Abstract
A review of photoinduced charge separation of organic molecules in microporous and mesoporous materials is presented. In particular, the photoionization of N-alkylphenothiazine (PCn), N,N,N′,N′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB), and porphyrin in microporous materials, such as zeolites, aluminophosphates (AlPOs), silicoaluminophosphates (SAPOs), and mesoporous materials, such as MCM-41, MCM-48, and SBA-15, is discussed.

Abstract
Copper ion-exchanged montmorillonite clays, which had been prepared by ion exchange in an aqueous solution of CuCl(2) at a temperature above 323 K, exhibited the characteristic IR band in the region 3360-3310 cm(-1). No such bands were observed for the samples prepared by using different ion-exchange solutions and at different temperatures. From the spectroscopic observations, it was revealed that the ion-exchanged copper ions (Cu(2+)) are in the form of dimerized species by bridging two hydroxyls, [Cu(2+) <(OH(-)(2) > Cu(2+)], in montmorillonite.

Abstract
Noncarbonaceous materials or mineral oxides (silica gel, alumina, molecular sieves, zeolites, and montmorillonite) were modified with various functional groups such as amine, amide, thiol, urea, and active additives such as elemental sulfur, sodium sulfide, and sodium polysulfide to examine their potential as sorbents for the removal of elemental mercury (Hg(0)) vapor at coal-fired utility power plants. A number of sorbent candidates such as amine- silica gel, urea- silica gel, thiol- silica gel, amide-silica gel, sulfur-alumina, sulfur-molecular sieve, sulfur-montmorillonite, sodium sulfide-montmorillonite, and sodium polysulfide-montmorillonite, were synthesized and tested in a lab-scale fixed-bed system under an argon flow for screening purposes at 70 degrees C and/or 140 degrees C. Several functionalized silica materials reported in previous studies to effectively control heavy metals in the aqueous phase showed insignificant adsorption capacities for Hg(0) control in the gas phase, suggesting that mercury removal mechanisms in both phases are different. Among elemental sulfur-, sodium sulfide-, and sodium polysulfide-impregnated inorganic samples, sodium polysulfide-impregnated montmorillonite K 10 showed a moderate adsorption capacity at 70 degrees C, which can be used for sorbent injection prior to the wet FGD system.

Abstract
A method for construction of biosensors with membranous cytochrome P450 isoenzymes was developed based on clay/detergent/protein mixed films. Thin films of sodium montmorillonite colloid with incorporated cytochrome P450 2B4 (CYP2B4) with nonionic detergent were prepared on glassy carbon electrodes. The modified electrodes were electrochemically characterized, and bioelectrocatalytic reactions were followed. CYP2B4 can be reduced fast on clay-modified glassy carbon electrodes in the presence of the nonionic detergent Tween 80. In anaerobic solutions, reversible oxidation and reduction is obtained with a formal potential between -0.292 and -0.305 V vs Ag/AgCl 1 M KCl depending on the preparation of the biosensor. In air-saturated solution, bioelectrocatalytic reduction currents can be obtained with the CYP2B4-modified electrode on addition of typical substrates such as aminopyrine and benzphetamine. This reaction was suppressed when methyrapone, an inhibitor of P450 reactions, was present. Measurement of product formation also indicates the bioelectrocatalysis by CYP2B4.

Abstract
We describe the role of formamide, a product of the hydrolysis of hydrogen cyanide, as precursor of several components of nucleic acids under prebiotic conditions. When formamide is heated in the presence of montmorillonites, the efficient one-pot synthesis of purine, adenine, cytosine, and uracil is obtained. Along with these nucleobases, several components of the inosine pathway are obtained: 5-aminoimidazole-4-carboxamide, 5-formamidoimidazole-4-carboxamide and hypoxanthine. This almost complete catalogue of nucleic acid precursors is accompanied by N(9)-formylpurine, which, containing a masked glycosidic bond in its formyl moiety, is a plausible precursor of purine acyclonucleosides. In addition, montmorillonites differentially affect the rate of degradation of nucleobases when embedded in 2'-deoxyoligonucleotides; namely, montmorillonites protect adenine and guanine from the degradative action of formamide, while thymine degradation is enhanced. The oligonucleotide backbone reactivity to formamide is also affected; this shows that the interaction with montmorillonites modifies the rate of abstraction of the Halpha and Hbeta protons on the sugar moieties.

Abstract
The mode of binding of copper(II) mixed ligand complexes of phen/bpy and Knoevenagel condensate of curcumin (4-salicylidene-1,7-bis(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)-1,6-heptadiene-3,5-dione) and 4-X-anilines with herring sperm DNA has been investigated using spectral and electrochemical techniques in Tris-HCl buffer pH 7.1. On titration with DNA, usual hypochromism and unusual (large) red shift (30-35 nm) for some of these complexes were observed in their absorption spectra of intense intraligand (IL) pi-pi* transition around 420 nm. Variations in the absorbance due to their interaction with DNA on time scale were also investigated, under fixed concentrations of complex and DNA. On interaction with DNA, the quasi-reversible CuII/I redox couple slightly improves its reversibility with considerable decrease in current intensity. The intercalation of these copper complexes into the DNA base pairs was also investigated by gel retardation assay method. All the experimental results indicate that the phen mixed copper(II) complexes intercalate more effectively into the DNA base pairs than their bpy counterparts. Significant differences in the redox behavior of these copper(II) complexes under electrochemically modified GC electrodes with Nafion and K10 Montmorillonite clay have also been investigated and discussed.

Abstract
Montmorillonite-enwrapped copper and scandium catalysts (Cu(2+)- and Sc(3+)-monts) were easily prepared by treating Na(+)-mont with the aqueous solution of the copper nitrate and scandium triflate, respectively. The resulting Cu(2+)- and Sc(3+)-monts showed outstanding catalytic activities for a variety of carbon-carbon bond-forming reactions, such as the Michael reaction, the Sakurai-Hosomi allylation, and the Diels-Alder reaction, under solvent-free or aqueous conditions. The remarkable activity of the mont catalysts is attributable to the negatively charged silicate layers that are capable of stabilizing metal cations. Furthermore, these catalysts were reusable without any appreciable loss in activity and selectivity. The Cu(2+)-mont-catalyzed Michael reaction proceeds via a ternary complex in which both the 1,3-dicarbonyl compound and the enone are coordinated to a Lewis acid Cu(2+) center.
