Abstract
AIM To obtain information about the impact of oral health status on the quality of life in older adults in Central China, and furthermore, to investigate the influence of various demographic and socio-economic factors on oral health related quality of life (OHRQoL). METHODS This study comprised a stratified random sample of 1,000 older adults in Central China. Questionnaires including demographic factors, education and income level, denture wearing status and Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP)-14 were used in a face-to-face interview. RESULTS Of the study population 82% stated that they had some forms of problems related to their quality of life. The mean value of the simple count and single summary item scores for OHIP-14 were 0.47 (sd 0.50) and 6.83 (sd 6.84) respectively for the entire study population. "Uncomfortable to eat" and "taste worse" were the two most common problems reported using the simple count method for OHIP-14, while the "physical pain" being the highest scored domain of the measure. When the effect of all independent variables was analysed in multivariate analysis, education level and denture wearing status were significantly (p < 0.05) associated with the OHRQoL measure. CONCLUSIONS In this Chinese older adult sample, education level and denture wearing status were related to having oral problems as estimated using the OHIP-14.

Abstract
STUDY QUESTION Is the association between paternal age at birth and offspring leukocyte telomere length (LTL) an artifact of early life socioeconomic status (SES)? SUMMARY ANSWER Indicators of early life SES did not alter the relationship between paternal age at birth and offspring LTL among a population of white female nurses. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY Telomere length is considered a highly heritable trait. Recent studies report a positive correlation between paternal age at birth and offspring LTL. Maternal age at birth has also been positively associated with offspring LTL, but may stem from the strong correlation with paternal age at birth. STUDY DESIGN, SIZE AND DURATION The Nurses' Health Study (NHS) is an ongoing prospective cohort study of 121 700 female registered nurses who were enrolled in 1976. Great effort goes into maintaining a high degree of follow-up among our cohort participants (>95% of potential person-years). In 1989-1990, a subset of 32 826 women provided blood samples from which we selected participants for several nested case-control studies of telomere length and incident chronic disease. We used existing LTL data on a total of 4250 disease-free women who also reported maternal and paternal age at birth for this study. PARTICIPANTS/MATERIALS, SETTING AND METHODS Nested case-control studies of stroke, myocardial infarction, cancers of the breast, endometrium, skin, pancreas and colon, as well as colon adenoma, were conducted within the blood sub-cohort. Each study used the following study design: for each case of a disease diagnosed after blood collection, a risk-set sampling scheme was used to select from one to three controls from the remaining participants in the blood sub-cohort who were free of that disease when the case was diagnosed. Controls were matched to cases by age at blood collection (± 1 year), date of blood collection (± 3 months), menopausal status, recent postmenopausal hormone use at blood collection (within 3 months, except for the myocardial infarction case-control study), as well as other factors carefully chosen for each individual study. The current analysis was limited to healthy controls. We also included existing LTL data from a small random sample of women participating in a cognitive sub-study. LTL was measured using the quantitative PCR-based method. Exposure and covariate information are extracted from biennial questionnaires completed by the participants. MAIN RESULTS AND THE ROLE OF CHANCE We found a strong association between paternal age at birth and participant LTL (P = 1.6 × 10(-5)) that remained robust after controlling for indicators of early life SES. Maternal age at birth showed a weak inverse association with participant LTL after adjusting for age at blood collection and paternal age at birth (P = 0.01). We also noted a stronger association between paternal age at birth and participant LTL among premenopausal than among postmenopausal women (P(interaction) = 0.045). However, this observation may be due to chance as premenopausal women represented only 12.6% (N = 535) of the study population and LTL was not correlated with age at menopause, total or estrogen-only hormone therapy (HT) use suggesting that changes in in vivo estrogen exposure do not influence telomere length regulation. LIMITATIONS AND REASONS FOR CAUTION The women in our study are not representative of the general US female population, with an underrepresentation