Simulation of charged systems in heterogeneous dielectric media via a true energy functional

Free-energy functionals of the electrostatic potential for Poisson-Boltzmann theory

In simulating charged systems, it is often useful to treat some ionic components of the system at the mean-field level and solve the Poisson-Boltzmann (PB) equation to get their respective density profiles. The numerically intensive task of solving the PB equation at each step of the simulation can be bypassed using variational methods that treat the electrostatic potential as a dynamic variable. But such approaches require the access to a true free-energy functional: a functional that not only provides the correct solution of the PB equation upon extremization, but also evaluates to the true free energy of the system at its minimum. Moreover, the numerical efficiency of such procedures is further enhanced if the free-energy functional is local and is expressed in terms of the electrostatic potential. Existing PB functionals of the electrostatic potential, while possessing the local structure, are not free-energy functionals. We present a variational formulation with a local free-energy functional of the potential. In addition, we also construct a nonlocal free-energy functional of the electrostatic potential. These functionals are suited for employment in simulation schemes based on the ideas of dynamical optimization.

Tunable soft structure in charged fluids confined by dielectric interfaces

Fluids of charged particles act as the supporting medium for chemical reactions and physical, dynamical, and biological processes. The local structure in an electrolytic background is deformed by micro- and nanoscopic polarizable objects. Vice versa, the forces between the objects are regulated by the cohesive properties of the background. We study here the range and strength of these forces and the microscopic origin from which they emerge. We find the forces to be sensitively dependent on the material properties of the charged fluid and the immersed solutes. The induced interactions can be varied over decades, offering high tunability and aided by accurate theory, control in experiments and applications. To distinguish correlational effects from simple ionic screening, we describe electrolyte-induced forces between neutral objects. The interplay of thermal motion, short-range repulsions, and electrostatic forces is responsible for a soft structure in the fluid. This structure changes near polarizable interfaces and causes diverse attractions between confining walls that seem well-exploited by microbiological systems. For parameters that correspond to monovalent electrolytes in biologically and technologically relevant aqueous environments, we find induced forces between nanoscopic areas of the order of piconewtons over a few nanometers.

Electrostatic interaction in the presence of dielectric interfaces and polarization-induced like-charge attraction

Electrostatic polarization is important in many nano- and micro-scale physical systems such as colloidal suspensions, biopolymers, and nanomaterials assembly. The calculation of polarization potential requires an efficient algorithm for solving 3D Poisson's equation. We have developed a useful image charge method to rapid evaluation of the Green's function of the Poisson's equation in the presence of spherical dielectric discontinuities. This paper presents an extensive study of this method by giving a convergence analysis and developing a coarse-graining algorithm. The use of the coarse graining could reduce the number of image charges to around a dozen, by 1-2 orders of magnitude. We use the algorithm to investigate the interaction force between likely charged spheres in different dielectric environments. We find the size and charge asymmetry leads to an attraction between like charges, in agreement with existing results. Furthermore, we study three-body interactions and find, in the presence of an external interface, that the interaction force depends on the curvature of the interface and performs a nonmonotonic electrostatic force.
