False Data Injection Attack for Cyber-Physical Systems With Resource Constraint

Cyber-security is of the fundamental importance for cyber-physical systems (CPSs), since CPSs are vulnerable to cyber attack. In order to make the defensive measures better, one needs to understand the behavior from the view of an attacker. In this paper, the problem of false data injection attack on remote state estimation with resource constraints is studied in two cases, where the first case is that the attacker adds a Gaussian noise to the innovation, while the other is that the attacker employs a Gaussian noise to replace the innovation. In addition, the attacker is assumed to has a resource constraint, i.e., he/she cannot attack all the sensors, at the same time should decide which sensors to attack. By using the matrix theory, the optimal attack strategy problem, which aims to maximize the trace of the remote estimation error covariance, is converted into a convex optimization problem that can be solved. Thus, an optimal attack strategy is given to illustrate which sensors should be attacked. An example is given to show the effectiveness of the theoretical results.

Resilient Event-Triggered Controller Synthesis of Networked Control Systems Under Periodic DoS Jamming Attacks

In this paper, the event-based controller synthesis problem for networked control systems under the resilient event-triggering communication scheme (RETCS) and periodic denial-of-service (DoS) jamming attacks is studied. First, a new periodic RETCS is designed under the assumption that the DoS attacks imposed by power-constrained pulsewidth-modulated jammers are partially identified, that is, the period of the jammer and a uniform lower bound on the jammer's sleeping periods are known. Second, a new state error-dependent switched system model is constructed, including the impacts of the RETCS and DoS attacks. According to this new model, the exponential stability criteria are derived by using the piecewise Lyapunov functional. In these criteria, the relationship among DoS parameters, the triggering parameters, the sampling period, and the decay rate is quantitatively characterized. Then, a criterion is also proposed to obtain the explicit expressions of the triggering parameter and event-based state feedback controller gain simultaneously. Finally, the obtained theoretical results are verified by a satellite yaw-angles control system.

A Sparse Neural Network Based Control Structure Optimization Game under DoS Attacks for DES Frequency Regulation of Power Grid

With the rapid growth of distributed energy sources, power grid has become a flexible and complex networked control system. However, it increases the chances of being a denial-of-service attack, which degrades the performance of the power grid, even causing cascading failures. To mitigate negative effects from denial-of-service attack and enhance the reliability of the power grid, we propose a networked control system structure based optimization scheme that is derived from a Stackelberg game model for the frequency regulation of a power grid with distributed energy sources. In the proposed game model, both denial-of-service attacker and control system designer as a defender are considered without using any analytical model. For defenders, we propose a sparse neural network based DES control and system structure design scheme. The neural network is used to approximate the desired control output and reinforce signals for the improvements of short- and long-term performance. It also introduces the sparse regulation of column grouping in the neural network learning process to explore the structure of control system that involves the placement of sensor, distributed energy sources actuator, and communication topology. For denial-of-service attackers, the related attack constraints and attack rewards are established. The solution of game equilibrium is considered as an optimal solution for both denial-of-service attack strategy and control structure. An offline optimization algorithm is proposed to solve the game equilibrium. The effectiveness of proposed scheme is verified by two cases, which illustrate the optimal solutions of both control structure and denial-of-service attack strategy.

An Overview on Denial-of-Service Attacks in Control Systems: Attack Models and Security Analyses

In this paper, we provide an overview of recent research efforts on networked control systems under denial-of-service attacks. Our goal is to discuss the utility of different attack modeling and analysis techniques proposed in the literature for addressing feedback control, state estimation, and multi-agent consensus problems in the face of jamming attacks in wireless channels and malicious packet drops in multi-hop networks. We discuss several modeling approaches that are employed for capturing the uncertainty in denial-of-service attack strategies. We give an outlook on deterministic constraint-based modeling ideas, game-theoretic and optimization-based techniques and probabilistic modeling approaches. A special emphasis is placed on tail-probability based failure models, which have been recently used for describing jamming attacks that affect signal to interference-plus-noise ratios of wireless channels as well as transmission failures on multi-hop networks due to packet-dropping attacks and non-malicious issues. We explain the use of attack models in the security analysis of networked systems. In addition to the modeling and analysis problems, a discussion is provided also on the recent developments concerning the design of attack-resilient control and communication protocols.
