Abstract
Stability and sorption of Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) towards water are critical in many applications, and can a priori be modulated through the introduction of suitable organic functional groups on their backbone. We report here the preparation of a series of Zr(iv)-based MOFs functionalized with alkyl and perfluoroalkyl groups and their characterization by X-ray powder diffraction, multi-nuclei ((1)H, (13)C, (19)F) solid state nuclear magnetic resonance analyses, and nitrogen sorption measurements at 77 K. Their water sorption behavior was evaluated at 298 K and related to their physico-chemical features, highlighting both the effect of the confinement and the nature of the functional groups on the hydrophilic/hydrophobic balance.

Abstract
We established a rat model of hyperphosphatemia and investigated the systemic effects of high phosphorus (P). Sprague Dawley rats were randomly divided into high (HP), low (LP), and normal (NP) P groups (N = 12 each), which received injections of fructose diphosphate sodium, or were fed self-manufactured low phosphorus or normal diets, respectively. In each group, 4 rats were sacrificed at the first, third, and sixth week to detect the serum (Scr) and urinary creatinine and P, and calcium (Ca) levels. The HP group's serum P and intact parathyroid hormone (iPTH) were significantly higher than those in the other groups at the first, third, and sixth weeks, (P < 0.05); the LP group's serum P was lower than the NP group's at the third week (P < 0.05), while at the sixth week, the serum P and iPTH were lower (P < 0.05). No significant differences were detected for blood Ca+ (P > 0.05). The HP group's Scr increased (P < 0.01), whereas the fractional excretion decreased (P < 0.05) significantly. Thighbone and lumbar spine bone densities differed significantly between groups in the third week (P < 0.05); LP group densities were lower than NP group measures (P < 0.05). Crystallized stones were not observed microscopically following hematoxylin and eosin staining of the kidney. We successfully established a hyperphosphatemia rat model, and high blood P was found to significantly influence renal function and bone density. These results might provide a foundation to study the effects of hyperphosphatemia in rats.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Whether gray matter impairment occurs in neuromyelitis optica is a matter of ongoing debate, and the association of gray matter impairment with cognitive deficits remains largely unknown. The purpose of this study was to investigate gray matter volume reductions and their association with cognitive decline in patients with neuromyelitis optica. MATERIALS AND METHODS This study included 50 patients with neuromyelitis optica and 50 sex-, age-, handedness-, and education-matched healthy subjects who underwent high-resolution structural MR imaging examinations and a battery of cognitive assessments. Gray matter volume and cognitive differences were compared between the 2 groups. The correlations of the regional gray matter volume with cognitive scores and clinical variables were explored in the patients with neuromyelitis optica. RESULTS Compared with healthy controls (635.9 ± 51.18 mL), patients with neuromyelitis optica (602.8 ± 51.03 mL) had a 5.21% decrease in the mean gray matter volume of the whole brain (P < .001). The significant gray matter volume reduction in neuromyelitis optica affected the frontal and temporal cortices and the right thalamus (false discovery rate correction, P < .05). The regional gray matter volumes in the frontal and temporal cortices were negatively correlated with disease severity in patients with neuromyelitis optica (Alphasim correction, P < .05). Patients with neuromyelitis optica had impairments in memory, information processing speed, and verbal fluency (P < .05), which were correlated with gray matter volume reductions in the medial prefrontal cortex and thalamus (Alphasim correction, P < .05). CONCLUSIONS Gray matter volume reduction is present in patients with neuromyelitis optica and is associated with cognitive impairment and disease severity in this group.

