Abstract
INTRODUCTION the lifestyles of individuals with myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1), also known as Steinert’s disease, are poorly understood and yet they need to be considered when it comes to effective long-term care. The nursing care provided in referral centers is mindful of the clinical diversity of Steinert’s disease when it comes to interdisciplinary care, but the disease is more complex from a relational point of view. The objective of this qualitative study was to understand the life experiences of individuals with Steinert’s disease, by looking at the limitations of their bodies and the adaptation strategies they develop. METHOD this social science and nursing science study examines this problem of care, adopting an ethno-sociological perspective. RESULTS The study brought to light the changes that Steinert’s disease imposes on a body. These changes contribute to individuals’ construction of a body schema and social identity, which, despite allowing them to maintain a “normal” daily life for as long as possible, can also reach limits, requiring them to make radical life changes. The study’s results are discussed using an analytical framework based on the four different ways of interpreting the body proposed by Nicolas Vonarx: the “material body,” the “able body,” the “feeling body,” and the “knowing/judging body.” To discuss the role the body plays for people living with Steinert’s disease within a normative society, we propose that the concept of the “socializing body” be added to this framework.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Non-dystrophic myotonia, periodic paralysis and, to a certain extent, myotonic dystrophies are rare hereditary skeletal muscle channelopathies, charactarized by myotonia or episodic muscle weakness. This review highlights the diagnostic challenges and treatment options. RESULTS Some of these rare skeletal muscle disorders are associated with a broad range of systemic and nonspecific muscle symptoms. Consequently, patients are often referred to the internist before seeing a neurologist. This article provides clinical clues to better diagnose an tackle these unique disorders. CONCLUSION A increased knowledge will reduce the diagnostic delay, improve monitoring and treatment, and might even prevent potentially life-threatening conditions as seen in DM.

Abstract
To date, generic questionnaires have been used to investigate quality of life (QoL) in chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (CIDP) patients. Although these measures are very useful, they are not usually precise enough to measure all specific characteristics of the disease. Our aim was to investigate QoL using the neuromuscular disease-specific questionnaire (individualized neuromuscular quality of life, INQoL) in a large cohort of patients with CIDP. Our study comprised 106 patients diagnosed with CIDP. INQoL questionnaire, Medical Research Council (MRC) sum score, Inflammatory Neuropathy Cause and Treatment (INCAT) disability score, Visual Analogue Pain Scale, Beck Depression Inventory, and Krupp's Fatigue Severity Scale were used in our study. Physical domains of INQoL were more affected than mental, and the overall score was 57 ± 25. Significant predictors of higher INQoL score in our patients with CIDP were severe fatigue (β = 0.35, p < 0.01), higher INCAT disability score at time of testing (β = 0.29, p < 0.01), and being unemployed/retired (β = 0.22, p < 0.05). QoL was reduced in our cohort of CIDP patients, which was more pronounced in physical segments. Patients with fatigue, more severe disability, and unemployed/retired need special attention of neurologists because they could be at greater risk to have worse QoL.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The Individualized Neuromuscular Quality of Life (INQoL) is used to measure the quality of life (QoL) of patients with neuromuscular disease. We conducted this study to translate and validate the Japanese version of the INQoL in patients with myotonic dystrophy. METHODS Forward and backward translation, patient testing, and psychometric validation were performed. We used the 36-Item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36) and the modified Rankin scale for concurrent validation. RESULTS The Japanese INQoL was administered to 90 adult patients. The coefficients for internal consistency and test-retest reliability were adequately high in most domains (Cronbach α 0.88-0.96 and intraclass coefficient 0.64-0.99). INQoL domains were moderately to strongly associated with relevant SF-36 subscales (Spearman's ρ -0.23 to -0.74). Symptom severity, disease duration, employment status, and use of a ventilator influenced overall QoL. DISCUSSION The INQoL is a reliable and validated measure of QoL for Japanese patients with myotonic dystrophy. Muscle Nerve, 2018.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Generic patient reported outcome measures have had varied success in tracking QoL in myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1). AIM To analyze changes of Individualized Neuromuscular Quality of Life questionnaire (INQoL) scores in clinic patients with DM1 over a 6-year period. METHOD Patients completed the INQoL at baseline and after a 6-year period through their attendance in a neurology outpatient clinic. Severity of muscular involvement in DM1 was analyzed using the Muscular Impairment Rating Scale (MIRS). RESULTS Ninety-nine DM1 patients completed a baseline visit. Sixty-seven of these patients were retested at an interval time. The overall INQoL score improved in our sample of patients (P<.05) as did the following subscales: myotonia (P<.05), pain (P<.05), activities (P<.01), social relationships (P<.01), and body image (P<.05). No changes were observed for the independence and emotions scales. There were no differences in mean change of INQoL scores between patients with worsened MIRS and those with no change in MIRS scale after follow-up (P>.05). CONCLUSION Individualized Neuromuscular Quality of Life questionnaire scores improved in our cohort of DM1 patients during a 6-year period. INQoL score did not correlate with progression of muscle weakness. This must be better understood before the selection of the instrument for use in trials to measure therapeutic benefit in DM1 patients.

