Abstract
In humans, exercise-induced plasma volume (PV) expansion is typically associated with an increase in plasma albumin content, due in part to an increase in hepatic albumin synthesis. We tested the ability of a 12-day high-intensity intermittent exercise protocol to induce an increase in PV in rodents. Since albumin synthesis is transcriptionally regulated, we tested the hypothesis that exercise training would induce an increase in hepatic albumin gene expression. Fifty adult male Sprague-Dawley rats weighing between 245 and 350 g were randomly assigned to one of five groups: cage control (CC), sham exercise (sham), continuous moderate-intensity exercise training (MI), high-intensity intermittent exercise training (HI), or a single day of HI training (1-HI). Twenty-four hours after the last training session, rats were anesthetized. PV was determined, and the liver was removed, flash frozen, and stored for later analysis. Citrate synthase (CS) activity of the red quadriceps muscle, a marker of aerobic adaptation, increased with training (MI and HI) and in response to 1-HI (P < 0.05). We did not see a significant exercise-induced PV expansion as PV averaged 23.6 +/- 2.7 ml/kg body wt in the CC group and 26.6 +/- 1.3 ml/kg body wt in the HI group (P > 0.05). However, hepatic albumin mRNA expression, as determined by real-time PCR, increased 2.9 +/- 0.4- and 4.1 +/- 0.4-fold after MI and HI, respectively, compared with CC. A single bout of HI (1-HI) did not alter hepatic albumin mRNA expression. These data demonstrate an increase in both CS activity and hepatic albumin gene expression with 12 days of aerobic exercise training in the rodent with a rapid (within 24 h) adaptation in the skeletal muscle to high-intensity intermittent exercise.

Abstract
We examined whether protein-carbohydrate (CHO) supplementation immediately after exercise each day during aerobic training facilitated plasma volume (PV) expansion and thermoregulatory and cardiovascular adaptations in older men. Fourteen moderately active older men [68 +/- 5 (SD) yr] were divided into two groups so as to have no significant differences in anthropometric measures, PV, and peak oxygen consumption rate (Vo(2peak)). Each group was provided with a mixture of protein and CHO (3.2 kcal, 0.18 g protein/kg body wt, Pro-CHO, n = 7) or a non-protein and low-calorie placebo (0.5 kcal, 0 g protein/kg body wt, CNT, n = 7) immediately after cycling exercise (60-75% Vo(2peak), 60 min/day, 3 days/wk) each day for 8 wk at approximately 19 degrees C ambient temperature (T(a)) and approximately 43% relative humidity (RH). Before and after training, we measured PV, cardiac stroke volume (SV), and esophageal temperature (T(es)) during 20-min exercise at 60% of pretraining Vo(2peak) at 30 degrees C T(a) and 50% RH. Moreover, we determined the sensitivity of the chest sweat rate (DeltaSR/DeltaT(es)) and forearm vascular conductance (DeltaFVC/DeltaT(es)) in response to increased T(es) during exercise. After training, PV increased by approximately 6% in Pro-CHO (P < 0.001), with an approximately 10% increase in SV during exercise (P < 0.001), but not in CNT (P > 0.07). DeltaFVC/DeltaT(es) increased by 80% and DeltaSR/DeltaT(es) by 18% in Pro-CHO (both P < 0.01) but not in CNT (P > 0.07). Moreover, we found a significant interactive effect of group x training on PV, SV, and DeltaFVC/DeltaT(es) (all P < 0.02) but with no significant effect of group (P > 0.4), suggesting that the supplement enhanced these responses to aerobic training. Thus postexercise protein-CHO supplementation during training caused PV expansion and facilitated thermoregulatory and cardiovascular adaptations, possibly providing a new training regimen for older men.

