Abstract
Previous studies have shown that GLABRA3 (AtGL3), a bHLH transcription factor, plays essential roles in anthocyanin biosynthesis and trichome formation in Arabidopsis thaliana. However, there have been no such studies of a homologue, BnGL3, from the closely related crop, Brassica napus. Here, we analysed the BnGL3-1 coding domain sequence from the B. napus cultivar QINYOU Seven, identified conserved protein domains and performed a phylogenetic analysis to elucidate its relationship with homologues form a range of plant species. When expressed in tobacco leaves as a fusion protein with green fluorescent protein, BnGL3-1 accumulated in the nucleus, consistent with its predicted function as a transcription factor. Ectopic expression of the BnGL3-1 gene in the A. thaliana gl3-3 mutant resulted in levels of anthocyanins and numbers of trichomes in true leaves that were higher than in wild-type plants. Moreover, overexpression of BnGL3-1 in gl3-3 compensated for the promotion and repression of genes involved in anthocyanin biosynthesis and trichome formation, respectively, that has been reported in gl3-3 young shoots and expanding true leaves. This study provides new insights into GL3 function in anthocyanin biosynthesis and trichome formation in crucifers, and represents a promising target for genetic manipulation of B. napus.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS The purpose of this study is to report our 20-year experience with the surgical management of renal cell carcinoma extending into the inferior vena cava using a novel classification system. MATERIALS AND METHODS We retrospectively reviewed the data of 103 patients (69 males, 34 females, mean age: 52.9 ± 12.6 years) with renal cell carcinoma involving the venous system treated between 1993 and 2014. The inferior vena cava tumor thrombus was classified into five levels: 0 (renal vein, n = 12), 1 (infrahepatic, n = 33), 2a (low retrohepatic, n = 26), 2b (high retrohepatic, n = 19), and 3 (supradiaphragmatic, n = 13). Clinical data were summarized, and overall survival, cancer-specific survival, and disease-free survival were examined by Cox regression analysis. RESULTS All patients underwent radical surgery. Complete resections of the renal tumor and thrombus were achieved in 101 patients (98.1%). Two intraoperative and one postoperative in-hospital deaths (2.9%) occurred. In total, 19 patients (18.8%) had a total of 29 postoperative complications. Mean follow-up time was 46 months (range, 1-239 months). The 5- and 10-year overall survival rates were 62.9% and 56.0%, respectively. Metastasis, rather than thrombus level, was a significant risk factor associated with overall survival (hazard ratio = 4.89, 95% confidence interval: 2.24-10.67, p < 0.001). CONCLUSION Our novel classification system can be used to select the optimal surgical approach and method for patients with renal cell carcinoma and venous thrombus. Its use is associated with prolonged survival and relatively few complications. Metastasis is an independent risk factor of overall survival.

Abstract
The measurement of two-particle angular correlations is a powerful tool to study jet quenching in a p_{T} region inaccessible by direct jet identification. In these measurements pseudorapidity (Δη) and azimuthal (Δφ) differences are used to extract the shape of the near-side peak formed by particles associated with a higher p_{T} trigger particle (1<p_{T,trig}<8 GeV/c). A combined fit of the near-side peak and long-range correlations is applied to the data allowing the extraction of the centrality evolution of the peak shape in Pb-Pb collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=2.76 TeV. A significant broadening of the peak in the Δη direction at low p_{T} is found from peripheral to central collisions, which vanishes above 4 GeV/c, while in the Δφ direction the peak is almost independent of centrality. For the 10% most central collisions and 1<p_{T,assoc}<2 GeV/c, 1<p_{T,trig}<3 GeV/c a novel feature is observed: a depletion develops around the center of the peak. The results are compared to pp collisions at the same center of mass energy and ampt model simulations. The comparison to the investigated models suggests that the broadening and the development of the depletion is connected to the strength of radial and longitudinal flow.

