Abstract
AIM: To clarify which method has accuracy: 2nd generation contrast-enhanced ultrasound or biopsy of portal vein thrombus in the differential diagnosis of portal vein thrombosis.
METHODS: One hundred and eighty-six patients with hepatocellular carcinoma and portal vein thrombosis underwent in blinded fashion a 2nd generation contrast-enhanced ultrasound and biopsy of portal vein thrombus; both results were examined on the basis of the follow-up of patients compared to reference-standard.
RESULTS: One hundred and eight patients completed the study. Benign thrombosis on 2nd generation contrast-enhanced ultrasound was characterised by progressive hypoenhancing of the thrombus; in malignant portal vein thrombosis there was a precocious homogeneous enhancement of the thrombus. On follow-up there were 50 of 108 patients with benign thrombosis: all were correctly diagnosed by both methods. There were 58 of 108 patients with malignant thrombosis: amongst these, 52 were correctly diagnosed by both methods, the remainder did not present malignant cells on portal vein thrombus biopsy and showed on 2nd generation contrast-enhanced ultrasound an inhomogeneous enhancement pattern. A new biopsy during the follow-up, guided to the area of thrombus that showed up on 2nd generation contrast-enhanced ultrasound, demonstrated an enhancing pattern indicating malignant cells.
CONCLUSION: In patients with hepatocellular carcinoma complicated by portal vein thrombosis, 2nd generation contrast-enhanced ultrasound of portal vein thrombus is very useful in assessing the benign or malignant nature of the thrombus. Puncture biopsy of thrombus is usually accurate but presents some sampling errors, so, when pathological results are required, 2nd generation contrast-enhanced ultrasound could guide the sampling needle to the correct area of the thrombus.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic value of contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) in characterising focal liver lesions in cirrhosis and to validate its use in lesions discovered during surveillance for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). MATERIALS AND METHODS Between 2003 and 2006, 128 cirrhotic patients with focal liver lesions at baseline ultrasonography (US) were studied by power colour Doppler US (Doppler US) and CEUS. Serum alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) levels were assessed in all patients. Fine-needle biopsy or other reference modalities such as computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or digital subtraction angiography (DSA) were used as the gold standard. The accuracy of baseline US, Doppler US, AFP levels, combined US and AFP levels and combined US, Doppler US and CEUS in characterising focal liver lesions was assessed. Diagnostic performance was compared using the McNemar test. RESULTS A total of 207 focal liver lesions (101 benign and 106 malignant) were identified in 128 patients. CEUS sensitivity and specificity for lesion characterisation were 96.2% and 97.0%, respectively, whereas its positive and negative predictive values were 97.1% and 96.1%. CEUS accuracy was 96.6%, higher than that of US (72.0%), Doppler US (70.0%), AFP levels (65.7%), combined US and Doppler US (70.0%) and combined US and AFP levels (90.3%). The differences between US and CEUS were statistically significant (p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS CEUS can characterise focal liver lesions with 96.6% accuracy, a value higher than US, Doppler US, AFP levels, combined US and AFP levels and combined US and Doppler US. CEUS should therefore be used to characterise focal liver lesions detected during HCC surveillance of cirrhotic patients.

Abstract
AIM To determine whether the findings of microflow imaging (MFI), composed of a flash replenishment and a maximum intensity holding sequence, using contrast-enhanced sonography, correlate with the degree of histological differentiation of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). METHODS This study was approved by the institutional review board; patients gave informed consent. The samples comprised of 61 nodules histologically diagnosed as HCC: 20 well-differentiated, 26 moderately-differentiated, and 15 poorly-differentiated HCC. SonoVue was used as the ultrasound (US) contrast agent. The US equipment used was a SSA-770 A with the imaging mode set at MFI. MFI is an imaging method combining flash replenishment imaging and maximum intensity holding. Two independent readers (readers 1 and 2) classified the microflow images into four patterns: (i) normal pattern; (ii) cotton pattern; (iii) vascular pattern; and (iv) dead wood pattern. The results were compared with the degree of histopathological differentiation of the HCC. RESULTS In each of the 61 HCC, blood vessels in the tumor were clearly resolved down to their fine branches. With regard to the relationship between imaging patterns and thehistological findings, it was found (with high percentages) that the normal and cotton patterns were associated with well-differentiated HCC, that the vascular pattern was associated with moderately-differentiated HCC, and that the dead wood pattern was associated with poorly-differentiated HCC. If HCC with the normal and cotton patterns were assessed as well differentiated and those with the vascular or dead wood pattern were assessed as moderately or poorly differentiated, the sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of these assessments were found to be 85%, 92.7%, and 90%, respectively, for reader 1, and 85%, 82.9%, and 83.6%, respectively, for reader 2. CONCLUSION The angioarchitecture and hemodynamics of HCC could be evaluated in detail using MFI. The results of this study demonstrate the feasibility of a non-invasive preoperative diagnosis of the histological differentiation of HCC using MFI.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical and economic consequences of the introduction of contrast-enhanced ultrasonography (CEUS) into the diagnostic clinical algorithm for the characterization of incidental focal liver lesions (FLLs). METHODS This prospective study enrolled 485 subjects at three hospitals in Italy. Two diagnostic algorithms were utilized: (1) a classic patient work-up, which included baseline US followed by a CT or MR examination, and (2) a new patient management scheme in which, following the baseline US, a CEUS examination was performed. For each pathway, both direct and indirect health costs for the National Health System (NHS) at two of the three hospitals involved in the study were calculated. Clinical outcome was measured in terms of number of cases correctly diagnosed, using contrast-enhanced CT/contrast-enhanced MR as the reference standard. RESULTS CEUS correctly differentiated (benign vs. malignant) 559 of 575 lesions (97.2%), with a sensitivity of 98.1% and a specificity of 95.7%. Histological characterization was correct in 502 of 575 lesions (87%) with a sensitivity of 90.5% and a specificity of 85.4%. In terms of cost, the conventional diagnostic algorithm incurred for the NHS a total cost of Euro 134.576,60 vs. Euro 55.674,30 with CEUS, for a saving of Euro 78.902 (Euro 162 per patient). For the hospitals, the total cost was Euro 147.045 without CEUS vs Euro 61.979 with CEUS, for a saving of Euro 85.065,96 or Euro 175,39 per patient. CONCLUSION The routine use of CEUS for the characterization of FLLs provides significant cost savings, both for the NHS and for the hospital.