of non-white and low social class groups. Although the interaction was not significant, we noted that the paternal age at birth association with offspring LTL appeared weaker among women whose parents did not own their home at the time of the participant's birth. As telomere dynamics may differ among individuals who are most socioeconomically deprived, SES indicators may have more of an influence on the relationship between paternal age at birth and offspring LTL in such populations. WIDER IMPLICATIONS OF THE FINDINGS As of yet, our and prior studies have not identified childhood or adult characteristics that confound the paternal age at birth association with offspring LTL, supporting the hypothesis that offspring may inherit the longer telomeres found in sperm of older men. The biological implications of the paternal age effect are unknown. A recent theory proposed that the inheritance of longer telomere from older men may be an adaptive signal of reproductive lifespan, while another theory links telomere length attrition to female reproductive senescence. However, we are unaware of any data to substantiate a relationship between paternal age at birth and daughter's fertility. Generalizability of our study results to other white female populations is supported by prior reports of paternal age at birth and offspring telomere length. Furthermore, a confounding relationship between paternal or maternal age at birth and SES was not observed in a study of SES and telomere length. Abstract
Angus × Gelbvieh cows with 2 to 3 previous pregnancies were used to evaluate effects of maternal nutrient restriction on offspring adipose tissue morphology at standard production endpoints. At 45 d after AI to a single sire, pregnancy was confirmed and cows randomly allotted into groups and fed a control (Con, 100% of NRC recommendations), nutrient-restricted (NR, 70% of Con diet), or nutrient-restricted + protein-supplemented (NRP, 70% of Con + essential AA supply to the small intestine equal to Con) diet. At d 185 of gestation, cows were commingled and received the Con diet thereafter. Bull calves were castrated at 2 mo of age. Calves were weaned at 210 d, backgrounded for 28 d, and then placed in the feedlot for 195 d. Steers and heifers were slaughtered at an average 12th-rib fat thickness of 7.6 mm. Adipose tissue from selected depots was collected for adipocyte size analysis. There was no significant difference in BW or BCS between Con, NRP, and NR cows at d 45 of gestation, which averaged 489.7 ± 17.7 kg and 5.35 ± 0.13, respectively. At d 185 of gestation, Con and NRP groups had similar BW (566.1 ± 14.8 and 550.2 ± 14.8 kg) and BCS (6.34 ± 0.27 and 5.59 ± 0.27), but NR cows exhibited reduced (P < 0.05) BW (517.9 ± 14.8 kg) and BCS (4.81 ± 0.27). Among offspring (steers and heifers) at slaughter, there were no significant differences in BW or organ weights among treatment groups. Yield grade was reduced (P < 0.05) and semitendinosus weight/HCW tended (P = 0.09) to be reduced in NR offspring compared with Con and NRP offspring. Average adipocyte diameter was increased (P < 0.05) in subcutaneous, mesenteric, and omental adipose tissue and tended (P = 0.09) to increase in perirenal adipose tissue in NR compared with Con offspring with NRP offspring adipocyte diameter being either intermediate or similar to Con calves. The adipocyte size alterations observed in NR offspring were confirmed by DNA concentration of the adipose tissue depots. There also was an increased mRNA expression (P < 0.05) of fatty acid transporter 1 in subcutaneous adipose tissue from NR offspring compared with Con and NRP offspring. Nutritional restriction during early and mid gestation increased or tended to increase (P < 0.09) adipocyte diameter in all adipose tissue depots in finished steer and heifer calves.

Abstract
A sensitive protocol based on thin-layer chromatography (TLC) was developed to screen qualitatively bile salt hydrolase (BSH)-active lactobacilli. The sodium salts of glycocholic acid and taurocholic acid were used as substrates, and bacterial BSH activity was confirmed by detecting cholic acid as a product of the bile conjugates using a TLC assay with direct visual observation. Forty-five lactobacilli isolated from human fecal samples were tested for BSH activity by the TLC assay, a conventional plate assay, and a quantitative colorimetric assay. With the TLC and quantitative colorimetric assays, the same 24 BSH-positive strains were detected. No false-positive or false-negative results were detected by the TLC assay. However, only 20 BSH-positive strains were detected with the conventional plate assay. Compared with the conventional plate assay, the TLC assay is more sensitive for the detection of BSH activity of lactobacilli and, thus, more suitable for screening of BSH-active lactobacilli of human origin.

