Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM Bibliometric studies to determine the characteristics of the most cited articles in prosthodontic journals are lacking. PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to analyze the characteristics of the 100 most cited articles in prosthodontic journals between 1951 and 2019. MATERIAL AND METHODS The Google Scholar database was used to retrieve the list of journals with titles containing the term "Prosthodontic" or "Prosthetic." Twelve journals were filtered, and of these, only 8 were related to dentistry and hence were included in the study. A search was then performed for each of the selected journals under "Publication Name," and articles were arranged by the category "Times Cited." The 100 most cited articles from the 8 journals were selected and analyzed with regard to journal name, year of publication, authors and their country, type of study, and area of research. RESULTS The 100 most cited articles were published between 1958 and 2013, with the numbers of citations ranging between 2368 and 343. The journal with the largest number of the articles cited was the "Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry" with 72 articles, followed by the "International Journal of Prosthodontics" with 25 articles. The decade with most articles published was the 1990s with 33 articles. Many of the authors of most cited articles were from the United States or Sweden. Most articles reported reviews (35 articles), followed by experimental studies (34); the most commonly cited area of research was related to dental implants. CONCLUSIONS This bibliometric analysis of the 100 most cited articles revealed interesting facts about scientific progress in the field of prosthodontics.

Abstract
Background Article-level citation count is a hallmark indicating scientific impact. We aimed to pinpoint and evaluate the top 50 most-cited articles in orthostatic tremor (OT). Methods The ISI Web of Knowledge database and 2017 Journal Citation Report Science Edition were used to retrieve the 50 top-cited OT articles published from 1984 to April 2019. Information was collected by the Analyze Tool on the Web of Science, including number of citations, publication title, journal name, publication year, and country and institution of origin. Supplementary analyses were undertaken to clarify authorship, study design, level of evidence, and category. Results Up to 66% of manuscripts were recovered from five journals: Movement Disorders (n = 18), Brain (n = 4), Journal of Clinical Neurophysiology (n = 4), Neurology (n = 4), and Clinical Neurophysiology (n = 3). Articles were published between 1984 and 2018, with expert opinion as the predominant design (n = 22) and review as category (n = 17). Most articles had level 5 evidence (n = 26). According to their countries of origin, 34% of articles belonged to the United States (n = 17) leading the list, followed by United Kingdom (n = 15). University College London yielded the greater number of articles (n = 12), followed by the University of Kiel (n = 9). Most popular authors were G. Deuschl (n = 10), C.D. Marsden (n = 6), J. Jankovic (n = 5), P.D. Thompson (n = 5), J.C. Rothwell (n = 5), L.J. Findley (n = 4), and P. Brown (n = 4), who together accounted for 48% of them. All papers were in English. Discussion Publishing high-cited OT articles could be facilitated by source journal, study design, category, publication language, and country and institution of origin.

Abstract
Objective The aim of this bibliometric analysis is to evaluate the importance and impact of the articles that have been published with the title gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) in the specialty of obstetrics & gynecology and endocrinology during the period 1946-2019. It also reveals that the area of GDM has received increased attention and interest by researchers, research funding institutions, and practitioners. Material and methods A thorough database search of Scopus and Web of Science was performed and the articles pertaining to gestational diabetes mellitus that were published between 1946 and 2019 were reviewed by two reviewers, Iftikhar PM and Ali F, with respect to their year of publication, authors, country of origin, journal of publication, and the affiliated institutions of the authors as well as journals. Institutional review board approval was not required for this study, as the data being analyzed were already available electronically, and otherwise, in libraries and databases. Results The 30 most-cited articles on gestational diabetes mellitus were thoroughly analyzed. The top article was cited 5028 times while the least number of citations for any article was 328. Among these 30 articles, five were published in the year 2005, which is the highest number of publications in any given year of the timeline being considered in this study. Most of the articles (n = 18) were from the United States of America, followed by Australia (n = 3); other countries contributed to two or fewer articles. Diabetes Care made most (n = 8) of the list. We found one author who had three publications and the rest contributed two or less articles. The top article in our study was cited almost 5028 times; meanwhile, there are 13 journals from different specialties that have referenced the most cited articles pertaining to gestational diabetes. Conclusion Our bibliometric analysis provides a picture of scientific research, which will help in evidence-based descriptions, comparisons, and visualizations of research output in GDM, and it can be used to explicate and describe the patterns of performance and impact of GDM research.

