Upper Limits on the Stochastic Gravitational-Wave Background from Advanced LIGO's First Observing Run

A wide variety of astrophysical and cosmological sources are expected to contribute to a stochastic gravitational-wave background. Following the observations of GW150914 and GW151226, the rate and mass of coalescing binary black holes appear to be greater than many previous expectations. As a result, the stochastic background from unresolved compact binary coalescences is expected to be particularly loud. We perform a search for the isotropic stochastic gravitational-wave background using data from Advanced Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory's (aLIGO) first observing run. The data display no evidence of a stochastic gravitational-wave signal. We constrain the dimensionless energy density of gravitational waves to be Ω_{0}<1.7×10^{-7} with 95% confidence, assuming a flat energy density spectrum in the most sensitive part of the LIGO band (20-86 Hz). This is a factor of ∼33 times more sensitive than previous measurements. We also constrain arbitrary power-law spectra. Finally, we investigate the implications of this search for the background of binary black holes using an astrophysical model for the background.

Directional Limits on Persistent Gravitational Waves from Advanced LIGO's First Observing Run

We employ gravitational-wave radiometry to map the stochastic gravitational wave background expected from a variety of contributing mechanisms and test the assumption of isotropy using data from the Advanced Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory's (aLIGO) first observing run. We also search for persistent gravitational waves from point sources with only minimal assumptions over the 20-1726 Hz frequency band. Finding no evidence of gravitational waves from either point sources or a stochastic background, we set limits at 90% confidence. For broadband point sources, we report upper limits on the gravitational wave energy flux per unit frequency in the range F_{α,Θ}(f)<(0.1-56)×10^{-8}    erg cm^{-2} s^{-1} Hz^{-1}(f/25  Hz)^{α-1} depending on the sky location Θ and the spectral power index α. For extended sources, we report upper limits on the fractional gravitational wave energy density required to close the Universe of Ω(f,Θ)<(0.39-7.6)×10^{-8}  sr^{-1}(f/25  Hz)^{α} depending on Θ and α. Directed searches for narrowband gravitational waves from astrophysically interesting objects (Scorpius X-1, Supernova 1987 A, and the Galactic Center) yield median frequency-dependent limits on strain amplitude of h_{0}<(6.7,5.5,  and  7.0)×10^{-25}, respectively, at the most sensitive detector frequencies between 130-175 Hz. This represents a mean improvement of a factor of 2 across the band compared to previous searches of this kind for these sky locations, considering the different quantities of strain constrained in each case.

A case study in institutional repository content curation

Purpose

The purpose of this case study is to illustrate how a university library collaborated with a specific college to preserve scholarship with a sustainable approach. The practical process described is recommended for increasing content submissions in a newly established institutional repository. Of the eight colleges at Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU), the Honors College was selected as a case study for a library–college collaboration on content curation for the institutional repository that is maintained by MTSU’s Walker Library.

Design/methodology/approach

Concept of shared and divided responsibilities for the upload, maintenance and sustainability of institutional repository submissions based on a particular case study and aided with literature on data management, digital publishing, library publishing and preservation research.

Findings

The partner approach, the sharing and division of responsibilities, is instrumental to the growth and sustainability of a library publishing program and for the preservation of university scholarship.

Practical implications

The (college) partner approach not only educates campus units about a new resource (e.g. institutional repository), but also encourages campus units to rethink other current and outdated practices that need to adapt to technological changes that support the unit and its students. This approach will help the library with campus outreach after an institutional repository is implemented and offers guidance on a collaborative approach to repository submission growth.

Originality/value

This paper suggests a (college) partner approach that mutually benefits the College and its students, departments and the library that maintains the institutional repository on behalf of the university. During the implementation process of this case study, an Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)/accessibility compliance issue of repository items surfaced and allowed for a new course of action to be taken campus wide which adds to the originality of this case study.

