Abstract
Fearful behavioral responses to handling (temperament) are undesirably associated with ADG and meat quality in infrequently handled Bos indicus cattle. It has never been assessed whether these relationships exist in calmer Bos taurus breeds in systems where handling is more frequent. Such systems predominate in some countries where beef production is a major agricultural activity. During fattening, 144 crossbred cattle from Limousin and Aberdeen Angus sires were assessed for temperament using 4 approaches: response to movement along a race (race score; 4 occasions), restraint in a crush (crush score; 4 occasions), flight speed from the crush (flight speed; 4 occasions), and isolation in a pen with a human (isolation score; 1 occasion in yr 1, 2 occasions in yr 2). Measurements of ADG were made between birth and slaughter and between 16 and 18 mo of age during fattening. Fattening occurred indoors on a complete mixed diet fed for ad libitum intake. Meat quality was measured by pH, color, and Volodkevitch shear force and by a sensory panel. The repeatability of temperament traits was 0.17 (race score), 0.35 (crush score), 0.51 (flight speed), and 0.36 (isolation score). The proportion of the total variance of temperament traits attributable to the sire and the social group was low (0.003 to 0.402). However, the sire did affect behavior in all tests apart from the crush score (ranging from P = 0.02 to P < 0.001). Correlations between behavior in the different tests (ranging from r = 0.21 to 0.54, and P = 0.02 to P < 0.001) apart from between-flight speed and isolation score indicate that fearful behavior was consistently shown across assessment methods. A calm response in the crush score test was associated with a greater ADG during fattening (P = 0.05), whereas a calm response during the isolation test was associated with a greater ADG in cold carcass weight (P = 0.02). Animals with a calm isolation score had less tender meat as judged by the sensory panel (P = 0.03), but no other effects were apparent between temperament and meat quality measures, although several tendencies (0.06 ≤ P ≤ 0.10) were found. Temperament did not appear to relate to meat quality in this study of frequently handled Bos taurus genotypes, which is in contrast to other studies using different beef production systems. Genetic correlations between temperament and meat quality under these conditions could, although not measured in this study, still exist in the absence of phenotypic correlations.

Abstract
IntroductionCertain studies in 1986 & 2004 reported that recording of physical examination carried out on admission by psychiatric trainees to be ‘uniformly poor’ to variable’.1AimsThe aim was to re-audit the recording of performing a physical examination on psychiatric inpatients at the time of admission.ObjectiveTo identify the reasons for the inability to physically examine psychiatric patients on admission.MethodsWe reviewed 30 case notes retrospectively each time, following admission, data was collected in December 2008 and June 2009. Ten patients from each ward (3 wards) were selected randomly.ResultsThe percentage of patients having a physical examination on admission rose from 67% in December 2008 to 83% in July 2009. 13% of patients each were examined the next day, leaving 20% and 4% of the patients respectively, who were not examined within 72 hours of admission. The general trend (full & partial examination) in July 2009 was improving when compared to December 2009, with general inspection being done in 66% as compared to 56%, cardio-vascular examination 94% as compared to 77%, Respiratory examination 83% from 76%and central nervous system in 83% as compared to 63%. The rate of abdominal examination and baseline blood tests dropped from 73% to 67% and 93% to 73% respectively. 73% had baseline ECG in 2009 compared to 60% in 2008.ConclusionsWe are also looking at the availability of staff and examination equipments on the wards and suggest this should be the aim of future studies.

Abstract
The 2009 European Guidelines on Diagnosis and Treatment of Pulmonary Hypertension have been adopted for Germany. The guidelines contain detailed recommendations for the diagnosis of pulmonary hypertension. However, the practical implementation of the European Guidelines in Germany requires the consideration of several country-specific issues and already existing novel data. This requires a detailed commentary to the guidelines, and in some aspects an update y appears necessary. In June 2010, a Consensus Conference organized by the PH working groups of the German Society of Cardiology (DGK), the German Society of Respiratory Medicine (DGP) and the German Society of Pediatric Cardiology (DGPK) was held in Cologne, Germany. This conference aimed to solve practical and controversial issues surrounding the implementation of the European Guidelines in Germany. To this end, a number of working groups was initiated, one of which was specifically dedicated to non-invasive diagnosis of PH. This commentary summarizes the results and recommendations of the working group on treatment of PAH.