Abstract
Background: Maternal obesity is linked with offspring obesity and type 2 diabetes. Skeletal muscle (SM) insulin resistance is central to the development of diabetes. Adenosine monophosphate (AMP)-activated protein kinase (AMPK) is inhibited in SM of fetuses born to obese mothers. Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of maternal metformin administration on AMPK activity and reversion of adverse changes in offspring SM of obese mice. Design: Female weanling C57BL/6J mice received either control diet (CON, 6 mice) or high-fat diet (HFD; OB, 12 mice) for 8 weeks before mating. After mating, mice continued receiving their respective CON or OB diets. In addition, 6 of those 12 mice fed with fat diet also received metformin administration (2 mg per ml in drinking water) throughout gestation and lactation (MET). After weaning at postnatal 21 days, offspring were fed a HFD to mimic a postnatal obesogenic environment until necropsy. Results: Mothers receiving the fat diet developed obesity. OB offspring showed higher adiposity than CON and MET offspring. AMPK phosphorylation was lower in SM of OB offspring. β-Catenin and myogenic regulatory factors, MyoD and myogenin, were downregulated in OB muscle, whereas the adipogenic marker, peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ, was upregulated compared with CON muscle. Metformin administration prevented these changes in OB offspring SM. OB but not MET offspring demonstrated glucose intolerance. Mitochondrial content decreased, and activities of citrate synthase and β-hydroxyacyl-CoA dehydrogenase also decreased in OB offspring SM, whereas they were recovered in MET offspring SM. Conclusion: Maternal metformin administration improves SM development in OB offspring.

Abstract
Testosterone is a key hormone regulating animal growth and development, which promotes skeletal muscle growth and inhibits fat deposition; however, the underlying mechanisms remain poorly defined. Because canonical Wingless and Int/β-catenin signaling promotes myogenesis, we hypothesized that testosterone regulates myogenesis through enhancing the β-catenin signaling pathway and the expression of its targeted genes. Muscle-derived stem cells were prepared from the skeletal muscle of fetal calf at day 180 of gestation and treated with or without trenbolone (10 nM), a synthetic analog of testosterone, in a myogenic medium. Trenbolone treatment increased the protein levels of MyoD and myosin heavy chain, as well as the androgen receptor content. The myogenic effect of trenbolone was blocked by cyproterone acetate, a specific inhibitor of androgen receptor, showing that the myogenic effect of trenbolone was mediated by the androgen receptor. Immunoprecipitation showed that androgen receptor and β-catenin formed a complex, which was increased by trenbolone treatment. Trenbolone activated adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase, which might phosphorylate β-catenin at Ser552, stabilizing β-catenin. Indeed, both cytoplasmic and nuclear β-catenin levels were increased after trenbolone treatment. As a result, β-catenin-mediated transcriptional activity was enhanced by trenbolone treatment. In conclusion, these data provide evidence that testosterone increases cellular β-catenin content which promotes the expression of β-catenin-targeted genes and myogenesis in the muscle-derived stem cells of cattle.

Abstract
Intra-body communication (IBC) is a new, emerging, short-range and human body based communication methodology. It is a technique to network various devices on human body, by utilizing the conducting properties of human tissues. For currently fast developed Body area network(BAN)/Body sensor network(BSN), IBC is believed to have advantages in power consumption, electromagnetic radiation, interference from external electromagnetic noise, security, and restriction in spectrum resource. In this article, the authors propose an improved mathematical model, which includes both electrical properties and proportion of human tissues, for IBC on a human limb. By solving the mathematical model analytically on four-layer system (skin, fat, muscle, and bone) and conducting in-vivo experiment, a comparison has been conducted.

Abstract
Enhancing muscle growth while reducing fat accumulation improves the efficiency of animal production. The fetal stage is crucial for skeletal muscle development. Fetal muscle development involves myogenesis, adipogenesis, and fibrogenesis from mesenchymal multipotent cells (MC), which are negatively affected by maternal nutrient deficiencies. Enhancing myogenesis increases the lean-to-fat ratio of animals, enhancing intramuscular adipogenesis increases intramuscular fat that is indispensible for the superior eating properties of meat because fat is the major contributor to meat flavor. The promotion of fibrogenesis leads to the accumulation of connective tissue, which contributes to the background toughness of meat and is undesirable. Thus, it is essential to regulate MC differentiation to enhance lean growth and improve meat quality. To date, our understanding of mechanisms regulating the lineage commitment of MC is limited. In this review, we first discuss the impact of maternal nutrient deficiency on fetal development, offspring body composition, and meat quality. Because maternal nutrition affects fetal muscle through altering MC differentiation, we then review several important extracellular morphogens regulating MC differentiation, including hedgehog, Wingless and Int (Wnt), and bone morphogenic proteins. Possible involvement of epigenetic modifications associated with histone deacetylases class IIa and histone acetyltransferase, p300, in MC differentiation is also discussed.