Energy dependence of forward-rapidity [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] production in pp collisions at the LHC. THE EUROPEAN PHYSICAL JOURNAL. C, PARTICLES AND FIELDS 2017; 77:392. [PMID: 28775665 PMCID: PMC5512511 DOI: 10.1140/epjc/s10052-017-4940-4] [Citation(s) in RCA: 1] [Impact Index Per Article: 0.1] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Track Full Text] [Figures] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 03/14/2017] [Accepted: 05/24/2017] [Indexed: 06/07/2023]
Abstract
We present results on transverse momentum ([Formula: see text]) and rapidity ([Formula: see text]) differential production cross sections, mean transverse momentum and mean transverse momentum square of inclusive [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] at forward rapidity ([Formula: see text]) as well as [Formula: see text]-to-[Formula: see text] cross section ratios. These quantities are measured in pp collisions at center of mass energies [Formula: see text] and 13 TeV with the ALICE detector. Both charmonium states are reconstructed in the dimuon decay channel, using the muon spectrometer. A comprehensive comparison to inclusive charmonium cross sections measured at [Formula: see text], 7 and 8 TeV is performed. A comparison to non-relativistic quantum chromodynamics and fixed-order next-to-leading logarithm calculations, which describe prompt and non-prompt charmonium production respectively, is also presented. A good description of the data is obtained over the full [Formula: see text] range, provided that both contributions are summed. In particular, it is found that for [Formula: see text] GeV/c the non-prompt contribution reaches up to 50% of the total charmonium yield.

The transverse momentum distributions of the strange and double-strange hyperon resonances (Σ ( 1385 ) ± , Ξ ( 1530 ) 0 ) produced in p-Pb collisions at s NN = 5.02 TeV were measured in the rapidity range - 0.5 < y CMS < 0 for event classes corresponding to different charged-particle multiplicity densities, ⟨ dN ch /dη lab ⟩ . The mean transverse momentum values are presented as a function of ⟨ dN ch /dη lab ⟩ , as well as a function of the particle masses and compared with previous results on hyperon production. The integrated yield ratios of excited to ground-state hyperons are constant as a function of ⟨ dN ch /dη lab ⟩ . The equivalent ratios to pions exhibit an increase with ⟨ dN ch /dη lab ⟩ , depending on their strangeness content.

Production of [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] mesons up to high transverse momentum in pp collisions at 2.76 TeV. THE EUROPEAN PHYSICAL JOURNAL. C, PARTICLES AND FIELDS 2017; 77:339. Abstract
The invariant differential cross sections for inclusive [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] mesons at midrapidity were measured in pp collisions at [Formula: see text] TeV for transverse momenta [Formula: see text] GeV/c and [Formula: see text] GeV/c, respectively, using the ALICE detector. This large range in [Formula: see text] was achieved by combining various analysis techniques and different triggers involving the electromagnetic calorimeter (EMCal). In particular, a new single-cluster, shower-shape based method was developed for the identification of high-[Formula: see text] neutral pions, which exploits that the showers originating from their decay photons overlap in the EMCal. Above 4 GeV/[Formula: see text], the measured cross sections are found to exhibit a similar power-law behavior with an exponent of about 6.3. Next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD calculations differ from the measured cross sections by about 30% for the [Formula: see text], and between 30-50% for the [Formula: see text] meson, while generator-level simulations with PYTHIA 8.2 describe the data to better than 10-30%, except at [Formula: see text] GeV/[Formula: see text]. The new data can therefore be used to further improve the theoretical description of [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] meson production.

Flow Dominance and Factorization of Transverse Momentum Correlations in Pb-Pb Collisions at the LHC. PHYSICAL REVIEW LETTERS 2017; 118:162302. Abstract
We present the first measurement of the two-particle transverse momentum differential correlation function, P_{2}≡⟨Δp_{T}Δp_{T}⟩/⟨p_{T}⟩^{2}, in Pb-Pb collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=2.76 TeV. Results for P_{2} are reported as a function of the relative pseudorapidity (Δη) and azimuthal angle (Δφ) between two particles for different collision centralities. The Δϕ dependence is found to be largely independent of Δη for |Δη|≥0.9. In the 5% most central Pb-Pb collisions, the two-particle transverse momentum correlation function exhibits a clear double-hump structure around Δφ=π (i.e., on the away side), which is not observed in number correlations in the same centrality range, and thus provides an indication of the dominance of triangular flow in this collision centrality. Fourier decompositions of P_{2}, studied as a function of the collision centrality, show that correlations at |Δη|≥0.9 can be well reproduced by a flow ansatz based on the notion that measured transverse momentum correlations are strictly determined by the collective motion of the system.

