Evolution of Network Structure and Mechanical Properties in Autonomous-Strengthening Dental Adhesive

The inherent degradation property of most dental resins in the mouth leads to the long-term release of degradation by-products at the adhesive/tooth interface. The by-products increase the virulence of cariogenic bacteria, provoking a degradative positive-feedback loop that leads to physicochemical and mechanical failure. Photoinduced free-radical polymerization and sol‒gel reactions have been coupled to produce a novel autonomous-strengthening adhesive with enhanced hydrolytic stability. This paper investigates the effect of network structure on time-dependent mechanical properties in adhesives with and without autonomous strengthening. Stress relaxation was conducted under 0.2% strain for 8 h followed by 40 h recovery in water. The stress‒time relationship is analyzed by nonlinear least-squares data-fitting. The fitted Prony series predicts the sample’s history under monotonic loading. Results showed that the control failed after the first loading‒unloading‒recovery cycle with permanent deformation. While for the experimental sample, the displacement was almost completely recovered and the Young’s modulus increased significantly after the first test cycle. The experimental polymer exhibited higher degree of conversion, lower leachate, and time-dependent stiffening characteristics. The autonomous-strengthening reaction persists in the aqueous environment leading to a network with enhanced resistance to deformation. The results illustrate a rational approach for tuning the viscoelasticity of durable dental adhesives.

Flexural strength and surface microhardness of materials used for temporary dental disocclusion submitted to thermal cycling: An in vitro study

OBJECTIVE

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of temperature variation on surface microhardness and resistance to flexion of different materials used for making a temporary dental disocclusion.

METHODS

One hundred specimens were made of the following materials (n=20): glass ionomer cement (GIC); compomer (CP); composite resin (CR); Blue colour resin composite for temporary dental disocclusion (BTDD); ultraviolet colour resin composite for temporary dental disocclusion (UVTDD). They were stored in distilled water for 24hours and, subsequently, half of the specimens in each group were subjected to thermal cycling (n=10). All samples were subjected to the microhardness test (HMV-2000) and the flexural strength analysis (INSTRON). The data were submitted to parametric statistical analysis (ANOVA) and Tukey's complementary test with a significance level of 5%. In the mechanical tests, all materials except the GIC showed a statistically significant difference between the groups subjected to thermal cycling and not submitted, and thermal cycling (P<0.05) was responsible for the reduction of the values found, except for GIC.

RESULTS

For microhardness, the highest average was found for BTDD and UVTDD (P≤0.05). As for the resistance, the flexion was found that in the groups not submitted to thermal cycling there was no statistically significant difference for all materials, except for GIC, for the groups with thermal cycling the materials BTDD and UVTDD showed a statistically significant difference from GIC, however, they did not differ statistically from the CP and CR groups.

CONCLUSION

BTDD and UVTDD presented higher average results of surface microhardness and, in the resistance test, the flexion of these materials behaved similarly to the CP and the CR studied. The temperature variation has an effect on the properties of these materials.

Multifunctional monomer acts as co-initiator and crosslinker to provide autonomous strengthening with enhanced hydrolytic stability in dental adhesives

OBJECTIVE

The purpose of this study was to evaluate a new synthesized multifunctional monomer, aminosilane functionalized methacrylate (ASMA), containing polymerizable methacrylate, tertiary amine, and methoxysilane functionalities in dental adhesive formulations, and to investigate the polymerization kinetics, leachates, thermal and mechanical properties of copolymers.

METHODS

Adhesive contained HEMA/BisGMA (45/55, w/w) was used as a control, and mixtures based on HEMA/BisGMA/ASMA at the mass ratio of 45/(55-x)/x were used as experimental adhesive. Adhesives were characterized with regard to water miscibility, photo-polymerization behavior (Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, FTIR), leached co-monomers (high performance liquid chromatography, HPLC), thermal properties (modulated differential scanning calorimeter, MDSC), and mechanical properties (dynamic mechanical analyzer, DMA). Stress relaxation times and the corresponding moduli, obtained from stress relaxation tests, are used in a simulated linear loading case.