Novel indole-based compounds that differentiate alkylindole-sensitive receptors from cannabinoid receptors and microtubules: Characterization of their activity on glioma cell migration

Indole-based compounds, such as the alkyl-indole (AI) compound WIN55212-2, activate the cannabinoid receptors, CB₁ and CB₂, two well-characterized G protein-coupled receptors (GPCR). Reports indicate that several indole-based cannabinoid agonists, including WIN55212-2, lack selectivity and interact with at least two additional targets: AI-sensitive GPCRs and microtubules. Studying how indole-based compounds modulate the activity of these 4 targets has been difficult as selective chemical tools were not available. Here we report the pharmacological characterization of six newly-developed indole-based compounds (ST-11, ST-23, ST-25, ST-29, ST-47 and ST-48) that exhibit distinct binding affinities at AI-sensitive receptors, cannabinoid CB₁ and CB₂ receptors and the colchicine site of tubulin. Several compounds exhibit some level of selectivity for AI-sensitive receptors, including ST-11 that binds AI-sensitive receptors with a K_d of 52nM and appears to have a weaker affinity for the colchicine site of tubulin (K_d=3.2μM) and does not bind CB₁/CB₂ receptors. Leveraging these characteristics, we show that activation of AI-sensitive receptors with ST-11 inhibits both the basal and stimulated migration of the Delayed Brain Tumor (DBT) mouse glioma cell line. Our study describes a new series of indole-based compounds that enable the pharmacological and functional differentiation of alkylindole-sensitive receptors from cannabinoid receptors and microtubules.

De Novo Donor-Specific Human Leukocyte Antigen Antibody Screening in Kidney Transplant Recipients After the First Year Posttransplantation: A Medical Decision Analysis

Screening for de novo donor-specific antibodies (dnDSA) in stable kidney transplant recipients is routine practice in some centers. Patients with DSA are at increased risk of graft loss and early intervention may improve outcomes. However, the costs and benefits of dnDSA surveillance are unknown. A medical decision analysis to examine a screening strategy was developed for kidney transplant recipients who had stable graft function and were DSA negative 1 year posttransplant. In the base case, a modest 25% reduction in graft loss in dnDSA-positive patients treated with increased immunosuppression resulted in 0.04618 quality-adjusted years (QALYs) gained. However, benefits from reduced graft loss were eliminated if there was a small increased risk of death from added therapy. The incremental cost effectiveness was marginal at approximately $120 000-250 000 per QALY, but could be more or less favorable depending on several key variables such as efficacy of treatment, screening costs, incidence rate of subclinical dnDSA, and patient survival. Screening performed the best in patients with lower mortality rates and higher baseline incidence rates of dnDSA. Further study is warranted to gather the necessary high-quality evidence to justify screening.

FX knockout CHO hosts can express desired ratios of fucosylated or afucosylated antibodies with high titers and comparable product quality

During antibody dependent cell cytotoxicity (ADCC) the target cells are killed by monocytes and natural killer cells. ADCC is enhanced when the antibody heavy chain's core N-linked glycan lacks the fucose molecule(s). Several strategies have been utilized to generate fully afucosylated antibodies. A commonly used and efficient approach has been knocking out the FUT8 gene of the Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) host cells, which results in expression of antibody molecules with fully afucosylated glycans. However, a major drawback of the FUT8-KO host is the requirement for undertaking two separate cell line development (CLD) efforts in order to obtain both primarily fucosylated and fully afucosylated antibody species for comparative studies in vitro and in vivo. Even more challenging is obtaining primarily fucosylated and FUT8-KO clones with similar enough product quality attributes to ensure that any observed ADCC advantage(s) can be strictly attributed to afucosylation. Here, we report generation and use of a FX knockout (FXKO) CHO host cell line that is capable of expressing antibody molecules with either primarily fucosylated or fully afucosylated glycan profiles with otherwise similar product quality attributes, depending on addition of fucose to the cell culture media. Hence, the FXKO host not only obviates the requirement for undertaking two separate CLD efforts, but it also averts the need for screening many colonies to identify clones with comparable product qualities. Finally, FXKO clones can express antibodies with the desired ratio of primarily fucosylated to afucosylated glycans when fucose is titrated into the production media, to allow achieving intended levels of FcγRIII-binding and ADCC for an antibody. Chemical activation of a food deprivation signal extends lifespan

Model organisms subject to dietary restriction (DR) generally live longer. Accompanying this lifespan extension are improvements in overall health, based on multiple metrics. This indicates that pharmacological treatments that mimic the effects of DR could improve health in humans. To find new chemical structures that extend lifespan, we screened 30 000 synthetic, diverse drug‐like chemicals in Caenorhabditis elegans and identified several structurally related compounds that acted through DR mechanisms. The most potent of these NP1 impinges upon a food perception pathway by promoting glutamate signaling in the pharynx. This results in the overriding of a GPCR pathway involved in the perception of food and which normally acts to decrease glutamate signals. Our results describe the activation of a dietary restriction response through the pharmacological masking of a novel sensory pathway that signals the presence of food. This suggests that primary sensory pathways may represent novel targets for human pharmacology.

