Abstract
Four distinct folding patterns are identified in two foldamer-type urea-thiourea catalysts bearing a basic dimethylamino unit by a combination of X-ray crystallography, solution NMR studies, and computational studies (DFT). These patterns are characterized by different intramolecular hydrogen bonding schemes that arise largely from different thiourea conformers. The free base forms of the catalysts are characterized by folds where the intramolecular hydrogen bonds between the urea and the thiourea units remain intact. In contrast, the catalytically relevant salt forms of the catalyst, where the catalyst forms an ion pair with the substrate or substrate analogues, appear in two entirely different folding patterns. With larger anions that mimic the dialkyl malonate substrates, the catalysts maintain their native fold both in the solid state and in solution, but with smaller halide anions (fluoride, chloride, and bromide), the catalysts fold around the halide anion (anion receptor fold), and the intramolecular hydrogen bonds are disrupted. Titration of catalyst hexafluoroacetylacetonate salt with tetra-n-butylammonium chloride results in dynamic refolding of the catalyst from the native fold to the anion receptor fold.

Abstract
Interactions between fullerene C24 and a frequently used supplement for sport activities, ephedrine (EPH), have been studied in detail by a combination of density functional theory (DFT), time dependent DFT (TD-DFT) calculations, the symmetry-adapted perturbation theory (SAPT) approach and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Information about interaction energies and non-covalent interactions formed between C24 and EPH have been obtained by DFT calculations. TD-DFT calculations have been used in order to obtain UV/vis spectra and to check whether the presence of the EPH molecule produces significant changes in the spectrum. The SAPT approach has been employed in order to decompose the interaction energy into components and therefore to better understand the physical origins of interaction between C24 and EPH. Last, but not least, MD simulations have been used in order to track the influence of temperature on the interactions between C24 and EPH.

Abstract
Considered to be rigid, the urea and thiourea functionalities, often used in material chemistry and in asymmetric organocatalysis, are able to transmit information regarding 3D structure from a permanently chiral inducer part to a dynamically chiral (reporter) part of the molecule. Despite a considerable distance between the inducer and the reporter parts of the molecule, the chirality transfer phenomenon has been demonstrated for a series of secondary N-alkyl-N'-trityl ureas and thioureas. The induction of helicity in a stereodynamic trityl propeller is revealed by rising non-zero Cotton effects in the area of trityl absorption. The information regarding the 3D structure of the inducer is transferred to the reporter part of the system through a set of weak but complementary electrostatic interactions. The presence of two supramolecular motifs in the same molecule, characterized by opposite properties, significantly affected the molecular solid state structure of the thioureas and their abilities to assemble. In the crystalline phase, the model, a chiral N-tert-butyl-thiourea derivative that retains the extended Z,Z conformation of the linker, is prone to form a supramolecular network typical of secondary ureas and thioureas. In contrast, the presence of the hydrophobic trityl group suppresses the thioamide NHS[double bond, length as m-dash]C hydrogen bonds. Therefore, trityl acts as a supramolecular protecting group for thioamide functionality, hampering the formation of hydrogen bonded networks in the solid state.

Abstract
The glycoluril monomer is a popular building block in supramolecular chemistry as it is used for the synthesis of versatile host molecules which can interact with cationic, anionic or neutral guest molecules. Here we present the design and synthesis of a new hybrid macrocycle containing glycoluril and aromatic units. The reaction afforded a mixture of macrocyclic homologues from which a two-membered macrocycle was isolated as the main product. Two disastereomers of the macrocycle were separated and characterized by means of NMR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography. Conformational changes of these diastereomers were investigated using DFT models and variable-temperature NMR.