Abstract
Aim The purpose of this study was to identify and characterize the 100 most cited articles on cone beam computed tomography (CBCT). Materials and Methods A comprehensive list of citation classics in CBCT was generated by searching the Scopus database without year or language restrictions. The top 100 articles were retrieved after reading abstracts or full texts. The following study variables were evaluated: number of citations, citation density, journal name, impact factor, category and quartile of journals, publication year, authors with their affiliations, article type, and topics covered. Results The citation number ranged from 86 to 624, with a mean of 161.9 citations per article. The top 100 articles were distributed in 29 journals, and the journal with the most articles was Dentomaxillofacial Radiology (n=16). The articles were published between 1998 and 2012, and eight authors published more than 3 papers. The USA produced the most papers (n=38), followed by the UK (n=12). King's college London Dental Institute led the list of classics, with 8 articles. Conclusions This is the first citation analysis to provide a detailed list of the most influential articles on CBCT and helps to recognize the quality of the works, discoveries, and trends steering the field.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES: To identify and analyze the 100 most-cited articles in orthodontics indexed in the Web of Science Category of "Dental, Oral Surgery and Medicine" from 1946 to 2016. MATERIALS AND METHODS: On hundred articles were identified in a search of the database of the ISI Web of Science and Journal Citation Reports, applying the truncated search term "orthodon*." Records were manually refined and normalized to unify terms and to remove typographical, transcription, and/or indexing errors. RESULTS: The 100 most-cited articles were published between 1946 and 2012, with numbers of citations ranging from 115 to 881. Of the 251 authors participating, 87.65% published a single work, while three authors published four works. Most of the authors with several citations were from the United States, although the University of Oslo produced the highest number of frequently cited works. Most of the articles were clinical studies, and the most frequently cited topic was mini-implants. It was noted that self-citation could be a potential cause of bias in bibliometric analysis. CONCLUSIONS: This bibliometric citation analysis reveals new, useful, and interesting information about scientific progress in the field of orthodontics.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Bibliometric analysis is a method for quantifying the research productivity, author performance, and manuscript impact. The citation count received by a scientific article is one of the indicators of its impact within a field. The purpose of this study was to identify the 100 top-cited articles published in regenerative endodontics and to analyze their main characteristics. METHODS Thomson Reuters Web of Science was searched to retrieve the 100 most-cited articles in "regenerative endodontics" published from January 1991 to February 2018 in the category of "Dentistry, Oral Surgery and Medicine." Among the included top-cited articles, the following parameters were recorded and analyzed: journal name, authors, institution, country, publication title and year, number of citations and average citations, type of study, collaborations, and key words. The data were analyzed using SPSS version 19.0 (IBM Corp, Armonk, NY) and VOS viewer software (version 1.6.7; Leiden University Center for Science and Technology Studies, Leiden, Netherlands). RESULTS Among the 100 top cited articles, the highest number of citations that an article received was 309. The top cited articles appeared in 14 different journals, and the Journal of Endodontics published the greatest number of these articles (66%). The majority of articles were published in the year 2014 (n = 17). The majority of articles originated from the United States (n = 51) with the most contribution from The University of Texas Health Science Center, San Antonio, TX. The most frequent first authors were Torabinejad (n = 4), Nosrat (n = 3), and Thibodeau (n = 3). In vitro studies were the most common study design (n = 29) followed by reviews (n = 21). "Regenerative endodontics" was the most frequently used key word. CONCLUSIONS This bibliometric analysis reveals the progress and trend of research in the field of regenerative endodontics. The in vitro articles published in the field of regenerative endodontics had the highest number of citations and average citation rates.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Citation analysis reflects the scientific recognition and influential performance of an article in the scientific community. The objective of this study was to identify and characterize the 100 most cited articles on oral submucous fibrosis (OSF). METHODS A list of 100 most cited articles related to OSF was retrieved from the Science Citation Index-Expanded tool of Scopus database in May 2018. The articles were further reviewed, and basic information was recorded including the number of citations, citation density, journals, with its impact factor, category and quartile, publication year, authors, institution and country of origin, article type and level of evidence. Descriptive statistics were used to summarize the results. RESULTS The most frequently cited article received 780 citations, while the least frequently cited article received 49 (mean 107.5 citations per article). There were 38 different journals with Journal of Oral Pathology and Medicine having the most citations (n = 22). The 100 most cited articles were published from 1966 to 2013, with 81% published after 1990. Thirteen authors listed 5 or more articles in the top 100 list, and India was found to be the most prolific country with 38 articles. In terms of article type, there were 72 research articles and 28 review articles. CONCLUSIONS This first citation analysis of the 100 most cited articles renders a historical perspective on the progress of research in the field of OSF and enables the comprehensive identification and recognition of the most important and relevant research topics concerned.