Healthy H.E.A.R.T.s: Results of a Pilot Stroke-Specific Self-Management Program to Decrease the Recurrent Stroke Risk

Healthy H.E.A.R.T.s is an interdisciplinary stroke-specific self-management program that aims to reduce recurrent risk of stroke. Participants in the pilot program learned how to manage their stroke condition by adopting healthy habits for health responsibility, coping, nutrition, and exercise.

Practice nurses and computing: some evidence on utilization, training, and attitudes to computer use

Seventy-seven practice nurses in the Portsmouth and Worcestershire areas were surveyed by postal questionnaire about their experience with, and attitudes to, using computers in general practice nursing. Almost all (98%) of the respondents worked in a computerized general practice and all reported having a positive attitude towards the clinical and administrative use of computers. Some 84% of practice nurses had a computer terminal where they saw patients and over 70% used the computer to gain access to clinical information. However, over three-quarters (79%) of respondents felt that their training on computers was either missing or inadequate. Some 74% of the nurses surveyed who were in post when the computers were introduced to their practice were either hardly consulted prior to installation, or not at all. Despite positive feelings about computerization, practice nurses appear to be getting insufficient or inadequate training and support to fully utilize the technology.

Retinal degeneration in primary-progressive multiple sclerosis: A role for cortical lesions?

Background:

Retinal atrophy in multiple sclerosis (MS) is secondary to optic nerve focal inflammation and to injury of the posterior visual pathway.

Objectives:

To investigate the contribution of cortical lesions (CLs) to retinal pathology in primary-progressive multiple sclerosis (PPMS).

Methods:

We performed a cross-sectional evaluation of 25 patients and 20 controls, relating magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) metrics of visual pathway integrity with parameters derived from spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness, ganglion cell + inner plexiform layer (GCIPL) thickness, and macular volume (MV)).

Results:

Mean RNFL, GCIPL thickness, and MV were significantly reduced in patients compared to controls. MV and GCIPL thickness were significantly correlated with visual acuity. RNFL thinning was associated with thalamus and visual cortex volume (respectively, p = 0.01 and p < 0.05). In addition to thalamic volume, GCIPL thinning was associated with CLs and intracortical lesion number and volume, leucocortical lesion volume (all p ⩽ 0.05) while MV decrease was associated with CLs volume ( p = 0.05) and intracortical lesion number and volume ( p < 0.05).

Conclusion:

Our results suggest that RNFL thinning and GCIPL thinning/MV decrease may be explained by alternative mechanisms including retrograde trans-synaptic degeneration and/or a common pathophysiologic process affecting both the brain with CLs and the retina with neuronal loss.

The EDSS-Plus, an improved endpoint for disability progression in secondary progressive multiple sclerosis

BACKGROUND

The Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) has wide scientific and regulatory precedent but limited ability to detect clinically relevant disability progression in secondary progressive multiple sclerosis (SPMS) patients, partly due to a lack of meaningful measurement of short-distance ambulatory and upper-extremity function.

OBJECTIVE

To present a rationale for a composite endpoint adding the timed 25-foot walk (T25FW) and 9-Hole Peg Test (9HPT) to EDSS for SPMS disability progression assessment.

METHODS

Using the International Multiple Sclerosis Secondary Progressive Avonex Clinical Trial (IMPACT) placebo arm ( n = 215) data, we analyzed disability progression using a novel progression endpoint, "EDSS-Plus," defined as progression on ⩾1 of 3 components (EDSS, T25FW, and/or 9HPT) confirmed ⩾24 weeks apart and with a ⩾20% minimum threshold change for T25FW and 9HPT.

