PCB and PCDD/F in sediments and mussels of the Istanbul strait (Turkey)

Distribution of organochlorine pesticides in sediments and mussels from the Istanbul Strait

This study was conducted to determine the status and trends of organochlorine pesticide (OCP) compounds in the sediment and mussel samples collected along the Istanbul Strait and from the coasts of an island in the Marmara Sea. The total concentrations of OCPs were found in the range of 40-13,852 pg g(-1) dry weight for sediments and 5,195-12,322 pg g(-1) wet weight for mussels. The levels of OCPs in both sediments and mussels were dominated by DDTs and HCHs; β-HCH, 4,4(')-DDD and 4,4(')-DDE were the major pollutants. The degree of sediment pesticide contamination was more severe in the inner part of the strait. OCP concentrations in sediments and mussels were compared with the sediment guideline values and legal limits for human health, respectively. The results showed that OC pesticide contamination in the strait might not pose a serious threat to the health of the marine inhabitants at most of the stations.

PCDD/Fs and dioxin-like PCBs in sediment and biota from the Mondego estuary (Portugal)

The concentrations of 17 polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and furans (PCDD/Fs), and 12 dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (dl-PCBs) were measured in sediment and key species as an initial investigation on PCDD/Fs and dl-PCBs contamination in the Mondego estuary (Portugal). The results demonstrated that the values of the total PCDD/Fs (∑PCDD/Fs) concentrations were considerably lower than those of the sum of dl-PCBs (∑dl-PCBs) in all the studied samples. Regarding the contribution of individual congeners, OCDD was the predominant PCDD/F and the mono-ortho PCB 118 and PCB 105 were the dominant PCBs in the majority of the samples. Our results suggest that PCDD/Fs and PCBs behave quite differently along the aquatic food web: ∑PCDD/Fs concentrations were lower in higher trophic-level organisms with fish presenting a distinct PCDD/Fs congeners profile; on the contrary, the higher ∑dl-PCBs values were found in upper-level biota, although not exclusively, and quite similar dl-PCBs congener profiles were observed in nearly all the studied species.

Spatial distribution and source apportionment of PCBs in sediments around İzmit industrial complexes, Turkey

The spatial distribution, degree of pollution and major sources of PCBs were evaluated in surficial sediments within the heavily urbanized and industrialized İzmit Bay and its main freshwater inputs. ΣPCB concentrations range from 2.90 to 85.4ngg(-1) in marine sediments and from ND to 47.7ngg(-1) in freshwater sediments. Results suggest that high concentrations of ΣPCBs were localized around a chlor-alkali plant and an industry that handles bulk liquid, dry and drummed chemicals, and petroleum products in the Bay. Using a chemical mass balance receptor model (CMB), major sources of PCBs in the region were investigated. The CMB model identified Aroclor 1254 and 1260 to be the major PCB sources in marine sediments and the less chlorinated Aroclor 1248 and 1242 as the major PCB sources in freshwater sediments. The potential sources for the PCBs were briefly discussed in terms of their use in various industrial applications.

Spatial and temporal trends of PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls) in mussel from Galician coast (1998-2008)

PCBs were determined in wild mussel samples collected in several points from Galician Rías (Rías de Ferrol, A Coruña, Muros, Vigo and Arousa), Spain, during the period 1998-2008. The concentration levels of ΣPCBs ranged from 0.62 to 107.5 ng g(-1), w.w. The isomer concentrations in the Mytilus galloprovincialis were in the order hexachlorobiphenyls>pentachlorobiphenyls>tetrachlorbiphenyls>trichlorobiphenyls. CBs 153, 138 and 101 congeners were the most abundant in these samples. Two biological parameters, fat content and condition index (CI), have also been investigated for these mussel samples. Univariate techniques confirm that levels of some compounds, CBs 28, 52, 138, 153, and 180, presented significant relation (p<0.05) with biological parameters. Multivariate techniques of data exploration such as Principal Component Analysis (PCA) showed that spatial trends of PCB levels appeared in the studied samples. Rias de Ferrol and A Coruña presented the highest levels of PCBs and Ría de Arousa the lowest levels of these compounds. In general, temporal trends (linear regressions) showed a decrease of PCB levels along the period 1998-2008.

Ambient air levels and trends of polychlorinated biphenyls at four different sites

In this study, samples were collected in order to determine atmospheric levels of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in four different sites by using a high-volume air sampler (HVAS). Eighty-three congeners of gas and particle- phase PCBs were investigated in air samples. The total (gas + particle) concentrations for Mudanya (coastal), Butal (traffic/urban), the Uludag University Campus (semirural), and Yavuz Selim (residential) were determined as 570, 394, 412, and 316 pg/m(3), respectively. These levels coincide with the values reported for the sites having similar characteristics. In terms of homolog groups, 3-chlorinated biphenyls (3-CBs) and 4-CBs constituted at least 47% of the total PCB concentration. PCBs in all sites were determined mostly in the gas phase, with a percentage from 85 to 95%. Obtained atmospheric PCB data were correlated with meteorological parameters and a significant relationship was obtained between coastal and semirural sites (p < 0.05). With the movements of air transportation and wind rose possible data sources of PCBs were enlightened. Partitioning of gas/particle was examined with available models; significant relationships were determined for coastal and semirural sites especially.
