Abstract
The first catalytic enantio- and diastereoselective synthesis of diaziridines is presented. Aziridination of N-tosyl aldimines applying modified hydroxylamine under asymmetric phase-transfer catalysis furnished optically active diaziridines. The diaziridines are formed as a single diastereomer in up to 96% ee, containing two orthogonal N-protecting groups, which can be deprotected selectively.

Abstract
Enantio- and diastereoselective one-pot synthesis of three- to seven-membered cis-azaheterocycles was achieved using a triggered asymmetric conjugate addition reaction of lithium amide with an enoate, followed by alkylation of the resulting lithium enolate with α,ω-dihaloalkane and N-alkylation. Isomerization of cis-azaheterocycles with a base yielded the trans-product, constituting a one-pot synthesis of cis-azacycles and a two-step synthesis of trans-azacycles. The four-step asymmetric synthesis of nemonapride highlights the general utility of the method.

Abstract
A high-yielding and enantioselective access to novel N-Boc terminal aziridines, bearing a quaternary stereogenic center, has been developed via an aza-Michael initiated ring-closure (aza-MIRC) reaction of α-acyl acrylates with an N-tosyloxy tert-butyl carbamate catalyzed by a chiral amino thiourea. The feasibility of the aziridine regioselective ring-opening to valuable α,α-disubstituted α-amino acid esters has been demonstrated.

Abstract
The majority of N-heterocyclic carbene catalyzed reactions of α-functionalized aldehydes, including annulations, oxidations, and redox reactions, occur more rapidly with N-mesityl substituted NHCs. In many cases, no reaction occurs with NHCs lacking ortho-substituted aromatics. By careful competition studies, catalyst analogue synthesis, mechanistic investigations, and consideration of the elementary steps in NHC-catalyzed reactions of enals, we have determined that the effect of the N-mesityl group is to render the initial addition of the NHC to the aldehyde irreversible, thereby accelerating the formation of the Breslow intermediate. These studies rationalize the experimentally observed catalyst preference for all classes of NHC-catalyzed reactions of aldehydes and provide a roadmap for catalyst selection and design.