Abstract
The azimuthal correlations of D mesons with charged particles were measured with the ALICE apparatus in pp collisions at [Formula: see text] and p-Pb collisions at [Formula: see text] at the Large Hadron Collider. [Formula: see text], [Formula: see text], and [Formula: see text] mesons and their charge conjugates with transverse momentum [Formula: see text] and rapidity in the nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass system [Formula: see text] (pp collisions) and [Formula: see text] (p-Pb collisions) were correlated to charged particles with [Formula: see text]. The yield of charged particles in the correlation peak induced by the jet containing the D meson and the peak width are compatible within uncertainties in the two collision systems. The data are described within uncertainties by Monte-Carlo simulations based on PYTHIA, POWHEG, and EPOS 3 event generators.

Abstract
Multidrug resistance (MDR) is the major underlying cause of the low 5-year survival rate of esophageal carcinoma. In this study, we developed a novel microemulsion system (SD-ME) co-loaded with docetaxel (DTX) and Schizandrin A, a potent chemotherapeutic agent and a potential drug resistance modulator, respectively. In the physicochemical characterization studies, SD-ME displayed a well-defined spherical shape and size (56.62 ± 4.16 nm), a narrow polydispersity index (PDI, 0.132 ± 0.002), and a negative surface charge (−19.81 ± 3.11 mv). In the cellular uptake studies, SD-ME with a DTX concentration of 30 μg/mL exhibited a 3.9-fold enhancement of DTX internalization in DTX-resistant EC109 (EC109/DDR) cells in comparison to that observed for EC109 cells, and the mechanisms were associated with reducing P-gp expression and inhibiting P-gp ATPease. The half-maximal inhibitory concentrations (IC50) of DTX and SD-ME against EC109/DDR cells were 40.57 ± 0.39 and 3.59 ± 0.06 μg/mL, respectively. Likewise, the apoptotic rate of EC109/DDR treated with SD-ME increased up to 20-fold compared to that observed with free DTX. In anticancer efficacy studies in vivo, SD-ME markedly retarded the tumor growth of nude mice bearing EC109/DDR tumor xenografts compared with D-ME and free DTX throughout the duration of study. Consequently, mice treated with SD-ME had the highest survival rate (37.5%) during the observation period (70 days). In addition, there were no apparent side effects after the administration of SD-ME. Overall, our study provides evidence for SD-ME as an effective drug delivery system for enhanced MDR tumor treatment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Bone repair is initiated with a local inflammatory response to injury. The presence of systemic inflammation impairs bone healing and often leads to malunion, although the underlying mechanisms remain poorly defined. Our research objective was to use a mouse model of cortical bone repair to determine the effect of systemic inflammation on cells in the bone healing microenvironment. QUESTION/PURPOSES: (1) Does systemic inflammation, induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) administration affect the quantity and quality of regenerating bone in primary bone healing? (2) Does systemic inflammation alter vascularization and the number or activity of inflammatory cells, osteoblasts, and osteoclasts in the bone healing microenvironment? METHODS Cortical defects were drilled in the femoral diaphysis of female and male C57BL/6 mice aged 5 to 9 months that were treated with daily systemic injections of LPS or physiologic saline as control for 7 days. Mice were euthanized at 1 week (Control, n = 7; LPS, n = 8), 2 weeks (Control, n = 7; LPS, n = 8), and 6 weeks (Control, n = 9; LPS, n = 8) after surgery. The quantity (bone volume per tissue volume [BV/TV]) and microarchitecture (trabecular separation and thickness, porosity) of bone in the defect were quantified with time using microCT. The presence or activity of vascular endothelial cells (CD34), macrophages (F4/80), osteoblasts (alkaline phosphatase [ALP]), and osteoclasts (tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase [TRAP]) were evaluated using histochemical analyses. RESULTS Only one of eight defects was bridged completely 6 weeks after surgery in LPS-injected mouse bones compared with seven of nine defects in the control mouse bones (odds ratio [OR], 0.04; 95% CI, 0.003-0.560; p = 0.007). The decrease in cortical bone in LPS-treated mice was reflected in reduced BV/TV (21% ± 4% vs 39% ± 10%; p < 0.01), increased trabecular separation (240 ± 36 μm vs 171 ± 29 μm; p < 0.01), decreased trabecular thickness (81 ± 18 μm vs 110 ± 22 μm; p = 0.02), and porosity (79% ± 4% vs 60% ± 10%; p < 0.01) at 6 weeks postoperative. Defective healing was accompanied by decreased CD34 (1.1 ± 0.6 vs 3.4 ± 0.9; p < 0.01), ALP (1.9 ± 0.9 vs 6.1 ± 3.2; p = 0.03), and TRAP (3.3 ± 4.7 vs 7.2 ± 4.0; p = 0.01) activity, and increased F4/80 (13 ± 2.6 vs 6.8 ± 1.7; p < 0.01) activity at 2 weeks postoperative. CONCLUSION The results indicate that LPS-induced systemic inflammation reduced the amount and impaired the quality of bone regenerated in mouse femurs. The effects were associated with impaired revascularization, decreased bone turnover by osteoblasts and osteoclasts, and by increased catabolic activity by macrophages. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Results from this preclinical study support clinical observations of impaired primary bone healing in patients with systemic inflammation. Based on our data, local administration of VEGF in the callus to stimulate revascularization, or transplantation of stem cells to enhance bone turnover represent potentially feasible approaches to improve outcomes in clinical practice.