Abstract
Background The number of citations that an article has received can reflect its importance in a specialty. The purpose of this study was to analyse the characteristics of top-cited articles published in 24 emergency medicine (EM) journals in the Thomson Reuters Web of Science (WoS). Method WoS were used to identify the 100 top-cited articles published in EM journals. Basic information, including title, authors, country of origin (based on the first author), institution, publication year, journal name, language, document type, citation times and impact factor, was collected and analysed. Results The 100 top-cited articles in EM journals, cited from 175 to 530 times, were published between 1979 and 2010, with most articles published between 2001 and 2005. All articles were written in English, and the United States contributed the most. The articles were distributed in seven different EM journals, led by Annals of Emergency Medicine with 45 articles. Resuscitation medicine was the most discussed topic. Conclusion The bibliometric analysis on the 100 top-cited articles in EM journals from WoS demonstrates some significant points, which can have important implications for researchers in evaluating and orienting their research.

Abstract
AIMS To identify and characterize the top-cited articles in the field of islet transplantation. METHODS We used the Science Citation Index Expanded database to identify the most frequently cited articles published after 1900. Articles were evaluated using the following characteristics: citation number, publication year, study design, references, country and institution of origin, authorship, and journal. Keyword analysis and citation networks were used to analyze research trends. RESULTS The most frequently cited articles received between 146 and 2988 citations; the median was 291. All of the most frequently cited articles were published between 1972 and 2012, and 85 articles were published after 1990. The most popular study design involved basic science (75 articles). The leading countries were the United States (US) and Canada, and the leading institutions were the University of Alberta, Canada, and the University of Minnesota, in the US. Journals specializing in diabetes or transplantation published more than half of the articles (n = 53, 52%), with the journal Diabetes publishing the largest number (n = 30). No association was found between a journal's impact factor and the number of top-cited articles it published. There was no correlation between the number of citations and the number of years since publication, authors, participating institutions, or countries involved. Top-cited articles focused on 2 themes: the use of antirejection immunotherapy or biocompatible encapsulations to prolong graft survival, and assessments of the efficacy of islet transplants, in particular, islet allografts. CONCLUSIONS Our study can help researchers to identify and decipher the characteristics of top-cited articles in the field of islet transplantation. Just as clinically successful allografts are carried out using the Edmonton protocol, autografts and xenografts should be similarly strengthened to solve problems relating to immune rejection and islet sources, respectively.

Abstract
This review examines some of the potential risks of orthodontic therapy along with their evidence base. The risks of orthodontic treatment include periodontal damage, pain, root resorption, tooth devitalization, temporomandibular disorder, caries, speech problems and enamel damage. These risks can be understood to arise from a synergy between treatment and patient factors. In general terms, treatment factors that can influence risk include appliance type, force vectors and duration of treatment whilst relevant patient factors are both biological and behavioural. Hence, the natural variation between orthodontic treatment plans and patients gives rise to variations in risk. A good understanding of these risks is required for clinicians to obtain informed consent before starting treatment as well as to reduce the potential for harm during treatment. After considering each of these risks, a conceptual framework is presented to help clinicians better understand how orthodontic risks arise and may therefore be mitigated.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Citation is the name given for a scientific publication in order to be used as a reference by another publication. In this study, we reviewed the most frequently cited publications in urology from Turkey. Although the number of citations is not completely definitive on its own, it shows the importance and effect of the publication. Besides the number of citations directly determines the impact factor of the journals and this factor is generally used in the evaluation of the quality and importance of the journal. MATERIAL AND METHODS On March 7-14, 2016, 51 studies with highest number of citations from Turkey are determined from Science Citation Index Expanded database index and the journals in which studies are published, the authors of the publications, their cities and departments, study types, publication date of the studies and the number of citations are recorded. RESULTS The most frequently encountered subjects in the publications that are mostly cited from Turkey are urolithiasis (23.5%), infertility (15.6%), benign prostatic hyperplasia (11.7%), sexual dysfunction (11.7%) and bladder carcinoma/urothelial carcinoma (9.8%). Distribution of 51 publications is as follows: 18 case series, 11 randomized study, 7 non-randomized study, 6 study, 3 review, 3 cross-sectional studies and 3 survey studies. Of all the studies, 68.6% are from Ankara, İstanbul and İzmir and 72.5% of them have originated from the university hospitals. CONCLUSION It is important to show the most cited Turkish publications in order to show the contribution in the world literature regarding to urology. The most cited publications in Turkey belong to urolithiasis and andrology areas. When the citation analysis publications in urology and different areas both in Turkey and in the world, it is observed that the number of our qualified publications is at acceptable levels.

