Abstract
Data on viral infections in apparently healthy snake collections in Germany were obtained with respect to husbandry conditions and health status. Samples from 100 boid snakes (from 14 collections) were examined microbiologically and for the presence of paramyxoviruses (PMVs) using RT-PCR. Blood was tested for the presence of antibodies against PMV, adenovirus and reovirus and for inclusion bodies indicative of inclusion body disease. Nine snakes tested positive for PMV, and inclusion bodies were detected in six snakes. Antibodies against PMV were found in one snake, and two snakes had antibodies against an adenovirus. A significant correlation was found between the origin of the snake and the presence of PMV, and between the presence of remarkable microbiological findings and husbandry conditions.

Abstract
An approximately eight-year-old female grey parrot (Psittacus erithacus erithacus) was presented with a two months history of blindness. The radiographic examination showed a dilatation of the proventriculus, ventriculus and gut. Ophthalmoscopy and electroretinography revealed degeneration of the retina. A proventricular dilatation disease was suspected. The bird was euthanased because of deteriorating condition and poor prognosis. The pathological examination showed an atrophy of the ventricular muscles and lymphoplasmacytic infiltrates of the myenteric plexus of the proventriculus, ventriculus and gut as well as moderate lymphoplasmacytic infiltrates of the cerebrum with moderate neuronophagia. Lymphoplasmacytic infiltrates in the retina, indicating proventricular dilatation disease, and subsequent retinal degeneration were found. A potential common aetiology for proventricular dilatation disease and blindness is discussed.

Abstract
Respiratory diseases play an important role in reptiles kept in captivity. Microbiological examinations are described as an essential part of the diagnostic possibilities. Therefore the aim of this study was to collect data on the usefulness of results obtained after aerobic culture (sheepblood, brilliantgreen, sabouraud's agar) of swabs and tracheal lavages following standardized sampling. Respiratory symptoms were found in 24.3% of the snakes, 16.5% of the tortoises/turtles and 1.6% of the lizards presented in the clinic for birds and reptiles at the university Leipzig. Altogether, 52% of the examined samples were found to be bacteriologically and 31% mycologically of pathologic significance. The tracheal lavage proved to be more sensitive in comparison to swabs taken from the pharynx. The bacteria most often found in the samples were Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Stenotrophomonas maltophila. Mycologic culture revealed Aspergillus sp. and yeast most often. In boids and pythons, the highest number of bacteriologic results assessed to be of pathological significance were found (75%). Mycologically, samples from tortoises were found most often to have a result of pathological significance (48%). To summarize the aerobic cultivation on standard media (in this study: Columbia-Agar with sheep blood, brilliant-green-, Sabouraud-Agar) can be recommended as an initial diagnostic measure in reptiles presented with respiratory symptoms; further pathogens (eg, viral examination, Mycoplasma) should be checked additionally.

Abstract
Doses of 12.5 mg voriconazole/kg bodyweight administered every 12 hours by crop gavage to six falcons for 14 days provided peak plasma concentrations of more than 1 microg/ml, but the trough concentrations were lower and sometimes undetectable. Administering the same doses incorporated into meat that was fed to one falcon for seven days and to three falcons for up to 91 days provided similar plasma concentrations.

