Abstract
We produced, for the first time, monodisperse NiH(x) nanoparticles with particle diameters of 7.0 nm and investigated their magnetic properties. We also produced monodisperse Ni nanoparticles with nearly the same particle diameters as those of NiH(x) nanoparticles as a comparison. The magnetic properties of NiH(x) nanoparticles were quite different from those of Ni nanoparticles. We observed two compositional phases in NiH(x) nanoparticles, similar to bulk material: one is the nearly pure Ni phase with the blocking temperature (T(B)) of 11 K and the other is the hydride phase. We observed T(B) of 40 K in Ni nanoparticles.

Abstract
We describe a new, simple, room-temperature wet-chemical approach for assembling Au and Ag nanoparticles into nanowire networks, without the use of lithographic templates. Five to 35 nm-diameter nanowires passivated with a thin organic layer were synthesized by mechanically agitating a biphasic liquid mixture of an aqueous hydrosol containing the nanoparticles, and toluene. Nanowire structure and surface chemistry are discussed based on electron microscopy, UV-visible spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analyses.

Abstract
The atomic geometry, electronic structure, and magnetic moment of 4d transition-metal clusters with 13 atoms are studied by pseudopotential density-functional calculations. We find a new buckled biplanar structure with a C(2v) symmetry stabilized by enhanced s-d hybridization. It has a lower energy than the close-packed icosahedral or cuboctahedral structure for elements with more than half-filled d shells. The magnetic moments of this buckled biplanar structure are found to be smaller than those of the icosahedral structure and closer to available experimental results.

Abstract
We report clear evidence of the ferromagnetism of gas-evaporated Pd fine particles with a clean surface. The clean Pd particle is found to have a magnetic heterostructure: the surface of the particle is ferromagnetic and the rest is paramagnetic. The size dependence of the magnetic saturation component reveals that the ferromagnetic ordering occurs only on (100) facets of the particle and that the topmost two to five layers from the surface contribute to the ferromagnetism with a magnetic moment of (0.75+/-0.31)micro(B)/atom.

Abstract
The influence of size reduction on the magnetism of CoRh has been studied on a system of isolated nanometric spherical bimetallic ultrafine particles embedded in a polymer matrix. Pulsed fields up to 30 T were used in order to approach the magnetic saturation ( M(S)). Particles with a mean diameter of 1.65 (+/-0.1) nm display a value of 2.38 micro(B) per CoRh unit strongly enhanced compared to values calculated or measured on a bulk alloy. These results were interpreted as the first evidence of the cooperative role of both alloying and size reduction to the enhancement of M(S) in this system associating a 3d FM metal with a 4d metal.

Abstract
A molecular beam of manganese clusters, Mn (n) (n = 11-99), produced at 68 K is deflected toward high field by a gradient field magnet. These results indicate that Mn (n) clusters in this size range are superparamagnetic species whose intrinsic moments can be determined within the framework of the Langevin model of paramagnetism. Local minima in per-atom magnetic moments are observed for Mn (13) and Mn (19), suggestive of an icosahedral growth sequence for the smaller size range. For larger clusters, broad oscillations in the per-atom moments are observed, with a minimum near Mn (32-37) and a maximum around Mn (50-56).