Abstract
This study examined whether increased plasma volume (PV) and albumin content (Alb(cont)) in plasma for 23 h after exercise were attenuated in older subjects compared with in young adult subjects, and if this attenuation abated by supplementation with protein and carbohydrate (CHO) immediately after exercise. Eight moderately active older (approximately 68 yr) and 8 young (approximately 21 yr) men performed two trials: control (CNT) and Pro-CHO in which subjects consumed placebo (0.5 kcal, 0 g protein, 0.5 mg Na(+) in 3.2 ml total fluid volume/kg body wt) or protein and CHO mixture (3.2 kcal, 0.18 g protein, 0.5 mg Na(+) in 3.2 ml total fluid volume/kg body wt) supplementations, respectively, immediately after high-intensity interval exercise for 72 min [8 sets of 4 min at 70-80% peak oxygen consumption rate (Vo(2peak)) intermitted by 5 min at 20% Vo(2peak)]. PV, Alb(cont), and plasma globulin content (Glb(cont)) were measured before exercise, at the end of exercise, every hour from the 1st to the 5th hour after exercise, and at the 23rd hour after exercise. From 12 h before the start to the end of experiment, food intake was controlled to the age-matched recommended dietary allowances. We found that during the first 4 h after exercise in CNT, Alb(cont) recovered less in the older than the young group by approximately 0.04 g/kg (P < 0.05), while it generally recovered more with Pro-CHO than CNT by approximately 0.09 and approximately 0.04 g/kg in the young and older group, respectively, accompanied by a greater increase in PV by approximately 1 and approximately 2 ml/kg, respectively, during the 23 h after exercise (P < 0.05). Glb(cont) remained constant throughout the experiment in both trials for both age groups. Thus the attenuated responses of Alb(cont) and PV after exercise in older subjects were restored by protein and CHO supplementation immediately after exercise, similarly to young subjects.

Abstract
This study aimed at evaluating the thermographic changes associated with localized exercise in young and elderly subjects. An exercise protocol using 1 kg load was applied during 3 min to the knee flexors of 14 elderly (67 +/- 5 years) and 15 young (23 +/- 2 years) healthy subjects. The posterior thigh's skin temperature of the exercised limb and contralateral limb were measured by infrared thermography on pre-exercise, immediately post-exercise, and during the 10-min period post-exercise. Difference (p < 0.01) between elderly and young subjects was observed on pre-exercise temperature. Although differences were not observed between pre-exercise and immediately post-exercise temperature in the exercised limb, thermographic profile displayed heat concentration in exercised areas for both groups. Temperature reduction was only observed for the young group on the 10-min post-exercise (p < 0.05) in the exercised limb (30.7 +/- 1.7 to 30.3 +/- 1.5 degrees C). In contrast, there was a temperature reduction post-exercise (p < 0.01) in the contralateral limb for both groups. These results present new evidences that elderly and young subjects display similar capacity of heat production; however, the elderly subjects presented a lower resting temperature and slower heat dissipation. This work contributes to improve the understanding about temperature changes in elderly subjects and may present implications to the sports and rehabilitation programs.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine whether high-intensity interval walking training increased thigh muscle strength and peak aerobic capacity and reduced blood pressure more than moderate-intensity continuous walking training. PARTICIPANTS AND METHODS From May 18, 2004, to October 15, 2004 (5-month study period), 60 men and 186 women with a mean +/- SD age of 63 +/- 6 years were randomly divided into 3 groups: no walking training, moderate-intensity continuous walking training, and high-intensity interval walking training. Participants in the moderate-intensity continuous walking training group were instructed to walk at approximately 50% of their peak aerobic capacity for walking, using a pedometer to verify that they took 8000 steps or more per day for 4 or more days per week. Those in the high-intensity interval walking training group, who were monitored by accelerometry, were instructed to repeat 5 or more sets of 3-minute low-intensity walking at 40% of peak aerobic capacity for walking followed by a 3-minute high-intensity walking above 70% of peak aerobic capacity for walking per day for 4 or more days per week. Isometric knee extension and flexion forces, peak aerobic capacity for cycling, and peak aerobic capacity for walking were all measured both before and after training. RESULTS The targets were met by 9 of 25 men and 37 of 59 women in the no walking training group, by 8 of 16 men and 43 of 59 women in the moderate-intensity continuous walking training group, and by 11 of 19 men and 31 of 68 women in the high-intensity interval walking training group. In the high-intensity interval walking training group, isometric knee extension increased by 13%, isometric knee flexion by 17%, peak aerobic capacity for cycling by 8%, and peak aerobic capacity for walking by 9% (all, P<.001), all of which were significantly greater than the increases observed in the moderate-intensity continuous walking training group (all, P<.01). Moreover, the reduction in resting systolic blood pressure was higher for the high-intensity interval walking training group (P=.01). CONCLUSION High-intensity interval walking may protect against age-associated increases in blood pressure and decreases in thigh muscle strength and peak aerobic capacity.

