Abstract
Strong spin–orbit coupling fosters exotic electronic states such as topological insulators and superconductors, but the combination of strong spin–orbit and strong electron–electron interactions is just beginning to be understood. Central to this emerging area are the 5d transition metal iridium oxides. Here, in the pyrochlore iridate Pr2Ir2O7, we identify a non-trivial state with a single-point Fermi node protected by cubic and time-reversal symmetries, using a combination of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and first-principles calculations. Owing to its quadratic dispersion, the unique coincidence of four degenerate states at the Fermi energy, and strong Coulomb interactions, non-Fermi liquid behaviour is predicted, for which we observe some evidence. Our discovery implies that Pr2Ir2O7 is a parent state that can be manipulated to produce other strongly correlated topological phases, such as topological Mott insulator, Weyl semimetal, and quantum spin and anomalous Hall states. 5d transition metal iridates provide a platform to study the combined effects of strong spin orbit coupling and strong electronic correlations. Here, the authors find a quadratic band touching in the band structure of Pr2Ir2O7, suggesting it may be tuned to form various strongly correlated topological phases.

Abstract
Nuclear spins in a spin-blocked quantum dot can be pumped and eventually polarized in either of two opposite directions that are selected by applying two different source-drain voltages. Applying a square pulse train as the source-drain voltage can continuously switch the pumping direction alternately. We propose and demonstrate a critical behavior in the polarization after alternate pumping, where the final polarization is sensitive to the initial polarization and pulse conditions. This sensitivity leads to stochastic behavior in the final polarization under nominally the same pumping conditions.

Abstract
Introduction The Physiological and Operative Severity Score for the enumeration of Mortality and Morbidity (POSSUM) and the Portsmouth predictor equation (P-POSSUM) are simple scoring systems used to estimate the risk of complications and death postoperatively. We investigated the use of these scores to predict the postoperative risk in patients undergoing radical cystectomy (RC). Material and methods In this retrospective study, we enrolled 280 patients who underwent RC for invasive bladder cancer between January 2003 and December 2011. Morbidity and mortality were predicted using the POSSUM and P-POSSUM equations. We further assessed the ability of the POSSUM and P-POSSUM to predict the mortality and morbidity risk in RC patients with a Clavien–Dindo classification of surgical complications of grade II or higher. Results The observed morbidity and mortality rates were 58.9% (165 patients) and 1.8% (5 patients), respectively. Predicted morbidity using POSSUM was 49.2% (138 patients) compared to the 58.9% (165 patients) observed (P <0.0001). Compared to the observed death rate of 1.8% (5 patients), predicted mortality using POSSUM and P-POSSUM was 12.1% (34 patients) and 3.9% (11 patients), respectively (P <0.0001 and P = 0.205). The mortality risk estimated by P-POSSUM was not significantly different from the observed mortality rate. Conclusions The results of this study supported the efficacy of POSSUM combined with P-POSSUM to predict morbidity and mortality in patients undergoing RC. Further prospective studies are needed to better determine the usefulness of POSSUM and P-POSSUM for a comparative audit in urological patients undergoing RC.

Abstract
It is important that improvements are made to depth dose distribution in boron neutron capture therapy, because the neutrons do not reach the innermost regions of the human body. Here, we evaluated the dose distribution obtained using multiple-field irradiation in simulation. From a dose volume histogram analysis, it was found that the mean and minimum tumor doses were increased using two-field irradiation, because of improved dose distribution for deeper-sited tumors.

Abstract
To avoid winter frost damage, evergreen coniferous species develop cold hardiness with suitable phenology for the local climate regime. Along the elevational gradient, a genetic cline in autumn phenology is often recognised among coniferous populations, but further quantification of evolutionary adaptation related to the local environment and its responsible signals generating the phenological variation are poorly understood. We evaluated the timing of cold hardening among populations of Abies sachalinensis, based on time series freezing tests using trees derived from four seed source populations × three planting sites. Furthermore, we constructed a model to estimate the development of hardening from field temperatures and the intraspecific variations occurring during this process. An elevational cline was detected such that high-elevation populations developed cold hardiness earlier than low-elevation populations, representing significant genetic control. Because development occurred earlier at high-elevation planting sites, the genetic trend across elevation overlapped with the environmental trend. Based on the trade-off between later hardening to lengthen the active growth period and earlier hardening to avoid frost damage, this genetic cline would be adaptive to the local climate. Our modelling approach estimated intraspecific variation in two model components: the threshold temperature, which was the criterion for determining whether the trees accumulated the thermal value, and the chilling requirement for trees to achieve adequate cold hardiness. A higher threshold temperature and a lower chilling requirement could be responsible for the earlier phenology of the high-elevation population. These thermal responses may be one of the important factors driving the elevation-dependent adaptation of A. sachalinensis.