Abstract
AIM Comparative analysis of the effect of antiepileptic drugs on the epileptic (tonic clonic seizure type) patient's serum folate and vitamin B12 concentrations. METHODS Consecutively, 84 cases from September 2010 to September 2014 from the Department of Internal Medicine of our hospital were considered to diagnose as epilepsy nerve. Among which, 49 cases received anti epileptic drug treatment (treatment group), 35 cases received treatment without anti epileptic drugs (non-treatment group); At the same period, 42 nonepileptic patients (control group) underwent the analysis of the difference of serum folate and vitamin B12 concentrations of among the three groups of patients before the test, and at the end of test with the contrast analysis of difference of clinical efficiency and thrombosis rate. RESULTS Serum folic acid level of patients in the treatment group decreased significantly after test, vitamin B12 level was significantly higher, the differences were statistically significant (P<0.05), but folic acid and vitamin B12 concentration of non-treatment group and the control group did not change, and the differences were not statistically significant (P>0.05). Clinical efficiency of treatment group patients was significantly higher than that of the non-treatment group; the incidence of thrombosis was significantly lower than that of the non-treatment group, and the difference was statistically significant (P<0.05). CONCLUSION Antiepileptic drugs can significantly improve clinical efficacy of the epilepsy tonic clonic seizure type patients, which may be related to the decrease of serum levels of folate and vitamin B12-increased concentration.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Lupus nephritis (LN) is one of the most serious complications of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). It is the most common secondary glomerulonephritis leading to end-stage renal disease. AIM The purpose of this study is to evaluate the epidemiology and risk factors of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in Chinese patients with LN. METHODS Clinical, laboratory, renal histopathology, treatment and outcome data were collected and retrospectively analysed in LN patients with or without CKD. RESULTS At the end of the study, 94 (45.63%) patients were identified as having CKD among 206 individuals with renal biopsy-proven LN. Renal function, represented by serum creatinine and estimated glomerular filtration rate, was significantly decreased in the CKD patients (P = 0.008 and P < 0.001, respectively) at the time of the kidney biopsy. Compared with the non-CKD group, significantly increased proportions of hypertension (P < 0.001), serositis (P = 0.042) and anti-histone antibody positivity (P = 0.004) were detected in the CKD patients. Renal pathological activity and chronicity index scores were significantly increased in the CKD group (P < 0.001 for all). Finally, hypertension (hazard ratio (HR) 2.432, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.575-3.754, P < 0.001), anti-histone antibody (HR 2.907, 95% CI 1.837-4.600, P < 0.001), and tubular atrophy (HR 1.248, 95% CI 1.007-1.547, P = 0.043) were independent risk factors for CKD. CONCLUSIONS Hypertension, anti-histone antibody and tubular atrophy are independent risk factors for CKD in Chinese LN patients.

Abstract
Schizophrenia patients have shown altered resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) of the cingulate cortex; however, it is unknown whether rsFCs of the cingulate subregions are differentially affected in this disorder. We aimed to clarify the issue by comparing rsFCs of each cingulate subregion between healthy controls and schizophrenia patients. A total of 102 healthy controls and 94 schizophrenia patients underwent resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging with a sensitivity-encoded spiral-in imaging sequence to reduce susceptibility-induced signal loss and distortion. The cingulate cortex was divided into nine subregions, including the subgenual anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), areas 24 and 32 of the pregenual ACC, areas 24 and 32 of the anterior mid-cingulate cortex (aMCC), posterior MCC (pMCC), dorsal (dPCC) and ventral (vPCC) posterior cingulate cortex (PCC) and retrosplenial cortex (RSC). The rsFCs of each cingulate subregion were compared between the two groups and the atrophy effect was considered. Results with and without global signal regression were reported. Most cingulate subregions exhibited decreased rsFCs in schizophrenia after global signal regression (GSR). Without GSR, only increased rsFC was found in schizophrenia, which primarily restricted to the aMCC, PCC and RSC. Some of these increased rsFCs were also significant after GSR. These findings suggest that GSR can greatly affect between-group differences in rsFCs and the consistently increased rsFCs may challenge the functional disconnection hypothesis of schizophrenia.

Abstract
This study aims to observe the differentiation effects of transforming growth factor β1 (TGF-β1)-transfected bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMMSCs) into the nucleus pulposus-like cells under simulated microgravity conditions. BMMSCs were isolated from the adult rabbits, then cultured and proliferated to the third generation. After transfected by TGF-β1, these MMSCs were incubated in the calcium alginate gel microspheres and rotary cell culture system. The content changes of TGF-β1 inside BMMSCs, as well as the proliferation abilities of BMMSCs, were detected. The immunohistochemistry and toluidine blue staining were performed to detect the type II collagen. The RT-PCR method was performed to detect the expressions of proteoglycan and type II collagen mRNA. Results found that, on the 14th day, the polygonal nucleus pulposus-like cells could be observed. The TGF-β1 content inside the supernatant and the DNA content inside BMMSCs were significantly increased (P<0.05). The immunohistochemistry staining exhibited the positive results about the type II collagen. RT-PCR showed the expressions of proteoglycan and type II collagen mRNA inside BMMSCs. The TGF-β1-transfected BMSCs exhibited the increased synthesizing abilities of proteoglycan and type II collagen under simulated microgravity conditions than the control group.