Abstract
Stimulant-associated growth deficits in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have long been a concern. We chose 146 school age children diagnosed with ADHD being treated with methylphenidate (MPH) and 29 drug-free ADHD children, and followed them up for 2-4 years. We recorded the changes in height and weight after long-term methylphenidate treatment and analyzed the influence of confounding factors to growth in height, weight, and height velocity. The change of the gap between patients' height and mean height in the methylphenidate group was -1.86+/-0.82 cm ( P<0.001); in controls it was -0.26+/-0.51 cm ( P<0.05). The changes of height standard deviation score (SDS) in the methylphenidate group and controls were -0.14+/-0.23 SD ( P<0.001) and +0.05+/-0.10 SD ( P<0.05), respectively. The differences between the 2 groups were significant ( P<0.001). Both correlation and regression analyses indicated that the duration of treatment contributed significantly to the variance in change of height ( P<0.001). The height velocity was significantly attenuated in the first year. The change of the gap between the patients' weight and weight for height after methylphenidate was -0.14+/-1.25 kg ( P>0.05). From this study, a small but significant deceleration of height velocity has been identified as a long-term side effect of methylphenidate, the magnitude of the height deficit is related to the duration of treatment. Methylphenidate had no significant influence on weight and BMI values.

Abstract
Intra-Body Communication(IBC) is a short range "wireless" communication technique appeared in recent years. This technique relies on the conductive property of human tissue to transmit the electric signal among human body. This is beneficial for devices networking and sensors among human body, and especially suitable for wearable sensors, telemedicine system and home health care system as in general the data rates of physiologic parameters are low. In this article, galvanic coupling type IBC application on human limb was investigated in both its mathematical model and related experiments. The experimental results showed that the proposed mathematical model was capable in describing the galvanic coupling type IBC under low frequency. Additionally, the calculated result and experimental result also indicated that the electric signal induced by the transmitters of IBC can penetrate deep into human muscle and thus, provide an evident that IBC is capable of acting as networking technique for implantable devices.

Abstract
Intra-body communication (IBC) is a new, different "wireless" communication technique based on the human tissue. This short range "wireless" communication technology provides an alternative solution to wearable sensors, home health system, telemedicine and implanted devices. The development of the IBC enables the possibilities of providing less complexity and convenient communication methodologies for these devices. By regarding human tissue as communication channel, IBC making use of the conductivities properties of human tissue to send electrical signal from transmitter to receiver. In this paper, the authors proposed a new mathematical model for galvanic coupling type IBC based on a human limb. Starting from the electromagnetic theory, the authors treat human tissue as volume conductor, which is in analogous with the bioelectric phenomena analysis. In order to explain the mechanism of galvanic coupling type technique of IBC, applying the quasi-static approximation, the governing equation can be reduced to Laplace Equation. Finally, the analytical model is evaluated with on-body measurement for testing its performance. The comparison result shows that the developed mathematical model can provide good approximation for galvanic coupling type IBC on human limb under low operating frequencies.