Abstract
Haemonchus contortus is one of the most significant strongylid nematodes infecting small ruminants, and it causes great economic losses to the livestock industry worldwide. Accurate diagnosis of H. contortus is crucial to control strategies. Traditional microscopic examinations are the most common methods for the diagnosis of H. contortus , but they are time-consuming and inaccurate. Molecular methods based on PCR are more accurate, but need expensive machines usually only used in the laboratory. Loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) is a rapid, simple, specific, and sensitive method that has been widely used to detect viruses, bacteria, and parasites. In the present study, a LAMP method targeting ribosomal ITS-2 gene for detection of the H. contortus in goat fecal samples has been established. The established LAMP method was H. contortus specific, and the sensitivity of LAMP was the same as that of the H. contortus species-specific PCR, with the lowest DNA level detected as being 1 pg. Examination of the clinical samples indicated that the positive rate of LAMP was higher than that of PCR, but no statistical difference was observed between LAMP and PCR (χ2 = 17.991, P = 0.053). In conclusion, a LAMP assay with a high specificity and a good sensitivity has been developed to detect H. contortus infection in goats. The established LAMP assay is useful for clinical diagnosis of H. contortus .

Adiponectin partially rescues high glucose/high fat-induced impairment of mitochondrial biogenesis and function in a PGC-1α dependent manner. Abstract
OBJECTIVE Plasma adiponectin (APN) levels are decreased in diabetic patients. Dysfunctional mitochondrial biogenesis is involved in type 2 diabetes (T2DM) pathogenesis, by unclear mechanisms. The present study determined (1) whether myocardial mitochondrial biogenesis was impaired in cardiomyocytes exposed to a high glucose/high fat (HGHF) medium (a T2DM in vitro model), (2) the effects of APN administration upon mitochondrial biogenesis in cardiomyocytes affected by HGHF incubation, and 3) the involved underlying mechanisms. MATERIALS AND METHODS Neonatal rat ventricular myocytes (NRVMs) were isolated and incubated in HGHF medium. Mitochondrial function was assessed by ATP content, and fluorescent microscopic analysis of myocardial apoptosis was determined by TUNEL staining and caspase-3 activity. RESULTS HGHF treatment reduced mitochondrial biogenesis, altered mitochondrial structure, and induced mitochondrial dysfunction in NRVMs. Administration of APN partially rescued these effects. However, siRNA-mediated knockdown of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma coactivator-1alpha (PGC-1α) significantly blocked the beneficial effects of APN in mitochondria and cardiomyocytes subjected to hypoxia/reoxygenation injury. CONCLUSIONS In the current study, we have provided the direct in vitro evidence that APN partially rescues HGHF-induced impairment of mitochondrial biogenesis and function via PGC-1α-mediated signaling.