Abstract
The purposes of this review are to show pathophysiological mechanisms for heat illness during working in a hot environment and accordingly provide some preventive considerations from a viewpoint of body fluid homeostasis. The incidence of the heat illness is closely associated with body temperature regulation, which is much affected by body fluid state in humans. Heat generated by contracting muscles during working increases body temperature, which, in a feedback manner, drives heat-dissipation mechanisms of skin blood flow and sweating to prevent a rise in body temperature. However, the impairment of heat-dissipation mechanisms caused by hard work in hot, humid, and dehydrated conditions accelerates the increase in body temperature, and, if not properly treated, leads to heat illness. First, we overviewed thermoregulation during working (exercising) in a hot environment, describe the effects of dehydration on skin blood flow and sweating, and then explained how they contributes to the progression toward heat illness. Second, we described the advantageous effects of blood volume expansion after heat acclimatization on temperature regulation during exercise as well as those of restitution from dehydration by supplementation of carbohydrate-electrolyte solution. Finally, we described that the deteriorated thermoregulation in the elderly is closely associated with the impaired body fluid regulation and that blood volume expansion by exercise training with protein supplementation improves thermoregulation.

Abstract
It is well known that hyperosmolality suppresses thermoregulatory responses and that plasma osmolality (P(osmol)) increases with exercise intensity. We examined whether the decreased esophageal temperature thresholds for cutaneous vasodilation (TH(FVC)) and sweating (TH(SR)) after 10-day endurance training (ET) are caused by either attenuated increase in P(osmol) at a given exercise intensity or blunted sensitivity of hyperosmotic suppression. Nine young male volunteers exercised on a cycle ergometer at 60% peak oxygen consumption rate (V(O2 peak)) for 1 h/day for 10 days at 30 degrees C. Before and after ET, thermoregulatory responses were measured during 20-min exercise at pretraining 70% V(O2 peak) in the same environment as during ET under isoosmotic or hyperosmotic conditions. Hyperosmolality by approximately 10 mosmol/kgH2O was attained by acute hypertonic saline infusion. After ET, V(O2 peak) and blood volume (BV) both increased by approximately 4% (P < 0.05), followed by a decrease in TH(FVC) (P < 0.05) but not by that in TH(SR). Although there was no significant decrease in P(osmol) at the thresholds after ET, the sensitivity of increase in TH(FVC) at a given increase in P(osmol) [deltaTH(FVC)/deltaP(osmol), degrees C x (mosmol/kgH2O)(-1)], determined by hypertonic infusion, was reduced to 0.021 +/- 0.005 from 0.039 +/- 0.004 before ET (P < 0.05). The individual reductions in deltaTH(FVC)/deltaP(osmol) after ET were highly correlated with their increases in BV around TH(FVC) (r = -0.89, P < 0.005). In contrast, there was no alteration in the sensitivity of the hyperosmotic suppression of sweating after ET. Thus the downward shift of TH(FVC) after ET was partially explained by the blunted sensitivity to hyperosmolality, which occurred in proportion to the increase in BV.

