A New Class of Organic−Inorganic Hybrid Materials: Hydrothermal Synthesis and Structural Characterization of Bimetallic Organophosphonate Oxide Phases of the Mo/Cu/O/RPO32- Family

Solid state coordination chemistry: structural consequences of variations in tether length in the oxovanadium–copper–bisterpy–{O3P(CH2)nPO3}4−system, n = 1–6 (bisterpy = 2,2′:4′,4″:2″,2‴-quarterpyridyl-6′,6″-di-2-pyridine)

Hydrothermal reactions of Na3VO4, an appropriate Cu(II) source, bisterpy and an organodiphosphonate, H2O3P(CH2)nPO3H2 (n = 1-6) yielded a family of materials of the type [Cu2(bisterpy)]4+/VxOy(n-)/[O3P(CH2)nPO3]4-. This family of bimetallic oxides is characterized by an unusual structural diversity. The oxides [[Cu2(bisterpy)]V2O4[O3PCH2PO3H]2] (1), [[Cu2(bisterpy)(H2O)]VO2[O3P(CH2)3PO3][HO3P(CH2)3PO3H2]] (4) and [[Cu2(bisterpy)]V2O4[O3P(CH2)6PO3H]2].2H2O (7.2H2O) are one-dimensional, while [[Cu2(bisterpy)(H2O)2]V2O4[O3P(CH2)2PO3][HO3P(CH2)2PO3H]2] (2), [[Cu2(bisterpy)]V4O8[O3P(CH23PO3]2].4H2O (3.4H2O) and [[Cu2(bisterpy)]V2O4(OH)2[O3P(CH2)4PO3]].4H2O (5.4H2O) are two-dimensional. The V(IV) oxide [[Cu2(bisterpy)]V4O4[O3P(CH2)5PO3H]4].7.3H2O (6.7.3H2O) provides a relatively unusual example of a three-dimensional bimetallic oxide phosphonate. The structures reveal a variety of V/P/O substructures as building blocks.

Solid State Coordination Chemistry of Oxomolybdenum Organoarsonate Materials

The oxomolybdenum-arsonate system was investigated under hydrothermal conditions in the presence of charge-compensating copper(II)-organonitrogen complex cations as secondary building blocks. A series of materials of the Mo/O/As/Cu/ligand family has been prepared and structurally characterized. The architectures of the products reflect the identity of the arsonate component and the organonitrogen ligand, as well as the reaction conditions. The structural versatility of this emerging class of compounds is manifested by the one-dimensional structures of [[Cu(o-phen)(H(2)O)(2)](2)Mo(6)O(18)(O(3)AsOH)(2)] (1), [[Cu(terpy)](2)Mo(4)O(13)H(AsO(4))(2)].2H(2)O (2.2H(2)O), [[Cu(2,2'-bpy)(H(2)O)](2)Mo(6)O(18)(O(3)AsC(6)H(5))(2)].2H(2)O (4.2H(2)O), and [[Cu(o-phen)(H(2)O)](2)[Mo(6)O(18)(O(3)AsC(6)H(5))(2)]].4H(2)O (5.4H(2)O), by the two-dimensional materials [[Cu(2)(tpyprz)(H(2)O)(2)]Mo(6)O(18)(O(3)AsOH)(2)].2H(2)O (3.2H(2)O), [[Cu(terpy)](2)Mo(6)O(18)(O(3)AsC(6)H(5))(2)].H(2)O (6.H(2)O), and [[Cu(2)(tpyprz)]Mo(6)O(18)(O(3)AsC(6)H(5))(2)].2H(2)O (7.2H(2)O), and the molecular clusters [[Cu(2,2'-bpy)(2)](2)Mo(12)O(34)(O(3)AsC(6)H(5))(4)].2.35H(2)O (8.2.35H(2)O) and [Cu(o-phen)(H(2)O)(3)][Cu(o-phen)(2)Mo(12)O(34) (O(3)AsC(6)H(5))(4)].3H(2)O (9.3H(2)O).