Abstract
We investigate the electrical conductance of long, high-mobility quantum wires formed by the split-gate technique, which allows for adjustment of the wire width and the number of one-dimensional electron subbands, n. In wires with 3<or=n<or=8, a logarithmic temperature dependence of the conductance is observed for 1<T<10 K, which reaches as much as 30% of the Drude conductance. In even narrower wires, the logarithmic dependence changes to a power-law variation. Our observations are shown to be in good agreement with recent theoretical studies, which attribute the logarithmic term to interaction effects in a weakly disordered quasi-one-dimensional conductor. This interaction correction is associated with the emergence of a crossover from a quasi-one-dimensional weakly disordered Fermi liquid to a multichannel Luttinger liquid.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine the risk of subsequent sepsis in individuals with coeliac disease. DESIGN We used Swedish national health registers to identify 15 325 individuals with a diagnosis of coeliac disease (1964-2003) and 14 494 inpatient reference individuals. Cox regression estimated the hazard ratios (HRs) for subsequent sepsis. RESULTS Compared with inpatient reference individuals, individuals with coeliac disease were at increased risk of sepsis (HR = 1.6, 95% confidence interval (95% CI) = 1.2 to 1.9, p<0.001). The highest risk estimates were seen for pneumococcal sepsis (HR = 2.5, 95% CI = 1.2 to 5.1, p = 0.014). Individuals with coeliac disease diagnosed in childhood were not at increased risk of subsequent sepsis (HR = 1.0, 95% CI = 0.6 to 1.9, p = 0.908). When individuals with coeliac disease were compared with reference individuals from the general population, coeliac disease was associated with an increased risk of sepsis (HR = 2.6, 95% CI = 2.1 to 3.0, p<0.001). The HR for pneumococcal sepsis was 3.9 (95% CI = 2.2 to 7.0, p<0.001). In this comparison, children with coeliac disease were also at an increased risk of sepsis (HR = 1.8, 95% CI = 1.2 to 2.7, p = 0.003). CONCLUSION This study showed a modestly increased risk of sepsis in patients with coeliac disease with the highest risk for pneumococcal sepsis. This risk increase was limited to those with coeliac disease diagnosed in adulthood. Potential explanations include hyposplenism, increased mucosal permeability and an altered composition of the intestinal glycocalyx in individuals with coeliac disease.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The conventional job descriptions of professionals within the NHS need to evolve in order to meet increasingly stringent targets and demands. One innovation is the introduction of a physiotherapist-led arthroplasty follow-up clinic. We present an audit of 1000 appointments to this clinic. PATIENTS AND METHODS A total of 865 patients were seen with 933 arthroplasties over an 8-month period; 135 appointments were not attended. Prospective data were collected at each attendance. RESULTS Less than 7.5% of patients required re-referral to an orthopaedic consultant, of which 36% were for consideration for further joint replacement. The cost of a physiotherapy appointment was pound4.97 compared to pound5.04 for a traditional orthopaedic assessment. By reducing the number of follow-up patients seen in orthopaedic clinics, we estimate that each consultant would be able to see two additional new patients per week. CONCLUSIONS Assessment of arthroplasty follow-up outside of the traditional orthopaedic clinic setting is a time-effective alternative; however, the cost-benefit and educational impact is less clear.

Abstract
An eradication program for introduced feral cats, using sodium fluoroacetate (1080) bait, was planned on Ascension Island to help breeding seabird populations to recover. We investigated the likelihood of mortality and the occurrence of residual 1080 in the ‘non-target’ Ascension land crab (Gecarcinus lagostoma) through simulating ‘realistic’ and ‘worst case’ exposure to 1080 bait. Crabs feeding on 1080 baits ingested an estimated maximum of 9–56 mg 1080 (kg bodyweight)–1 and although two of 32 treatment crabs died, this mortality was not attributed to 1080 poisoning but to other, unknown, causes. Our results suggest that G. lagostoma has relatively low susceptibility to acute toxic effects of 1080. Most residual 1080 was eliminated rapidly from crab tissue, with concentrations of 0.006–0.070 mg (kg bodyweight)–1 measured in crab claw/leg tissue 9–11 days after exposure. Concentrations of 0.200 and 0.650 mg (kg bodyweight)–1 were measured in the claw tissue of two crabs that died from other causes on the third day of exposure to 1080, indicating potential for secondary exposure of sensitive scavengers or predators of 1080-exposed crabs. We recommend a moratorium on human consumption of all crabmeat for a withholding period following the eradication program. The withdrawal period should be defined by further research on the longevity of 1080 in crab tissues, and be confirmed by monitoring of residues in crabs after baiting.

Abstract
5518 Background: Objectives: Determine safety and estimate efficacy of a novel taxane/platinum chemotherapy (CTX) doublet in conjunction with bevacizumab, as first-line treatment of advanced cancer of the ovary, peritoneum or fallopian tube (FT), after initial debulking surgery. Methods: Treatment: 6 cycles of oxaliplatin (O) (85 mg/m2), docetaxel (D) (75 mg/m2) and bevacizumab (B) (15 mg/kg) Q3W, followed by maintenance B (15 mg/kg Q3W) to complete one year of therapy. Pts were treated until disease progression, unacceptable toxicity, prolonged treatment delay, death, or refusal to continue on study. The primary efficacy endpoint is PFS at 12 months. Results: As of 30 Nov 06, 59 pts (median age 58) were enrolled. Primary sites of disease included 47 ovary, 7 peritoneum, 4 FT. Tumors were mostly poorly differentiated (70%) with a serous adenocarcinoma initial pathology type (81%). Most pts were stage IIIC (40) or IV (17). 64% of pts. were optimally debulked. GOG PS was 0–1 in 56 pts. 58 pts were treated with at least one cycle of CTX. 22 pts. completed six cycles of CTX + B; 14 of these have begun B maintenance Rx. Safety data in available on a total of 283 patient-cycles. Of the 57 pts. with adverse event (AE) data available, 31 (54%) reported at least one grade 3–4 AE, 9 (16%) at least one serious AE (SAE), 54 at least one AE related to CTX (O or D), and 45 reported at least one AE related to B. There have been 8 SAEs related to CTX (O or D): febrile neutropenia (FN) (2), chest pain (1), dehydration (1), lymphopenia (1), neutropenia (1), peripheral sensory neuropathy (PSN) (1), palpitations (1). There have been 7 SAEs related to B: chest pain, colonic fistula, dehydration, FN, palpitations, PSN, vertigo (1 each). There were no B-associated colonic perforations. Of the 59 subjects, 31 (53%) had measurable disease at baseline. One of 31 patients has confirmed progression of disease. Conclusions: This preliminary data supports feasibility of this novel regimen, with an acceptable safety profile. As of December 2006, 75 patients have been enrolled. Updated safety and preliminary efficacy (RR) data will be presented. No significant financial relationships to disclose.
