Multiple length and time scales of dynamic heterogeneities in model glass-forming liquids: A systematic analysis of multi-point and multi-time correlations

Spatiotemporal heterogeneity of local free volumes in highly supercooled liquid

We discuss the spatiotemporal behavior of local density and its relation to dynamical heterogeneity in a highly supercooled liquid by using molecular dynamics simulations of a binary mixture with different particle sizes in two dimensions. To trace voids heterogeneously existing with lower local densities, which move along with the structural relaxation, we employ the minimum local density for each particle in a time window whose width is set along with the structural relaxation time. Particles subject to free volumes correspond well to the configuration rearranging region of dynamical heterogeneity. While the correlation length for dynamical heterogeneity grows with temperature decrease, no growth in the correlation length of heterogeneity in the minimum local density distribution takes place. A comparison of these results with those of normal mode analysis reveals that superpositions of lower-frequency soft modes extending over the free volumes exhibit spatial correlation with the broken bonds. This observation suggests a possibility that long-ranged vibration modes facilitate the interactions between fragile regions represented by free volumes, to induce dynamical correlations at a large scale.

Dynamic length scales in glass-forming liquids: an inhomogeneous molecular dynamics simulation approach

In this work, we numerically investigate a new method for the characterization of growing length scales associated with spatially heterogeneous dynamics of glass-forming liquids. This approach, motivated by the formulation of the inhomogeneous mode-coupling theory (IMCT) [Biroli, G.; et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 2006 97, 195701], utilizes inhomogeneous molecular dynamics simulations in which the system is perturbed by a spatially modulated external potential. We show that the response of the two-point correlation function to the external field allows one to probe dynamic correlations. We examine the critical properties shown by this function, in particular, the associated dynamic correlation length, that is found to be comparable to the one extracted from standardly employed four-point correlation functions. Our numerical results are in qualitative agreement with IMCT predictions but suggest that one has to take into account fluctuations not included in this mean-field approach to reach quantitative agreement. Advantages of our approach over the more conventional one based on four-point correlation functions are discussed.

Rheology across the zero-temperature jamming transition

Many soft-matter systems show a transition between fluidlike and mechanically solidlike states when the volume fraction of the material, e.g., particles, drops, or bubbles is increased. Using an emulsion as a model system with a precisely controllable volume fraction, we show that the entire mechanical behavior in the vicinity of the jamming point can be understood if the mechanical transition is assumed to be analogous to a phase transition. We find power-law scalings in the distance to the jamming point, in which the parameters and exponents connect the behavior above and below jamming. We propose a simple two-state model with heterogeneous dynamics to describe the transition between jammed and mobile states. The model reproduces the steady-state and creep rheology and relates the power-law exponents to diverging microscopic time scales.

Decorrelation of the static and dynamic length scales in hard-sphere glass formers

We show that, in the equilibrium phase of glass-forming hard-sphere fluids in three dimensions, the static length scales tentatively associated with the dynamical slowdown and the dynamical length characterizing spatial heterogeneities in the dynamics unambiguously decorrelate. The former grow at a much slower rate than the latter when density increases. This observation is valid for the dynamical range that is accessible to computer simulations, which roughly corresponds to that accessible in colloidal experiments. We also find that, in this same range, no one-to-one correspondence between relaxation time and point-to-set correlation length exists. These results point to the coexistence of several relaxation mechanisms in the dynamically accessible regime of three-dimensional hard-sphere glass formers.
