Sonochemical synthesis of amorphous nanoscopic iron(III) oxide from Fe(acac)3

Amorphous nanoscopic iron(III) oxide with interesting magnetic properties was prepared by sonolysis of Fe(acac)(3) under Ar in tetraglyme with a small amount of added water. The organics content and the surface area of the Fe(2)O(3) nanoparticles can be controlled with an amount of water in the reaction mixture and it increases from 48 m(2)g(-1) for dry solvent up to 260 m(2)g(-1) when wet Ar is employed. For further monitoring of the particle size and morphology and for the study of the surface, magnetic and thermal properties, the sample with 2 vol.% of H(2)O was chosen. SEM showed nanoscopic composite particles of a uniform size distribution and nearly spherical shapes with an estimated diameter of 20 nm. Such composites are built from amorphous iron(III) oxide nanoparticles (3 nm) embedded in an acetate matrix as proved by TEM and IR spectroscopy. Temperature-dependent Mössbauer spectra demonstrate a very narrow magnetic transition with an unusually low transition temperature around 25K reflecting the system of magnetically non-interacting ultrasmall particles with a narrow size distribution. The in-field (5T) Mössbauer spectrum recorded at 5K shows a minimum change compared to the zero-field spectrum indicating an absence of the long-range magnetic ordering. The composite particles are thermally stable up to 150 degrees C, which is confirmed by DSC, TG, and by the constant surface area. At higher temperatures, acetate groups are removed from the particle surface, which is documented by the increased surface area and disappearance of their IR bands.

Electrokinetic and adsorption properties of sepiolite modified by 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane

Surface modification of clay minerals has become increasingly important for improving the practical applications of clays such as fillers and adsorbents. An investigation was carried out on the surface modification of sepiolite with aminopropylsilyl groups in 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (3-APT). The zeta potential of the modified sepiolite suspensions was measured as a function of initial electrolyte concentration and equilibrium pH using a Zeta Meter 3.0 for modified sepiolite. The utility of the 3-APT-modified sepiolite was investigated as an adsorbent for removal of various heavy metal ions such as Fe, Mn, Co, Zn, Cu, Cd and Ni from aqueous solutions. The effects of various factors on the adsorption, such as pH, ionic strength and temperature of the solution were studied. The results showed that the amount adsorbed increases with solution pH in the pH range of 1.5 and 7.0; indicated that the modified sepiolite adsorbed Fe and Mn ions more than other metal ions such as Co, Zn, Cu, Cd and Ni. It was found that the temperature had an important effect on metal ion adsorption by the modified sepiolite. The adsorption isotherm has been determined and data have been analyzed according to the Langmuir and Freundlich models.

Mechanistic studies on the conversion of dicobalt octacarbonyl into colloidal cobalt nanoparticles

In situ ATR-FTIR monitoring has allowed the direct study of the effect of additives (trioctylphosphine oxide [TOPO] and oleic acid) on the kinetics and rate of the thermal decomposition of dicobalt octacarbonyl leading to the formation of colloidal cobalt nanoparticles (CoCNPs). The study has shown that additives usually considered as simple surfactants influence the rate and kinetics of the decomposition of dicobalt octacarbonyl. Several of the initial intermediates connecting Co2(CO)8 with CoCNPs have been identified, and a tentative mechanism for the formation of the colloidal nanoparticles has been proposed.

The antithrombogenic potential of a polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) nanocomposite

We have developed a nanocomposite using a silica nanocomposite polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) and poly(carbonate-urea)urethane (PCU) for potential use in cardiovascular bypass grafts and the microvascular component of artificial capillary beds. In this study, we sought to compare its antithrombogenicity to that of conventional polymers used in vascular bypass grafts so as to improve upon current patency rates, particularly in the microvascular setting. Using atomic force microscopy (AFM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), surface topography and composition were studied, respectively. The ability of the nanocomposite surface to repel both proteins and platelets in vitro was assessed using thromboelastography (TEG), fibrinogen ELISA assays, antifactor Xa assays, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and platelet adsorption tests. TEG analysis showed a significant decrease in clot strength (one-way ANOVA, p < 0.001) and increase in clot lysis (one-way ANOVA, p < 0.0001) on the nanocomposite when compared to both poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE) and PCU. ELISA assays indicate lower adsorption of fibrinogen to the nanocomposite compared to PTFE (one-way ANOVA, p < 0.01). Interestingly, increasing the concentration of POSS nanocages within these polymers was shown to proportionately inhibit factor X activity. Platelet adsorption at 120 min was also lower compared to PTFE and PCU (two-way ANOVA, p < 0.05). SEM images showed a "speckled" morphologic pattern with Cooper grades I platelet adsorption morphology on the nanocomposite compared to PTFE with grade IV morphology. On the basis of these results, we concluded that POSS nanocomposites possess greater thromboresistance than PTFE and PCU, making it an ideal material for the construction of both bypass grafts and microvessels.

Surface modification of pyrophyllite with amino silane coupling agent for the removal of 4-nitrophenol from aqueous solutions

The surface of naturally hydrophobic mineral pyrophyllite was modified to hydrophilic by treatment with prehydrolyzed N-(2-aminoethyl)-3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane (APEO) coupling agent to prepare a novel and effective adsorbent for the removal of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) from aqueous solutions. XRD, FTIR, and SEM analyses were used to characterize the surface modification. It was found that after the grafting procedure, heat treatment at 110 degrees C results in condensation reaction between the OH groups of the APEO molecule and the hydroxyl groups and/or oxygen atoms on the pyrophyllite surface and the adsorption of 4-NP by APEO-modified pyrophyllite involves interactions between dissociated 4-NP molecules and protonated amine groups of APEO molecules attached to the mineral surface. Adsorption equilibrium data for 4-NP adsorption on APEO-treated and untreated pyrophyllite were most satisfactorily fitted using the Freundlich adsorption isotherm and adsorption capacity was found to be 0.268 mg/g for modified pyrophyllite whereas it was only 0.105 mg/g for untreated pyrophyllite.
