Abstract
Hybrid organic-inorganic material containing Laponite clay and ionic liquids forming cations have been prepared and characterized by FT-Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and thermal analysis. The effect of varying the length of the alkyl side chain and conformations of cations has been investigated by using different ionic liquids based on piperidinium and imidazolium cations. The structure of the N,N-butyl-methyl-piperidinium cation and the assignment of its vibrational spectrum have been further elucidated by quantum chemistry calculations. The X-ray data indicate that the organic cations are intercalated parallel to the layers of the clay. Comparison of Raman spectra of pure ionic liquids with different anions and the resulting solid hybrid materials in which the organic cations have been intercalated into the clay characterizes the local environment experienced by the cations in the hybrid materials. The Raman spectra of hybrid materials suggest that the local environment of all confined cations, in spite of this diversity in properties, resembles the liquid state of ionic liquids with a relatively disordered structure.

Abstract
Homochirality is a property of living systems on Earth. The time, the place, and the way in which it appeared are uncertain. In a prebiotic scenario two situations are of interest: either an initial small bias for handedness of some biomolecules arouse and progressed with life, or an initial slight excess led to the actual complete dominance of the known chiral molecules. A definitive answer can probably never be given, neither from the fields of physics and chemistry nor biology. Some arguments can be advanced to understand if homochirality is necessary for the initiation of a prebiotic homochiral polymer chemistry, if this homochirality is suggesting a unique origin of life, or if a chiral template such as a mineral surface is always required to result in an enantiomeric excess. A general description of the early Earth scenario will be presented in this chapter, followed by a general description of some clays, and their role as substrates to allow the concentration and amplification of some of the building blocks of life.

Abstract
A technique of layer-by-layer (LbL) self-assembly was used to prepare transparent multilayered gas barrier films consisting of graphene oxide (GO)/branched poly(ethylenimine) (BPEI) on a poly(ethylene terephthalate) substrate. The effect of the GO suspension pH on the nanostructure and oxygen barrier properties of the GO/BPEI film was investigated. The oxygen barrier properties of the assemblies were shown to be highly dependent on the pH. It was demonstrated that the film assemblies prepared using a GO suspension with a pH of 3.5 exhibited very dense and ordered structures and delivered very low oxygen transmission rates (the lowest was <0.05 cm(3) m(-2) day(-1)). The assemblies were characterized with ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy and ellipsometry to identify the film growth mechanism, and the result indicated a linear growth behavior. To analyze the nanostructure of the films, atomic force microscopy, transmission electronic microscopy, and grazing incidence wide-angle X-ray diffraction were used.

Abstract
Although advances have been reported to mimic the mechanically excellent structure of natural nacre, larger-scale applications are still limited due to time and energy-intensive preparation pathways. Herein, we demonstrate that simple high-shear homogenization of dispersions containing biobased high molecular weight sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (700 kg/mol, CMC) and natural sodium montmorillonite (MTM), serving as the soft energy-dissipating phase and reinforcing platelets, respectively, can be used to prepare large-area and thick films with well-aligned hard/soft nacre-mimetic mesostructure. During this process, core-shell nanoplatelets with intrinsic hard/soft structure form, which then self-assemble into a layered nanocomposite during water removal. The nanoscale periodicities of the alternating hard/soft layers can be precisely tuned by changing the ratio of CMC to MTM, which allows studying the evolution of mechanical properties as a function of the lamellar nanoscale periodicity and fractions of hard to soft material. Remarkable mechanical stiffness (25 GPa) and strength (320 MPa) can be obtained placing these materials among the top end of nacre-inspired materials reported so far. Mechanical homogenization also allows direct preparation of concentrated, yet homogeneous, gel-like dispersions of high nanoclay content, suited to doctor-blade large-area and thick films with essentially the same properties as films cast from dilute dispersions. In terms of functional properties, we report high-transparency, shape-persistent fire-blocking and the ability to surface-pattern via inkjet printing. Considering the simple, fully scalable, waterborne preparation pathway, and the use of nature-based components, we foresee applications as ecofriendly, bioinspired materials to promote sustainable engineering materials and novel types of functional barrier coatings and substrates.

Abstract
Nanocomposite films of superhydrophobic surface are fabricated from the dispersion of unmodified carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and hydrophobic poly(isobutylene)-amine (PIB-amine). The PIB-amine prepared from the amidation of poly(isobutylene)-succinic anhydride and poly(oxypropylene)-amines is essential for dispersing the originally entangled CNTs into the debundled CNTs as observed by TEM. A robust CNTs/epoxy nanocomposite film with high dimensional stability is made by subsequent curing with epoxy resin. The self-standing film exhibits a superhydrophobic property, with water droplet contact angle > 152° due to the CNTs controlled alignment on the surface forming micrometer-size plateaus, as observed by SEM. The preparation of PIB-amine/CNTs dispersion and subsequently curing into a superhydrophobic CNTs/epoxy film is relatively simple and can potentially be applied to large surface coating.
