Abstract
Previously, we showed that Sox2-Cre;Fam20C(fl/fl) mice in which Fam20C was ubiquitously inactivated had severe defects in dentin, enamel, and bone, along with hypophosphatemia. It remains to be determined if the enamel defects in the mice with universal inactivation of Family with sequence similarity 20-C (FAM20C) were associated with the dentin defects and whether hypophosphatemia in the knockout mice contributed to the enamel defects. In this study, we crossed Fam20C(fl/fl) mice with keratin 14-Cre (K14-Cre) transgenic mice to specifically inactivate Fam20C in the epithelial cells, including the dental epithelial cells that are responsible for forming tooth enamel. X-ray, backscattered scanning electron microscopic, and histological analyses showed that the K14-Cre;Fam20C(fl/fl) mice had severe enamel and ameloblast defects, while their dentin and alveolar bone were not significantly affected. Accordingly, serum biochemistry of the K14-Cre;Fam20C(fl/fl) mice showed normal phosphate and FGF23 levels in the circulation. Analysis of these data indicates that, while FAM20C is a molecule essential to amelogenesis, its inactivation in the dental epithelium does not significantly affect dentinogenesis. Hypophosphatemia makes no significant contribution to the enamel defects in the mice with the ubiquitous deletion of Fam20C.

Abstract
Arrays of metal nanoparticles are considered candidates for improved light-coupling into silicon. In periodic arrays the coherent diffractive coupling of particles can have a large impact on the resonant properties of the particles. We have investigated the photocurrent enhancement properties of Al nanoparticles placed on top of a silicon diode in periodic as well as in random arrays. The photocurrent of the periodic array sample is enhanced relative to that of the random array due to the presence of a Fano-like resonance not observed for the random array. Measurements of the photocurrent as a function of angle, reveal that the Fano-like enhancement is caused by diffractive coupling in the periodic array, which is accordingly identified as an important design parameter for plasmon-enhanced light-coupling into silicon.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease caused by complex interactions of genetic, epigenetic, and environmental factors. For this reason, new approaches are required to clarify the pathogenesis of asthma by systemic review. OBJECTIVE We applied a (1)H-NMR metabolomics approach to investigate the altered metabolic pattern in sera from patients with asthma and sought to identify the mechanism underlying asthma and potential biomarkers. METHOD A global profile of sera from patients with asthma (n = 39) and controls (n = 26) was generated using (1)H-NMR spectroscopy coupled with multivariate statistical analysis. Endogenous metabolites in serum were rapidly measured using the target-profiling procedure. RESULTS Multivariate statistical analysis showed a clear distinction between patients with asthma and healthy subjects. Sera of asthma patients were characterized by increased levels of methionine, glutamine, and histidine and by decreased levels of formate, methanol, acetate, choline, O-phosphocholine, arginine, and glucose. The metabolites detected in the sera of patients with asthma are involved in hypermethylation, response to hypoxia, and immune reaction. Furthermore, the levels of serum metabolites from patients with asthma correlated with asthma severity; in particular, lipid metabolism was altered in patients with lower forced expiratory volume in 1 s percentage (FEV(1)%) predicted values. In addition, potential biomarkers showed strong predictive power in ROC analysis, and the presence of asthma in external validation models was predicted with high accuracy (90.9% for asthma and 100% for control subjects). CONCLUSION & CLINICAL RELEVANCE These data showed that (1)H-NMR-based metabolite profiling of serum may be useful for the effective diagnosis of asthma and a further understanding of its pathogenesis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Students often complain about a lack of teaching of practical skills. This may be a cause for the low attractiveness of surgical disciplines. We therefore established a practical course to improve teaching quality to inspire the students for orthopedic and trauma surgery. METHODS The platforms of the course included the teaching and acquisition of suture techniques, arthroscopy and osteosynthesis techniques. A total of 119 students participated in 9 courses and performed a detailed evaluation. RESULTS The main motivation to participate was (i) to acquire practical skills (93 %), (ii) to learn about orthopaedic and trauma surgery (66 %) and (iii) to facilitate decision-making for the occupational choice (21 %). 94 % judged the quality of the course as "excellent", and all 119 participants indicated that they would recommend the course to other students. 43 of 45 students, who had not yet decided on their occupational choice, indicated that the course stimulated them for a career in orthopaedic and trauma surgery. CONCLUSION This course not only can improve the teaching quality but also can increase the attractiveness of muskuloskeletal surgery.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The balance between survival and death is a key point for regulation of physiology of stem cells. Recently, applications of natural products to enhance efficiencies in culturing and differentiation of stem cells are increasing. Korean mistletoe lectin (Viscum album L. var. coloratum agglutinin, VCA) has been known to be toxic to some cancer cells, but it is still unclear whether VCA has a cytotoxic or indeed a proliferative effect on mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). Here, we have compared effects of VCA in naïve placenta-derived stem cells (PDSCs), immortalized PDSCs and cancer cells (HepG2), and analysed their mechanisms. MATERIALS AND METHODS MTT assay was performed to analyse effects of VCA on naïve PDSCs, immortalized PDSCs and HepG2. FACS, ROS, caspase-3 assay, western blotting and immunofluorescence were performed to detect signalling events involved in self-renewal of the above cell types. RESULTS VCA had cancer cell-specific toxicity to HepG2 cells even with low concentrations of VCA (1-5 pg/ml), toxicity was observed to immortalized PDSCs and HepG2s, while proliferation of naïve PDSCs was significantly increased (P < 0.05). ROS production by VCA treatment in naïve PDSCs was significantly lower compared to controls (P < 0.05). Furthermore, autophagy was activated in naïve PDSCs treated with VCA through increase in type II LC3 and decrease in phosphorylated mTOR. CONCLUSIONS VCA can promote MSC proliferation through an activated autophagic mechanism.