Abstract
The therapeutic potential of cisplatin in ovarian cancer treatment is restricted by the occurrence of cellular resistance. We aimed to explore the role of SRPK1 in cisplatin resistance related to the long non-coding RNA UCA1 in ovarian cancer cell.Totally, 24 ovarian cancer tissues and 16 normal tissues were used to assess the expression of UCA1 RNA. UCA1 stable transfected SKOV3 cells were established and the ability of cell migration, invasion and cisplatin resistance was assessed. The expression of SRPK1 and apoptosis pathway proteins was then assessed to explore the mechanism. In addition, SRPK1 knockdown cell line was also established and the effects of SRPK1 on cell migration, invasion and cisplatin resistance was evaluated.Elevated expression of UCA1 RNA was identified in ovarian cancer tissues compared with normal tissues. Expression of UCA1 RNA in SKOV3 cells enhanced the cell migration, invasion and cisplatin resistance. Increased expression of SRPK1 and anti-apoptosis proteins were found in SKOV3/pcDNA-UCA1 cells. Knocking-down SRPK1 could partly rescue the effect of UCA1 expression on cell migration, invasion and cisplatin resistance in SKOV3 cells.Elevated expression of UCA1 RNA was found in ovarian cancer tissues. UCA1 can improve the cell migration, invasion and induce cisplatin resistance. SRPK1 and apoptosis pathway proteins may be involved in the effect of UCA1.

Abstract
Background: Chinese women tend to have small and dense breasts and ultrasound is a common method for breast cancer screening in China. However, its efficacy and cost comparing with mammography has not been evaluated in randomised trials. Methods: At 14 breast centres across China during 2008–2010, 13 339 high-risk women aged 30–65 years were randomised to be screened by mammography alone, ultrasound alone, or by both methods at enrolment and 1-year follow-up. Results: A total of 12 519 and 8692 women underwent the initial and second screenings, respectively. Among the 30 cancers (of which 15 were stage 0/I) detected, 5 (0.72/1000) were in the mammography group, 11 (1.51/1000) in the ultrasound group, and 14 (2.02/1000) in the combined group (P=0.12). In the combined group, ultrasound detected all the 14 cancers, whereas mammography detected 8, making ultrasound more sensitive (100 vs 57.1%, P=0.04) with a better diagnostic accuracy (0.999 vs 0.766, P=0.01). There was no difference between mammography and ultrasound in specificity (100 vs 99.9%, P=0.51) and positive predictive value (72.7 vs 70.0% P=0.87). To detect one cancer, the costs of ultrasound, mammography, and combined modality were $7876, $45 253, and $21 599, respectively. Conclusions: Ultrasound is superior to mammography for breast cancer screening in high-risk Chinese women.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The efficacy of any bioartificial liver device requires both rapid production and proper bioactivity of the cells for the bioreactor. The goal of this study was to observe the effect of spinner speed and cell density on the proliferation of microencapsulated immortalized human hepatocytes (HepLL) and human hepatoma (HepG2) cells. MATERIALS AND METHODS Alginate-chitosan microcapsulated HepG2 and HepLL cells were randomly divided into 2 groups, and each group was further divided into 8 subgroups according to embedded cell density and spinner speed. The growth, metabolism, and functions of the encapsulated cells in each group were evaluated. RESULTS In each group, the cell number, ammonium removal, albumin synthesis, and diazepam clearance increased significantly with the spinner speed, whereas embedded cell density had no impact. Albumin synthesis, removal of ammonium, and diazepam clearance were significantly higher in the microencapsulated HepLL groups than in HepG2 cells at any time point, without any significant difference in cell numbers. CONCLUSIONS Spinner culture significantly promoted microencapsulated HepLL and HepG2 cell bioactivity. Wrapped cells had optimal function on day 10 in rolling culture groups. These data show that HepLL cells would be a promising candidate for cell-based liver support therapy.