Abstract
AIM To determine whether parametric imaging correlates with the degree of histological differentiation of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). METHODS The samples comprised 49 nodules diagnosed histologically as HCC: 19 well differentiated (w-HCC), 22 moderately differentiated (m-HCC), and eight poorly differentiated (p-HCC). The ultrasound (US) equipment used was SSA-770 A (Toshiba Medical Systems, Otawara, Japan) and the contrast agent was SonoVue (Bracco, Milan, Italy). After 1.5 mL of SonoVue was injected intravenously and staining of the tumors and parenchyma was confirmed, microbubbles in the scanned volume were eliminated using high mechanical index (MI) scanning frames. The "arrival time (T(A)) images," reflecting beta-values, were displayed with color codes at the phase after reperfusion. Images at the phase when the staining reached a plateau (90-180 s) were used as "A images," reflecting A values. These images were compared between each histological grade of differentiation. RESULTS Analysis of T(A) images indicated that beta-values in m-HCC were higher than those in the adjacent non-tumor parenchyma in all 22 samples and also were significantly higher than in the other HCCs (P < 0.001 for w-HCC; P < 0.05 for p-HCC). Furthermore, beta-values in p-HCC samples had significantly larger variations in terms of time and space than in the other HCCs (P < 0.001 for w-HCC; P < 0.01 for m-HCC). Analysis of A images indicated that the A value for w-HCC was significantly higher than those for either m-HCC or p-HCC (P < 0.001). CONCLUSION Both T(A) and A images were useful for diagnosing the histological differentiation of HCC.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIM Aim of this study was to compare contrast-enhanced ultrasound and multi-detector row computed tomography in detecting arterial hypervascularity in small cirrhotic nodules. PATIENTS AND METHODS Sixty-two nodules (41 measuring 1.0-2.0 cm, 21 measuring 2.1-3.0 cm) found in 55 cirrhotic patients were examined with both methods. Lesions displaying arterial hypervascularity with washout in the portal/venous phase on both studies were considered hepatocellular carcinomas and treated; all other nodules were subjected to ultrasound-guided fine-needle biopsy. RESULTS The larger nodules (2.1-3.0 cm) included 19 hepatocellular carcinomas (90%), 1 macroregenerative nodule type I and 1 macroregenerative nodule type II; 35 (87%) of the smaller nodules were hepatocellular carcinomas, 2 were macroregenerative nodules type I, 2 macroregenerative nodules type II and 2 hemangiomas. The two studies yielded concordant findings for 54 nodules (87%), including 46 hypervascular on both examinations and 8 that were consistently hypovascular. Two of the latter nodules were hepatocellular carcinomas. The other eight nodules displayed arterial hypervascularity on only one of the studies. Six of these (75%) were hepatocellular carcinomas, including five that were negative in the contrast-enhanced ultrasound study. CONCLUSION Computed tomography and contrast-enhanced ultrasound show high agreement in the vascular classification of small nodules detected by ultrasound in cirrhotic livers, although the former technique was slightly more sensitive in the detection of arterial hypervascularization.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to compare the accuracy rates of unenhanced sonography, contrast-enhanced sonography, and MRI in displaying the anatomic features of cystic pancreatic masses larger than 1.5 mm in diameter. MATERIALS AND METHODS Unenhanced and contrast-enhanced sonographic and MRI examinations of 33 patients who underwent resection of a cystic pancreatic mass were retrospectively reviewed. Two radiologists blinded to the final histologic diagnosis reviewed the images, specifically assessing the presence of intralesional mural nodules and septa. Sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values, and accuracy were calculated on the basis of correlation with surgical findings. Results of unenhanced sonography, contrast-enhanced sonography, and MRI were compared by McNemar test. Correlation of unenhanced and contrast-enhanced sonographic versus pathologic results was established with Spearman's test. Interobserver variability was determined. RESULTS Contrast-enhanced sonography correctly depicted intralesional septa in 14 of 15 lesions (sensitivity, 93.3%; specificity, 88.8%; positive predictive value, 87.5%; negative predictive value, 94.1%; accuracy, 90.9%) and nodules in six of eight lesions (sensitivity, 75%; specificity, 96%; positive predictive value, 85.7%; negative predictive value, 92.3%; accuracy, 90.9%). MRI correctly depicted intralesional septa in 14 of 15 lesions (sensitivity, 93.3%; specificity, 61.1%; positive predictive value, 66.6%; negative predictive value, 91.6%; accuracy, 75.7%) and nodules in seven of eight lesions (sensitivity, 87.5%; specificity, 80%; positive predictive value, 58.3%; negative predictive value, 95.2%; accuracy, 81.8%). The difference between the diagnostic accuracy of contrast-enhanced sonography and that of MRI was not significant (p = 0.05, McNemar test) in the identification of septa and nodules. The correlation between contrast-enhanced sonographic findings and pathologic results (Rs = 0.93; p < 0.001) was significantly better than that between sonographic and pathologic results (Rs = 0.52; p < 0.0001). Interobserver agreement had a kappa value of 0.86-0.94. CONCLUSION Contrast-enhanced sonography compares favorably with MRI in displaying the anatomic features of cystic pancreatic masses seen on transabdominal sonography.

