Abstract
Recent advances in catalysis have made the incorporation of fluorine into complex organic molecules easier than ever before, but selective, general and practical fluorination reactions remain sought after. Fluorination of molecules often imparts desirable properties, such as metabolic and thermal stability, and fluorinated molecules are therefore frequently used as pharmaceuticals or materials. But the formation of carbon-fluorine bonds in complex molecules is a significant challenge. Here we discuss reactions to make organofluorides that have emerged within the past few years and which exemplify how to overcome some of the intricate challenges associated with fluorination.

Abstract
Complex [Na(phen)(3)][Cu(NPh(2) )(2)](2), containing a linear bis(N-phenylanilide)copper(I) anion and a distorted octahedral tris(1,10-phenanthroline)sodium counter cation, has been isolated from the catalytic C-N cross-coupling reaction with the CuI/phen/tBuONa (phen=1,10-phenanthroline) catalytic system. Complex 2 can react with 4-iodotoluene to produce 4-methyl-N,N-diphenylaniline (3 a) with 70.6 % yield. In addition, 2 can work as an effective catalyst for C-N coupling under the same reaction conditions, thus indicating that 2 is the intermediate of the catalytic system. Both [Cu(NPh(2))(2)](-) and [Cu(NPh(2))I](-) have been observed by in situ electron ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) under catalytic reaction conditions, thus confirming that they are intermediates in the reaction. A catalytic cycle has been proposed based on these observations. The molecular structure of 2 has been determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis.

Abstract
O- or N-arylated aminophenol products constitute a common structural motif in various potentially useful therapeutic agents and/or drug candidates. We have developed a complementary set of Cu- and Pd-based catalyst systems for the selective O- and N-arylation of unprotected aminophenols using aryl halides. Selective O-arylation of 3- and 4-aminophenols is achieved with copper-catalyzed methods employing picolinic acid or CyDMEDA, trans-N,N'-dimethyl-1,2-cyclohexanediamine, respectively, as the ligand. The selective formation of N-arylated products of 3- and 4-aminophenols can be obtained with BrettPhos precatalyst, a biarylmonophosphine-based palladium catalyst. 2-Aminophenol can be selectively N-arylated with CuI, although no system for the selective O-arylation could be found. Coupling partners with diverse electronic properties and a variety of functional groups can be selectively transformed under these conditions.

Abstract
A highly regio-, diastereo-, and enantioselective allylic alkylation reaction of 3-monosubstituted oxindoles catalyzed by molybdenum is described. The reaction is affected by the electronic and steric variations of the nucleophile. The use of appropriate N-protecting group is particularly important for achieving high regio- and diastereoselectivity. Products from this reaction, containing vicinal quaternary-tertiary stereogenic centers, are valuable synthetic intermediates and should find utility in alkaloid synthesis.

Abstract
The enantioselective alpha-arylation and alpha-vinylation of oxindoles catalyzed by Pd and a biarylmonophosphine ligand with both axial and phosphorus-based chirogenicity is reported. The resultant quaternary carbon stereocenters are formed in high enantiomeric excess, and the conditions tolerate a range of substitution on both the oxindole and the aryl/vinyl coupling partners.

Abstract
Regioselective N-carbamoylation of oxindoles was achieved through the use of imidazole carboxylate reagents. This reaction provides ready access to N-carbamoyl-3-monosubstituted oxindoles.

Abstract
A tandem sequence involving palladium-catalyzed sequential Heck-reduction-cyclization transformations in mild conditions has been developed for the synthesis of oxindoles. The protocol involves inexpensive reagents and does not require any additives such as base or ligands.
