Large Scale Synthesis of Shuttle like CuO Nanocrystals by Microwave Irradiation

Nanocrystalline CuO with shuttle-morphology has been prepared conventionally by a microwave irradiation heating technique from an aqueous system in the presence of Cu(CH3COO)2• H2O and NaOH at room temperature. The X-ray powder diffraction pattern indicates that the product is indicated that the product was pure monoclinic phase of CuO. Further characterized by transmission electron microscopy, selected area electron diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Raman spectra, the component of the products were confirmed.

Optical absorption and EPR studies on tenorite mineral

Optical absorption and EPR studies of the mineral tenorite, a cupric oxide which originated from Mexico and contains 54.40 wt% of CuO. EPR spectral results indicate two Cu(II) closely interacting ions to give a d(2) type structure. The calculated spin Hamiltonian at room temperature and liquid nitrogen temperature is g=2.160 and D=125 G. The intensity of resonance line is not the same in low and high field regions. The optical absorption spectrum is due to Cu(II) in which three sets of energies indicating Cu(II) in two independent tetragonal C(4v) symmetry, in addition to d(2) structure of octahedral coordination. The octahedral and tetragonal field parameters are compared with those reported for several other copper containing minerals.

Size effect on the electron-phonon coupling in CuO nanocrystals

CuO is the prototype compound of cuprate superconductors, so understanding its electronic structures will facilitate the study of the pairing mechanism and miscellaneous states of high-temperature superconductors. We prepared uniform CuO nanocrystals (7-100 nm) and studied their size-dependent Raman scattering spectra. The relative variation between the two-phonon scattering band (2B(g)) and the one-phonon band (B(g)) indicates a decreasing electron-phonon coupling with reducing size, which unveils the dominant Fröhlich electron-phonon coupling, as indicated by Devreese, but not the small polaron in CuO. Moreover, the anomalous enhancement of the multi-phonon band at a critical size and 1D structure at room temperature is attributable to an enhanced electron-phonon coupling accompanied by phonon-plasmon coupling, i.e., the 'plasphon' proposed by Alexandrov et al in 1981.

Fabrication of CuO Pricky Microspheres with Tunable Size by a Simple Solution Route

A simple aqueous solution route was introduced for the fabrication of CuO pricky microspheres (CPMs) using CuCl(2) x 2H(2)O, Na(2)(C(4)H(4)O(6)) x 3H(2)O and NaOH as starting materials. The CPMs were composed of compressed nanothorns exhibiting tapering feature with tip size of less than 10 nm, and the size of CPMs could be tuned from 100-200 nm to 4-6 microm. The effects of the molar ratios of tartrate anions and NaOH to Cu(2+) cations, reagent concentration, and reaction temperature on the products were investigated, showing that the morphology of CPMs was determined by the molar ratio of tartrate to Cu(2+) cations and the size was greatly affected by reagent concentration and the molar ratio of NaOH to Cu(2+) cations in the precursor solution. The fabrication of CPMs went through rapid nucleation of Cu(OH)(2), aggregation and in situ dehydration of Cu(OH)(2), oriented-aggregation-based growth, and normal crystal growth of CuO nanothorns. The nucleation and crystal growth were successfully separated by controlled releasing of Cu(2+) and OH(-) ions through the reversible reaction of Cu(2+) cations, OH(-), and C(4)H(4)O(6)(2-) anions.

Mott insulator to high Tc superconductor via pressure: resonating valence bond theory and prediction of new systems

Mott insulator superconductor transition, via pressure and no external doping, is studied in orbitally nondegenerate spin-1 / 2 systems. It is presented as another resonating valence bond route to high T(c) superconductivity. We propose a "strong coupling" hypothesis that views long range Coulomb force driven first order Mott transition as a self-doping process that also preserves superexchange on the metal side. We present a two-species t-J model where conserved N0 doubly occupied (e(-)) sites and N0 empty sites (e(+)) hop in the background of N-2N(0) singly occupied (neutral) sites in a lattice of N sites. An equivalence to the regular t-J model is made. Some old and new systems are predicted to be candidates for pressure-induced high T(c) superconductivity.