Abstract
The therapeutic potential of cisplatin in ovarian cancer treatment is restricted by the occurrence of cellular resistance. We aimed to explore the role of SRPK1 in cisplatin resistance related to the long non-coding RNA UCA1 in ovarian cancer cell.Totally, 24 ovarian cancer tissues and 16 normal tissues were used to assess the expression of UCA1 RNA. UCA1 stable transfected SKOV3 cells were established and the ability of cell migration, invasion and cisplatin resistance was assessed. The expression of SRPK1 and apoptosis pathway proteins was then assessed to explore the mechanism. In addition, SRPK1 knockdown cell line was also established and the effects of SRPK1 on cell migration, invasion and cisplatin resistance was evaluated.Elevated expression of UCA1 RNA was identified in ovarian cancer tissues compared with normal tissues. Expression of UCA1 RNA in SKOV3 cells enhanced the cell migration, invasion and cisplatin resistance. Increased expression of SRPK1 and anti-apoptosis proteins were found in SKOV3/pcDNA-UCA1 cells. Knocking-down SRPK1 could partly rescue the effect of UCA1 expression on cell migration, invasion and cisplatin resistance in SKOV3 cells.Elevated expression of UCA1 RNA was found in ovarian cancer tissues. UCA1 can improve the cell migration, invasion and induce cisplatin resistance. SRPK1 and apoptosis pathway proteins may be involved in the effect of UCA1.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to compare three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy (3D CRT) and intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) combined with concurrent chemotherapy for cervical cancer. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 72 patients with Grades IIa-IIIb cervical cancer were randomly divided into two groups, namely, the IMRT group for IMRT plan (primary lesion, 45 Gy/22; the pelvic wall lymphatic drainage area, 50 Gy/22), and the 3D CRT group (conformal pelvic radiotherapy, 45 Gy/22; subsequent supplement of pelvic wall, 6.0 Gy/3). Both groups received concurrent chemotherapy of nedaplatin 30 mg/m2 weekly for six cycles, with an after-loading therapy of 6 Gy/6 each time. RESULTS In the IMRT group, the grade III diarrhea rate was 5.6% and the rate in the 3D CRT group was 30.6%; both groups significantly differed. No significant difference was observed between the overall survival and disease-free survival in first, second, and third years in both groups. CONCLUSION Cervical cancer IMRT can significantly reduce the incidence of acute enteritis. For standard 3D CRT, no significant difference was observed in overall survival and disease-free survival.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the prognostic and predictive values of phospholipase C gamma 1 (PLCG1) expression in patients with locally advanced and resectable oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), who were treated in a prospective, randomized, phase 3 trial evaluating standard treatment with surgery and postoperative radiation preceded or not by induction docetaxel, cisplatin, and 5-fluorouracil (TPF). Immunohistochemical staining for PLCG1 was performed on the biopsies of 232 out of 256 OSCC patients at clinical stage III/IVA; the PLCG1 positive score was determined by immunoreactive scoring system. The survival analysis was performed by Kaplan-Meier method; hazard ratios were calculated using the Cox proportional hazards model. Patients with a low PLCG1 expression had a significantly better overall survival (P=0.022), and a trend towards better disease-free survival (P=0.087), loco-regional recurrence-free survival (P=0.058), distant metastasis-free survival (P=0.053), and a high response rate to TPF induction chemotherapy with regard to clinical response (P=0.052) and pathological response (P=0.061), compared to those with high PLCG1 expression. Our results suggest that PLCG1 expression could be used as a prognostic biomarker for patients with advanced OSCC; however, it was not an adequate predictive biomarker for TPF induction chemotherapy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Polymorphism of rs2293855 in gene MTMR9 has been associated with obesity and metabolic syndrome. We aim to study the association of rs2293855 with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) intermediate phenotypes in a Han Chinese population. METHODS The polymorphism was genotyped in 838 Han Chinese individuals using Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization Time of Flight Mass Spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS); all participants underwent a 75 g oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT); associations between the polymorphism and glucose tolerance, indices of insulin secretion and indices of insulin sensitivity were analyzed. RESULTS The frequency of genotypes and alleles differed significantly between normal glucose tolerance and prediabetes (P=0.043 and P=0.009, respectively). The GG homozygous presented higher fasting plasma glucose (P=0.009), higher 2-hour plasma glucose (P=0.024) and higher glucose area under the curve (AUC, P=0.01). Moreover, the G allele of rs2293855 was associated with glucose intolerance (fasting glucose, P=0.012; glucose AUC, P=0.006; 2-h glucose, P=0.024); it is also associated with decreased indices of insulin sensitivity (fasting insulin, P=0.043; insulin sensitivity index composite, P=0.009; homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance, HOMA-IR, P=0.008) and decreased indices of insulin secretion (HOMA of beta cell function, HOMA-B, P=0.028; insulinogenic index, P=0.003). In addition, the minor allele G was also associated with increased risk of prediabetes (OR=1.463, 95%CI: 1.066-2.009, P=0.018). CONCLUSIONS Polymorphism of rs2293855 in MTMR9 is associated with measures of glucose tolerance, indices of insulin secretion and indices of insulin sensitivity. We also suggest that allele G is likely to increase the risk of prediabetes by influencing both insulin secretion and insulin sensitivity.
