Abstract
Amphiphilic surfactants are widely used as templates to synthesize hierarchically structured zeolites due to their multiple functions; however, piloting such new dual-functional templates is limited by their time-consuming nature and high cost. Herein, a simple organic molecule, without a long hydrophobic alkyl chain, was tailored from a gemini-type, poly-quaternary ammonium surfactant, and effectively used as a dual-porogenic template to synthesize hierarchical MTW zeolite. Upon a range of synthesis parameter optimizations, our detailed characterization suggested that the hierarchical MTW zeolite would completely crystallize within 36 hours from the surface to the inside of quasi-spherical particles through in situ consumption of amorphous silicon and aluminum species; much faster than most of the hierarchical MTW zeolites generated by conventional methods. Moreover, the as-prepared hierarchical MTW zeolite exhibited 4 times higher catalytic performance and lifetime of benzene-propene alkylation compared to conventional MTW zeolite, while the introduced crystalline mesopores are of benefit to diffuse reactants, products, and coke depositions. Our strategy broadens the design of new templates in more effective ways to facilely synthesize versatile hierarchical zeolites for diverse applications, especially for those in which macromolecules are involved.

Abstract
Establishing structure-activity relationships in complex, hierarchically structured nanomaterials, such as fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) catalysts, requires characterization with complementary, correlated analysis techniques. An integrated setup has been developed to perform transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and single-molecule fluorescence (SMF) microscopy on such nanostructured samples. Correlated structure-reactivity information was obtained for 100 nm thin, microtomed sections of a single FCC catalyst particle using this novel SMF-TEM high-resolution combination. High reactivity in a thiophene oligomerization probe reaction correlated well with TEM-derived zeolite locations, while matrix components, such as clay and amorphous binder material, were found not to display activity. Differences in fluorescence intensity were also observed within and between distinct zeolite aggregate domains, indicating that not all zeolite domains are equally active.

Abstract
Fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) catalysts play a central role in the chemical conversion of crude oil fractions. Using scanning transmission X-ray microscopy (STXM) we investigate the chemistry of one fresh and two industrially deactivated (ECAT) FCC catalysts at the single zeolite domain level. Spectro-microscopic data at the Fe L3 , La M5 , and Al K X-ray absorption edges reveal differing levels of deposited Fe on the ECAT catalysts corresponding with an overall loss in tetrahedral Al within the zeolite domains. Using La as a localization marker, we have developed a novel methodology to map the changing Al distribution of single zeolite domains within real-life FCC catalysts. It was found that significant changes in the zeolite domain size distributions as well as the loss of Al from the zeolite framework occur. Furthermore, inter- and intraparticle heterogeneities in the dealumination process were observed, revealing the complex interplay between metal-mediated pore accessibility loss and zeolite dealumination.

Abstract
This review addresses the most relevant aspects of vibrational spectroscopies (IR, Raman and INS) applied to zeolites and zeotype materials. Surface Brønsted and Lewis acidity and surface basicity are treated in detail. The role of probe molecules and the relevance of tuning both the proton affinity and the steric hindrance of the probe to fully understand and map the complex site population present inside microporous materials are critically discussed. A detailed description of the methods needed to precisely determine the IR absorption coefficients is given, making IR a quantitative technique. The thermodynamic parameters of the adsorption process that can be extracted from a variable-temperature IR study are described. Finally, cutting-edge space- and time-resolved experiments are reviewed. All aspects are discussed by reporting relevant examples. When available, the theoretical literature related to the reviewed experimental results is reported to support the interpretation of the vibrational spectra on an atomic level.

Abstract
Catalytic biomass pyrolysis vapor upgrading presently seems to be a techno-economical process toward production of fuel-like components. However, selection of stable and productive catalyst(s) to yield desirable chemicals with low coke formation is a great challenge.

Abstract
This chapter provides an elementary introduction to X‐ray and neutron scattering theory, written with a didactic perspective. At the beginning, the scattering process is introduced in a general way and then a differentiation between crystalline samples and amorphous samples is made, leading to the Bragg equation or to the Debye equation and to the Pair Distribution Function (PDF) approach, respectively. Advantages and disadvantages of the use of X‐rays or neutrons for scattering experiments are underlined. The basics of Extended X‐ray Absorption Fine Structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy are also reported. Starting from these basics, five examples have been selected from the recent literature where the concepts described in the first didactic part have been applied to the understanding of the structure of different MOFs materials.