Abstract
To evaluate the ability of contrast enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) in monitoring percutaneous thermal ablation procedure in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in comparison with contrast enhanced computed tomography (CECT) and/or magnetic resonance imaging (CEMRI). A total of 151 patients were enrolled in the study. Before the radio-frequency (RF) or microwave ablation treatment, tumor vascularity was assessed in 139 patients with three imaging modalities i.e., US (139 exams), CEUS (139 exams) and CECT (103 exams)/CEMR (36 exams). CEUS examination was performed using a sulphur hexafluoride-filled microbubble contrast agent (SonoVue((R)), Bracco, Milan, Italy) and real-time contrast-specific imaging techniques. Within 30 +/- 7 d after the ablation procedure, 118/139 patients were monitored to assess the tumor response to treatment. Before ablation, contrast enhancement within tumor was observed in 129/139 (92.8%) patients with CEUS and 133/139 (95.7%) patients with CECT/CEMRI. Compared with CECT/CEMRI, CEUS sensitivity and accuracy in detecting tumor vascularity were 97.0% and 94.2%, respectively. One month after treatment, no enhancement was seen in 110/118 (93.2%) both on CEUS and CECT/CEMRI. Concordance between CEUS and CECT/CEMR on the presence of residual vascularization was obtained in four patients (true positive). The specificity and accuracy of CEUS in detecting tumor vascularity were 98.2% and 96.6%, respectively. The periprocedural impact of SonoVue administration on the assessment of treatment extent was also evaluated in a subgroup of patients and CEUS showed its superiority compared with baseline US in defining treatment outcome. In conclusion, in the detection of HCC tumor vascularity and assessment of response to thermal ablation after 1 month, real time CEUS provided results comparable to those obtained with CECT/CEMRI. CEUS examination proved to be a safe and easy to access procedure, with potential for diagnostic impact in the clinical practice.

Abstract
The development of new ultrasound (US) contrast agents and sonographic techniques has considerably improved the possibilities of ultrasound in the assessment of liver tumors. An overview is given on diagnostic potential of contrast-enhanced US (CEUS) and real-time low mechanical index technique in the detection of various focal liver lesions compared with computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging or intraoperative US. In two of our own studies that included 100 patients each we showed an increase of correct findings in CEUS compared with B-mode US from 64% to 87% and from 67% to 84% as confirmed by intraoperative evaluation of the liver. Especially after chemotherapy and in the case of small metastases, significantly more metastases were correctly detected by CEUS compared with B-mode US. These results and clinical study results in the literature show that CEUS allows tumor detection and direct visualization of the tumor vascularity and put contrast-enhanced sonography among recommended noninvasive imaging methods for focal liver lesions with improvements in diagnostic strategy.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to define the indications, diagnostic accuracy and limitations of second-generation sonographic contrast agents in the evaluation of patients with renal trauma. MATERIALS AND METHODS Between March 2004 and April 2005, 277 patients with blunt abdominal trauma were evaluated. Twenty-eight out of 277 patients had renal lesions, the severity of which was graded according to the organ injury severity scale of the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma (AAST). All the patients enrolled in the study had minor trauma and were evaluated with baseline ultrasound (US), contrast-enhanced US after injection of a second-generation contrast agent (SonoVue) and, if positive, with multiphasic multidetector computed tomography (MDCT). RESULTS Five out of 28 traumatic parenchymal lesions with perirenal fluid collection were identified at baseline US. All 28 renal parenchymal lesions, with or without perirenal or retroperitoneal haematoma, were identified at contrast-enhanced US. Multiphase MDCT confirmed all the cases that were positive at contrast-enhanced US and demonstrated the integrity of the urinary tract in the delayed phase. CONCLUSIONS Our experience confirmed the diagnostic accuracy of second-generation sonographic contrast material both for diagnosis and for appropriate patient management. In particular, contrast-enhanced sonography proved to be a reliable technique for the evaluation and follow-up of low-grade renal injuries. Its main advantage is reduced radiation exposure, as fewer MDCT examinations are needed, whereas its limitation is the high cost of the technique if used in unselected patients.

Abstract
Three dogs with a splenic hemangiosarcoma were imaged with conventional gray-scale ultrasound and no lesions were identified in the liver. After administration of intravenous ultrasound contrast medium (Definity) small, poorly enhanced, hypoechoic nodules were identified in the liver in each dog. The spleen and liver lesions were identified at surgery and the dogs underwent splenectomy and nodule biopsy. All lesions were identified histologically as hemangiosarcoma. These preliminary results suggest that contrast ultrasound may result in improved detectability of metastatic hepatic hemangiosarcoma.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Objective of the present study was to assess activity or vascularization of focal liver lesions in alveolar echinococcosis (AE) using [18F]fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) in comparison with contrast enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) and three-phase helical computed tomography (CT). METHODS In this prospective study, 17 patients with confirmed AE of the liver were included (6 males, 11 females; average age: 59 +/- 16 years; average duration of disease: 10.5 years) and were then examined using FDG-PET, precontrast ultrasound (US), CEUS, and three-phase helical CT. We assessed metabolic activity (FDG-PET) and vascularization (CEUS and CT) of Echinococcus multilocularis specific hepatic lesions. RESULTS FDG-PET identified increased metabolic activity in the corresponding lesions in seven patients (41.2%). A vascularization pattern of echinococcal lesions was visualized in 9 patients (52.9%) by CEUS and in 4 patients (23.5%) by CT. All positive FDG-PET findings were also positive at CEUS. CONCLUSIONS There was association between findings of metabolic activity in AE at FDG-PET and vascularized lesions of the liver returned by CEUS. This suggests that CEUS may represent a cost-effective tool in the decision making to perform FDG-PET examination.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIMS The advent of contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) has called into question the efficacy of standard ultrasonographic techniques. In this study, we evaluated B-mode and color-duplex imaging and CEUS in the detection of liver metastases, using intraoperative and histological findings as a reference. MATERIALS AND METHODS Before laparotomy, 108 patients suspected of having liver metastases were prospectively examined with B-mode and color-duplex imaging, followed by contrast-enhanced ultrasound (2.4 ml SonoVue). Patients with unresectable tumors (n=8) were excluded from the analysis. The sonographic diagnosis in the remaining 100 patients was compared to the intraoperative and histological findings. RESULTS/FINDINGS CEUS improved the sensitivity for detecting liver lesions from 56.3% (B-mode) to 83.8% (CEUS) (p=0.004). In particular, the contrast agent led to an improvement in ultrasonographic detection in the following cases: nodular metastases smaller than one centimeter; after adjuvant chemotherapy; for tumors near the surface of the liver; and for lesions situated around the ligamentum teres. INTERPRETATION/CONCLUSIONS CEUS provides significant improvement in the detection of liver metastases, and should therefore, be performed routinely in the surveillance of cancer patients.