Abstract
AIM The aim of the present study was to analyze two distinct biomedical electronic databases for the 100 most-cited articles in the field of periodontology. METHODS Two electronic databases (Scopus [SCO] and Web of Science [WOS]) were used to retrieve lists of the 100 most-cited articles using appropriately-chosen keywords. The correlation between the number of citations and age of publication was evaluated statistically. RESULTS Sixty-three papers could be found in both lists. The mean number of citations in SCO was 476.7 ± 361.9 and 371.2 ± 249.7 in WOS. The mean age of publication in the SCO list was 21.4 ± 9.4 years and 18.6 ± 6.5 years in the WOS list. No correlation was found between age of publication and number of citations for both databases. CONCLUSIONS There is a lack of evidence of the correlation between age of publication and number of citations. The concordance between the two databases that were reviewed was relatively significant, even though the rankings of the most-cited articles are dependent on the number of journals covered by one database. The actual value of the number of citations to measure the quality of one article should be carefully evaluated.

Abstract
Purpose: The purpose was to provide a longitudinal overview of
published studies that use finite element analysis in dental research, by using
the SCI-expanded database of Web of Science® (Thomson Reuters). Material and Methods: Eighty publications from 1999-2000 and 473 from
2009-2010 were retrieved. This literature grew faster than the overall dental
literature. The number of publishing countries doubled. The main journals were
American or English, and dealt with implantology. For the top 10 journals
publishing dental finite element papers, the mean impact factor increased by 75%
during the decade. Results: Finite elements generate an increasing interest from
dental authors and publishers worldwide.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIM Examination of top-cited articles is a tool that can help to identify and monitor outstanding scientific researches and landmark papers. We aimed to identify the 100 most cited published papers in peer-reviewed biomedical journals in the field of digestive diseases and to examine their characteristics. METHODS The Web of Science (including Science Citation Index) was searched for the most cited papers related to digestive diseases, published from 1955 to the present. The top 100 most cited articles were identified. The number of citations, countries, and institutions of origin, year of publication, study design, topic, and levels of evidence of the articles were noted and analyzed. RESULTS The most top-cited articles had a mean of 1375 citations. These articles were published between 1978 and 2009 in 29 high-impact journals, with the New England Journal of Medicine (n = 22) topping the list. Of the 100 articles, 34 were clinical studies, 15 were review articles, and 34 were concerned basic science. These articles came from 18 countries, with the USA contributing most of the top-cited articles (n = 53). Eighty-seven institutions produced these 100 top-cited articles, led by the University of Barcelona (n = 4). Seven persons authored two or more of these top-cited articles. The mostly represented specialty was gastrointestinal oncology (n = 49). CONCLUSIONS Our study can give a historical perspective on the scientific progress of digestive diseases, as well as allow for recognition of most important advances in this area and provide useful information to guide future researches.

Abstract
Objective To identify the 100 most-cited articles pertaining to human cleft lip and palate research published in dentistry, oral surgery, and medicine journals and to identify their principal bibliometric characteristics. Design Web-based bibliometric analysis. Main Outcome Measure The Web of Science was searched to identify the 100 most-cited clinical articles related to cleft lip and/or palate. Information was extracted with regard to total number of citations, number of authors, affiliations, year, and journal of publication, Medical Subject Headings, type of study, specific area of study. Trends in citations were assessed. Results The 100 most-cited articles identified received between 437 and 58 citations. The oldest was published in 1954 and the most recent in 2008. The number of authors ranged from 1 to 12, with an average of three authors per article. Most of the first authors were affiliated with institutions in the United States, with the most prolific institution being the University of Iowa. More than 70% of the studies appeared in The Cleft Palate–Craniofacial Journal. There was a significant negative correlation between average citations per year and time since publication ( P < .001); whereas, a significant positive correlation was observed between average citations per year and number of total citations ( P < .001). Conclusions The 100 most-cited articles in human cleft lip and palate research published in dentistry, oral surgery, and medicine journals are listed and characterized. This can be used as a potential knowledge base for specialists in training or to produce relevant knowledge defining the direction of future research.