Novel Mixed-Valence Heteropolyoxometalates: A Molybdenum Diphosphonate Anion [MoV7MoVIO16(O3PPhPO3H)4]3- and Its One- and Two-Dimensional Assemblies

A novel mixed-valence polyoxomolybdenum anion, [Mo(V)(7)Mo(VI)O(16)(O(3)PPhPO(3)H)(4)](3)(-), was synthesized hydrothermally from molybdenum oxide, molybdenum metal, boric and phosphoric acids, 1,2-phenyldiphosphonic acid, and imidazole (ImH) and was structurally characterized as an imidazolium salt (orthorhombic, Aba2; a = 16.674(4), b = 17.238(1), and c = 24.81(2) A). One- and two-dimensional structures of this anion and additional molybdenum diphosphonate linkers were assembled as well. They were structurally characterized as their pyridinium (pyH) salts (pyH)(4)[[Mo(V)(7)Mo(VI)O(16)(O(3)PPhPO(3))(2)(O(3)PPhPO(3)H)(2)][Mo(2)O(4)(OH)(HO(3)PPhPO(3)H)]].5H(2)O (monoclinic, P2(1)/c; a = 20.8506(9), b = 22.866(1), and c = 21.1403(9) A; beta = 118.7087(8) degrees ) and (pyH)(3)[[Mo(V)(7)Mo(VI)O(16)(O(3)PPhPO(3))(4)][Mo(2)O(2)(OH)(2)(HO(3)PPhPO(3)H)]].3H(2)O (orthorhombic, Pca2(1); a = 19.057(1), b = 20.402(2), and c = 20.660(2) A). The compounds were also characterized by IR spectroscopy and magnetic measurements.

Solid State Coordination Chemistry: One-, Two-, and Three-Dimensional Materials Constructed from Molybdophosphonate Subunits Linked through Binuclear Copper Tetra-2-pyridylpyrazine Groups

The hydrothermal reactions of MoO(3), an appropriate Cu(II) source, tetra-2-pyridylpyrazine (tpypyz), and phosphoric acid and/or an organophosphonate yielded a series of organic-inorganic hybrid materials of the copper-molybdophosphonate family. A common feature of the structures is the entrainment within the extended architectures of chemically robust [Mo(5)O(15)(O(3)PR)(2)](4)(-) clusters as molecular building blocks. The cluster is a characteristic feature of the one-dimensional materials [[Cu(2)(tpypyz)(H(2)O)(3)]Mo(5)O(15)(HPO(4))(O(3)PCH(2)CO(2)H)].H(2)O (1.H(2)O) and [[Cu(2)(tpypyz)(H(2)O)]Mo(5)O(15)(O(3)PC(6)H(5))(2)].2H(2)O (2.2H(2)O), the two-dimensional network [[Cu(2)(tpypyz)(H(2)O)(3)]Mo(5)O(15)(HPO(4))(2)].2H(2)O (5.2H(2)O) and the three-dimensional frameworks [[Cu(2)(tpypyz)(H(2)O)(2)]Mo(5)O(15)[O(3)P(CH(2))(n)()PO(3)]].xH(2)O [n = 3, x = 2.25 (6.2.25H(2)O); n = 4, x = 0.33 (7.0.33H(2)O)]. In the case of methylenediphosphonate as the phosphorus component, the unique chelating nature of the ligand precludes formation of the pentamolybdate core, resulting in the chain structures [[Cu(2)(tpypyz)(H(2)O)]Mo(3)O(8) (HO(3)PCH(2)PO(3))(2)].8H(2)O (3.8H(2)O) and [[Cu(2)(tpypyz)(H(2)O)](2)(Mo(3)O(8))(2)(O(3)PCH(2)PO(3))(3)].16.9H(2)O (4.16.9H(2)O). For structures 1-7, the secondary metal-ligand building block is the binuclear [Cu(2)(tpypyz)(H(2)O)(x)](4+) cluster. There is considerable structural versatility as a result of the variability in the number of attachment sites at the phosphomolybdate clusters, the coordination geometry of the Cu(II), which may be four-, five-, or six-coordinate, the extent of aqua ligation, and the participation of phosphate oxygen atoms as well as molybdate oxo groups in bonding to the copper sites. A novel compound with an interpenetrating 2D network structure constructed by [Mo5P2O23] and Ni-4,4'-bipyridine components: its synthesis, characterization and magnetic behaviour