Abstract
We compared the enhancement pattern of 98 hepatocellular carcinoma nodules in 92 patients on contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) and contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CECT). Contrast-enhanced ultrasound was performed with SonoVue and a low mechanical index method. In arterial phase, 98 nodules were hyperenhancing on CEUS and 94 on CECT. In portal phase, 82 nodules were hypoenhancing on CEUS and 83 on CECT. Peripheral thin-rim-like enhancement was exhibited in 30 nodules on CEUS and 31 on CECT. Intratumoral vessels were visualized in 94 nodules on CEUS and 36 on CECT.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to assess the diagnostic performance of contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) to characterize hypoechoic focal hepatic lesions (HFHL) in fatty liver (FL). A study group of 105 patients with FL and 105 HFHLs (52 malignant and 53 benign) underwent CEUS after SonoVue administration. Two blinded readers independently reviewed baseline ultrasound (US) and CEUS scans and classified each lesion as malignant or benign on a five-point scale of confidence, and recorded whether further imaging work-up was needed. Sensitivity, specificity, areas under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve (A (z)), and interobserver agreement were calculated. We observed that the diagnostic confidence improved after reviewing CEUS scans for both readers (A (z)=0.706 and 0.999 and A (z)=0.665 and 0.990 at baseline US and CEUS, respectively; p<0.0001). Inter-reader agreement increased (weighted k=0.748 at baseline US vs. 0.882 at CEUS). For both readers, after CEUS, the occurrence of correctly characterized lesions increased (from 27/105 [27.5%] to 94/105 [89.5%], and from 19/105 [18.1%] to 93/105 [88.6%], respectively; p<0.0001) and the need for further imaging decreased (from 93/105 [88.6%] to 26/105 [24.8%], and from 96/105 [91.4%] to 40/105 [38.1%], respectively; p<0.0001). We conclude that CEUS improves the diagnostic performance of radiologists in the characterization of HFHLs in FL and reduces the need for further imaging work-up.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to evaluate the correlation between the enhancement pattern of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) on contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) and tumour cellular differentiation on histopathology. 189 HCC lesions in 189 patients were retrospectively evaluated with CEUS and histopathological examination. CEUS was performed with SonoVue and contrast pulse sequencing. Histopathological diagnoses were made according to the Edmonson grading system. Significant differences were shown between the time that the HCC became hypoenhancing or remained echogenic in late phase and tumour cellular differentiation (p = 0.006; p = 0.036), but not with the time of commencement of hyperenhancing or commencement of isoenhancing in arterial phase and portal phase (p = 0.164, p = 0.113; p = 0.186, p = 0.070). The timing of HCC becoming hypoenhancing on CEUS is correlated with tumour cellular differentiation; well differentiated tumours wash out more slowly than poorly differentiated ones.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to investigate the efficacy of late-phase pulse inversion harmonic imaging (PIHI) in detecting occult metastases and to compare the results with helical computed tomography (CT) in a group of patients whose fundamental liver sonographic results were normal. METHODS Thirty-two patients (21 women and 11 men; age range, 20-87 years) with a known primary malignancy were enrolled in the study. The patients were evaluated with conventional sonography, unenhanced PIHI, and PIHI 3 minutes after the injection of Levovist (SH U 508A; Schering AG, Berlin, Germany). All patients also underwent triphasic helical CT within 1 week after sonography. In 1 patient, mangafodipir-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging was performed as part of the clinical workup. RESULTS After Levovist injection, in 4 (12.5%) of 32 patients, at least 1 hypoechoic lesion was detected by PIHI; multiple lesions were shown in 1 patient. The mean diameter of newly detected lesions was 12 mm. Triphasic helical CT also showed all of the lesions that were detected by PIHI. The diagnoses were confirmed by biopsy and CT findings in 2 patients and by the typical CT and magnetic resonance imaging findings in 1 patient. For the fourth patient, the diagnosis was confirmed by follow-up and CT. Conclusions. Late-phase PIHI is comparable to helical CT for detecting occult hepatic metastases, but it protects patients from the potentially hazardous effects of radiation and iodinated contrast agents. Further series involving a larger number of patients are needed to determine its place in the evaluation of cancer staging and treatment planning.

Abstract
With the introduction of microbubble contrast agents, diagnostic ultrasound has entered a new era that allows the dynamic detection of tissue flow of both the macro and microvasculature. Underpinning this development is the fact that gases are compressible, and thus the microbubbles expand and contract in the alternating pressure waves of the ultrasound beam, while tissue is almost incompressible. Special software using multiple pulse sequences separates these signals from those of tissue and displays them as an overlay or on a split screen. This can be done at low acoustic pressures (MI<0.3) so that the microbubbles are not destroyed and scanning can continue in real time. The clinical roles of contrast enhanced ultrasound scanning are expanding rapidly. They are established in echocardiography to improve endocardial border detection and are being developed for myocardial perfusion. In radiology, the most important application is the liver, especially for focal disease. The approach parallels that of dynamic CT or MRI but ultrasound has the advantages of high spatial and temporal resolution. Thus, small lesions that can be indeterminate on CT can often be studied with ultrasound, and situations where the flow is very rapid (e.g., focal nodular hyperplasia where the first few seconds of arterial perfusion may be critical to making the diagnosis) are readily studied. Microbubbles linger in the extensive sinusoidal space of normal liver for several minutes whereas they wash out rapidly from metastases, which have a low vascular volume and thus appear as filling defects. The method has been shown to be as sensitive as three-phase CT. Microbubbles have clinical uses in many other applications where knowledge of the microcirculation is important (the macrocirculation can usually be assessed adequately using conventional Doppler though there are a few important situations where the signal boost given by microbubbles is useful, e.g., transcranial Doppler for evaluating vasospasm after subarachnoid haemorrhage). An important situation where demonstrating tissue devitalisation is important is in interstitial ablation of focal liver lesions: using microbubble contrast agents at the end of a procedure allows immediate evaluation of the adequacy of the ablation which can be extended if needed; this is much more convenient and cost-saving than moving the patient to CT and perhaps needing an additional ablation session at a later date. Similar considerations suggest that contrast-enhanced ultrasound might have a role in abdominal trauma: injury to the liver, spleen and kidneys can be assessed rapidly and repeatedly if necessary. Its role here alongside dynamic CT remains to be evaluated. Infarcts or ischaemia and regions of abnormal vascularity, especially in malignancies, in the kidneys and spleen seem to be useful and improved detection of the neovascularisation of ovarian carcinomas is promising. Similar benefits in the head-and-neck and in the skin while the demonstration of the neovascularisation of atheromatous plaques and of aggressive joint inflammation offer interesting potentials.