Abstract
The title compound, C25H25N9O9·C16H36N+·H2PO4 - (I) or (C25H25N9O9)·(n-Bu4N+)·(H2PO4 -) (systematic name: 3-(4-nitro-phen-yl)-1,1-bis-{2-[3-(4-nitro-phen-yl)ureido]eth-yl}urea tetra-butyl-ammonium di-hydrogen phosphate), comprises a tris-urea receptor (R), a di-hydrogen phosphate anion and a tetra-n-butyl-ammonium cation. It crystallizes with two independent formula units in the asymmetric unit. The conformations of the two tris-urea receptors are stabilized by N-H⋯O and C-H⋯O intra-molecular hydrogen bonds. Each di-hydrogen phosphate anion has two O-H⋯O inter-molecular hydrogen-bonding inter-actions with the other di-hydrogen phosphate anion. Inversion-related di-anion units are linked by further O-H⋯O hydrogen bonds, forming a chain propagating along the a-axis direction. Each di-hydrogen phosphate anion makes a total of four N-H⋯O(H2PO4 -) hydrogen bonds with two ureido subunits from two different tris-urea receptors, hence each tris-urea receptor provides the two ureido subunits for the encapsulation of the H2PO4 - hydrogen-bonded chain. There are numerous inter-molecular C-H⋯O hydrogen bonds present involving both receptor mol-ecules and the tetra-n-butyl-ammonium cations, so forming a supra-molecular three-dimensional structure. One of the butyl groups and one of the nitro groups are disordered over two positions of equal occupancy.

Abstract
Recent work has identified a bis-(p-nitrophenyl)ureidodecalin anion carrier as a promising candidate for biomedical applications, showing good activity for chloride transport in cells yet almost no cytotoxicity. To underpin further development of this and related compounds, a detailed structural and binding investigation is reported. Crystal structures of the transporter as five solvates confirm the diaxial positioning of urea groups while revealing a degree of conformational flexibility. Structures of complexes with Cl- , Br- , NO3- , SO42- and AcO- , supported by computational studies, show how the binding site can adapt to accommodate these anions. 1 H NMR binding studies revealed exceptionally high affinities for anions in DMSO, decreasing in the order SO42- >H2 PO4- ≈HCO3- ≈AcO- ≫HSO4- >Cl- >Br- >NO3- >I- . Analysis of the binding results suggests that selectivity is determined mainly by the H-bond acceptor strength of different anions, but is also modulated by receptor geometry.

In this paper, we report the solvent effect of excited state intermolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) reactions of urea compounds in the presence of tetrabutylammonium acetate (TBAAc). We prepared anthracene-urea compounds (9An and 2An), a pyrene-urea compound (Py) and an anthracene-diurea compound (9,10An), which have alkylsulfonyl groups to improve their solubility in various organic solvents. We investigated the solvent effects of the ESIPT reaction using absorption, fluorescence, and 1H NMR spectroscopy along with fluorescence decay measurements in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), acetonitrile (MeCN), tetrahydrofuran (THF) and toluene. The tautomer fluorescence of 9An showed remarkable solvent dependence on the spectral red-shift compared with 2An, Py and 9,10An. As a result of the detailed spectroscopic investigations with regard to the solvent including kinetic analysis of the ESIPT for 9AnAcO-, we revealed that the energy gap between the normal and tautomer forms in the excited state depended on the hydrogen bond acceptor basicity (β), which is one of the Kamlet-Taft solvent parameters. Finally, we discovered that the tautomer structures of aromatic-urea compounds were stabilized by hydrogen bond interactions.

Abstract
A thiourea-based receptor has been extensively studied for selective anion recognition for reasons of its strong hydrogen bond donor ability. In the present study, the thermodynamics of complexation between a thiourea-based receptor and acetate was examined in a water/acetonitrile mixture. The receptor used in this study was N,N'-bis(p-nitrophenyl)thiourea (BNPTU). UV/vis spectroscopic titration and isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) experiments clearly revealed endothermic and entropy-driven complexation of BNPTU with acetate in water/acetonitrile mixtures. Since the endothermic peaks found in water/acetonitrile mixtures were about three times greater than those in acetonitrile, it appears that preferential hydration of both receptor and acetate was responsible for the endothermic and entropy-driven complexation reaction. The thermodynamic properties found in this study have the potential to contribute to the design of a thiourea-based anion receptor.

Abstract
Four bridged cyclometalated diruthenium systems are highlighted in this Frontier article, including strongly-coupled diruthenium complexes with a short phen-1,4-diyl or a planar pyren-2,7-diyl bridge, redox asymmetric diruthenium complexes characterized by different terminal ligands on the two ends, diruthenium complexes with a urea bridge that allows modulating the degree of electronic coupling, and those with a redox-active amine bridge with varying electronic structures. These complexes posess redox couples with low potentials and intense intervalence charge transfer absorptions in the near-infrared region in the one-electron-oxidized mixed-valent state. They are appealing not only for providing a platform for fundamental electron transfer studies but also as molecular materials with multi-stage redox switching properties.