A Novel compound (Hbpy)2[[(H2O)3Ni(bpy)0.5Ni(bpy)(H2O)4]2[Mo5P2O23] [Ni((bpy)0.5)2(H2O)2][Mo5P2O23]].8H2O 1 (bpy = 4,4'-bipyridine) with an interpenetrating 2D network structure was synthesized hydrothermally and characterized by elemental analyses, IR, X-ray single crystal structure analysis and temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibility.

Further evidence for the tetraoxoiodate(V) anion, IO(4)(3-): hydrothermal syntheses and structures of Ba[(MoO(2))(6)(IO(4))(2)O(4)] x H(2)O and Ba(3)[(MoO(2))(2)(IO(6))(2)] x 2H(2)O

The hydrothermal reaction of MoO(3) with BaH(3)IO(6) at 180 degrees C for 3 days results in the formation of Ba[(MoO(2))(6)(IO(4))(2)O(4)] x H(2)O (1). Under similar conditions, the reaction of Ba(OH)(2) x 8H(2)O with MoO(3) and Ba(IO(4))(2) x 6H(2)O yields Ba(3)[(MoO(2))(2)(IO(6))(2)] x 2H(2)O (2). The structure of 1, determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, consists of corner- and edge-sharing distorted MoO(6) octahedra that create two-dimensional slabs. Contained within this molybdenum oxide framework are approximately C(2v) tetraoxoiodate(V) anions, IO(4)(3-), that are involved in bonding with five Mo(VI) centers. The two equatorial oxygen atoms of the IO(4)(3-) anion chelate a single Mo(VI) center, whereas the axial atoms are mu(3)-oxo groups and complete the octahedra of four MoO(6) units. The coordination of the tetraoxoiodate(V) anion to these five highly electropositive centers is probably responsible for stabilizing the substantial anionic charge of this anion. The Ba(2+) cations separate the layers from one another and form long ionic contacts with neighboring oxygen atoms and a water molecule. Compound 2 also contains distorted MoO(6) octahedra. However, these solely edge-share with octahedral hexaoxoiodate(VII), IO(6)(5-), anions to form zigzagging one-dimensional, (1)(infinity)[(MoO(2))(IO(6))](3-), chains that are polar. These chains are separated from one another by Ba(2+) cations that are coordinated by additional water molecules. Bond valence sums for the iodine atoms in 1 and 2 are 5.01 and 7.03, respectively. Organic-inorganic hybrid materials: hydrothermal syntheses and structural characterization of bimetallic organophosphonate oxides of the type Mo/Cu/O/RPO(3)(2-)/organoimine

The hydrothermal reactions of a Cu(II) starting material, a molybdate source, 2,2'-bipyridine or terpyridine, and the appropriate alkyldiphosphonate ligand yield two series of bimetallic organophosphonate hybrid materials of the general types [Cu(n)(bpy)(m)Mo(x)O(y)(H(2)O)(p)[O(3)P(CH(2))(n)PO(3)](z)] and [Cu(n)(terpy)(m)Mo(x)O(y)(H(2)O)(p)[O(3)P(CH(2))(n)PO(3)](z)]. The bipyridyl series includes the one-dimensional materials [Cu(bpy)(MoO(2))(H(2)O)(O(3)PCH(2)PO(3))] (1) and [[Cu(bpy)(2)][Cu(bpy)(H(2)O)](Mo(5)O(15))(O(3)PCH(2)CH(2)CH(2)CH(2)PO(3))].H(2)O (5.H(2)O) and the two-dimensional hybrids [Cu(bpy)(Mo(2)O(5))(H(2)O)(O(3)PCH(2)PO(3))].H(2)O (2.H(2)O), [[Cu(bpy)](2)(Mo(4)O(12))(H(2)O)(2)(O(3)PCH(2)CH(2)PO(3))].2H(2)O (3.2H(2)O), and [Cu(bpy)(Mo(2)O(5))(O(3)PCH(2)CH(2)CH(2)PO(3))](4). The terpyridyl series is represented by the one-dimensional [[Cu(terpy)(H(2)O)](2)(Mo(5)O(15))(O(3)PCH(2)CH(2)PO(3))].3H(2)O (7.3H(2)O) and the two-dimensional composite materials [Cu(terpy)(Mo(2)O(5))(O(3)PCH(2)PO(3))] (6) and [[Cu(terpy)](2)(Mo(5)O(15))(O(3)PCH(2)CH(2)CH(2)PO(3))] (8). The structures exhibit a variety of molybdate building blocks including isolated [MoO(6)] octahedra in 1, binuclear subunits in 2, 4, and 6, tetranuclear embedded clusters in 3, and the prototypical [Mo(5)O(15)(O(3)PR)(2)](4-) cluster type in 5, 7, and 8. These latter materials exemplify the building block approach to the preparation of extended structures.