Abstract
The usefulness of intraoperative ultrasonography (IOUS) has been documented in the Literature since the Eighties and, although its main applications are in hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery, it has been used also in neurosurgery, cardiovascular and endocrine surgery. The continuous technical developments have led to an increase in the diagnostic accuracy of IOUS from the Eighties to now. The use of IOUS has increased in time together with the technical innovations until, mainly in the midnineties, its value was recognized by many surgeons. This results have been obtained with scanners that allow to depict fine anatomical details and detect small lesions in real time with extremely high spatial resolution. IOUS is able to shows fine details, such as primary or secondary lesions not detectable with other preoperative imaging modalities or tumor extension and its relationship with vessels. Assessment of resectability by IOUS may determine important changes in therapeutic planning. The role of IOUS, however, has recently been down-sized, especially in those centers where preoperative imaging is advanced. This article will review the clinical role of pancreatic IOUS in the different pancreatic pathologies.

Abstract
Ultrasound examination is the first imaging modality for hepatic study in neoplastic and chronic liver diseases. Focal liver lesions frequently cause diagnostic problems in terms of characterization, especially when small and hypoechoic to the rest of the parenchyma. Contrast--enhanced ultrasonography (CEUS) has shown its value in the characterization of focal liver lesions. This study assessed the value of the sinusoidal phase of CEUS with a second-generation contrast agent in the characterization of focal liver lesions to distinguish benign from malignant. Two hundred hepatic lesions with suspicious features at baseline ultrasound were prospectively studied with CEUS. Sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values, and diagnostic accuracy of the sinusoidal phase in the characterization of benign versus malignant liver lesions were evaluated. Hypoechogenicity of the focal liver lesion, during the sinusoidal phase of CEUS, allowed the diagnosis of malignancy with a sensitivity of 85%, specificity of 88%, positive predictive value of 92%, negative predictive value of 77%, and diagnostic accuracy of 86%. The diagnostic confidence in the diagnosis of malignancy significantly increased, with receiver operating characteristic curve areas from 0.536 for baseline ultrasound to 0.902 for the sinusoidal phase of CEUS.

Abstract
Hemangiopericytoma is a rare and characteristically hypervascular tumour. We report a case of hepatic metastases of hemangiopericytoma for which there was correlative imaging by ultrasonography, ultrasonography with second-generation contrast agent (BR1), computed tomography, gadolinium-enhanced, Gd-BOPTA-enhanced and ferumoxides-enhanced magnetic resonance, and angiography. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case in which all these modalities were used in the diagnostic evaluation.

Abstract
To assess the feasibility of contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) of the thyroid gland and to evaluate the potential of this method for characterising solitary thyroid nodules.18 patients affected by solitary thyroid nodules (size range: 0.6 to 3.6 cm; mean: 1.8 cm) confirmed by surgery (nine papillary carcinomas, four follicular carcinomas, three hyperplasias, one follicular adenoma and one Plummer's adenoma) underwent pulse inversion US at low M.I. (0.06 to 0.08) after i.v. injection of a 2.4-mL bolus of SonoVue. Baseline echogenicity and the dynamic enhancement pattern of each nodule, in comparison with adjacent thyroid parenchyma, were assessed. Signal intensity values on grey-scale images were also calculated at baseline, 30 s, 60 s and 120 s after SonoVue administration. Following administration of SonoVue, malignant nodules showed absent (4 out of 13), faint dotted (4 out of 13) and diffuse (5 out of 13) contrast enhancement, in this last case inhomogeneous (4 out of 5 cases) or homogeneous (1 out of 5). Benign nodules showed diffuse contrast enhancement, both homogeneous (3 out of 5) and heterogeneous (2 out of 5). Quantitative data have confirmed subjective findings, but CEUS never modified precontrast analysis. CEUS of thyroid gland is a feasible technique, but overlapping findings seem to limit the potential of this technique in the characterization of thyroid nodules.