Abstract
UNLABELLED This study evaluated the levels of bone turnover markers (BTMs) and investigated relationships between them and bone mineral density (BMD) in postmenopausal women in China suburban district. The prevalence of osteoporosis was 25.03 % at lumbar spine and 6.23 % at femoral neck, and BTMs were negatively correlated with BMDs. INTRODUCTION The aims of this study were to evaluate the levels of bone turnover markers (BTMs), including serum N-terminal procollagen of type I collagen (P1NP), beta C-terminal cross-linked of type I collagen (β-CTX), 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D], and parathyroid hormone (PTH), and to investigate relationships between these markers and bone mineral density (BMD) as well the prevalence of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women of suburban district. METHODS A population of 4822 postmenopausal women aged 55-69 years old (62.22 ± 6.75) from the suburban district was recruited voluntarily. BMD was measured at the lumbar spine, femoral neck, and total hip using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry; 2251 women in this group had the serum BTMs 25(OH)D and PTH tested. RESULTS The prevalence of osteoporosis was 25.03 % at lumbar spine and 6.23 % at femoral neck. The median (interquartile range) values of serum P1NP, β-CTX, 25(OH)D, and PTH were 59.3 ng/mL (44.7-75.52), 0.370 ng/mL (0.280-0.490), 23.0 ng/mL (17.1-30.5), and 31.4 pg/mL (24.9-39.7), respectively. Serum P1NP and β-CTX levels presented significantly negative correlations with BMDs at the all the sites (Betastd = -0.098 to -0.208, respectively, P < 0.001), whereas PTH levels were negatively correlated with BMDs of the femoral neck and total hip (Betastd = -0.062 and -0.054, P < 0.01, respectively). Serum 25(OH)D had positive associations with BMDs at total hip (Betastd = 0.051, P < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS The BMD of postmenopausal women in China suburban area is higher than that in downtown area, and over 60 % of the participants had their serum 25(OH)D level over 20 ng/mL. BTMs were negatively correlated with BMDs, suggesting that BTMs are reliable factors for early declines in BMD.

Abstract
Ovarian aging has been associated with increased levels of reactive oxygen species and the deficiencies of antioxidant defense. The antioxidant peroxiredoxin 4 (Prdx4), as a member of Prdx protein family, controls cellular oxidative stress by reducing H2O2 levels. In previous studies, we provided evidence that Prdx4 was abundantly expressed in mouse and human ovaries and expression of Prdx4 in matured follicles was higher than that in immatured follicles. Accordingly, we speculated that Prdx4 expression could be associated with follicle development and it may be as a part of the antioxidative mechanism in follicular development. In this study, we demonstrated that Prdx4 was mainly expressed in the granulosa cells of mouse ovaries and the expression levels significantly increased along development of follicles. However, the expression levels of Prdx4 decreased when mice reached the aged stage (18 months old). Likewise a similar pattern that was observed in the mice study was also found in human ovaries where Prdx4 was expressed lower in premenopausal women than young women. Subsequent in vitro experiments indicated that Prdx4 mRNA and protein levels both increased with H2O2 in a concentrationdependent manner, but decreased rapidly with high concentration of H2O2, and the changes were closely related to cell proliferation. Taken together, these findings argue our understanding on the role of oxidative stress and antioxidant in follicular development and ovarian aging.