Abstract
AIM This article presents an analysis and review of recent literature with a focus on clinical results after minimally invasive (MIS) total hip arthroplasty (THA) and with special attention to the different approaches currently used. METHODS An online database (Medline) search for clinical trials after THA between 2007 and 2011 was performed with a special focus on prospective controlled randomized trials focusing on THA with a MIS approach. The data were analyzed for pain, blood loss, complications, gait analysis, Harris hip and other scores. RESULTS A total of 24 studies (19 comparative studies) were included in this study with a total of 801 MIS THA cases and 695 conventionally operated hips. Almost every study showed superior results for the MIS group with respect to postoperative pain, blood loss and rehabilitation but these advantages almost totally disappeared after 3-6 months. The complication rate was comparable in both groups. After 3-6 months the clinical scores, such as the Harris hip score did not show any differences between conventional and MIS groups. CONCLUSIONS In this present study all MIS approaches showed advantages over the conventional surgical approach but these benefits disappeared after 3-6 months. With comparable risks for complications, MIS surgical approaches are superior in the early postoperative phase and rehabilitation.

Abstract
PURPOSE Laser-based accelerated proton beams are unsuitable for clinical use because of their broad energy spectra. For this reason, it is essential to employ an energy selection system (ESS). The purpose of this study is to determine optimum parameters of the ESS which uses a varying magnetic field to generate Bragg-peak. METHODS We simulated an accelerated proton beams using radiation pressure acceleration mechanism with carbon-proton mixture target. The density ratio (n = 6) between the protons and the carbon ions is one of optimization parameters in determining the accelerating mechanisms. The ESS was implemented by the Geant4 Monte Carlo toolkit. In order to optimize the hole size and position of the energy selection collimator, and magnetic field at ESS, these parameters were simulated for acquiring energy and dose distributions by changing each values. RESULTS The proton energy distributions had a poly-energetic distribution after passing through the ESS. As the magnetic field was increased, the mean energy of the proton beams also was increased. Also as the hole size was increased, the energy bandwidth of proton passed through the ESS was increased. The hole size and position of the energy selection collimator were effectively optimized to 2 cm and 5 cm from the z-axis, respectively. CONCLUSIONS We simulated laser-accelerated proton beams using ESS for generation of Bragg-peak. Our results suggest that the ESS with magnetic field variation can effectively generate a Bragg-peak suitable for use in proton radiation therapy. Our ESS can be applied to pencil beam scanning proton therapy.

Abstract
AIM To determine whether treatment with the stem cell stimulator Olimpiq® Stem×Cell prevents increase of retinal and renal vascular permeability in alloxan-induced diabetic rats. MATERIALS AND METHODS Two groups of Wistar rats were made diabetic by single intraperitoneal injection of Alloxan. The third, the control group, received vehicle alone. One diabetic group received Olimpiq® Stem×Cell treatment for 4 weeks. The permeability of the blood-retinal barrier (BRB) and renal vessels were measured by the extravasation of fluorescein-labeled bovine serum albumin. RESULTS Six weeks subsequently to Alloxan injection, significantly elevated the tissue fluorescence, the renal vascular leakage and BRB breakdown was demonstrated in the diabetic group, compared to the nondiabetic group. Olimpiq® Stem×Cell treatment significantly reduced the BRB breakdown, tissue fluorescence, and vascular leakage. CONCLUSION Olimpiq® Stem×Cell would be a useful choice of treatment for complications associated with increased vascular permeability of diabetes, such as retinopathy or nephropathy.