Abstract
Recent advances in contrast material-enhanced ultrasonography (US) mainly include (a) development of low-acoustic-pressure (low-mechanical-index) harmonic software, capable of obtaining real-time images without disrupting contrast material microbubbles, and (b) commercialization of new contrast media ("second-generation" contrast media), capable of producing intense echo signals in this low-mechanical-index setting. With use of low-mechanical-index continuous-mode contrast-enhanced US, the circulatory kinetic models of various focal liver lesions can be displayed dynamically. Hepatic lesions usually have typical perfusion characteristics and enhancement patterns through the various phases of parenchymal enhancement, which helps characterize lesions and, in most cases, allows definitive diagnosis, even among lesions that exhibit very similar baseline appearances. Because of the use of harmonic technologies at low emission frequencies, there is some loss of spatial resolution and overall image quality, typically resulting in a grainy appearance. In addition, lesion depth affects the detectability of vascularity to some degree in that poor signal arises from deep-seated lesions. Moreover, liver attenuation (eg, in patients with steatosis or chronic liver disease) further reduces the sensitivity of contrast-enhanced US. Nevertheless, with its unique capacity to provide images in real time, low-mechanical-index contrast-enhanced US is the dynamic imaging modality of choice in the differential diagnosis of focal liver lesions.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We describe the spectrum of contrast-enhancement patterns of benign hepatic tumors arising in fatty liver on contrast-enhanced ultrasound (US). METHODS Sixteen patients (12 women and four men) with 27 benign hepatic tumors (17 hemangiomas, eight focal nodular hyperplasias, and two hepatocellular adenomas) arising in fatty liver underwent baseline and pulse inversion US after administration of SonoVue. Two experienced radiologists evaluated baseline echogenicity and dynamic enhancement pattern of each lesion in comparison with adjacent liver parenchyma. RESULTS After administration of SonoVue, in the arterial phase 13 of 17 hemangiomas showed peripheral globular enhancement and one showed a rim of peripheral enhancement, followed by progressive centripetal fill-in, which was complete in 10 of 14 cases and incomplete in four. Three of 18 hemangiomas showed rapid and complete fill-in in the arterial phase. Eight of eight focal nodular hyperplasias became hyperechoic in comparison with adjacent liver parenchyma in the arterial phase and slightly hyperechoic or isoechoic in the portal venous and delayed phases. Both adenomas showed strong arterial contrast enhancement that became less intense in the portal venous and delayed phases. CONCLUSION Contrast-enhanced US after administration of SonoVue enables depiction of typical contrast-enhancement patterns in most benign hepatic tumors arising in fatty liver, thus providing useful clues for characterization.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Our objective was to evaluate the accuracy of a blood-pool sonographic contrast agent in the late phase compared with the three vascular phases for differentiation between benign and malignant focal liver lesions. SUBJECTS AND METHODS In 152 patients (105 with chronic liver disease), 152 solid focal liver lesions characterized either by fine-needle biopsy or by dynamic CT or MRI were studied. The final diagnoses were metastasis for 24, hepatocellular carcinoma for 75, focal nodular hyperplasia for 13, regenerating or dysplastic nodule for 14, hemangioma for 22, cholangiocarcinoma for two, and another focal liver lesion for two. Real-time sonography was performed after a bolus injection of 2.4 mL of SonoVue, using a low mechanical index (< 0.2). All lesions were evaluated in the arterial, portal, and late phases; classified as benign or malignant; and correlated with final diagnoses. RESULTS For discrimination between malignant and benign focal liver lesions, evaluation of all vascular phases improved the sensitivity from 78.4% to 98% and the accuracy from 80.9% to 92.7%, compared with evaluation of the late phase alone. The increase in accuracy was higher in patients with chronic liver disease (16.3%) than in those without (2.1%). CONCLUSION Evaluation of SonoVue enhancement in all three vascular phases is superior to evaluation of SonoVue enhancement in the late phase alone, especially in patients with chronic liver disease.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to compare contrast-enhanced gray-scale harmonic ultrasound with multiphasic spiral computed tomography in the assessment of treatment efficacy of non-surgically treated HCC. METHODS We studied 56 HCCs treated by percutaneous ethanol injection (31 cases), radiofrequency ablation (three cases), trans-arterial chemoembolization (12 cases), and combined treatment (10 cases). The efficacy of therapies was blindly assessed by multiphasic computed tomography and gray-scale harmonic ultrasound with a second-generation contrast agent (sulfur hexafluoride). RESULTS On computed tomography 30 tumors (53.6%) showed complete necrosis, while 26 lesions (45.4%) were still viable. On contrast-enhanced ultrasound examination 33/56 nodules (58.9%) had no contrast enhancement in the arterial phase, while 23/56 lesions (41.1%) were still vascularized. All the nodules assessed as completely necrotic on computed tomography did not show arterial enhancement on contrast-enhanced ultrasound and diagnostic agreement was found in 53/56 cases (94.6%) (P<0.001). Contrast-enhanced ultrasound demonstrated relative sensitivity and specificity of 87.0% and 98.4%. CONCLUSIONS Contrast-enhanced harmonic ultrasound is promising in the efficacy evaluation of ablation treatments for HCC. Nodules vascularized in the arterial phase on contrast harmonic ultrasound should be considered still viable and addressed to additional treatment without further evaluation.

Abstract
Contrast-enhanced ultrasonography, a new imaging modality in veterinary medicine, can provide data on tissue perfusion. The objective of this study was to use the ultrasonographic contrast agent SonoVue to evaluate various transit time indices in the normal canine liver, to examine the effect of anesthesia on these parameters, and to evaluate the safety of this agent in dogs. The liver of 11 healthy dogs was studied by ultrasound during an intravenous bolus injection of SonoVue. Each dog underwent the examination twice, first with and later without the use of anesthesia. A time-intensity curve was generated from a selected region of interest within the liver from each scanning session. Ratios derived from peak enhancement, time to peak enhancement, up-slope and full-width half-maximum (FWHM) of the curve were calculated from the time-intensity curves, and are reported. There were no statistically significant differences (P > 0.05) in peak enhancement, up-slope and FWHM between dogs that were anesthetized and dogs that were not. Time to peak enhancement, however, was significantly shorter when the dogs were anesthetized than when they were nonanesthetized (P < 0.05). There were no biologically significant changes in clinical laboratory findings. This study indicates that contrast-enhanced ultrasound using SonoVue gives reproducible liver perfusion data, and appears to be a safe and well-tolerated agent for use in dogs. When considering normal values, the use of anesthetic drugs has to be considered.

Abstract
AIM: To investigate the vasculature of rabbit liver metastatic lesions by color Doppler imaging and power Doppler imaging (PDI) techniques.
METHODS: Eight New Zealand rabbits with implanted VX2 liver tumors were used. All ultrasound examinations were performed with a HP 5500 color Doppler ultrasound scanner. Before and after the injection of contrast agent, the changes of gray scale and the periphery and intralesional blood flow of the liver metastatic lesion were carefully observed by B mode ultrasound, color Doppler flow imaging (CDFI) and PDI.
RESULTS: Twelve lesions were found in the eight rabbits with implanted VX2 liver tumors, whose diameter ranged from 1.6 to 4.8 cm. Echoes of these lesions were not characterized and has lack of specificity. After the injection of contrast agent, the numbers of dot or strip-like flow messages increased both at the periphery and inside of these lesions under the mode of CDFI and PDI, and were more pronounced under PDI. Morphology of intralesional vessels extended, even branched and some signals were clearly found encircling the lesion. And some vessels were found penetrating into the center of the lesion.
CONCLUSION: PDI after injection of self-made echo contrast agent can show a pronounced sensitivity than that of B mode ultrasound and CDFI in diagnosis of vascularity of a metastatic lesion.