RESULTS

Over 2 years, subjects classified as T25FW, 9HPT (dominant hand), or 9HPT (non-dominant hand) progressors worsened on average by 103.4%, 69.0%, and 59.2%, respectively, while non-progressors' times remained largely unchanged. Using EDSS-Plus, 59.5% of the patients had 24-week confirmed disability progression versus 24.7% (EDSS), 41.9% (T25FW), and 34.4% (9HPT (either hand)) on each component alone.

CONCLUSION

The 24-week confirmed minimum worsening of ⩾20% for T25FW and 9HPT clearly separates SPMS progressors from non-progressors. We propose that EDSS-Plus may represent an improved endpoint to identify SPMS disability progression.

Separation-individuation processes of adolescent children of parents with multiple sclerosis

The current study examines the implications of responsibility and obligation on separationindividuation processes and the appearance of various symptoms of psychological distress in adolescent children of multiple sclerosis (MS) parents. We examined 56 children, between the ages of 10 and 18 years, each with a parent with MS. The results were compared to a control group of 156 children whose parents were healthy. Children's emotions were examined by means of two questionnaires: Youth Self Report (YSR), and Separation Individuation Test of Adolescence (SITA). It was found that children with a MS-affected parent displayed higher levels of depression and anxiety than children from the control group. Furthermore, children in the study group reported a greater degree of separation anxiety, compared to the control group. We conclude with clinical recommendations for developing therapeutic interventions for adolescents to MS-affected parents, as well as for their ill and healthy parents.

GW151226: Observation of Gravitational Waves from a 22-Solar-Mass Binary Black Hole Coalescence

We report the observation of a gravitational-wave signal produced by the coalescence of two stellar-mass black holes. The signal, GW151226, was observed by the twin detectors of the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) on December 26, 2015 at 03:38:53 UTC. The signal was initially identified within 70 s by an online matched-filter search targeting binary coalescences. Subsequent off-line analyses recovered GW151226 with a network signal-to-noise ratio of 13 and a significance greater than 5σ. The signal persisted in the LIGO frequency band for approximately 1 s, increasing in frequency and amplitude over about 55 cycles from 35 to 450 Hz, and reached a peak gravitational strain of 3.4_{-0.9}^{+0.7}×10^{-22}. The inferred source-frame initial black hole masses are 14.2_{-3.7}^{+8.3}M_{⊙} and 7.5_{-2.3}^{+2.3}M_{⊙}, and the final black hole mass is 20.8_{-1.7}^{+6.1}M_{⊙}. We find that at least one of the component black holes has spin greater than 0.2. This source is located at a luminosity distance of 440_{-190}^{+180}  Mpc corresponding to a redshift of 0.09_{-0.04}^{+0.03}. All uncertainties define a 90% credible interval. This second gravitational-wave observation provides improved constraints on stellar populations and on deviations from general relativity.

Recommendations for observational studies of comorbidity in multiple sclerosis

OBJECTIVE

To reach consensus about the most relevant comorbidities to study in multiple sclerosis (MS) with respect to incidence, prevalence, and effect on outcomes; review datasets that may support studies of comorbidity in MS; and identify MS outcomes that should be prioritized in such studies.

METHODS

We held an international workshop to meet these objectives, informed by a systematic review of the incidence and prevalence of comorbidity in MS, and an international survey regarding research priorities for comorbidity.

RESULTS

We recommend establishing age- and sex-specific incidence and prevalence estimates for 5 comorbidities (depression, anxiety, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and diabetes); evaluating the effect of 7 comorbidities (depression, anxiety, hypertension, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, chronic lung disease, and autoimmune diseases) on disability, quality of life, brain atrophy and other imaging parameters, health care utilization, employment, and mortality, including age, sex, race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and disease duration as potential confounders; harmonizing study designs across jurisdictions; and conducting such studies worldwide. Ultimately, clinical trials of treating comorbidity in MS are needed.

CONCLUSION

Our recommendations will help address knowledge gaps regarding the incidence, prevalence, and effect of comorbidity on outcomes in MS.

The challenge of comorbidity in clinical trials for multiple sclerosis

OBJECTIVE

We aimed to provide recommendations for addressing comorbidity in clinical trial design and conduct in multiple sclerosis (MS).