Abstract
We report peculiar momentum-dependent anisotropy in the superconducting gap observed by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy in BaFe2(As1-xPx)2 (x = 0.30, Tc = 30 K). Strongly anisotropic gap has been found only in the electron Fermi surface while the gap on the entire hole Fermi surfaces are nearly isotropic. These results are inconsistent with horizontal nodes but are consistent with modified s± gap with nodal loops. We have shown that the complicated gap modulation can be theoretically reproduced by considering both spin and orbital fluctuations.

Abstract
AIM This study aimed to test the accuracy and precision of measurements of three-dimensional (3D) digital models from the pre-dentition period using a noncontact 3D measurement system (3D scanner) versus the gold standard method of direct measurements using a digital caliper on plaster models. MATERIALS AND METHODS Ten pairs of plaster models were obtained from children during the predentition period. Linear measurements were performed using both methods. Three operators were trained in the use of both methods for this study. Measurements were performed with a minimum 2-week interval between measurements in a randomly chosen order. RESULTS The mean difference between the measured values using the two methods was <0.2 mm for each measurement. There was no linearity in the measurements using pre-dentition digital models. An ANOVA Gage R&R analysis revealed that there was no significant operator difference (P < 0.307). The rate of variation of the 3D scanner over the total variation was 2.8%. The ICC was 0.982 (P< 0.001), suggesting excellent interoperator agreement. CONCLUSION The results suggest that measurements of digital 3D pre-dentition models are highly accurate and precise, and also comparable to measurements using the gold standard method.

Abstract
Granular cell tumors (GCTs) are histologically characterized by polygonal neoplastic cells with abundant eosinophilic cytoplasmic granules. In humans, these cells are considered to be derived from Schwann cells, and the cytoplasmic granules are assumed to be autophagosomes or autophagolysosomes. However, the origin and nature of the cytoplasmic granules in canine GCTs have not been well characterized. The present study examined 9 canine lingual GCTs using immunohistochemistry, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and cell culture and xenotransplantation experiments. In some cases, the tumor cells expressed S100, CD133, and desmin. The cytoplasmic granules were positive for LC3, p62, NBR1, and ubiquitin. TEM revealed autophagosome-like structures in the cytoplasm of the granule-containing cells. The cultured GCT cells were round to spindle shaped and expressed S100, nestin, Melan-A, CD133, LC3, p62, NBR1, and ubiquitin, suggesting that they were of neural crest origin, redifferentiated into melanocytes, and exhibited upregulated autophagy. The xenotransplanted tumors consisted of spindle to polygonal cells. Only a few cells contained cytoplasmic granules, and some had melanin pigments in their cytoplasm. The xenotransplanted cells expressed S100, nestin, Melan-A, and CD133. P62 and ubiquitin were detected, regardless of the presence or absence of cytoplasmic granules, while LC3 and NBR1 were detected only in the neoplastic cells containing cytoplasmic granules. These findings suggest that some xenotransplanted cells redifferentiated into melanocytes and that autophagy was upregulated in the cytoplasmic granule-containing cells. In conclusion, canine lingual GCTs originate from the neural crest and develop cytoplasmic granules via autophagy. In addition, the microenvironment of GCT cells affects their morphology.

Abstract
Two examples of Campylobacter upsaliensis RM3195 and JV21 strains are shown to carry putative type III restriction (res)-modification (mod) enzyme gene clusters, following genome sequence analyses. It is suggested that the cluster is composed of at least three structural genes, res, internal methylase gene and mod, in the strains, based on the nucleotide sequence information. A ribosome binding site, a putative promoter consisting of a consensus sequence at the -10-like structure and a semiconserved T-rich region and a putative intrinsic p-independent transcriptional terminator were identified for the gene cluster in the two strains. Using two primer pairs, f-/r-res and f-/r-mod, 34 of 41 C. upsaliensis isolates generated two expected amplicons of the res and mod gene segments, and using another primer pair, the same number of isolates also generated an amplicon of the res and mod gene segments cluster, including the third internal methylase gene. Thus, C. upsaliensis isolates frequently carried putative type III R-M gene clusters, encoding the three enzymes. Interestingly, two possible overlaps were identified within the three tandem structural genes. In addition, the type III R-M gene cluster loci appear to be very similar among the C. upsaliensis isolates and very different from other thermophilic campylobacters.