Abstract
Contrast-enhanced sonography performed as phase inversion harmonic imaging is a promising new technique for detection and characterization of hepatic foci. It has been reported that malignant liver tumors can be differentiated from benign entities with almost 100% sensitivity and that diagnosis of the type is possible with an accuracy of over 90%. The following report describes seven of our own cases and then compares the results we obtained with current knowledge, followed by a discussion. In summary, most hepatic lesions can be correctly characterized by supplemental use of enhanced sonography; practitioners should nevertheless be aware of atypical phenomena to be able to critically evaluate the findings.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate the late sinusoidal phase of contrast enhancement with a 2nd-generation ultrasound contrast enhanced medium in the characterization of hypoechoic focal liver lesions. METHODS We studied 88 hypoechoic liver lesions (diameter range, 1-18 cm; with 18 lesions 2 cm or less) found on conventional grayscale sonography (US) with contrast-enhanced ultrasonography (CEUS). Final diagnosis was made using contrast enhanced helical CT, contrast enhanced MR, angiography (DSA), and/or histopathic confirmation or clinical imaging follow-up. RESULTS There were 37/88 benign lesions demonstrated: 17 cavernous hemangiomas, 3 capillary hemangiomas, 11 focal nodular hyperplasias (FNH), 3 focal areas of sparing in hepatic steatosis, 2 adenomas, and 1 intrahepatic necrotic area. Malignant lesions demonstrated included 51/88: 27 hepatocellular carcinomas (HCC) in cirrhosis, 11 metastatic carcinomas, 10 metastatic endocrine tumors, 2 cholangiocellular carcinomas (CCC) and 1 non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL). CEUS characterized 30/37 (81%) benign lesions and 45/51 (88%) malignant lesions. On the basis of the results obtained during the sinusoidal contrast enhanced phase of CEUS, diagnosis of benignancy was possible in 35/37 (95%) of benign liver lesions and diagnosis of malignancy in 49/51 (96%) of malignant liver lesions. The enhancement pattern of 13 small (< or = 2 cm in diameter) hypervascular liver lesions (3 capillary hemangiomas, 2 FNHs, 4 HCCs, 4 metastatic endocrine tumors) was better demonstrated on CEUS than on helical CT. In these cases the hyper vascularization of the lesions shown on CEUS was not confirmed on CT. CONCLUSIONS CEUS distinguished malignant from benign hypoechoic liver lesions with an accuracy of 95%.

Abstract
The prevalence of benign focal liver lesions (BFLL) is high both in the general population and in patients with known malignancies. The gray-scale ultrasound (US) technique is usually the first-line imaging modality used in the radiological workup of such lesions, but unfortunately it lacks specificity. Furthermore, Doppler examination may often be unsatisfactory owing to motion artefacts, or when small or deeply located lesions are evaluated. Recently, microbubble-based contrast agents used in combination with gray-scale US techniques, which are very sensitive to nonlinear behavior of microbubbles, have led to a better depiction of both microvasculature and macrovasculature of focal hepatic masses, thus improving the reliability of using US in the assessment of liver tumors. This review illustrates the spectrum of enhancement patterns of BFLL on contrast-enhanced ultrasonography with SonoVue, a second-generation microbubble-based contrast agent.

Abstract
The recent introduction of high quality scanners and contrast agents for ultrasound deeply modifies diagnosis strategy in focal liver lesions by using validated criteria. Non-linear imaging methods using low mechanical index (MI<0.2) and second generation contrast agents allow real-time continuous imaging with concomitant limitation in background tIssue signal and also in agent collapse for a high quality contrast imaging giving dramatic improvement in detection and characterization of lesions. Interpretation is based on the presence of contrast agent within the lesion or not (hyper-, hypo- or isosignal) and the delay after injection (arterial, portal or parenchymal or late phase) as previously used by non-ultrasound methods. This allows an easy differentiation of benign from malignant lesions. Moreover, this allows complete characterization in 85 to 95% of all focal liver lesions and 75% in hepatocellular carcinomas. Those results markedly improve ultrasound accuracy compared to conventional sonography and so put contrast-enhanced sonography among recommended non-invasive imaging methods for focal liver lesions with changes in diagnostic strategy according to the lesion type and actual place of US methods. It is recommended to use contrast ultrasound methods in cancer staging for an optimal detection of liver metastases as well as in characterization of lesions detected during conventional sonography with a consecutive decrease of cost-diagnosis ratio.

Abstract
Diagnostic imaging techniques are an important part of the diagnostic workup and staging of cancer patients. Ultrasound is of particular interest in this respect. In so far as tumor metastases are concerned, ultrasonography of regional lymph nodes and of the liver can provide valuable information. In humans many criteria, some of them objective, have been evaluated as indicators of malignancy. The most diagnostically helpful of these include the short/long axis ratio of the lymph node, the pattern of distribution of the blood vessels within the lymph node, and to some extent the calculated values for resistive and pulsatility indices. Putative objective criteria to improve the specificity of ultrasound for metastases detection in the liver have also been evaluated. These include perfusion indices, primarily using analysis of Doppler frequencies (Doppler perfusion index) and hepatic venography using an ultrasound contrast agent. Contrast-enhanced ultrasonography is a new and promising area to help the initial diagnosis and characterization of malignancy, particularly for focal lesions in the liver. This review discusses the use of ultrasound for detection of metastases and presents material from four veterinary cases.