METHODS

We held an international workshop, informed by a systematic review of the incidence and prevalence of comorbidity in MS and an international survey about research priorities for studying comorbidity including their relation to clinical trials in MS.

RESULTS

We recommend establishing age- and sex-specific incidence estimates for comorbidities in the MS population, including those that commonly raise concern in clinical trials of immunomodulatory agents; shifting phase III clinical trials of new therapies from explanatory to more pragmatic trials; describing comorbidity status of the enrolled population in publications reporting clinical trials; evaluating treatment response, tolerability, and safety in clinical trials according to comorbidity status; and considering comorbidity status in the design of pharmacovigilance strategies.

CONCLUSION

Our recommendations will help address knowledge gaps regarding comorbidity that interfere with the ability to interpret safety in monitored trials and will enhance the generalizability of findings from clinical trials to "real world" settings where the MS population commonly has comorbid conditions.

Phase-Sensitive Inversion-Recovery MRI Improves Longitudinal Cortical Lesion Detection in Progressive MS

Previous studies comparing phase sensitive inversion recovery (PSIR) to double inversion recovery (DIR) have demonstrated that use of PSIR improves cross-sectional in vivo detection of cortical lesions (CL) in multiple sclerosis. We studied the utility of PSIR in detection/characterization of accrual of CL over time in a 1-year longitudinal study in primary progressive multiple sclerosis (PPMS) compared to DIR. PSIR and DIR images were acquired with 3T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in 25 patients with PPMS and 19 healthy controls at baseline, and after 1 year in 20 patients with PPMS. CL were classified as intracortical, leucocortical or juxtacortical. Lesion counts and volumes were calculated for both time points from both sequences and compared. Correlations with measures of physical and cognitive disability were determined as well as new CL counts and volumes. Compared to DIR, PSIR led to detection of a higher number of CL involving a larger proportion of patients with PPMS both cross-sectionally (p = 0.006, 88%) and longitudinally (p = 0.007, 95%), and led to the reclassification of a third of CL seen on DIR at each time point. Interestingly, PSIR was more sensitive to new CL accumulation over time compared to DIR. PSIR is a promising technique to monitor cortical damage and disease progression in patients with PPMS over a short-term follow-up.

Quantitative genetic properties of four measures of deformity in yellowtail kingfish Seriola lalandi Valenciennes, 1833

The main aim of this study was to estimate the heritability for four measures of deformity and their genetic associations with growth (body weight and length), carcass (fillet weight and yield) and flesh-quality (fillet fat content) traits in yellowtail kingfish Seriola lalandi. The observed major deformities included lower jaw, nasal erosion, deformed operculum and skinny fish on 480 individuals from 22 families at Clean Seas Tuna Ltd. They were typically recorded as binary traits (presence or absence) and were analysed separately by both threshold generalized models and standard animal mixed models. Consistency of the models was evaluated by calculating simple Pearson correlation of breeding values of full-sib families for jaw deformity. Genetic and phenotypic correlations among traits were estimated using a multitrait linear mixed model in ASReml. Both threshold and linear mixed model analysis showed that there is additive genetic variation in the four measures of deformity, with the estimates of heritability obtained from the former (threshold) models on liability scale ranging from 0.14 to 0.66 (SE 0.32-0.56) and from the latter (linear animal and sire) models on original (observed) scale, 0.01-0.23 (SE 0.03-0.16). When the estimates on the underlying liability were transformed to the observed scale (0, 1), they were generally consistent between threshold and linear mixed models. Phenotypic correlations among deformity traits were weak (close to zero). The genetic correlations among deformity traits were not significantly different from zero. Body weight and fillet carcass showed significant positive genetic correlations with jaw deformity (0.75 and 0.95, respectively). Genetic correlation between body weight and operculum was negative (-0.51, P < 0.05). The genetic correlations' estimates of body and carcass traits with other deformity were not significant due to their relatively high standard errors. Our results showed that there are prospects for genetic selection to improve deformity in yellowtail kingfish and that measures of deformity should be included in the recording scheme, breeding objectives and selection index in practical selective breeding programmes due to the antagonistic genetic correlations of deformed jaws with body and carcass performance.