Abstract
Six pairs of alipochromatic ('recessive-white') canaries (Serinus canaria) and six pairs of coloured canaries were kept through a complete breeding cycle while being fed a diet providing 12,000 iu vitamin A/kg. The eggs of three pairs (one recessive-white and two coloured) were all unfertilised and there were only 23 hatchlings (14 recessive-white and nine coloured), of which 14 (10 recessive-white and four coloured) were alive after the first moult. However, there was no clinical, biochemical or pathological evidence that the recessive-white canaries were suffering from vitamin A deficiency or that the coloured canaries were suffering from vitamin A toxicity, suggesting that the diet met the vitamin A requirements of both groups.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT) is a new method to reduce intraocular pressure in eyes with primary open angle glaucoma. The laser parameters of a Q-switched, frequency-doubled Nd:YAG-laser are set to selectively target pigmented trabecular meshwork cells without visible damage to the adjacent non-pigmented tissue. SLT acts non-thermally, the intracellular microdisruptions triggered by the laser are confined to the targeted cells, the laser pulses are so short that heat caused within the targeted cells does not have time to spread to the surrounding tissue. A controlled prospective randomised clinical study was conducted to compare the long-term results, safety and efficacy after SLT with two different laser systems and after ALT in the treatment of ocular hypertension and medically uncontrolled open angle glaucoma. PATIENTS AND METHODS About two years ago the authors performed a selective laser trabeculoplasty in 119 eyes using the SLT laser unit Otello (Glautec AG, ARC, EC), here named as SLT-I, and in 124 eyes using the SLT laser unit Selecta II (Lumenis, Palo Alto, CA), here named as SLT-II. In 41 eyes the authors performed argon laser trabeculoplasties using the argon laser Argus (Aesculap Meditec, EC). RESULTS Two months after treatment mean IOP reduction from baseline was 1.9 mmHg or, respectively, 8.8 % after SLT with the SLT-System I, 2.0 mmHg or, respectively, 9.5 % after SLT with SLT-System II, and 2.2 mmHg or, respectively, 9.9 % after ALT with the argon laser. Twelve months after LTP mean pressure reductions were 1.7 mmHg (7.9 %) after SLT-I, 1.8 mmHg (8.5 %) after SLT-II, and 2.1 mmHg (9.4 %) after ALT. The response curve of the eyes with SLT-I greatly resembled that of the eyes with SLT-II and those eyes with ALT. CONCLUSIONS Pressure reduction was highest after ALT, followed by SLT-II, in SLT-I reduction was the least, but the differences were not significant. Our findings did not correspond with those of other authors reporting an average IOP reduction of 25 % after SLT and ALT. SLT has shown reasonable efficacy in lowering IOP in eyes with ocular hypertension and primary open angle glaucoma, SLT achieves about the same level of IOP reduction compared with ALT. As a result of the preservation of the structure of the trabecular meshwork and low rate of complications, SLT is a safe alternative to ALT. The exact biological effect induced with SLT is still not yet understood. For the early glaucoma stages SLT provides an alternative to drug treatment, for the advanced glaucomas SLT is an additional option for further pressure reduction. More long-term follow-up studies are needed to determine whether the IOP lowering effect is sustained over time, and to assess the efficacy of repeated SLT.

Abstract
Surfactant protein D (SP-D) is a key regulator of pathogen-induced inflammation. SP-D is further involved in lipid homeostasis in mouse lung and circulation and recent data have demonstrated that the body mass index (BMI; in kg/m(2)) is influenced by genes in common with SP-D. The objective of the present study was to describe the association between serum SP-D and weight, waist circumference or BMI, and furthermore to observe body weight development in SP-D-deficient (Spd-/-) mice. As a part of the Danish population-based twin study (GEMINAKAR) on the metabolic syndrome, we analysed 1476 Danish twins for serum SP-D and investigated associations with weight, waist circumference and BMI by multiple regression analysis. Serum SP-D was significantly and inversely associated with weight (P = 0.001) and waist circumference in men (P < 0.001) and to BMI in both genders (P = 0.039 women, P < 0.001 men). The age-dependent increase in serum SP-D was most prominent in lean persons (BMI < 20). Spd-/- mice and wild-type mice were subjected to a feeding study and body weights were recorded in a time course over 24 weeks. Spd-/- mouse weight gain was significantly increased, with 90 mg/week (P < 0.0001) in males on normal chow. Fat percentage was significantly increased by 17% in the Spd-/- male mice (P = 0.003). We conclude, that there is an association between low levels or absent SP-D and obesity.

Abstract
Since 2003, the German Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) has conducted annual interlaboratory comparisons for passive radon measuring devices in order to ensure the quality of these measurements. Passive radon devices which use solid state nuclear track detectors, electrets or activated charcoal can be tested. The exposures of radon devices are carried out in the radon calibration laboratory at BfS. Radon activity concentrations are traced back to the national standard, being established at the National Institute of Physics and Metrology (PTB). According to the national guideline, radon services which offer radon monitoring at workplaces have to participate in the intercomparisons and prove the suitability of their radon devices for the measurements.
