Attosecond pulse trains generated using two color laser fields

Spectral signature of short attosecond pulse trains

We report experimental measurements of high-order harmonic spectra generated in Ar using a carrier-envelope-offset (CEO) stabilized 12 fs, 800 nm laser field and a fraction (less than 10%) of its second harmonic. Additional spectral peaks are observed between the harmonic peaks, which are due to interferences between multiple pulses in the train. The position of these peaks varies with the CEO and their number is directly related to the number of pulses in the train. An analytical model, as well as numerical simulations, support our interpretation.

Ideal waveform to generate the maximum possible electron recollision energy for any given oscillation period

We present the perfect waveform which, during a strong field interaction, generates the maximum possible electron recollision energy for any given oscillation period, over 3 times as high as that for a pure sinusoidal wave. This ideal waveform has the form of a linear ramp with a dc offset. A genetic algorithm was employed to find an optimized practically achievable waveform composed of a longer wavelength field, to provide the offset, in addition to higher frequency components. This second waveform is found to be capable of generating electron recollision energies as high as those for the perfect waveform while retaining the high recollision amplitudes of a pure sinusoidal wave. Calculations of high harmonic generation demonstrate this enhancement, by increasing the cutoff energy by a factor of 2.5 while maintaining the harmonic yield, providing an enhanced tool for attosecond science.

Quantum path selection in high-harmonic generation by a phase-locked two-color field

We report the results of our studies on the selection of the quantum path in high-harmonic generation (HHG) with a relative-phase-locked two-color laser field. It is shown that by tuning the relative phase between fundamental and second-harmonic fields, The timing of tunnel ionization and subsequent electron trajectories on the sub-cycle time scale can be controlled. We have clearly observed a phase-dependent two-step feature in the harmonic spectra that can be attributed to the selection of two major trajectories in the two-color field HHG.

Multi-cycle laser-driven broadband supercontinuum with a modulated polarization gating

We propose a method to generate broadband supercontinuum with a modulated polarization gating in the multi-cycle regime. The polarization gating at 1600 nm is employed to intensify the ellipticity dependence of high harmonic signal, and the adding second harmonic (SH) field is used for modulating ionization ratio between the driving field half-cycles. It is shown that longer driving pulses (6 optical cycles, 32.4 fs) can be applied to confine the efficient recollision of electron wave packet to half an optical cycle. The produced bandwidth of the extreme ultraviolet (XUV) supercontinuum is about 280 eV, corresponding to a fourier-transform-limited pulse of 10 as. In addition, an attosecond pulse of about 100 as with tunable wavelength can be straightforwardly obtained just by filtering different range of the spectrum.

Double optical gating of high-order harmonic generation with carrier-envelope phase stabilized lasers

We demonstrated a novel optical switch to control the high-order harmonic generation process so that single attosecond pulses can be generated with multiple-cycle pulses. The technique combines two powerful optical gating methods: polarization gating and two-color gating. An extreme ultraviolet supercontinuum supporting 130 as was generated with neon gas using 9 fs laser pulses. We discovered a unique dependence of the harmonic spectra on the carrier-envelope phase of the laser fields, which repeats every 2 pi radians.

Coherent electron scattering captured by an attosecond quantum stroboscope

We demonstrate a quantum stroboscope based on a sequence of identical attosecond pulses that are used to release electrons into a strong infrared (IR) laser field exactly once per laser cycle. The resulting electron momentum distributions are recorded as a function of time delay between the IR laser and the attosecond pulse train using a velocity map imaging spectrometer. Because our train of attosecond pulses creates a train of identical electron wave packets, a single ionization event can be studied stroboscopically. This technique has enabled us to image the coherent electron scattering that takes place when the IR field is sufficiently strong to reverse the initial direction of the electron motion causing it to rescatter from its parent ion.

Attosecond Control and Measurement: Lightwave Electronics

Electrons emit light, carry electric current, and bind atoms together to form molecules. Insight into and control of their atomic-scale motion are the key to understanding the functioning of biological systems, developing efficient sources of x-ray light, and speeding up electronics. Capturing and steering this electron motion require attosecond resolution and control, respectively (1 attosecond = 10(-18) seconds). A recent revolution in technology has afforded these capabilities: Controlled light waves can steer electrons inside and around atoms, marking the birth of lightwave electronics. Isolated attosecond pulses, well reproduced and fully characterized, demonstrate the power of the new technology. Controlled few-cycle light waves and synchronized attosecond pulses constitute its key tools. We review the current state of lightwave electronics and highlight some future directions.

Generation of an extreme ultraviolet supercontinuum in a two-color laser field

We theoretically investigate the high-order harmonic generation in a helium atom with a two-color optical field synthesized by an intense 6 fs pulse at 800 nm and a relatively weak 21.3 fs pulse at 400 nm. When the frequency-doubled pulse is properly time shifted with respect to the fundamental pulse, an ultrabroad extreme ultraviolet supercontinuum spectrum with a 148 eV spectral width can be generated which directly creates an isolated 65 as pulse even without phase compensation. We explain this extraordinary phenomenon by analyzing maximum electron kinetic energies at different return times.
