Abstract
Triplet-triplet annihilation upconversion (TTA-UC) has recently drawn widespread interest for its capacity to harvest low-energy photons and to broaden the absorption spectra of photonic devices, such as solar cells. Although conceptually promising, effective integration of TTA-UC materials into practical devices has been difficult due to the diffusive and anoxic conditions required in TTA-UC host media. Of the solid-state host materials investigated, rubbery polymers facilitate the highest TTA-UC efficiency. To date, however, their need for long-term oxygen protection has limited rubbery polymers to rigid film architectures that forfeit their intrinsic flexibility. This study introduces a new multilayer thin-film architecture, in which scalable solution processing techniques are employed to fabricate flexible, photostable, and efficient TTA-UC thin films containing layers of oxygen barrier and host polymers. This breakthrough material design marks a crucial advance toward TTA-UC integration within rigid and flexible devices alike. Moreover, it introduces new opportunities in unexplored applications such as anticounterfeiting. Soft lithography is incorporated into the film fabrication process to pattern TTA-UC host layers with a broad range of high-resolution microscale designs, and superimposing host layers with customized absorption, emission, and patterning ultimately produces proof-of-concept anticounterfeiting labels with advanced excitation-dependent photoluminescent security features.

Abstract
Upconverting materials have achieved great progress in recent years, however, it remains challenging for the mechanistic research on new upconversion strategy of lanthanides. Here, a novel and efficient strategy to realize photon upconversion from more lanthanides and fine control of lanthanide donor-acceptor interactions through using the interfacial energy transfer (IET) is reported. Unlike conventional energy-transfer upconversion and recently reported energy-migration upconversion, the IET approach is capable of enabling upconversions from Er3+, Tm3+, Ho3+, Tb3+, Eu3+, Dy3+ to Sm3+ in NaYF4- and NaYbF4-based core-shell nanostructures simultaneously. Applying the IET in a Nd-Yb coupled sensitizing system can also enable the 808/980 nm dual-wavelength excited upconversion from a single particle. More importantly, the construction of IET concept allows for a fine control and manipulation of lanthanide donor-acceptor interactions and dynamics at the nanometer-length scale by establishing a physical model upon an interlayer-mediated nanostructure. These findings open a door for the fundamental understanding of the luminescence dynamics involving lanthanides at nanoscale, which would further help conceive new scientific concepts and control photon upconversion at a single lanthanide ion level.

Abstract
Temperature-responsive luminescent solar concentrators (LSCs) have been fabricated in which the Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) between a donor-acceptor pair in a liquid crystalline solvent can be tuned. At room temperatures, the perylene bisimide (PBI) acceptor is aggregated and FRET is inactive; while after heating to a temperature above the isotropic phase of the liquid crystal solvent, the acceptor PBI completely dissolves and FRET is activated. This unusual temperature control over FRET was used to design a color-tunable LSC. The device has been shown to be highly stable towards consecutive heating and cooling cycles, making it an appealing device for harvesting otherwise unused solar energy.

Abstract
Relative to the broadband solar spectrum, a narrow range of spectral absorption of photovoltaic (PV) devices is considered an important determinant that the efficiency of light harvesting of these devices is less than unity. Having the narrowest spectral response to solar radiation among all PV devices, dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) suffer severely from this loss. Luminescent spectral conversion provides a mechanism to manipulate and to adapt the incident solar spectrum by converting, through photoluminescence, the energies of solar photons into those that are more effectively captured by a PV device. This mechanism is particularly helpful for DSSCs because there is much flexibility in both the choice of the light-harvesting materials and the architecture of the DSSC. Here we review and discuss recent advances in the field of luminescent spectral conversion for DSSCs. The focus is on the architectural design of DSSCs, and the complications, advantages and new functionalities offered by each of their configurations are discussed. The loss mechanisms are examined and important parameters governing the spectral conversion mechanism of a DSSC are introduced.