Structural modulation of molybdenyl iodate architectures by alkali metal cations in AMoO3(IO3) (A = K, Rb, Cs): a facile route to new polar materials with large SHG responses

Three new molybdenyl iodates, KMoO3(IO3) (1), RbMoO3(IO3) (2), and CsMoO3(IO3) (3), have been prepared through the hydrothermal reactions of MoO3 with AIO4 (A = K, Rb, or Cs) at 180 C. These compounds are isolated as nearly colorless, air-stable crystals. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction experiments reveal that 1 possesses a corrugated layered structure constructed from molybdenum oxide chains that are bridged by iodate anions. The puckering of the layers is caused by the alignment of bent molybdenyl (MoO2(2+)) groups along one side of the molybdenum oxide chains. The K+ cations separate these layers from one another and serve to balance charge. In contrast, compounds 2 and 3, which are isostructural, form three-dimensional structures with small cavities filled with Rb+ or Cs+ cations. The differences between the structures of 1 and those of 2 and 3 are due to rotation of the molybdenyl units as translation occurs down the molybdenum oxide chains in order to accommodate the increased size of the Rb+ and Cs+ cations. This rotation allows for the iodate anions to bridge the molybdenum oxide chains in an additional dimension, creating a three-dimensional network structure. Furthermore, while 1 crystallizes in a centrosymmetric space group, 2 and 3 crystallize in polar space groups. Second-harmonic generation measurements on 2 and 3 show large responses of 400x alpha-quartz. Differential scanning calorimetry measurements demonstrate that 2 and 3 are thermally stable to 494 and 486 C, respectively. UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectra of these compounds show a high degree of transparency from 1 to 3 eV and a band gap of 3.1 eV.

Solution structural studies of molybdate-nucleotide polyanions

The complexation of molybdate with the nucleotides adenosine-5'-monophosphate (5'-AMP), adenosine-3'-monophosphate (3'-AMP) and guanosine-5'-monophosphate (5'-GMP) has been investigated by (1)H and (31)P NMR and Mo K-edge X-ray absorption near edge (XANES) and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy. Acidification of aqueous solutions containing molybdate and each of the nucleotides resulted in the formation of a single species characterized by (1)H resonances which are deshielded relative to those of free nucleotide. Analysis of the two-component systems indicated a Mo/nucleotide ratio of 2.5:1 for the complexation species. White compounds, characterized as Na(2)[Mo(5)O(15)(HB)(2)] (B=5'-AMP, 5'-GMP), have been isolated from the acidified molybdate/H(2)B solutions. Dissolution in D(2)O replicates the NMR spectra of the solution species observed prior to precipitation. Solution and solid state Mo K-edge XAS and EXAFS spectroscopy of Na(2)[Mo(5)O(15)(HAMP)(2)] and Na(6)[Mo(5)O(15)(PO(4))(2)] provide convincing evidence for the presence of a pentamolybdodiphosphate core in the molybdate-nucleotide complexes in both the solid and solution states.