Abstract
Ultrasound imaging (US) is a convenient, inexpensive and non-invasive investigation. Its use is limited by low sensitivity in the detection of a number of parenchymal lesions, especially those produced by trauma, such as infarctions. Contrast enhancement with SonoVue improves the sensitivity of ultrasound in the detection and characterization of focal liver lesions to such an extent, that it may replace computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Preliminary experience suggests that SonoVue-enhanced sonography may be useful in the detection of lesions in which blood flow is severely reduced as compared to surrounding parenchyma, such as infarctions, lacerations, hematomas, necrotic tissue and non-vascular cysts, especially in the spleen, kidney and pancreas. This technique can also rule out occlusion of the superior mesenteric, splenic and portal veins, and dilation of the biliary tree. Clinical trials comparing contrast-enhanced sonography with contrast-enhanced computed tomography are warranted to establish the role of this inexpensive and non-invasive technique in the routine work-up of patients with abdominal trauma or presenting with sudden flank pain.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIMS Diagnosis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) relies strongly on the detection of hypervascularity in the arterial phase and, in this setting, spiral computed tomography (CT) is the most widely used method. This prospective study aimed to investigate the usefulness of low mechanical index harmonic ultrasound (US), using a second generation contrast-enhanced technique, in the assessment of vascular pattern of HCC shown to be hypervascular at spiral CT. METHODS A total of 79 cirrhotic patients with 103 nodules (mean+/-SD 28+/-13 mm) with arterial hypervascularity at spiral CT were studied. US examination was performed by perfusional sonography, using a new dedicated technology (CnTI-Esaote trade mark ), operating at low mechanical index, after injection of a second generation contrast agent (SonoVue trade mark -Bracco), allowing detection of tumoral flow during arterial phase. RESULTS Selective arterial enhancement on perfusional sonography was observed in 94 /103 nodules (91.3%), with a sensitivity of 66.6, 87.5, 91.7, and 97.3% in nodules </=1 cm, >1</=2 cm, >2</=3 cm, and >3 cm respectively. CONCLUSIONS Perfusional sonography shows good diagnostic agreement with spiral CT in hypervascular HCC and may be proposed for the immediate vascular characterization of nodules detected at US and used as second imaging technique to confirm hypervascularity in cirrhotic nodules.

Abstract
In patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) surgical resection so far offers potential cure. Due to the frequent association with liver cirrhosis less then 30% of patients with HCC can be resected. In unresectable cases, radiofrequency ablation (RFA) offers an effective treatment alternative. Substantial improvements in the development of powerful generators (up to 250 W) combined with expandable, closed or open-perfused needle electrodes, provide coagulation necroses up to 5 cm in diameter. Most recently primary technical success rates of 85 to 100% were reported. Following RFA of HCC's (diameter up to 2,8 cm) 1-, 2-, 3 and 5-year survival was reported to be 97, 89, 71 and 48%. Low complication rates of 0-12% and a mortality of 0-1% indicate the minimal-invasive character of RFA. Basic principles, technique, indications, contraindications and limitations of percutaneous RFA will be discussed together with a presentation of own cases and a review of literature.

Abstract
Radiofrequency (RF) treatments of non-resectable hepatic tumors are generally guided with real-time sonography, which, however, cannot differentiate necrotic changes from viable tumor. To achieve complete treatment of hepatic tumors, accurate imaging techniques are needed for close treatment follow-up. Usually contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are used; however, they can be performed only at the end of treatment sessions. In this field, contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) has shown to improve the sensitivity of plain ultrasonography. Recently, further developments of contrast-enhanced US technique have significantly increased its clinical utility. Continuous mode, low MI scans performed with harmonic imaging and contrast specific software appears as a very useful technique for the visualization of both macro- and microcirculation with depiction of tumor vascularisation. In our hospital, we have been employing contrast-enhanced sonography with sulphur hexaflouride microbubbles (SonoVue, Bracco, Italy) before, during and immediately at the end of RF ablation procedures to monitor and assess the therapeutic result prior to closing the treatment session. The results obtained in a group of 109 patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in liver cirrhosis (192 lesions) and in 53 patients with liver metastases (97 lesions) undergoing a single session of percutaneous RF tumor ablation, showed that the sensitivity of CEUS for the detection of residual tumor was almost equivalent to that of contrast-enhanced helical CT. More importantly, since the introduction of intraoperative CEUS the rate of partially unablated tumors has dropped from 16.1 to 5.9%. Cost-effectiveness and reduction of patients' discomfort related to the need of re-treatment are the two most outstanding advantages of CEUS in this field.

Abstract
We report the use of contrast-enhanced ultrasonography as an immediate means of assessing the clinical response to high-intensity focused ultrasound (US) or HIFU treatment of liver tumours. HIFU is a noninvasive transcutaneous technique for the ablation of tumours that has been shown to destroy tumour vasculature, as well as to cause coagulative necrosis of tumour cells. As a dynamic indicator of tissue perfusion, microbubble contrast agents have already been reported to increase the diagnostic sensitivity of ultrasonography in the detection of liver tumours. This report documents the ability of one i.v. microbubble contrast agent (SonoVue, Bracco, Italy) to delineate the extent of HIFU ablation by comparison of pre- and immediately posttreatment perfusion within the target tumour. Observed changes were seen to correlate well with the ablated volume on histologic evaluation of the treated volume. This is the first time that this imaging technique has been reported in this setting.

Abstract
IOUS is the most accurate diagnostic technique for assessing focal liver lesions, but still has some drawbacks. Contrast-enhanced ultrasound examination done intraoperatively (CE-IOUS), using second generation contrast agents (SonoVue, Bracco-Imaging, Milan, Italy), seems able to overcome those aforementioned lacking aspects of IOUS. In cirrhotic patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), CE-IOUS provides information about tumor vascularity which are useful for nodules differentiation: this should improve the surgical radicality. Furthermore, two different pattern of enhancement are also recognizable at CE-IOUS in those HCC nodules depicted preoperatively: one of them has no similarity with that observed at computed tomography (CT). In patients who undergo surgery for colorectal liver metastases, CE-IOUS seems to improve the sensitivity of IOUS to small, hypoechoic lesions, reducing the risk to down-stage the disease and enhancing the rate of treatment with curative intent. In conclusion, IOUS accuracy is improved by CE-IOUS with an impact on surgical strategy either for primary than for metastatic tumors. Furthermore, a wider experience with vascular enhancement patterns at CE-IOUS could provide new classification for liver lesions.

Abstract
Techniques to image elasticity parameters (i.e., elastography) have recently become of great interest to researchers. In this paper we use conventional ultrasound elastography and x-ray CT to image radio frequency (RF) ablation sites of excised canine liver enclosed in gelatin. Thermal coagulations of different sizes were produced by applying the RF procedure for various times and end point temperatures. Dimensions, areas and volumes computed from CT and elastography were compared with those on whole mount pathology specimens. Ultrasound elastography exhibited high contrast for the thermal coagulations and performed better than CT. The correlation between pathology and elastography for this sample set of 40 thermal coagulations (r = 0.94 for volume estimation, r = 0.87 for area estimation) is better than the correlation between pathology and CT (r = 0.89 for volume estimation, r = 0.82 for area estimation).