Abstract
We report the measurements of correlations between event-by-event fluctuations of amplitudes of anisotropic flow harmonics in nucleus-nucleus collisions, obtained for the first time using a new analysis method based on multiparticle cumulants in mixed harmonics. This novel method is robust against systematic biases originating from nonflow effects and by construction any dependence on symmetry planes is eliminated. We demonstrate that correlations of flow harmonics exhibit a better sensitivity to medium properties than the individual flow harmonics. The new measurements are performed in Pb-Pb collisions at the center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of sqrt[s_{NN}]=2.76 TeV by the ALICE experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. The centrality dependence of correlation between event-by-event fluctuations of the elliptic v_{2} and quadrangular v_{4} flow harmonics, as well as of anticorrelation between v_{2} and triangular v_{3} flow harmonics are presented. The results cover two different regimes of the initial state configurations: geometry dominated (in midcentral collisions) and fluctuation dominated (in the most central collisions). Comparisons are made to predictions from Monte Carlo Glauber, viscous hydrodynamics, ampt, and hijing models. Together with the existing measurements of the individual flow harmonics the presented results provide further constraints on the initial conditions and the transport properties of the system produced in heavy-ion collisions.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To study the change of microRNA during the early stage of high phosphorus induced vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC) calcification and its related mechanism. METHODS The in vitro calcification model was created through stimulating VSMC cell line A7r5 with high Pi (2.6 mmol/L) for 7 d. The calcification was validated through ocresolphthalein complexone colorimetry to detect the cellular calcium content, real-time PCR to measure the calcification-related gene expression and alizarin red staining to observe the formation of calcium nodules. Based on the cell calcification model, microRNA microarray array was applied to screen the profiles of microRNA expression in VSMC following high Pi stimulation for different periods (0, 3 and 12 h). The array data were analyzed by TAM tool to explore the activated signaling pathway. RESULTS The calcium content of A7r5 cells induced by high Pi was increased 9.6 times high as cells without Pi treatment (P<0.05). VSMC contractile phenotype genes (SM-α actin, SM22) were down-regulated (P<0.05), while calcification-related genes (BMP2, MSX2, Runx2) were up-regulated (P<0.05) in VSMC stimulated by high Pi. The calcium nodules were obviously formed in cells after 7 d high Pi treatment. In microarray experiment, 680 individual microRNAs were detected in high Pi-treated VSMCs at different time points (0, 3 and 12 h). Among these genes, miR-183, miR-664 and miR-9* were increased whereas miR-542-5P, let-7f and miR-29a were decreased in time-dependent manners. Twenty-six kinds of signaling pathways, including cell apoptosis, differentiation and proliferation, were significantly activated. All these activated pathways were associated with calcification. CONCLUSION This study implies that microRNA changed in high Pi-induced VSMCs may involve in the process of calcification.