Abstract
PURPOSES It is widely known that in Orthopaedics, as in each specialty, the academic influence of an article is also determined by the number of times the article is cited. The aim of this study was to identify the 50 most frequently cited Italian orthopaedics journal articles and to analyse the characteristics that might have made them more citable. METHODS Science Citation Index Expanded was searched for the 50 most frequently cited Italian orthopaedics journal articles between 1988 and 2013 in the subject category "Orthopaedics". RESULTS The 50 most frequently cited articles were all published in English and were published in 12 of the 67 journals in the subject category "Orthopaedics" in the Institute for Scientific Information Web Science (Thomson Reuters, New York, New York, USA). One half of the articles were published before 2000 and the other half later. The number of citations ranged from 423 of the first article (mean citation/years 21.15) to 83 of the fiftieth (mean citation/years 16.60). The articles were all categorized under orthopaedic field, but each of them spanned from orthopaedics to a specific sub-specialty. The majority was clinical articles (n = 39), and the most common fields were sport orthopaedic surgery (including arthroscopy and cartilage) (n = 19) and biomechanics (n = 12). CONCLUSIONS This list of 50 most frequently cited Italian articles is, to our knowledge, significantly important for the general orthopaedic scientific community, particularly for the Italian orthopaedic community. Researchers and doctors may use this work to make their future publications more influential and citable.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To analyze the types of articles and authorship characteristics of three orthodontic journals--American Journal of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics (AJODO), The Angle Orthodontist (AO), and European Journal of Orthodontics (EJO)--published between 2008 and 2012 and to assess the differences in content within this period and an earlier period of 1998 to 2002. MATERIALS AND METHODS Each journal's content was accessed through the web edition. From each article, the following parameters were recorded: article type, number of authors, number of affiliations, source of article (referring to the first author's affiliation), and geographic origin. Descriptive statistics were performed and selected parameters were analyzed with the Pearson chi-square or Fisher exact test for independence at the .05 level of significance. RESULTS Review of differences between the two periods showed that the number of publications was almost double. The percentages of multi-authored articles increased. Fewer studies derived from the United States/Canada and European Union countries. Increases for articles from non-European Union countries, Asia, and other countries were found. Characteristics of the second period showed that the EJO and AO published more research articles, whereas the AJODO regularly published case reports and other articles. Approximately 75% of all studies derived from orthodontic departments. CONCLUSIONS The publications from 1998-2002 and 2008-2012 were significantly different both in terms of numbers and characteristics. Within 2008-2012 there were notable differences between the three journals concerning the type and origin of the publications.

Abstract
Background The impact of scientific articles is proportional to the citations they have received. Our aim was to identify and analyze the top 100 cited articles on essential tremor (ET). Methods The Institute for Scientific Information Web of Knowledge Database and the 2012 Journal Citation Report Science Editions were used to retrieve the 100 top-cited articles published about ET from 1960 to April 2013. Information was collected by the Analyze Tool on the Web of Science, including number of citations, publication title, journal name, publication year, and country and institution of origin. Additional analyses were then performed to determine authorship, article type, study design, and level of evidence. Results Almost half of the articles were retrieved from two journals: Neurology (n = 31) and Movement Disorders (n = 18). The top 100 articles were published between 1960 and 2010, with case series being the most common study design (n = 34). According to their countries of origin, more than half of the articles were generated in the United States (n = 54), which led the list. Columbia University in the United States produced the largest number of ET articles (n = 19), followed by the University of Kansas (n = 18). The most frequent first authors of the top-cited articles in ET were E.D. Louis (n = 27) and W.C. Koller (n = 15), who together accounted for 42% of the articles on the list. Discussion It is important to acknowledge the top-cited articles as they mark key topics and advances in ET.
