastic constants and moduli. The Curie temperature (TC = 120 K) estimated from the Monte Carlo simulations based on the 3D Ising model is above the liquid nitrogen temperature (78 K). The ferromagnetism and half-metallicity can be preserved on the surfaces of NbF3. The NbOF2 formed by substituting F with O atoms, however, has an antiferromagnetic ground state and a normal metallic band structure. This work opens an avenue for half-metallic materials and may find applications in spintronic devices.

Short-Term Inhibition of ADP-Induced Platelet Aggregation by Clopidogrel Ameliorates Radiation-Induced Toxicity in Rat Small Intestine. Thromb Haemost 2017. Abstract
SummaryEndothelial dysfunction and increased platelet aggregation may be involved in the pathogenesis of normal tissue radiation toxicity. This study assessed clopidogrel, an inhibitor of ADP-induced platelet aggregation, as a modulator of intestinal radiation injury (radiation enteropathy).Rat small intestine was exposed to 21 Gy X-radiation. Clopidogrel (20 mg/kg/day) or vehicle was administered from 2 days before to 10 days after irradiation. Structural radiation injury, neutrophil infiltration, smooth muscle cell proliferation, collagen content, and TGF-β1 expression were assessed 2 weeks (early phase) and 26 weeks (delayed phase) after irradiation, using quantitative histology and immunohistochemistry, morphometry, and real-time fluorogenic probe RT-PCR.Irradiated intestine exhibited significant histopathologic injury, reduced mucosal surface area, vascular sclerosis, intestinal wall fibrosis, increased collagen content, and increased TGF-β1 expression. Clopidogrel reduced ADP-induced platelet aggregation by 93% and significantly attenuated the severity of post-radiation vascular sclerosis (p = 0.004 and p = 0.02) and the loss of mucosal surface area (p = 0.0008 and p = 0.003) at both 2 and 26 weeks. Clopidogrel also ameliorated overall histopathologic injury (p = 0.02), relative intestinal collagen content (p = 0.03), and collagen III immunoreactivity levels 2 weeks after irradiation, and caused a borderline reduction in the radiation-induced increase in extracellular matrix-associated TGF-β immunoreactivity at 26 weeks (p = 0.04). The effects of clopidogrel on steady-state TGF-β1 mRNA levels and neutrophil infiltration were not statistically significant.Short-term clopidogrel administration affords protection against early and, to a lesser extent, delayed radiation enteropathy. Modulation of platelet aggregation should be subject to further studies as a potential method to increase safety and efficacy of radiation therapy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIM The concept of nurse-led care (NLC) was not familiar in China. This study was designed to evaluate the clinical effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of NLC versus rheumatologist-led care (RLC) in Chinese patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). METHODS Patients of either gender (aged ≥18 years) with RA were enrolled at Wenhai Central Hospital, China (January 2015 to December 2015). The participants were then randomized to NLC or RLC. Outcomes of both the groups were compared in terms of effectiveness by measuring the Disease Activity Score 28, visual analogue scores pertaining to pain and fatigue, and duration of morning stiffness. Costs associated with resource use for RA were assessed and compared between both groups. RESULTS A total of 214 RA patients in 2 groups (n = 107 in each group) were enrolled and analysed. Improvements in clinical outcomes (disease activity, pain, fatigue, and morning stiffness) over 12 months were significantly greater in the NLC group compared to RLC (P < 0.001). Overall, costs associated with resource use were higher in the RLC group compared to the NLC group (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Our preliminary finding suggested that RA patients managed by NLC compared to RLC may have better clinical outcomes and more cost-effective care in China.

Abstract
Great variations have been found in composition and content of the essential oil of Zanthoxylum bungeanum Maxim. (Rutaceae), resulting from various factors such as harvest time, drying and extraction methods (Huang et al., 2006; Shao et al., 2013), solvent and herbal parts used (Zhang, 1996; Cao and Zhang, 2010; Wang et al., 2011). However, in terms of artificial introduction and cultivation, there is little research on the chemical composition of essential oil extracted from Z. bungeanum Maxim. cultivars, which have been introduced from different origins. In this study, the composition and content of essential oil from six cultivars (I-VI) have been investigated. They were introduced and cultivated for 11 years in the same cultivation conditions. Cultivars were as followings: Qin'an (I) cultivar originally introduced from Qin'an City in Gansu Province; Dahongpao A (II) from She County in Hebei Province; Dahongpao B (III) from Fuping County; Dahongpao C (IV) from Tongchuan City; Meifengjiao (V) from Feng County; and, Shizitou (VI) from Hancheng City, in Shaanxi Province, China. This research is expected to provide a theoretical basis for further introduction, cultivation, and commercial development of Z. bungeanum Maxim.

Abstract
Objective: To explore the effect of JWA on cisplatin sensitivity and its potential molecular mechanism in esophageal cancer. Methods: The siRNA was used to inhibit the JWA expression, then cisplatin sensitivity and LC3 (autophagy related protein) expression levels were observed in TE1 cells.Further, the effect of autophagy inhibitor tamoxifen (3-MA) on above process was determined.Cisplatin sensitivity of 20 fresh esophageal cancer samples was evaluated by histoculture drug response assay (HDRA). Result: Silencing JWA gene increased the sensitivity of TE1 cells to cisplatin (P<0.05), and decreased the LC3-Ⅰ and LC3-Ⅱ proteins induced by cisplatin.Furthermore, combined with 3-MA increased the inhibition rate of cisplatin in JWA silencing group (P<0.05). Additionally, the inhibition rate of cisplatin on tissues with low JWA expression were higher than those with high expression (45.6% vs 25.6%, P=0.005). Conclusions: JWA could influence the cisplatin sensitivity by regulating autophagy in esophageal cancer.