ANALYSIS OF THE TOPIC STUDY USING 2010 MCDONALD CRITERIA

Introduction

TOPIC (NCT00622700) was designed to evaluate teriflunomide in patients with a first clinical episode suggestive of multiple sclerosis (MS). Teriflunomide 14 mg reduced risk of relapse determining conversion to clinically definite MS by 42.6%, and of new relapse or magnetic resonance imaging lesion by 34.9% vs placebo. After study initiation, the 2005 McDonald criteria were revised, potentially allowing earlier MS diagnosis.

Methods

The 2010 McDonald criteria were applied retrospectively. Patients who received teriflunomide 14 mg or placebo for ≤108 weeks were grouped according to fulfilment of 2010 criteria at baseline. Time to MS was analysed for those not fulfilling the 2010 criteria at baseline. Additional post hoc analyses will evaluate differences in outcomes based on baseline radiological characteristics of reclassified patients.

Results

Patients receiving teriflunomide 14mg (n=214) or placebo (n=197) were analysed. For those not meeting the 2010 criteria (n=163), probability of conversion to MS was 54.1% (14 mg) and 74.4% (placebo). Teriflunomide 14mg reduced the probability of conversion to MS by 39.1% vs placebo. Data regarding time to MS based upon baseline radiological characteristics will be presented.

Conclusions

Teriflunomide demonstrates a consistent treatment effect in patients with MS diagnosed according to differing diagnostic criteria. (Study supported by Genzyme, a Sanofi company).

SAFETY AND TOLERABILITY OF TERIFLUNOMIDE IN CLINICAL STUDIES

Introduction

Teriflunomide, approved for the treatment of relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis, has a well-characterized safety profile based on individual clinical studies. We report pooled safety and tolerability data from four, double-blind, placebo-controlled trials of teriflunomide. Post-approval updates on hair thinning and pregnancy outcomes, sometimes concerns for patients initiating teriflunomide, are reported.

Methods

Data were pooled from phase 2 (NCT01487096) and phase 3 TEMSO (NCT00134563), TOWER (NCT00751881), and TOPIC (NCT00622700) studies. Patients were randomized to receive teriflunomide 14 mg, 7 mg, or placebo. Safety analyses were performed for all patients exposed to teriflunomide.

Results

The pooled dataset included 3044 patients. Commonly reported adverse events (AEs) were in accordance with individual clinical studies, most being transient and mild-to-moderate in intensity. Incidence of hepatic AEs was higher in teriflunomide groups; however, serious hepatic AEs were similar across groups (∼2–3%). Hair thinning was higher in teriflunomide than placebo groups, but typically resolved on treatment without intervention and led to discontinuation in <2% of patients. No structural or functional abnormalities were reported in 42 newborns from teriflunomide-exposed parents.

Conclusions

These data from >6800 patient-years of teriflunomide exposure were consistent with individual studies and no new, unexpected safety signals were observed. (Study supported by Genzyme, a Sanofi company).

Susceptibility of Snails to Infection with Schistosomes is influenced by Temperature and Expression of Heat Shock Proteins

The freshwater snail, Biomphalaria glabrata is the obligate intermediate host for the transmission of the parasitic trematode, Schistosoma mansoni the causative agent of the chronic debilitating neglected tropical disease, schistosomiasis. We showed previously that in juvenile snails, early and significant induction of stress manifested by the expression of stress proteins, Hsp 70, Hsp 90 and reverse transcriptase (RT) of the non- LTR retrotransposon, nimbus, is a characteristic feature of juvenile susceptible NMRI but not resistant BS-90 snails. These latter, however, could be rendered susceptible after mild heat shock at 32°C, revealing that resistance in the BS-90 resistant snail to schistosomes is a temperature dependent trait. Here we tested the hypothesis that maintenance of BS-90 resistant snails at the permissive temperature for several generations affects the resistance phenotype displayed at the non-permissive temperature of 25°C. The progeny of BS-90 snails bred and maintained through several generations (F1 to F4) at 32°C were susceptible to the schistosome infection when returned to room temperature, shedding cercariae at four weeks post-infection. Moreover, the study of expression levels of the heat shock protein (Hsp) 70 protein by ELISA and western blot analysis, showed that this protein is also differentially expressed between susceptible and resistant snails, with susceptible snails expressing more protein than their resistant counterparts after early exposure to wild-type but not to radiation-attenuated miracidia. These data suggested that in the face of global warming, the ability to sustain a reduction in schistosomiasis by using refractory snails as a strategy to block transmission of the disease might prove challenging since non-lethal elevation in temperature, affects snail susceptibility to S. mansoni.