Abstract
Background Tongue and pharyngeal pressure is an essential factor associated with the swallowing function; however, little is known about the difference in tongue and pharyngeal pressure between neuromuscular diseases. This study aimed to characterize tongue and pharyngeal pressure in myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1), Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) patients. Methods This study recruited 17 DMD patients, 32 DM1 patients, and 26 ALS patients. They underwent separate measurements of tongue and pharyngeal pressure under videofluoroscopy, swallowing 5 mL of barium water. We measured the largest change in pharyngeal pressure in the hypopharynx and the upper esophageal sphincter (UES) over several swallows. Results The mean tongue pressure (TP) was greatest in the DMD group than in the other groups (p<0.01). There was a significant difference in pressure changes in the hypopharynx and UES between the DM1 group and other groups (p<0.01). Significant correlations were observed between pressure change in the UES and the patient’s age in the DMD group (R=–0.500, p=0.045) and between pressure change in the hypopharynx and TP in the DM1 group (R=0.421, p=0.016). There was a significant correlation between pressure change in the hypopharynx and disease severity in the ALS group (R=0.435, p=0.030). Conclusion Patients with DMD, DM1, and ALS have weakness in the muscles involved in swallowing; however, the results of this study suggested that each disorder has a distinctive profile of impairment in the swallowing function.

Abstract
Myotonic dystrophies are multisystemic diseases characterized not only by muscle and heart dysfunction but also by CNS alteration. They are now recognized as brain diseases affecting newborns and children for myotonic dystrophy type 1 and adults for both myotonic dystrophy type 1 and type 2. In the past two decades, much progress has been made in understanding the mechanisms underlying the DM symptoms allowing development of new molecular therapeutic tools with the ultimate aim of curing the disease. This review describes the state of the art for the characterization of CNS related symptoms, the development of molecular strategies to target the CNS as well as the available tools for screening and testing new possible treatments.

Abstract
Myotonic dystrophy (DM) is the most common adult muscular dystrophy, characterized by autosomal dominant progressive myopathy, myotonia, and multiorgan involvement. To date, two distinct forms caused by similar mutations in two different genes have been identified: myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1) and myotonic dystrophy type 2 (DM2). Aberrant transcription and mRNA processing of multiple genes due to RNA-mediated toxic gain-of function has been suggested to cause the complex phenotype in DM1 and DM2. However, despite clinical and genetic similarities, DM1 and DM2 may be considered as distinct disorders. This review is an update on the latest findings specific to DM2, including explanations for the differences in clinical manifestations and pathophysiology between the two forms of myotonic dystrophies.

Abstract
Myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1), also called Steinert's disease, is a genetic multisystem disorder that has raised, in the last years, high interest because of the high variable clinical spectrum and related disability. Children with myotonic dystrophy are affected by behavioural problems and intellectual disability, finally impacting on their degree of engagement in family, work and social activities. The transition phase, representing the process of moving from adolescence to adulthood, can be severely affected by growing up with a neuromuscular disorder, with significant impact on patient's and families' quality of life. Although conceptual models of health assistance for individual with genetic disorders have already been proposed the burden for the patient and his family is still relevant. Therefore to afford this critical condition it would be suitable to plan proper educational and psychosocial programs, identifying areas of unmet needs and targeted health objectives that ensure the right support to DM1 population.