Abstract
PURPOSE To test the hypothesis that in males aged 65-75 yr when the total amount of work completed is similar in endurance training three times per week for 12 wk at either 50% or 70% peak oxygen uptake (VO2(peak)), there will be no significant difference in time course and amplitude of selected responses. METHODS Subjects were randomly assigned to three groups: 70% VO2(peak), N = 19; 50% VO2(peak), N = 16; or control group, N = 19. Subjects underwent a maximal cycle exercise test and blood volume (Evans Blue) determination at 0, 4, 8, and 12 wk. A submaximal exercise test (50 W) was conducted at weeks 0 and 12 where cardiac output was determined. The exercise groups maintained the same exercise relative intensity throughout the 12 wk and completed a similar total amount of work. RESULTS There were significant and similar increases in peak VO2, power and heart rate (HR) for both exercise groups. Linear models best described the time course for peak power and HR in both exercise groups. In the 70% VO2(peak) group, a quadratic model for VO2 and a linear model for VE were the best fit. There were no significant changes in blood or plasma volume for any groups over the 12 wk. Significant increases in stroke volume and significant decreases in HR at 50 W were found in both exercise groups after training. CONCLUSION Moderate-intensity cycle exercise (50% VO2(peak)) to achieve 180-200 kJ per session, three times a week for 12 wk is a safe and effective stimulus for healthy asymptomatic men aged 65-75 yr to improve functional capacity in a primarily linear manner.

Abstract
We investigated the effect of head-down bed rest (HDBR) for 14 days on thermoregulatory sweating and cutaneous vasodilation in humans. Fluid intake was ad libitum during HDBR. We induced whole body heating by increasing skin temperature for 1 h with a water-perfused blanket through which hot water (42 degrees C) was circulated. The experimental room was air-conditioned (27 degrees C, 30-40% relative humidity). We measured skin blood flow (chest and forearm), skin temperatures (chest, upper arm, forearm, thigh, and calf), and tympanic temperature. We also measured sweat rate by the ventilated capsule method in which the skin area for measurement was drained by dry air conditioned at 27 degrees C under similar skin temperatures in both trials. We calculated cutaneous vascular conductance (CVC) from the ratio of skin blood flow to mean blood pressure. From tympanic temperature-sweat rate and -CVC relationships, we assessed the threshold temperature and sensitivity as the slope response of variables to a given change in tympanic temperature. HDBR increased the threshold temperature for sweating by 0.31 degrees C at the chest and 0.32 degrees C at the forearm, whereas it reduced sensitivity by 40% at the chest and 31% at the forearm. HDBR increased the threshold temperature for cutaneous vasodilation, whereas it decreased sensitivity. HDBR reduced plasma volume by 11%, whereas it did not change plasma osmolarity. The increase in the threshold temperature for sweating correlated with that for cutaneous vasodilation. In conclusion, HDBR attenuated thermoregulatory sweating and cutaneous vasodilation by increasing the threshold temperature and decreasing sensitivity. HDBR increased the threshold temperature for sweating and cutaneous vasodilation by similar magnitudes, whereas it decreased their sensitivity by different magnitudes.

Abstract
To determine the mechanisms underlying increased aerobic power in response to exercise training in octogenarians, we studied mildly frail elderly men and women randomly assigned to an exercise group (n = 22) who participated in a training program of 6 mo of physical therapy, strength training, and walking followed by 3 mo of more intense endurance exercise at 78% of peak heart rate or a control sedentary group (n = 24). Peak O2 consumption (V(O2 peak)) increased 14% in the exercise group (P < 0.0001) but decreased slightly in controls. Training induced 14% increase (P = 0.027) in peak exercise cardiac output (Q), determined via acetylene re-breathing, and no change in arteriovenous O2 content difference. The increase in Q was mediated by increases in heart rate (P = 0.009) and probably stroke volume (P = 0.096). Left ventricular stroke work also increased significantly. In the men, the increase in V(O2 peak) was exclusively due to a large increase in peak Q (22%). In the women, the gain in V(O2 peak) was due to small increases in Q and O2 extraction from skeletal muscles. Pulse pressure normalized for stroke volume and arterial elastance during peak effort did not change with training. Controls showed no changes. The results suggest that, although frail octogenarians have a diminished capacity for improvement in aerobic power in response to exercise training, this adaptation is mediated mostly by an increase in Q during peak effort. Furthermore, Q likely plays a greater role in the adaptive increase in V(O2 peak) in old men than old women.