Abstract
Obesity in pregnant women is a growing public health concern. The placenta is a source of cytokines which can induce maternal gestational insulin resistance and alter nutrient transport to the fetus. Obesity induces placental inflammation at term, but the impact of obesity on placental inflammation earlier in pregnancy has not been defined. Using sheep as an experimental model, we hypothesized that maternal obesity (MO) would induce inflammation in the cotyledonary (COT) tissue of the placentome by mid-gestation. Nonpregnant ewes were randomly assigned to a control (C, 100% of NRC recommendations) or obese (OB, 150% of NRC) group from 60 days before conception to 75 day of gestation (dG), when ewes were necropsied and placental COT tissue collected for analyses. Free fatty acids content, triglyceride and cholesterol content were higher (P < 0.05) in the fetal plasma of OB compared to C ewes on day 75. MO increased mRNA levels of toll-like receptor (TLR) 2 (P < 0.05) and TLR4 (P = 0.06), macrophage markers cluster of differentiation (CD)11b (P = 0.06), CD14 and CD68 (P < 0.05), and proinflammatory cytokines tumor necrosis factor (TNF)alpha (P < 0.01), interleukin (IL)-6 (P < 0.05), IL-8(P < 0.01) and IL-18 (P = 0.06), in COT tissue. Inflammatory c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK)/c-Jun and nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells (NF-kappaB) signaling pathways were up-regulated (P < 0.05) in COT of OB ewes. In conclusion, MO enhanced the placental inflammatory response in OB ewes at mid-gestation, possibly as a result of increased TLR4 and free fatty acids.

Abstract
The Rendement Napole (RN) genotype widely exists in Hampshire pigs. Recently, RN gene was identified as a R200Q mutation in AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) gamma3 subunit. The effect of RN genotype on the growth performance of animals and the underlying mechanisms remain controversial. Using transgenic mice carrying an analogous R225Q mutation, the objective of this study was to study the role of RN gene in the growth performance of animals at different energy levels. Wild-type (WT) mice and those with the RN mutation were assigned to 4 groups: 1) WT plus normal diet, 2) RN plus normal diet, 3) WT plus high-energy diet, and 4) RN plus high-energy diet. Mice were weaned at 21 d old and fed the trial diets for 1 mo and then killed for carcass measurements. The pH of postmortem muscle from RN mice was less (P < 0.01) than that from WT mice. No difference in growth performance was observed when mice were fed a normal diet. When fed a high-energy diet, RN mice showed a greater fat accumulation (WT vs. RN, 1.11 vs. 1.63 g for gonadal fat and 1.40 vs. 1.84 g for subcutaneous fat; P < 0.05). Muscle weight was also increased (WT vs. RN, 0.27 vs. 0.30 g for gastrocnemius muscle; P < 0.05). The food consumption was greater in RN compared with WT mice (2.95 vs. 2.49 g; P < 0.05). The AMPK content and its downstream target, acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC), content were greater in RN mice (P < 0.05). The phosphorylation of ACC at Ser 79, a site exclusively phosphorylated by AMPK, was increased (P < 0.05), showing greater AMPK activity in RN mouse muscle. No difference in muscle fiber composition and mitochondrial content was observed between WT and RN mice. High fat diet downregulates protein kinase B but upregulates extracellular signal-regulated kinase signaling. In conclusion, the R225Q mutation has no major effect on the growth performance of animals fed a normal diet; a high-energy diet increased fatness in RN mice, likely due to their greater consumption of feed compared with WT mice.

Abstract
Enhancing skeletal muscle growth is crucial for animal agriculture because skeletal muscle provides meat for human consumption. An increasing body of evidence shows that the level of maternal nutrition alters fetal skeletal muscle development, with long-term effects on offspring growth and performance. Fetal skeletal muscle development mainly involves myogenesis (i.e., muscle cell development), but also involves adipogenesis (i.e., adipocyte development) and fibrogenesis (i.e., fibroblast development). These tissues in fetal muscle are mainly derived from mesenchymal stem cells (MSC). Shifting the commitment of MSC from myogenesis to adipogenesis increases intramuscular fat (i.e., marbling), improving the quality grade of meats. Strong experimental evidence indicates that Wingless and Int (Wnt)/beta-catenin signaling regulates MSC differentiation. Upregulation of Wnt/beta-catenin promotes myogenesis, and downregulation enhances adipogenesis. A lack of nutrients in early to midgestation reduces the formation of secondary muscle fibers in ruminant animals. Nutrient deficiency during mid- to late gestation decreases the number of intramuscular adipocytes and muscle fiber sizes. Knowledge of this regulatory mechanism will allow the development of strategies to enhance muscle growth and marbling in offspring, especially in the setting of nutrient deficiency.