Abstract
Bilayer graphene is an attractive platform for studying new two-dimensional electron physics, because its flat energy bands are sensitive to out-of-plane electric fields and these bands magnify electron-electron interaction effects. Theory predicts a variety of interesting broken symmetry states when the electron density is at the carrier neutrality point, and some of these states are characterized by spontaneous mass gaps, which lead to insulating behaviour. These proposed gaps are analogous to the masses generated by broken symmetries in particle physics, and they give rise to large Berry phase effects accompanied by spontaneous quantum Hall effects. Although recent experiments have provided evidence for strong electronic correlations near the charge neutrality point, the presence of gaps remains controversial. Here, we report transport measurements in ultraclean double-gated bilayer graphene and use source-drain bias as a spectroscopic tool to resolve a gap of ∼2 meV at the charge neutrality point. The gap can be closed by a perpendicular electric field of strength ∼15 mV nm(-1), but it increases monotonically with magnetic field, with an apparent particle-hole asymmetry above the gap. These data represent the first spectroscopic mapping of the ground states in bilayer graphene in the presence of both electric and magnetic fields.

Abstract
Rice stripe virus (RSV; genus Tenuivirus) is a serious threat to rice production in Korea (2). In 1965, a disease outbreak was observed on rice in South Korea, with plants showing yellow stripe symptoms (2). Reoccurrence of RSV in rice was observed again in 1980 in Gyeonggi and Chungcheong. In 2001, RSV was estimated to be infecting approximately 4,663 ha of rice in the provinces of Gyeonggi and Gangwha and approximately 5,000 ha of riceland in the provinces of Buan and, Seocheon (3). Proso millet (Panicum miliaceum L.) is grown as a cereal grain crop and used mainly for human food in South Korea (1). In June 2009, proso millet plants that displayed yellow stripe symptoms were collected at Sinjeon-Myeon, Gangjin-Gun, and Jeollanam-do provinces, where an outbreak of RSV in rice was reported. Diseased plants tested positive to RSV with an ELISA Kit (KisanBio, Seoul, Korea). Total RNA was extracted from leaf tissue with an RNeasy Plant Mini Kit (Qiagen Inc., Valencia, CA). RSV coat protein specific-primers were produced (5' TGTGGAACATAGTCCCACAGTAAGT 3'(upstream), 5' CTAAGCCGCAACCATTCCTCCAGT 3'(downstream). Reverse transcription-PCR confirmed the presence of a 494-bp product as predicted for the presence of RSV. The coat protein of RSV isolates collected from proso millet, rice, and foxtail millet in the same area was also sequenced. Results confirmed that phylogenetic relationships were of high homology: 98.9% between RSV isolates from rice and foxtail millet, 99.2% between isolates from rice (GenBank Accession No. JN245626) and proso millet (GenBank Accession No. JN245627); 99.6% between rice and foxtail millet (GenBank Accession No. JN245628); and 99.6% between foxtail millet and proso millet. In addition, sequence comparisons showed 96 to 99% identity with known RSV sequences available in GenBank (Accession No. X53563) (4). To our knowledge, this is the first report of RSV of proso millet in South Korea. The finding of this disease confirms further spread of the virus within the northern part of South Korea and the need for research to develop more effective management options to reduce the impact of RSV in proso millet. Abstract
The number of breast cancer patients who are informed about and have contact with patient self-help groups (SHGs) during their hospital stay varies across hospitals. The aim of this study is to investigate which patient and hospital characteristics contribute to these differences. Multilevel regression analysis was applied, using data on hospital characteristics and data from a patient survey, which catalogued the disease and socio-demographic characteristics of newly diagnosed breast cancer patients, and recorded if they were informed about and had contact with SHGs during their hospital stay. Data from 2639 patients from 82 hospitals were analysed. The odds of being informed about SHGs were significantly lower if patients were treated at a teaching hospital. Patients aged 40 to 59 years significantly more often reported that they were informed about SHGs than patients aged 60 to 69 years. Patients with the highest education certificates significantly more often reported that they both were informed about and have had contact with SHGs. These results suggest that in teaching hospitals, information provided to patients about SHGs is reduced. Furthermore, patients are differentially given information about SHGs and have different levels of contact with SHGs, based on their age and education.

Abstract
The sintered Ca(1-x-y)Dy(x)CeyMnO3 bodies were a single phase with a perovskite structure without any impurity phases. The calculated crystallite sizes of the Ca(1-x-y)Dy(x)CeyMnO3 were in the range of 43.3 to 63.3 nm. The composition significantly affected their microstructural and thermoelectric characteristics. The doped Dy led to both an increase in the electrical conductivity as well as the absolute value of the Seebeck coefficient, resulting in an enhanced power factor. The highest power factor (5.1 x 10(-4) Wm(-1) K(-2)) was obtained for Ca(0.8)Dy(0.2)MnO3 at 800 degrees C. In this study, we systematically discussed the thermoelectric properties of the Ca(1-x-y)Dy(x)CeyMnO3, with respect to the substitution of Dy and/or Ce for Ca.