RESULTS

As compared to the control, ASMA-containing adhesives showed higher water miscibility, lower viscosity, improved monomer-to-polymer conversion, significantly greater T_g and rubbery modulus. HPLC results indicated a substantial reduction of leached HEMA (up to 85wt%) and BisGMA (up to 55wt%) in ethanol. The simulation reveals that the ASMA-containing adhesive becomes substantially stiffer than the control.

SIGNIFICANCE

ASMA monomer plays multiple roles, i.e. it serves as both a co-initiator and crosslinker while also providing autonomous strengthening and enhanced hydrolytic stability in the adhesive formulations. This multifunctional monomer offers significant promise for improving the durability of the adhesive at the composite/tooth interface.

18-month clinical evaluation of a copper-containing universal adhesive in non-carious cervical lesions: A double-blind, randomized controlled trial

OBJECTIVE

This study aimed to evaluate the addition of copper nanoparticles (CuNp) on the clinical performance of a universal adhesive system used as etch-and-rinse (ER) and self-etch (SE).

METHODS

216 restorations were randomly placed in 36 subjects according to the following groups: ERcu = etch-and-rinse with 0.1% CuNp; ERct = etch-and-rinse without CuNp; SEcu = self-etch with 0.1% CuNp; SEct = self-etch without CuNp. Resin composite was placed incrementally and light-cured. The restorations were evaluated at baseline and 6, 12 and 18 months using the FDI and USPHS criteria. Statistical analyses were performed using appropriate tests (α = 0.05).

RESULTS

The addition of CuNp did not increase the clinical performance (FDI / USPHS) of the universal adhesive tested after 18-month when applied in the ER mode (p > 0.05). The addition of CuNp in SE restorations increased the retention rate significantly and decreased the marginal discrepancies after 18 months (p < 0.05).

CONCLUSION

The clinical performance of universal adhesive was significantly increased when applied in the SE mode with the addition of copper nanoparticles.

CLINICAL RELEVANCE

This is the first study that demonstrates a slight improvement in the clinical performance of universal adhesive systems in non-carious cervical lesions when added CuNp in lower concentration.

Combination of baicalein and ethanol-wet-bonding improves dentin bonding durability

OBJECTIVES

This study aimed to investigate the potential of baicalein combined with ethanol-wet bonding (EWB) in improving dentin bonding durability.

METHODS

Sixty caries-free human third molars were randomly allocated into four groups and pretreated with solutions after sectioning and polishing. The pretreatments were prepared via dissolving baicalein in ethanol at concentrations of 0, 0.01%, 0.05% and 0.1% (w/v). Microtensile bond strength (MTBS) test, failure mode analysis and interfacial nanoleakage evaluation were conducted immediately or after thermocycling or 1 month of collagenase aging. In situ zymography, contact angle, antibacterial activity and bioactivity were comprehensively assessed.

RESULTS

Results demonstrated that the three experimental groups exhibited higher MTBS and lower nanoleakage expression regardless of aging. MMP activity within hybrid layer and Streptococcus. mutans biofilm formation were inhibited in the experimental groups in a dose-dependent manner. Baicalein also reduced reactive oxygen species (ROS) expression in human dental pulp cells and resisted adhesive-induced cytotoxicity. Baicalein exhibited remarkable capabilities at concentrations higher than 0.05% (w/v).

CONCLUSION

Baicalein is a prospective candidate as bioactive dentin bonding agent. Combined with EWB, baicalein may form a functional bonding interface, thereby enhancing dentin bond strength and durability.

SIGNIFICANCE

Joint efforts by baicalein and EWB provides a novel therapeutic strategy for obtaining ideal adhesive-dentin interface and prolonging the longevity of restorations.

Performance of Adhesives and Restorative Materials After Selective Removal of Carious Lesions: Restorative Materials with Anticaries Properties

Selective carious tissue-removal strategies require specific considerations in selection of restorative materials. A tight marginal seal placed over hard dentin and sound enamel is essential. For selective removal of carious tissue with permanent restoration, bioactive materials, such as high-viscosity glass-ionomer cement (HV-GIC) or calcium silicates, may be preferred over caries-affected firm or leathery dentin to improve remineralization. HV-GICs have the best clinical evidence of caries-arresting effect and demonstrate sufficient longevity as long-term provisional restorations that can later be used in open or closed sandwich restorations. As with any material, oral health maintenance remains important for long-term survival of restorations.