Optical properties of a conjugated-polymer-sensitised solar cell: the effect of interfacial structure

Dye-sensitised solar cells (DSSCs) have sparked considerable interest over two decades. Recently, a method of polymer-wire sensitisation was demonstrated; the polymer is suggested to form a hole transport pathway (wire) following initial charge separation. We predict the optical properties of this polymer in various interfacial configurations, including the effects of chain length and attachment to {100} or {101} TiO2 facets. Contrary to most DSSCs, the {100} facet model best describes the experimental spectrum, predicting a relative thickness of 5.7 ± 0.2 μm, although {101} attachment, if implemented, may improve collection efficiency. Long chains are optimal, and stable attachment sites show minimal differences to absorbance in the major solar emission (visible) band. Combinations of {100}, {101}, and pseudo-bulk TiO2 models in three-parameter fits to experiment confirm the relative importance of the {100} facet.

Risk Factors For the Development of a Mobile Degenerative Spondylolisthesis at L4-L5

OBJECTIVE

The purpose of this study was to identify factors that may be important in determining whether a degenerative spondylolisthesis at L4-L5 is mobile.

SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA

Degenerative scoliosis is a common condition among middle-aged and elderly adults. Sacropelvic morphology and orientation modulate the geometry of the lumbar spine and, consequently, the mechanical stresses at the lumbo-sacral junction. To date, no in vivo data exist to describe the relationship between these pelvic parameters and their association with a mobile spondylolisthesis.

METHOD

Sixty consecutive patients with a degenerative spondylolisthesis (DS) at L4-L5 with adequate imaging were identified. Patient groups were defined on the basis of whether the DS was mobile (Group A) or nonmobile (Group B) when comparing the upright plain lumbar radiograph to the supine magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). We assessed the grade of slip, lumbar lordosis, pelvic parameters, and facet characteristics (angles, tropism, presents of effusion, degenerative score-cartilage and sclerosis values) as well as disc degenerative score (Pfirrmann) at L4-L5.

RESULTS

There were 40 patients in Group A and 20 in Group B. No significant differences were found between groups for pelvic incidence (p = .409), pelvic tilt (p = .476), sacral slope (p = .785), lumbar lordosis (p = .695), degree of facet tropism (p = .38), and magnitude of the facet effusions (p = .01). Facet angle differences between groups approached significance (p = .058). Significant differences between groups were found in cartilage degenerative score (p = .01), facet sclerosis grade (p = .01), and disc degenerative score (p < .0001). In Group A, 10 of 40 (25%) reduced fully and were not apparent on the supine MRI.

CONCLUSIONS

Sagittal pelvic parameters do not play a significant role in differentiating between mobile and nonmobile DS at L4-L5. However, DS does appear to be associated with more sagittally orientated facets, higher Pfirrmann grade, and higher facet cartilage and sclerosis degenerative scores.

Horn-coupled, commercially-fabricated aluminum lumped-element kinetic inductance detectors for millimeter wavelengths

We discuss the design, fabrication, and testing of prototype horn-coupled, lumped-element kinetic inductance detectors (LEKIDs) designed for cosmic microwave background studies. The LEKIDs are made from a thin aluminum film deposited on a silicon wafer and patterned using standard photolithographic techniques at STAR Cryoelectronics, a commercial device foundry. We fabricated 20-element arrays, optimized for a spectral band centered on 150 GHz, to test the sensitivity and yield of the devices as well as the multiplexing scheme. We characterized the detectors in two configurations. First, the detectors were tested in a dark environment with the horn apertures covered, and second, the horn apertures were pointed towards a beam-filling cryogenic blackbody load. These tests show that the multiplexing scheme is robust and scalable, the yield across multiple LEKID arrays is 91%, and the measured noise-equivalent temperatures for a 4 K optical load are in the range 26±6 μK√s.
