Abstract
The silver hexafluoroantimonate/ N-bromosuccinimide (NBS)-catalyzed synthesis of α-alkylated aryl ketones with a tertiary carbon center from internal alkynes and benzyl alcohols is reported. This reaction proceeds via the etherification of benzyl alcohols with an in situ generated benzyl bromide, formed by the reaction of benzyl alcohol with a catalytic amount of NBS and AgSbF6. Ag-catalyzed C-O cleavage of the ether leads to a tolyl radical, which undergoes addition to the alkyne, ultimately leading to the α-alkylated aryl ketone products.

Abstract
The construction of arene-fused cyclic β-ketoesters from 2-iodoaryl esters and 1,1-cyclopropane diesters is detailed. The synthetic method takes advantage of a CuI·SMe2-mediated homoconjugate addition followed by a decarboxylative Dieckmann cyclization to afford valuable polycyclic building blocks. Various iodoaryl esters and 1,1-cyclopropane diesters were evaluated, and the limitations of both reactions are discussed. Several mechanistic probes are detailed and synthetic applications are described.

Abstract
A hydrogen borrowing reaction employing secondary alcohols and Ph* (Me5C6) ketones to give β-branched carbonyl products is described (21 examples). This new C-C bond forming process requires low loadings of [Cp*IrCl2]2, relatively low temperatures, and up to 2.0 equiv of the secondary alcohol. Substrate-induced diastereoselectivity was observed, and this represents the first example of a diastereoselective enolate hydrogen borrowing alkylation. By utilizing the Ph* group, the β-branched products could be straightforwardly cleaved to the corresponding esters or amides using a retro-Friedel-Crafts reaction. Finally, this protocol was applied to the synthesis of fragrance compound (±)-3-methyl-5-phenylpentanol.

Abstract
The borrowing hydrogen or hydrogen autotransfer methodology is an elegant and sustainable or green concept to construct carbon-carbon bonds. In this concept, alcohols, which can be obtained from barely used and indigestible biomass, such as lignocellulose, are employed as alkylating reagents. An especially challenging alkylation is that of unactivated esters and amides. Only noble metal catalysts based on iridium and ruthenium have been used to accomplish these reactions. Herein, we report on the first base metal-catalyzed α-alkylation of unactivated amides and esters by alcohols. Cobalt complexes stabilized with pincer ligands, recently developed in our laboratory, catalyze these reactions very efficiently. The precatalysts can be synthesized easily from commercially available starting materials on a multigram scale and are self-activating under the basic reaction conditions. This Co catalyst class is also able to mediate alkylation reactions of both esters and amides. In addition, we apply the methodology to synthesize ketones and to convert alcohols into aldehydes elongated by two carbon atoms.

Abstract
A powerful strategy for the regioselective bidirectional synthesis of unsymmetrically substituted ketones is described, relying on the fact that the exchange of a xanthate is much faster than the radical addition to an unactivated alkene. The use of an alkene as the formal "alkylating" agent associated with the tolerance for numerous functional groups and the mildness of the experimental conditions removes many of the problems associated with the classical ionic and transition-metal-based approaches.