Abstract
Objective: To observe the characteristics of pterygium with in vivo confocal microscopy (IVCM) and understand pterygium activity with the density of inflammatory cells, formation of new blood vessels, and the number of activated keratocytes within the stroma. Methods: A prospective case-controlled study. Thirty-six pterygia from 28 patients were analyzed in this study. A pterygium activity score was obtained by summing four scores of ocular discomfort, pterygium hyperemia, keratitis, and the presence of Fuchs patches. Among them, the low activity of pterygium (PAS score less than 3 points) appeared in 12 eyes and high activity of pterygium (PAS score ≥ 4 points) in 24 eyes. All Patients underwent pterygium IVCM quantitative analysis by observing the boundaries between the pterygium and the adjacent cornea, the density of goblet cells and dendritiform inflammatory cells and Fuchs patches. The correlation of pterygium activity between IVCM and PAS with slit lamp was analyzed with Spearman correlation analysis. Results: The presence of inflammatory cells, numerous blood vessels, and irregular boundary between the cornea and the pterygium with infiltration of hyper-reflective cells in the adjacent corneal epithelium were signs observed with IVCM associated with pterygium activity. With IVCM technique, epithelial cells, goblet cells, and dendritiform inflammatory cells of various sizes were observed within the pterygium epithelium. The active (PAS ≥4) pterygium showed irregular boundaries between the pterygium and the adjacent cornea (score, 0.84±0.51) comparing with inactive subjects (score 0.23±0.12, t=2.68, P=0.009). Fuchs patches were observed as islets of hyper-reflective polygonal cells in front of the pterygium head with blurred boundary. The score (0.75±0.25) in active group showed significant changes as compared with normal subjects (0.23±0.12, t=3.79, P=0.001). The score of dendritiform inflammatory cells, activated keratocytes, and goblet cells in active group were 2.75±0.76, 1.92±0.68, and 2.08±0.42, which were significantly higher than those in inactive group (1.25±0.55, 0.50±0.25, 1.15±0.32, P=0.035, 0.030, <0.01). There was significant positive correlation between IVCM activity and traditional slit lamp PAS. Conclusion: Quantitative analysis of dendritiform inflammatory cells, vascular proliferation and activated keratocytes of pterygium by IVCM may be a reliable evaluation method to evaluate the activity of pterygium.(Chin J Ophthalmol, 2016, 52: 755-763).

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To observe the morphology, fibrosis grade and inflammatory infiltration of meibomian glands using in vivo confocal microscopy(IVCM)in meibomian gland dysfunction(MGD)patients. METHODS A prospective case-controlled study. According to the diagnostic criteria of MGD, 20 MGD patients(20 eyes)were included in our study from August to October 2015. Fifteen normal subjects(15 eyes)were also studied. METHODS All subjects completed the questionnaire of the Ocular Surface Disease Index(OSDI), lid margin and ocular surface examination by slit lamp microscropy, tear film break-up time(TBUT)test, corneal and conjunctival staining(Oxford scale), Schirmer I test, infrared meibomian photography and IVCM. Main outcomes in IVCM included meibomian gland acinar longest diameter(MGALD), meibomian gland acinar shortest diameter(MGASD), meibomian gland acinar unit density(MGAUD), meibomian gland acinar unit area(MGAUA), meibomian gland inflammatory cell density and fibrosis degree. The parameters between the MGD group and the control group were compared using the independent samples t test. RESULTS The OSDI score[(31.80±22.97)points], 1id margin abnormality score[(3.10±0.31)points], loss rate of meibomian glands(38.31%±19.94%)and corneal and conjunctival staining score[1.00(2.75)points]in the MGD group were obviously higher than those in the control group[(7.93±6.51)points,(0.33±0.31)points, 21.31% ± 7.70%, and 0.00(1.00)points, P=0.001, P<0.001, P=0.004, and P=0.037, respectively]. The TBUT was significantly lower in the MGD group[(3.35±2.28)s]than in the control group[(6.67±2.51)s, P<0.001]. According to Schirmer I test, there was no significant difference in the two groups(P=0.139). The mean values of MGALD[(156.80 ± 46.10)μm], MGASD[(38.75 ± 11 .72)μm], MGAUA[(10 113.84 ± 5 531.21)μm(2)], meibomian gland inflammatory cell density[(621.90 ± 405.63)cells/mm(2)]and fibrosis degree 1.50(1.00)in the MGD patients were larger than those in the control group[(67.47 ± 9.117)μm,(22.00 ± 2.95)μm,(3 102.13 ± 1111.97)μm(2),(188.80 ± 72.25)cells/mm(2), and 0.00(0.00), all P<0.001, respectively]. The mean MGAUD was lower in the MGD patients[(61.10 ± 34.97)glands/mm(2)]than in the control group[(105.07±18.58)glands/mm(2), P<0.001]. CONCLUSIONS IVCM was pertinent to investigate the meibomian glands by detecting the irregularity of meibomian orifices, the diameter and area, and the inflammation and fibrosis levels in MGD patients. It may have a potential clinical value for the diagnosis of MGD. (Chin J Ophthalmol, 2016, 52: 649-656).
